Globe Group, local partners turn Lolo, Lola into #SeniorDigizens in digital inclusion push

Leading digital solutions platform Globe Group is set to transform the digital landscape for Filipino seniors with its innovative "Teach Me How To Digi" #SeniorDigizen Learning Session, set on January 25 at the Skydome, SM North Edsa.

Gathering at least 220 senior citizens in half a day of enriching tech learning, the #SeniorDigizens event is backed by some of the biggest brands in tech and retail, and by senior citizen advocates from the government.

“It’s really very important that our senior citizens learn digital skills because in the future, a lot of services will truly become fully digital. We have to help the seniors overcome their fear. And I guarantee you that once you try it, it’s going to be as easy or much easier than the old manual way,” said Ernest Cu, Globe Group President and CEO.

“As digitalization accelerates, tech adoption should be simple and easy for everyone, no matter the age. Technology should not be intimidating or difficult for our seniors, and they should be able to enjoy its benefits. The goal of our #SeniorDigizens campaign is to equip them with knowledge that will help them adopt new tech and apps that address their day to day pain points,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer of the Globe Group.

The event features learning sessions on digital skills: How to create a Gmail account to be facilitated by Google, a 101 course on using smartphones via Globe, and sessions on using fintech platform GCash and telehealth service KonsultaMD.

Apart from hosting the event at Sky Dome, retail giant, SM, is providing an opportunity for senior citizens to join the Super Grannies Club (SGC), the grandest Facebook community for seasoned individuals. As SGC members, participants gain early access to events, exclusive mall deals and updates on SM Cares programs. These include health and wellness activities like Walk for Life, the award-winning Emergency Preparedness Forum and community service programs that enable a fun, active and productive lifestyle for lolos and lolas.

SM’s loyalty program SMAC, meanwhile, sponsored the event in SM Malls, as it is one with Globe in giving importance and joy to senior citizens.

“We are happy to support Globe in bringing to fruition our shared vision of digitalizing seniors. SM has long given seniors priority in our initiatives, and so our partnership with Globe for the #SeniorDigizens campaign is natural and seamless,” said Jay Beltran, Head of Sales and Marketing, Digital Advantage Corporation (DAC).

The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), led by its Chairperson and CEO Atty. Frank Quijano, has a booth where seniors will be guided on how to register in its database, which the agency hopes to build to take stock of the living situation, health concerns, skills and other important information about the country’s roughly 11 million senior citizens. The NCSC will also bring volunteers to help seniors in tech tutorials.

“We thank Globe for embarking on this program that addresses major concerns when it comes to seniors: digitalization and online safety. We at NCSC have been pursuing our own efforts to bring the elderly into the digital space safely, and we are happy to find an ally in the private sector to introduce seniors to new technologies while at the same time protecting them from the dangers that lurk online,” Quijano said.

Rep. Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay of United Senior Citizens Partylist is also on board, bringing senior citizen delegates to the event.

“We’d like to congratulate Globe for giving seniors priority through its #SeniorDigizens campaign. This is an initiative worth emulating. United Senior Citizens Partylist is one with Globe in seeing this through,” said Aquino-Magsaysay.

The Quezon City government also brought a delegation of senior citizens to the event and provided crucial logistics support.

“The city government of Quezon City is proud to partner with Globe in this undertaking. In QC, we give our seniors top priority in terms of public services to help them live their sunset years as active and productive members of society. This project is key in helping them transition into a digital life and help them enjoy the benefits of modern technology,” said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Meanwhile, #TeamGlobeofGood influencers Kiray Celis and Chuckie Dreyfus are lending their talent and bringing entertainment to the event, while internet personality Lester “Buji” Babiera, a talent of Globe Group agency NYMA, is bringing his brand of dynamic hosting onstage.

The #SeniorDigizen learning session, a significant effort to close the digital divide for the elderly, follows the success of the “Teach Me How to Digi” TikTok contest held in September last year. The contest received over 200 impressive videos showcasing tech lessons imparted by younger family members to their senior loved ones.

At the event, Globe will award 25 winners with prizes worth P25,000. They will also get to take part in the learning session.

"We are excited to help our senior citizens take their first steps into the digital world, ensuring they are not left behind in this fast-paced digital era. This event is our commitment to ensuring that they are not just consumers of technology but actively engaged in the evolving tech-savvy society,” said Liza Reyes, Public Relations and Communications Strategy Head at the Globe Group.

Globe’s #SeniorDigizens campaign promises not only to educate but also inspire a new generation of empowered seniors, ready to engage and connect in today's rapidly evolving digital environment.

