Nald: A kid with big ambitions

Nald in action. CAVRAA football team member Ronald Dapena kicks his way through opponents during a game between CAVRAA and Region XII in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Albay.

A small town kid with big ambitions, this is what best describes 17-year old Ronaldo “Nald” Dapena who is one of the members of the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA) football team. He came from San Antonio, Delfin Albano, Isabela, which is considered as one of the poorest barrios in the area. The third of five siblings, Nald’s father works as a farmer while his mother works part-time at a local bakery.

“Medyo mahirap din po ang buhay namin pero kahit paano po nakakaraos naman po kami sa pang araw-araw at kung may pagkakataon, tumutulong din po ako sa aking ama sa bukid,” says Nald.

Aware of their difficulties in life, Nald often finds solace in playing the sport he fell in love with at a young age, “Ten years old pa lang, naglalaro na ako ng football at madalas akong sumali sa Intramurals sa school. Nakapaglaro na din po ako sa mga Provincial Meets. Doon po ako nadiskubre ng coach po namin ngayon na si Mr. Alexander Tabubuca," says Nald.

With continuous mentoring and guidance, Nald’s game continued to improve and develop along with his team mates. With dedication and team work, they became the champions in CAVRAA Meet where they won P15,000 and were qualified for this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Not resting on his laurels, Nald used his P1,000 share of the cash gift to apply for an NC II for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) at the Technical Skills and Development Authority (TESDA). Asked if he was hesitant to let go of his prized money given their financial situation, “Alam kong para sa gaya namin, malaking pera na ang P1,000, pero wala naman akong panghihinayang sa ginawa ko dahil magagamit ko din iyon para sa aking kinabukasan," he said. By investing his money wisely, he is now a proud holder of an NC II certificate.
Ronaldo “Nald” Dapena

Everything seems to be going well for Nald until a little bump on the road temporarily stopped him in his track. In preparation for the 2016 Palarong Pambansa, all the delegates were required to train in Tuguegarao City, a place far and unfamiliar for Nald and his parents. All his life, he has only competed in his home province. Playing on a much farther venue meant additional expenses for Nald and his family, although the fare is only P50. Just when Nald was about to throw in the towel, coach Tabucaca came to the rescue.

“Pumunta si coach sa bahay namin at sinabi sa mga magulang ko na siya na ang bahala sa pamasahe ko at titingin sa akin habang nasa malayo ako para hindi na sila mag-alala,” Nald recalls smiling.

Believing in Nald’s potential as a good football player, there was no way Coach Tabubuca would let that go to waste.

Teaming the Art of Football with Exquisite Phones: FC Barcelona & OPPO Announce Partnership

Local fans of smartphone brand OPPO and Spanish football team FC Barcelona, two winning global brands that have become more and more popular in the Philippines, have twice the more reason to cheer nowadays after the recent teaming up of the art of football and exquisite phones.

After a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final on May 30 (Spanish local time), FC Barcelona announced their partnership with smartphone brand OPPO.

Thus, starting from the new football season this year, OPPO will be collaborating with FC Barcelona as their official partner for the mobile phone category.

The players of the first team gave a warm welcome to OPPO

FC Barcelona Chief Executive Officer Ignacio Mestre expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating: “OPPO is a global leading smartphone brand known for its exquisite product design and state-of-the-art camera technologies. We are more than happy to welcome OPPO to our family and hope this partnership can bring us closer to our supporters all over the world.”

According to Tony Chen, CEO of OPPO, the company chose FC Barcelona not only because of their status as an iconic world class football club but also because they represent the art of football. He described the partnership with FC Barcelona as an important step in OPPO’s global marketing strategy.

Teaming with OPPO was both unexpected, yet balanced for FC Barcelona, who always follows strict criteria when selecting partners. FC Barcelona is known for playing football as a fine art, supported by superb skills and excellent teamwork of their players and making every match a feast for the eyes.

Such competitive artistry is very much in line with OPPO’s pursuit of perfection and artistry of their products by combining inspired design and sophisticated manufacturing.

Another point which unites FC Barcelona and OPPO is their shared ability to lead trends. From the Dream Team in the Cruyff era to the four-time Champions League winners, FC Barcelona have always been at the forefront of football.

FC Barcelona just won the Copa del Rey for the 27th time

In the case of OPPO, over the ten years since their inception, they have introduced a stunning range of awesome products, from eye-opening MP3 devices to world-renowned Blu-ray players.

Creating the then world’s thinnest phone ‘Finder’, the globe’s first motorized rotating camera phone the ‘N3’ and the planet’s fastest rapid-charging technology VOOC, OPPO has never failed to impress and delight.

