Greenpeace busts myths on Renewable Energy with The Solar Rooftop Challenge

Greenpeace launched the Solar Rooftop Challenge, and presented at the media and guests held at the Bonifacio High Street last June 15, 2016. On the eve of the start of the comprehensive government energy policy review, and proving that the incoming rainy season is not an impediment to fully embrace solar energy, Solar Rooftop Challenge, an aggressive information campaign highlights the potentials of producing solar energy in the Philippines.

The Solar Rooftop Challenge highlights the benefits of using solar and busts misguided notions that hinder individuals and companies from taking it up by showcasing existing solar rooftop installations of urban middle class households, celebrities, churches, schools, government buildings and private establishments, and through sharing empowering stories of people who have joined the solar rooftop revolution in the country.

Renewable Energy advocates Illac Diaz (from left), Jun Sabayton, Jasmin Curtis-Smith and Saab Magalona grace the launching of the Greenpeace Solar Rooftop Challenge at the Bonifacio High Street on June 15, 2016. The Solar Rooftop Challenge is a massive information campaign that highlights the potentials of producing solar energy in the Philippines and creates a platform for the young and urban Filipinos to join the discussion on renewable energy, particularly the use of solar energy. ©Greenpeace
"Today, we are launching the Solar Rooftop Challenge to create a platform for the young and urban Filipinos to join the discussion on renewable energy, particularly the use of solar energy. At the same time that the young, hip and trendy Filipinos are ‘arriving’, so is the use of solar energy,” explained Reuben Muni, Climate and Energy Campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia Philippines.

The launch event featured informative lectures and discussions by Obet Verzola, author of the book Crossing Over: the Energy Transition to Renewable Energy and Executive Director of Center for Renewable Electricity Strategies (CREST), and Dann Diez, Executive Director of Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities, who presented data and experiences showing that solar energy installation is affordable, accessible and more cost-effective in the long run.

The launch also unveiled the video series JuanaSolar Busts a Myth in Minutes, which features celebrity advocates Saab Magalona, Yam Concepcion and Dingdong Dantes busting the myths surrounding the use of solar energy.

The videos debunk the myths that solar energy is expensive, unreliable, impractical, uneconomic, and beyond the reach of the average Filipino.

The Solar Rooftop Challenge also happens at the same time that the Philippine government is starting its comprehensive review of the country's energy policy in order to reduce dependence on coal and come up with a national framework for a just transition to renewable energy and a low-carbon economic pathway.

“By showing that many Filipinos across the country have already made the switch to solar energy, we are sending a message to the incoming Duterte Administration to take to heart this energy policy review and listen to the clamor of many more Filipinos who want clean and renewable sources of electricity for their homes, offices, and businesses,” added Muni.

By telling empowering stories, the Solar Rooftop Challenge showed that the solar revolution is already happening in many parts of the country - from a solar-powered church, to solar-powered schools, malls, and many households. It aims to serve as a platform for the thousands of Filipinos who have already embraced the solar revolution to show and tell their stories as well as exchange and share ideas and information to persuade other people who are keen on taking up the challenge of producing their own clean and renewable electricity from their rooftops.

“The stories will show energy independence through solar energy. We will break the myths surrounding renewable energy and create a powerful testament on its practicality, cost-effectiveness, and reliability to propel the Philippines to a future powered by clean and sustainable energy,” Muni said.

Globe GCash beep Mastercard, an "everyday all-in-one card" payment solution

G-Xchange, Inc President and CEO Xavier Marzan (left) and MasterCard Country Manager Poch Villa-Real (right) with a giant rendition of the new GCash beep MasterCard during its official media launch held at the Aracama Restaurant, Bonifacio Global City on November 16, 2015.
More than a million Filipinos riding the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) daily can finally enjoy the combined convenience of paying for their MRT and LRT fares plus engaging in cashless shopping and bills payments with the new GCash beep Mastercard.

Filipinos without credit cards can now pay for their online transactions both here and overseas, as well as pay for MRT/LRT rides with a new product from Globe.

GCash beep Mastercard is the first value-added card to be beep ready, expected to serve as an “everyday-all-in-one” card which functions as an ATM card for cash withdrawals, a prepaid card for purchases, and a beep card for daily MRT/LRT commute.

