Globe spearheads the digital transformation of Manila

Globe signs MOA with Mayor Isko Moreno to deploy  GoWIFI and to empower scholars with GCash.

Globe  spearheads the digital transformation of the country’s capital by providing fast and reliable internet connectivity in key areas with GoWiFi and delivering financial technology services to the city’s scholars with GCash.

The use of GCash as the official financial services platform to send allowances and other monetary benefits to about 15,000 scholars under the Office of the Manila City Mayor. Students will receive a corresponding GCash Mastercard to withdraw their cash allowance, and will also serve as their official identification card as a bonafide scholarship beneficiary of the city.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno today signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to make GoWiFi available at Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat. Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo National High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

“Providing free WiFi services via GoWiFi and bringing financial inclusivity via GCash are just the initial undertakings from our end to contribute to the digitalization efforts of the city. Our goal is to provide the entire digital ecosystem of Globe for Manileños to enjoy their digital lifestyle,” he revealed as he stressed that the collaboration with the City of Manila is a first step in contributing to the city’s digital transformation initiatives.

Cu also signified intention to improve the Globe network in the city to enable its digitalization. ”We need to build additional 100 wireless sites to improve the signal in Manila,” Cu said.

Globe also has several ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives as part of its sustainability program directly benefited Manileños, such as the Globe Plastic Xchange program held in Brgy. 455 last September 14 where single use plastics were collected in exchange for rewards points, turnover of information and communication technologies equipment and a computer lab to Manila Science High School, roll-out of Globe‘s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to Manila Science High School students in 2016 to teach them responsible use of the internet and which will be adopted in the curriculum of the Department of Education for all public schools including those in Manila City, and Globe’s participation in the Manila Bay coastal clean-up with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources this September 21.

GoWiFi continues its expansion plans nationwide, particularly in high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals, and schools to make high-quality internet connection accessible and affordable to more Filipinos. As of the first half of the year, GoWiFi is accessible in 2,500 sites nationwide, up by 500 sites from the previous year.

To date, GCash has made financial transactions easier for its 20 million registered users. And with over 70,000 partner merchants in the country, it truly has helped revolutionize the way Filipinos transact.

Globe Telecom’s Ernest Cu is “CEO of the Year” finalist in World Communications Awards 2017

Ernest Cu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Globe Telecom, has been named a finalist in the "CEO of the Year" category at the World Communications Awards 2017 (WCA), the largest awards ceremony in global telecoms organized by Total Telecom.

Established in 1999, the WCA recognize excellence among global telecom leaders -- being synonymous with innovation, merit and outstanding performance in the telecoms field.

Cu was shortlisted in the “CEO of the Year” category in recognition of his efforts to make Globe competitive both globally and locally. His leadership redefined the telco landscape in the Philippines and helped set the trends in the industry.

“I am grateful to WCA for this nomination. It brings honor to my country and company to be recognized among the top players in this vastly competitive industry. In Globe, we constantly challenge ourselves to bring out the best for our customers and to become relevant to the Filipino digital consumer by introducing game-changing and leading edge products and services,” he said.

Cu has been named best CEO several times by various industry award giving bodies since he assumed the position in 2008. He is credited for understanding the consumer and adapting a challenger mindset, which makes it easy for the team to come up with products and services that are first-to-market game-changing offers. Beyond that, he engineered the network modernization that propelled the telecom firm to be the Philippine leader in mobile today.

His vision and anticipation of what the market would look like allowed the company to grow beyond telecom services and venture into diverse entertainment services through partnerships with international brands such as Disney, Spotify, Sports Illustrated, Hooq, among others.

More recently, Cu spearheaded faster and more accessible home broadband services when Globe fast-tracked the deployment of its 700-MHz spectrum. The company's goal is to connect 2 million households nationwide by 2020.

“The bar has been raised for CEO of the Year this year, as we have moved assessment of the finalists by our main panel of judges. Ernest Cu has done exceptionally well to make the final 5 from the many nominations we received,” said Rob Chambers, CEO of Total Telecom.

With 21 categories, entries to WCA were reviewed by an expert panel of judges. The finalists highlight operators, partners and solution providers who have excelled over the last year. Cu is up against Ahmad Hanandeh of Zain Jordan, Alan Masarek of Vonage, and Rick Calder of GTT Communications.

The winner will be decided by a vote open to telecom industry professionals from across the globe. Winners of the 2017 WCA will be announced at the gala dinner to be held on November 28 at Supernova, London.