The two partners – each with an army of fans around the world including in the Philippines – also have much in common in repaying their audience in a similar fan culture.

Though details of the partnership have not been disclosed, it is certain that they will cooperate in extensive fields including football events, fan activities, TV advertising, and accessories.

FC Barcelona fans will be able to see OPPO’s presence in the club’s matches from the new season this year. In a couple of days, FC Barcelona who have won two consecutive championship titles to their name, will kick off the last push towards the Champions League final, whetting the keen anticipation of fans worldwide.

FC Barcelona was founded on November 29, 1899 by initiative of a Swiss gentleman called Hans Maximilian Gamper, popularly known as Joan Gamper. Since it was founded, the club has had 44 different presidents. Phil and James Younghusband invade entertainment world, show funny side of sports via TV5's YH Tube

http://instagram.com/p/zMjPyxsJcJ/

Football Ambassadors brothers Phil and James Younghusband now take a break from the serious sports stuff as they invade entertainment world. They will share some good laughs, pranks and Tagalog nose-bleed on their show 'YH Tube' on TV5, will be aired at 4:30 p.m. every Saturday starting Feb. 21.

“We wanted to show a different side of Phil and James. Everyone knows them to be two of the best football players to wear a Philippine jersey. They’re talented athletes and dedicated to the game of football. But this time, they get to show their funny side. The two are gifted with great personalities and they love a good laugh every now and then, just like everybody else. All these will come out in YH Tube,” said Sports5 manager Vitto Lazatin.

Phil and James Younghusband of the Azkals, will be hosting the YH Tube, a show featuring sports bloopers from all over the world, mostly from the Philippines.

For the famous sports siblings, the show is indeed a welcome break from their routine activities. For the past three years, the brothers have been teaching football basics on AksyonTV, in the segment FYI: Football Younghusband Instructional. Filipinos also known them as serious and dedicated athletes on the football field, as part of the Loyola Meralco Sparks and the men's national fotball team.

During the press conference, the brothers gave us a sneak preview of what to expect from their new show, and present us something we will really watch out, their tongue twister in Tagalog!

According to Phil, “James is only 11 months older than me. Para kaming kambal!” We see them as James spoke openly of his lovelife, having a non-show biz girlfriend for four years now, and Phil has become a master at evading such issues. As I was surprised, Phil was linked to the actress “Bangs” after his breakup with Angel Locsin! But Phil said though that "whatever there was between me and Bangs is now over and we’re just friends."

The brothers are getting relax and having fun with the media people - James was so cool, but when they took time out after the question and answer portion,  Phil Younghusband’s shirt was so drenched with sweat, it looked like he had just played a whole game of football.

We requested them especially Phil, to answer in Tagalog, and thanks there was no nosebleed speaking all that Tagalog during the press conference of “YH Tube.”

"Pag may time, acting acting pag may time," Phil said.

YH Tube is a production of Sports5. Watch and join Phil and James every Saturday at 4:30 pm beginning February 21 as they bring us sports' comedy of errors on YH Tube only on TV5.

Football: An Instrument of Transformation

For Fundacion MAPFRE, football isn’t simply a game; But it is an instrument of transformation for the street kids and marginalized sector in this province.

Kids throwing the balls in the air and are excited to use them in their training

Javier Warleta, president and CEO of MAPFRE Insular Insurance Corporation, said football is just an instrument to attract out of school youth and some street kids to go back to school through the Social Sports School.

“Football is just a hook. Football is just something that attracts the community to enroll in the program that will help them,” said Javier Warleta, president of MAPFRE Insular Insurance Corporation, who came to deliver at least 41 footballs sent by Fundacion Real Madrid.

But there are a lot of programs, which are the most important, under the project that helps the youth and their families, Warleta added.

With the support from Fundacion MAPFRE and in collaboration of football giant Fundacion Real Madrid, Ang Nagkahiusang Kabatan-onan Alang sa Kalamboan (ANAKK) Sta.Cruz, is running the Social Sports School, which provides alternative learning systems, formal education and livelihood skills.

Aside from the out of school youth, the Social Sports School also caters its services to the poor and marginalized sectors in towns of Hagonoy, Padada and Digos City, said ANAKK’s executive director Pablo Tanuan.

Tanuan said they also provide assistance to those who are taking formal education in elementary and high school levels.
The kids showcasing their soccer skills using the donated footballs.