"Here in the Philippines, three out of four adults do not have bank accounts. And even within the banked population, there are hugely underserved segments with only 3% credit card penetration. We at GCash are enabling this market with financial services such as GCash beep MasterCard to give them all the convenience of cashless shopping and payment, among other benefits,” said Xavier Marzan, President and CEO of G-Xchange Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Globe Telecom, which operates GCash.

“We are very pleased with our collaboration with GXI on the launch of the new GCash beep MasterCard. As a valued MasterCard member, all GCash beep MasterCard users will now have access to over 40 million MasterCard merchant locations and ATMs worldwide. This card certainly provides a powerful tool to consumers in the Philippines, enhancing their daily lives given their expanding purchasing needs locally, overseas and in the digital space,” said Poch Villa-Real, MasterCard country head.

GCash beep MasterCard is the first value-added card to be beep ready. Since the start of September 2015, GCash started selling GCash beep MasterCard in parallel with the expansion of the tap payment facilities in various MRT/LRT stations. beep is the authorized reloadable electronic payment under the unified LRT/MRT ticket system which started full implementation on October this year. It is operated by AF Payments Incorporated primarily owned by Ayala Corporation and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.

"Making the lives of Filipinos a lot easier and better through technology is always a priority. Thus, we made sure that the beep functionality is part of the GCash Mastercard. With it, commuters don't need to line up every time they ride the MRT or LRT which takes a long time, because with the GCash beep Mastercard they can purchase their fare like a stored value card," added Marzan

The tap, swipe and shop feature also makes it easy for customers to just tap the card to pay for their fares, swipe their card for purchases and even shop online for apps and online goods. The GCash beep Mastercard is definitely the commuter's everyday all-in-one card.

Globe GCash beep Mastercard is not only a reloadable contactless tap and go card for LRT/MRT passengers but is also accepted as a payment option in popular online shopping sites and in almost 33 million establishments worldwide which recognize the Mastercard brand.

At the same time, because it has a GCash account, it can be used to buy prepaid Globe/TM phone load, send money to any Globe/TM user for free, receive remittance, and even withdraw cash from any automated teller machine (ATM). Much more, GCash beep Mastercard allows balance and transaction monitoring to ensure that everything is properly recorded.

The GCash beep MasterCard are available at 35 selected Globe Stores nationwide and roving caravans for oly P150. It includes a free prepaid Globe SIM card and P30 in GCash load. The personalized GCash beep Mastercard can be ready in just a few minutes once a valid ID is presented.

Funds for the card may be loaded by cashing in at any of the 10,000 GCash outlets nationwide. These outlets include all Globe Stores, 7-11 convenience stores, SM Department Stores, Puregold Supermarkets and pawnshops such as Tambunting and Villarica, among others.

In addition, GCash subscribers can also use mobile and online banking to fund their Gcash beep MasterCard.

To reload the beep account, customers just need to place the GCash beep Mastercard on top of the Stored Value Card reader of the Ticket Vending Machine at any LRT/MRT station, choose the Stored Value option on the screen, insert the corresponding amount of money on the slot provided, and wait for the transaction receipt to come out.

GCash beep Mastercard may be purchased at various caravans (see www.globe.com.ph/gcash for details) for only P150 and may retain a maximum beep stored value of P10,000 valid for 5 years. The GCash wallet, meanwhile, may accommodate as much as P100,000.

Since GCash beep MasterCard is powered by GCash, cardholders can also enjoy other features and benefits. As a cardholder with a GCash account, customers may easily buy discounted prepaid Globe/TM phone load, send money to any Globe/TM user for free, receive remittances, pay bills and even withdraw cash from any automated teller machine (ATM) worldwide.

Furthermore, with GCash, customers can also check their GCash balance anytime and monitor all their transactions.

They have become very particular about quality, and will even drink multiple cups a day so long as that quality is met.”
This, Albaña adds, is where Dipdenza Coffee comes in—by offering Filipinos premium blends and well-matched food items at relatively affordable prices.

Angeli Albaña

“We bring together the best of second-wave—established coffee blends that you’ll find in popular coffee shops—and third-wave coffee, which features more specialized mixes.”
At the Dipdenza Coffee, the ambience is quiet, you’ll immediately feel at ease in its warm, earthy interiors.

Experience the soothing aroma and delectable taste of their premium coffee selection, with the wonderful smell of freshly-ground beans inviting you to take your pick of coffee for your stay.