Globe’s Hapag Movement fulfills wishes of Cebu scholars through ‘Wish’ screening

Until that evening two weeks before Christmas, 22-year-old Michelle Camus had never been to the cinema. She had only seen movies on television, hearing from friends all about the “ambiance” in a movie theater.

“They say inside the cinema it’s lights off. I thought the lights were turned on. I really wanted to experience this, watching in the cinema. This is not just my wish. Ginusto ko talaga makarating sa cinema (I really wanted to go to a cinema). And at the age of 22, I’m here. So napakasaya naman nito (I’m really happy about this)!” she excitedly said.

Camus is among 69 scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation who were treated to a full cinematic experience organized by Globe’s Hapag Movement, with support from the We Are Ayala Business Club - Cebu (WAABC-Cebu). The scholars enjoyed a private screening of Disney Animation’s latest musical comedy “Wish” on December 12 at the Ayala Malls Central Bloc.

Indeed, it was a wish come true for the scholars, all students of humanities classes under Tzu Chi, among Hapag Movement’s implementing partners. Not only did they get to watch the movie in a private screening in one of Ayala Cinemas’ most comfortable theaters, they also got to enjoy fun games, prizes, food, drinks and other surprises.

“For me it’s a great privilege. Bihira lang maka-join lalo sa ganitong pagkakataon, especially with scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation and together with the Hapag Movement. We’re so blessed. And hopefully marami pang matulungan ang Hapag at napaka-blessed namin sa taon ngayon dahil isa kami sa naimbita sa araw na ito (It is very seldom that we get this kind of opportunity, specially with scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation and Hapag Movement. We’re so blessed and hopefully, there will be more people that the Hapag Movement will be able to help. We are really blessed this year because we got to be invited to be here today),” said Shyrwin Rondina, also among scholars invited to the screening.

Mariel Ybañez, Certified Commissioner at Tzu Chi Foundation Cebu, said: “These activities will help our scholars learn more about life through movies. In Tzu Chi, we teach them values and through this movie “Wish,” they will learn a lot. That’s really the teaching of Tzu Chi, for us to become a star for other people,” Ybañez said.

At the special screening, Patrick Gloria, Globe Group Vice President for External Affairs, spoke to the scholars about the Hapag Movement and thanked collaborators that made the event possible.

“This special screening organized by Globe is supported by WeAreAyala Business Club - Cebu for the benefit of the Hapag Movement. The Hapag Movement is a program where we help the most vulnerable people in society, especially children. We make sure we feed them right and give their families livelihood training so that they will have a sustainable source of income to put food on their table.  Thank you for doing this with us and let’s do this again next year,” Gloria said.

By leveraging technology and partnerships, the Hapag Movement aims to help 100,000 families battling involuntary hunger through supplemental feeding and livelihood training.

Globe’s Hapag Movement volunteers deliver hot meals to Marikina community on World Food Day

Through its #UniteForHapag campaign, Globe’s Hapag Movement, recently brought together volunteers for a supplemental feeding program for vulnerable families in Marikina City, part of its commemoration of World Food Day.

Partnering with Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) PH, Globe recently organized a volunteer activity in Barangay Concepcion Uno, Marikina City, where volunteers were able to prepare 300 meals, and later on distributed it in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City serving a total of 300 individuals. It was led by Globe employees, Team Globe of Good influencers, and media partners, who worked together to prepare and deliver hot meals to beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries include children from low-income and food-vulnerable families in a community that is prone to flooding.

“Through hands-on engagement, our volunteers actively participate in community initiatives, food drives, and educational programs that also tackle food waste. By fostering a spirit of volunteerism, we not only contribute to immediate relief efforts but also empower communities to address the root causes of hunger and food waste in a sustainable manner,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Kerwin King from Team Globe of Good, who joined the feeding program, emphasizes the role of influencers and content creators in advancing the cause.

“To sustain the people’s interest in addressing food insecurity, it’s important for us to communicate. Importante talagang gamitin ang social media like TikTok kasi napaka-powerful ng social media ngayon, but we have to be careful with misinformation para mas marami pa tayong ma-enganyong tumulong sa mga Piipino. Alam ko namang makakabangon tayong lahat,” he stressed.

Another Team Globe of Good Ambassador, host, model and entrepreneur Mela Habijan, invited everyone to be part of the Hapag Movement.

“Through uniting with Hapag, we will be able to not just feed our Filipino families but make them feel hopeful in these trying times. Sa pamamagitan ng pagsasama-sama, ang pag-asang ito ang magiging dahilan para tayo ay maging buo bilang nasyon,” she said.