Among those who benefited the non-formal schooling are Bonifacio Fuentes and Junrey Midagat, both used to be part of a dreaded gang in Digos City.
Together, they used to go out along with dozens of other teenagers lurking in the dark streets of city. A street gang called “Gods Against War” bonded them together and they often get involved in gang wars.

Fuentes and Midagat are among the 300 kids and youth who are part of the Social Sports Program that started three years ago.

“The influence of our barkada led us to join the gang. It’s so hard to avoid trouble or riots because the other side, sometimes, are the ones looking for trouble,” admitted Fuentes who is now 20 years old.

Tanuan said that Fuentes and his squad started showing their interest sometime in 2007 by playing football with some of the teens who are under the program.

The gang members were coming to Sta. Cruz for tune-up games, he said.

“But since they were still active in their gang, their presence in the pitch and in our gathering was on and off as well. Nobody handled them as a team,” Tanuan recounted.

But late last year, he said, they were formally absorbed in the program and the former gang members are taking up non-formal education in under the Alternative Learning School (ALS) of the Department of Education.

“The kids here don’t just play football, they should either attend formal or non-formal schooling. These two incorporated together,” he pointed out.

By playing football, Tanuan added, the kids are diverting their ‘energies’ into the game.

As a game, football is also educational because we also incorporate values formation, he said, adding that coaches also teach them hygiene, health and other literacy components during rests.

“To be an athlete just secondary. But the primary aim is to be a responsible citizen through our holistic programs. This is the reason why we gave more focus on former gang members, ” Tanuan explained.

Tanuan said a Spanish friend of his introduced him to Fundacion Real Madrid, the Spanish-based foundation of the well-acclaimed football team, Real Madrid, which provides the soccer training program for the local coaches and student beneficiaries of the program. With support and funding provided by Fundacion MAPFRE, a Spanish non-profit institution that contributes to society wolrd-wide, Anakk started to expand in Digos City, Hagonoy and Padada in Davao del Sur by last year.

“The are some volunteers who are helping us run our school. We have several football coaches whom we only pay on a per session basis since we cannot afford to pay them regularly,” Tanuan said.

“In the past, we were on the streets. Now we are on the pitches teaching the children the game as well as sharing our lessons in the past,” Fuentes said.

For Midagat, to be part of the Social Sports School gave him an opportunity to correct his wrongdoings in the past.

“I realized that I feel safe and secure after leaving the gang,” he said.

Tanuan said they were able to convince some of the rival gangs to be part of the Social Sports School. “As of now, we already have at least 40 former gang members who are now playing football and studying under ALS.”

He added it was very challenging to convince the gang members to give more focus on the program, especially in the urban area.

Recently, a livelihood program was also launched for the out of school youth in Digos.

“If we don’t give more attention to these gang members, they will still go back to the streets. Some were not able to continue the program. But at least, we gave them an opportunity to transform,” Tanuan concluded.

FUNDACION MAPFRE is a non-profit institution created by MAPFRE in 1975, for the purpose of contributing to the welfare of citizens and society in Spain and in over 29 countries throughout the world. Fundacion Real Madrid is the instrument by which Real Madrid is present in society and develops its social and cultural awareness programmes.

Six-shooter Phil Younghusband takes top scorer title

Phil Younghusband’s double in the Philippines’ epic 4-3 win over Palestine in Monday’s third-place play-off saw the prolific Azkals’ striker emerge as the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup’s Top Scorer.

The 24-year-old confidently swept a 24th minute penalty passed Palestine keeper Ramzi Saleh for his tournament-topping sixth goal having netted number five just four minutes into the match with the West Asians.

Younghusband had gone into final day of an engrossing AFC Challenge Cup leading the race for the top scorer award having scored both goals in the Philippines' 2-0 win over 2008 champions India and the openers in both the 2-1 victory over inaugural winners Tajikistan and the semi-final defeat toTurkmenistan.

"Obviously, the attack has been getting the praise because we have been scoring but it's been a total team effort in this tournament," Younghusband said prior to the match with Palestine.

"My expectations are always to score more but the most important thing is the team wins."

"It's good because I have a connection with my brother James and Angel (Guirado) and this has helped me a lot while playing with Paul (Mulders) has also given me a lot of confidence," revealed the former Chelsea reserve forward, who has now netted 24 times since getting his first goal for the Azkals in 2007 AFF Suzuki Cup qualifier against Timor Leste.

“The timing is great. The Philippine Azkals are keeping football’s popularity up since they beat Vietnam 2-0, last year in the Suzuki Cup. Beckham’s visit would further popularize football among Filipinos,” Araneta said.