Their bestseller, the Caramel Cappuccino, is a delightfully suave concoction of sweet, strong, and bitter, while classic blends such as your basic Brewed Coffee, Café Americano, Café Mocha, and Late Macchiato, spell great ways to give you an energy boost at the start or middle of the day, or a much-needed nightcap after work.

The Flavored Lattes are also fun ways to customize your coffee experience—choose from hazelnut, caramel, butter pecan, irish cream, French vanilla, peanut butter, pumpkin spice, green apple, kiwi, peach, blueberry, raspberry, lemon, strawberry, passion fruit, and lychee.

While these are your traditional coffee bets, Dipdenza steps up the coffee game a notch higher than the usual with a slightly stronger roast, challenging you to really savor the beans’ unique flavors and notes. For those who prefer to take their caffeine in one big and bold jolt, they can opt to go Espresso—whether as a pure shot, con panna (with cream), or as a macchiato (with some milk).

Now this is one shop that knows and chooses its coffee well, as Dipdenza Coffee uses a wide variety of beans to allow coffee drinkers to explore and broaden their palette.

There’s the creamy Brazil Fazenda Dutra, with notes of caramel sweetness and hints of milk chocolate, punctuated by a taste of vanilla at the end; the “Bourbon”-like Guatemala Fancy Antigua Santo Domingo, which features fascinating hints of lemon and lemon peel; the tea-like Ethiopian Sidamo, with herbal aromatics and the flavors of jackfruit and lemon juice; and the delightful Kenya Aa Asali, with its enticing cocoa and blackcurrant fragrance, strong cocoa flavors, subtle winey and fruity characters, and vanilla and caramel finish, among many other varieties.

As you watch the baristas create the perfect cup, you’ll immediately notice this coffee jaunt’s particular penchant for quality.

“You’ll always get freshly-ground coffee using beans that are roasted locally, Albaña stresses. We use 3 different kinds of blends that are of Grade 1 quality, which means that these are the best of the best coffee farmed all around the world. All our baristas underwent specialty training and are experts in what they do. They’ll be able to give you recommendations based on your taste.”

Now, those who are looking for non-coffee-based beverages needn’t look elsewhere either, as Dipdenza offers more than just its signature brews.

The indulgent Premium Peanut Butter Frappuccino is a bestseller guaranteed to make the sweet-toothed starry-eyed, while tea drinkers will love the creamy but bold Green Matcha. Other frappe flavors to try—and to put in your bucket list!—include Cookies ‘n Cream, Mocha Raspberry, and Chai Latte.

And of course, the best way to experience these drinks is by pairing them with great food, and Dipdenza doesn’t cease to impress with their repertoire of mouthwatering must-tries.

Dig into Dipdenza’s take on a classic pasta dish with its Spanish Sardines Aglio Olio, a simple yet tasty recipe bursting with the fresh flavors of Spanish sardines, garlic, capers, basil, and mushroom, punctuated by the smooth and clean finish of extra virgin olive oil.

Sumptuous and filling sandwiches also abound—don’t miss out on their bestselling Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich, a heavenly mash-up of thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, green peppers, and jalapeño encased in a warm baguette. Other winning options include the Beef and Cheese Wraps, Smoked Turkey Sandwich, and the Ciabatta Tuna Sandwich.

Of course, desserts!

Dipdenza keeps it fresh and exciting by rotating its dessert menu each week with different sweet and savory meal enders to keep you on the lookout for something new to enjoy with your drink. But here’s an insider tip: one of their bestsellers is the signature Choco Lava Cake, a dangerously delicious eruption of gooey melted chocolate hidden within warm and moist chocolate cake. Needless to say, it combines excellently with your preferred cup of coffee.

Best of all, the promise of affordability is consistent in this coffee shop’s menu. Drinks (coffee or otherwise) range from Php100-Php170; and the food won’t break your budget either, costing around Php150-Php235, with some desserts even being offered for as low as Php55 per order—making it a friendly place for students, working professionals, families, and friends to come in and hang out.

For a city that’s ready to take coffee drinking to the next level, Metro Manila has certainly found its answer in Dipdenza. A new treasure in this busy and congested metro, this coffee shop has the makings of becoming the favorite go-to spot of anyone wanting to enjoy a really good cup of high-quality coffee—and go back and have more of it.