Spotlight: SOS Philippines

The activity illustrates the impact of the Hapag Movement, a campaign launched in 2022 to address involuntary hunger in the Philippines, which worsened during and in the aftermath of the pandemic marked by accelerated inflation. Among its ecosystem of partners is SOS Philippines, an organization that aims to address food waste.

Data from the Food Consumption Survey by the Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) indicates that the Philippines sees a staggering 1,717 metric tons of food wastage each day. Further highlighting this concern, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines has reported that an average Filipino discards about one tablespoon, or 14 grams, of rice daily. This translates to a daily monetary loss of ₱23 million from wasted rice alone.

Addressing this alarming data, Arthur Winston Bitangcol, SOS Director of Operations, stated, "We estimate that we waste a third of the food that we produce. So that's the reason why SOS and similar food rescue organizations exist to hopefully divert and redistribute food that is otherwise serviceable and fit for human consumption, from the landfills. We encourage food companies that have a food surplus to reach out to us through our social media pages so that we could work together.”

While SOS primarily addresses commercial food waste, Bitangcol noted that the challenge of residential food wastage persists. He implored everyone to practice individual responsibility and be mindful of their consumption, wherever they may be.

The #UniteForHapag campaign calls on individuals and organizations alike to rally behind a shared vision: to end hunger, reduce food waste, and uplift the lives of all Filipinos. The movement emphasizes unity, believing that collectively, they can ensure every Filipino has access to a nourishing meal.

G Music Fest 2023 gathers 11,000 subscribers and fulfills a teenager’s dream

G Music Fest was a blast yet again, as it showcased the remarkable talents of local homegrown artists—both established and up-and-coming—for a night of fun and music.

In its fourth year, G Music Fest left a remarkable impact as a Music and Creator Festival, as underscored by an impressive turnout of over 11,000 attendees, culminating in a night of performances from OPM talents on September 16, 2023, at the Circuit Grounds in Makati.

Attendees from all generations had their fill of original Pinoy music from seasoned and rising artists, such as Urbandub, The Itchyworms, Mayonnaise, Syd Hartha, December Avenue, Lola Amour, Dilaw, PLAYERTWO, Paul Pablo, Sugarcane, Ace Banzuelo, Joem, Nobita, Munimuni, I Belong To The Zoo, BINI, and Drag Race PH Season 2 Queens.

Moreover, since the festival also celebrated creativity and creation, the event featured the Creator Hub, which encouraged self-expression, learning, and creativity through various art and community-building activities, such as live murals and painting with Drip Splash and Paint It Fun.

Another major highlight of the night was showcasing the musical talent of Fritzy, a 12-year-old girl who is a local sensation in Quezon for her drumming skills. She also garners attention on TikTok.

Much to her delight, Fritzy, a loyal Globe customer, traveled from the province to join the #GMusicFest.  Backstage, she high-fived her musical idols and, to her sheer delight, joined December Avenue on stage to perform alongside them, showcasing her incredible drumming skills.

Overwhelmed by the experience, Fritzy exclaimed, "Being on stage with December Avenue was a dream come true! I've always looked up to them, and tonight, it felt like magic. Thank you, Globe! I can't believe I got to share the stage with my musical heroes. This is one of the best nights of my life!"

December Avenue's lead vocalist, Zel Bautista, shared his thoughts on the wonderful experience, saying, "Music has the incredible power to connect us all. Me and December Avenue had the privilege to share the stage with a young fan, Fritzy, letting her play the drums during our performance at Globe G MUSIC Fest. To see the joy, excitement and her passion, It reminded me of why I do what I do. Every artist starts as a fan, with a dream. I am deeply humbled to have played a small part in her musical journey.   When talking about passion, always remember why you started in the first place. Be patient."

As if the music and talent weren’t enough, attendees were also treated to a variety of food choices through handpicked food concessionaires, including Better than Ice Cream (BTIC), Kurimu, Pancake House, Yellow Cab, Sizzlin’ Steak, Shakey’s, Potato Corner, and Army Navy. For those seeking refreshments, Jamba Juice, PICKUP COFFEE, R&B Milk Tea, Pocofino, and San Miguel Brewery served up beverages.

This event was made possible by Coca-Cola, Ayala Malls Zing, Klean Kanteen, KonsultaMD, Parlon, Klook, PetPal, HBO GO, Barangay Nestle, and KitKat. Special thanks go to Philippine Airlines, the official airline partner; BENCH, the official fashion partner; 0917Lifestyle, the official merchandise partner; and MYX, the official media partner.
