Boracay Water ready to accept and treat sewer connections per latest DENR MO

Boracay Island Water Company (Boracay Water) announced its readiness to accept sewer connections, following the latest Memorandum Order released by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which directed hotels, resort, and similar establishments to connect to island’s concessionaires, in preparation for the Island’s scheduled re-opening in October.

Dated September 18 and signed by Secretary Roy Cimatu, the Memorandum Order provided the guidelines on the installation or construction of individual Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) per establishment in Boracay and at the same time ordered the concessionaires to collect and treat the wastewater of their own respective clients.

It also ordered Concessionaires to issue certifications that their respective customers are either connected to the sewer line or have their own compliant individuals STPs. The said certification will serve as a requirement for the hotel or establishment to operate come opening date on the 26th of October 2018.

As part of this directive, the Concessionaires are asked to provide DENR with data on water billed volume and volume of wastewater received for treatment for monitoring and planning purposes.

The Memorandum also requested all hotels having their own individuals STPs to discharge their treated effluents through the sewer lines and treated water lines of their water providers for eventual proper disposal. In relation to this, Boracay Water has a total 21 kilometers of sewer network available on the island, and have two sewage treatment facilities that can treat up to 11.5 million liters of wastewater or used water from establishments prior to disposal.

The latest DENR Order strictly stated that hotels that are unable to comply will not be allowed to open and operate their business until they have established their own compliant STPs.

It can be recalled that Boracay Water started its aggressive campaign to encourage connection to the company’s sewer network in March of this year. To date, about 120 establishments and residences have signified their intention to be connected to the company’s sewer system.

With the recent directive of DENR, the company is expecting to receive more applications for sewer connection even from non-Boracay Water customers. This will allow more commercial and residential establishments to discharge their used water into a reliable sewer system and ensure that it will be properly processed to comply with existing effluent standards of DENR.

Currently, more than 1,200 establishments and residences are directly connected to Boracay Water’s sewer network. For unsewered areas or areas with no existing sewer network, regular desludging or siphoning services are being done through the company’s desludging trucks which collect wastewater for treatment in the two sewage treatment plants of the Boracay Water located in barangays Manocmanoc and Balabag.

Globe to spearhead long-term sustainability program for Boracay Cancels LaBoracay participation

Globe Telecom is set to spearhead a long-term sustainability program to help improve Boracay’s environmental conditions in support of the government’s overall rehabilitation strategy for the island.

myrns.roman

With the government’s decision to close the country’s favorite tourist destination for six months beginning April 26, Globe is now focusing on its sustainability efforts instead of participating in LaBoracay, an annual festivity held during the Labor Day weekend.

“We continue our commitment to the sustainability principle of care for environment. Globe is one with the government in its commitment for environmental protection and preservation of prime tourism destinations, such as Boracay, for a more sustainable economic growth and development,” said Yoly Crisanto, Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Globe is looking at how it can contribute to sustainable tourism awareness and marine life conservation in coordination with various stakeholders such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the local government units, and non-government organizations.

“Though our LaBoracay participation is a long-awaited summer event, we understand the need for sensitivity to the island’s biodiversity problems. In lieu of the usual parties and celebrations, we are moving towards a more purposeful program aimed to improve Boracay’s environmental situation,” added Issa Cabreira, Senior Vice President for Consumer Mobile Marketing.

Since 2012, Globe has been contributing to various environmental initiatives and programs including marine life protection, offshore clean-up training, and raising environmental awareness among the youth and local residents. Last year, the company spearheaded volunteer beach clean-up, coral planting, and reef rehabilitation activities during the LaBoracay celebration.

Boracay to be closed for 6 months for rehabilitation

Philippine resort island Boracay to be closed for 6 months for rehabilitation. President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the recommendation of three government agencies to close Boracay down completely for six months beginning April 26 to start its rehabilitation..

"Boracay [is] closed for six months effective 26 April," Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said. Harry Roque shared that Duterte made the order during a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace late on Wednesday. The recommendation was made by the task force composed of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). The temporary closure is seen by the National Government as a short-term solution to address the environmental woes hounding Boracay.

Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed Roque's statement, saying that Duterte has indeed approved the "total closure" of the country's most famous tourist destination.

Guevarra said a calamity fund will be activated to help those who will affected by the shutdown, including the residents and the thousands of resort workers who will be displaced.

The island, which has a total land area of 1,064 hectares, has more than 56,000 population, according to government figures.

Duterte has earlier said that he supports the recommendation of three government departments to shut down Boracay for six months to give way to the massive clean-up on the island.

Duterte, who likened the island to a "cesspool," has ordered a crackdown on the island after learning that many of the establishments there have no proper sewerage system and emptying their waste directly into the sea.

Since Duterte gave the order, the government started dismantling illegal structures erected in forest lands and on the beach.

The popular resort island's powdery white sand and calm blue waters attract 2 million visitors yearly.

PSC’s grand opening celebration of its first Boracay store was held on May 29, 2015. PSC will end the year with three stores in Boracay and Aklanons can expect a total of 11 stores to open in the span of 3 years.

With all the establishments that have opened in Boracay, people may wonder, where’s our favorite convenience store? After all, Boracay is a destination that never sleeps, making it the perfect candidate for a 7-Eleven.

“We’re excited to be in Boracay, it is a very promising market that is still growing. We are happy that 7-Eleven is the first international convenience store to open in one of the top tourist destinations in the country,” said Jose Victor Paterno, PSC President and CEO.

Locals and tourists will now be able to enjoy the unique offerings that made the store loved by its patrons. Customers can expect to get a taste of the iconic frozen drink, Slurpee, especially in the midst of the summer heat.

“We are delighted to re-launch our Boracay flights, with premium travel services to be enjoyed exclusively by SEAIR passengers. This is just a first step towards SEAIR’s goal to provide luxurious, comfortable and value for money travel to Boracay” said SEAIR’s Mr. Patrick Tan.

SEAIR uses the Dornier 328 aircraft on its Manila- Caticlan flights. It is the fastest, most advanced jet-prop, and the latest in a long line of technologically-innovative aircraft manufactured by Germany-based Dornier. The aircraft enables SEAIR to offer the fastest flights from Manila to Caticlan at just 35 minutes. It has a large seat pitch with a feel of a big jet and is designed with more interior volume per passenger than the 100+ seater Boeing 737. Dornier 328s are capable to perform Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) and is ideal for the small runway of Caticlan.

Refresh Boracay! Tropicana Coco Quench kicks off summer in Boracay

Mark this day! March 30 marks the Green Saturday event, with Yoga wellness morning!

And Green is definitely the color of summer, as Tropicana Coco Quench, the first locally produced coconut water in a Tetra Pak packaging, ushers in the summer season at TripAdvisor’s 2013 Best Asian Beach, Boracay.
Right at the glistening white and powdery shores of the island, Tropicana Coco Quench will be holding several activities that will take off on March 27 through the 31st. Selling and redemption booths are scattered along the three stations, and with a strong push for recycling products, Tropicana Coco Quench will give out essential summer items in exchange for empty Tetra Pak packages.

Green Saturday event, will start with Yoga wellness morning with renowned instructor, Louise Lee. There will be a sunset happy hour with overflowing coconut water, and a chill out party to cap off the night, all happening at the beachfront of Obama Grill.

Just as nature intended, Tropicana Coco Quench is a convenient way to enjoy coconut water, with no added flavors, low in sugar, and fewer calories, as compared to other drinks.

Its Tetra Pak packaging locks in the freshness and benefits found in a real coconut fruit, and improves the shelf life for up to 8 months.
