Save the Children Philippines launches eSave Natin ang Pasko

Christmas is the most awaited season for most Filipinos, especially children, but the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the way the upcoming holidays will be celebrated—it’s going digital!

Save the Children Philippines is launching eSave Natin ang Pasko, an online fundraising campaign that encourages everyone to unite in saving the Christmas spirit through a series of joyous and meaningful activities to provide joy and hope to children. These include 22 million learners, who have been experiencing major challenges such as the lack of access to learning materials and internet connection, as they struggle to learn from home.

The proceeds of the Christmas fundraising campaign will support the learning needs of children in poor households in Metro Manila, typhoon-stricken places in Eastern Visayas, and the conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. It will also support children with disabilities, those from indigenous communities and from hard to reach areas.

“Even if classes are conducted through distance learning or will resume via face-to-face, millions of children will still need our support as they continue to be deprived of their right to education since their families do not have the means to support their learning needs,” said Atty. Alberto Muyot, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children Philippines.

eSave Natin ang Pasko also promotes the importance of a nurturing home through the “Mapagkalingang Tahanan” advocacy – where every member of the family, especially children, receives the support they need so they learn, survive, and are protected.

“Mapagkalingang Tahanan” emphasizes the critical role of parents, guardians, and caregivers in the continued learning of children and aims to provide them the knowledge and skills to facilitate their children’s learning.

Also, in keeping with the tradition of Christmas caroling, eSave Natin ang Pasko features “Namamasko po!” – a fun group activity by schools, families, and companies showcasing their musical talent and creativity.

eSave Natin ang Pasko will be highlighted by a digital concert entitled “Awit Para Sa Mga Bata” on December 18 where Gary Valenciano, Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, Regine Velasquez Alcasid, Ogie Alcasid, Arnel Pineda, Bamboo, Gian Magdangal, Lara Maigue, Kayla Rivera and Sam Shoaf will serenade the audience in the Philippines and those living abroad with Christmas songs. The digital concert will be produced by prominent theater artists Menchu Lauchengco Yulo and Michael Williams, together with Save the Children Philippines’ Bianca Elizalde. Catch Awit para sa mga Bata online on December 18, 2020, starting at 7pm. If you can’t catch the concert live, the video link will be active until December 19, 2020.

To watch the concert, make a donation through https://ticket2me.net/e/32182.  Each ticket is P800. Your donation will provide one family with a Family Learning Kit to help children learn during the pandemic.

Donors and participants who will pledge their support to eSave Natin ang Pasko will receive tokens of appreciation and a chance to be featured on the social media pages of Save the Children and its Ambassadors Katarina Rodriguez, Xia Vigor, and Ria Atayde.

“Education empowers children especially those in dire situations, and supporting their learning needs will save their lives and their future,” said Muyot.

Coaches Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, Sharon Cuneta Team Up In “The Voice Teens”

Top-rating singing reality show “The Voice” is letting the voices of teens be heard as it opens an all-new season for teens for the first time in Asia soon on ABS-CBN.

Talented artists 13 to 17 years old will take on a musical journey of a lifetime with the guidance of four superstar coaches: Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, and Sharon Cuneta.

“I don’t know what to expect. I joined the ‘Kids,’ now ‘Teens.’ I’m relaxed. It’s nice to be with people you’ve worked with before. It’s exciting, it’s the beginning of something again,” said the Megastar.

The first edition of “The Voice Teens” recently began taping its blind auditions, the first stage of the competition where teen artists from different parts of the country and the world try to get the coaches to turn around for them with only their voice.

“What I like about the teens and what makes things easier is their age is closer (to ours). You can be more critical. It’s a different game this time around. The teens, I’ll still give them a hard time – it’s my job,” said rock icon coach Bamboo.

Like in previous seasons, the coaches have prepared “possible sales pitches” to woo the artists they want to draft into their respective teams. But according to coach Lea, unexpected things happen during the blind auditions that viewers pay more attention to.

“A lot of the times, no matter what kind of preparation you make, you say things that fight for that person, not having prepared anything. Everything just comes out from the heart and it’s spontaneous. And I think it’s more fun when there’s stuff that you don’t expect, that are unplanned,” said the broadway diva.

Returning coach and popstar royalty Sarah is excited to return to coaching and will do anything to win this season.

“I still feel like a teenager. I think you should be familiar with the current hits because it’s their sound and it seems that a lot of them sound alike. The challenge is, how do you bring out the real them?” she said.

Which team will produce the next “The Voice” grand champion? From what part of the country or the world will the next Mitoy, Jason Dy, Lyca Gairanod, Elha Nympha, and Joshua Oliveros come from?

Watch out for “The Voice Teens” soon on ABS-CBN.

‘Annie’ is coming to Resorts World Manila

After the success of different plays and musicals, Resorts World Manila is bringing another beloved classic this September. Annie, an original Broadway musical, will be the seventh major production of Resorts World Manila, through Full House Theater Company (FHTC) at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT).

Annie, whose story was based on a popular comic strip by Harold Gray entitled “Little Orphan Annie”, tells the story of an 11-year old girl looking for her long-lost parents. In her journey to find them, Annie discovered something else.

Annie set a six-year run record at the former Alvin Theater in midtown-Manhattan, New York. With the combination of music from Charles Strouse, lyrics from Martin Charnin and a book from Thomas Meehan, Annie got nominated for 11 Tony Awards where they won 7, including the Best Musical.

Annie is known for some of its award winning songs like “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life”, making it a favorite for big and small productions all over the world. Since then, Annie had been adapted into a film with the third and latest version in 2014, starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, and Rose Byrne.

“We will be singing “Tomorrow” altogether until we make it to September. Annie will surely be a hit like always, bringing fun to everyone and showing the importance of friendship, family, and love. ”

Tomorrow is Lea Salonga’s audition piece that landed her the most-coveted role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon.

Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group Looking for new “Miss Saigon” cast

Miss Saigon put Filipino talent on the map and showed the world how good Pinoy performers are.

Now, years after the first batch of Filipino talent made its mark in London’s West End—and all over the world—a new group of Filipino talent is out to replicate that success when the Miss Saigon company returns to the country to seek out local artists to join the musical.

Lea Salonga, who was the musical’s first Kim (and who went on to great success on Broadway and elsewhere in the theater world) says that if there’s anything Miss Saigon has done, it’s show to the world that the Filipino artist is one that is reliable, dependable, and able to interpret musical theater with the best of them.

“We are artistically right up there, and it makes me proud when any one of us gets that moment in the sun on the international stage. To see many of my friends in the West End and on Broadway makes my heart feel full,” says Lea, who went on to win major awards for her performance.

Singer and stage actress Isay Alvarez played the original Gigi to Lea’s Kim. She too, is grateful that Miss Saigonpaved the way for Pinoy artists to be recognized all over the world.

Being in the musical was both fun and challenging, says Isay. One of the hardest things was learning to work with the sheet music.

“Our counterparts read notes. They were sight readers. But the Pinoys were ingenious,” laughs Isay. “We brought our trusted tape recorders. In terms of adjustments (that we had to make), I’d say it was understanding the ways of our co-actors and production staff. Coming from a different culture was one thing, but they were understanding and Miss Saigon was a very mixed cast anyway.”

The auditions were also fun, but nerve-wracking. It was the first big test they all had to face.

“I was quite nervous, but during that time I was young and eager and my dreams were bursting out of my pores,” recalls Isay. “And to have the Cameron Mackintosh group in the audience was very exciting. They were very professional, and the English are proper anyway, and not intimidating at all. I should say they were very accommodating and I think they were really impressed that they found a mine of talents. They went to many cities and realized that Manila has what they need.”

However, Carla Guevara-Laforteza says that passing the auditions was just the beginning.

“When we passed, we became scholars of the ‘Saigon School’ wherein we were pre-taught the songs and the choreography of the show. From there, we were handpicked on who would be assigned to go to what production (UK, Australia, Germany, and so on). Those chosen for Germany were required to learn the show in German.”

Of course, adjusting to a whole new lifestyle was part of the deal.

Lea had to give up her ‘sheltered’ life to be able to do the things she did there. “The toughest adjustment was just living a less-than-sheltered life. In Manila, all I had to worry about was school and whatever work I happened to be doing. Now, I had to learn how to take public transportation, and write checks for the monthly utilities, in addition to study my music, dialogue, and figure out how to do kissing scenes with a romantic opposite for the first time.

Now, #TeamMissSaigon is back and looking for new talent. Auditions are presently ongoing with Atlantis Productions helping to coordinate the search.

Lea, Isay, Carla and other Miss Saigon alumni have words of encouragement and advice for those considering trying out for the musical.

The first thing, says Pinky Amador, is to realize that sure, it’s fun and it’s an honor to be chosen from among so many artists, but it’s also all about hard work and dedication from the moment one sets foot on the audition stage.

Her advice is to keep in mind that it just isn’t the best singers who make it.

“I have always maintained that in the end, the choices aren't just all about the best voices. They are about the best WORKERS. Remember, you will be working far away from home and facing many personal and artistic challenges. So they need to know that they can trust you. Be professional in every way. Show them they can invest you. Look at everyone they chose: they’re all people with high standards, all exacting and all with impeccable work ethic.”

As always, Lea’s advice is to be professional, even when one is just auditioning.

“First and foremost, show up prepared. Second, show up BEFORE your appointed time. Third, have fun! Enjoy the experience for what it’s worth. You may or may not get the job, but at least you can say you sang for some of the best creative forces in the world. That’s a pretty huge deal in and of itself.”

"Miss Saigon,” a sung-through musical, features music by "Les Misérables" collaborators Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, and lyrics by Boublil and "Closer Than Ever's" Richard Maltby, Jr. with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler, based on Giacomo Puccini's popular opera "Madame Butterfly.”

In an interview with dzMM, Salonga hinted that the warm reception at the premiere could help railroad the reunion movie that has been in limbo.

"I think microcosm siya of a possibly bigger market na siguro tatangkilikin din nila 'yung pelikula namin kung sakaling gumawa kami ng isa pa," she added.

Salonga earlier said that she will be very busy in the remaining months of 2015 and won’t be able to do a movie this year.

Salonga had said that she only wants to be paired with Muhlach because she is already comfortable working with the actor.

“Minsan lang kasi ako gumawa ng pelikula. As in once every 17 years. I don’t do movies very often so I want to be with people that I’m already comfortable with. There are certain risks that I’d like take when I perform live. But when I do a film, I’d like to stay with a team na nakasanayan ko na,” she explained.

This will be the 3rd time Aga and Lea will do a movie together. Aside from "Sana Maulit Muli," Muhlach and Salonga starred in an earlier movie, "Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal."

"In The Voice Kids, we were impressed by big voices coming from little children, and that proves that innate talent of pinoy singers. This season, I got to travel the country and I saw the amazement and joy in each artist when I gave them the envelope. During the blinds, I was surprised and checked some of them. So I got to know their inspirations and motivations," said Luis, who hosted The Voice Kids

The Voice of the Philippines Season 2 will still be hosted by Toni Gonzaga, Alex Gonzaga, Robi Domingo with the addition of Voice Kids host Luis Manzano.

Showbiz Music fans to take the stage at the MYX Music Awards this year

Don’t miss out on the MYX Music Awards, the only music awards show in the Philippines that is aired live on television and is available for streaming over MYX’s official website (www.myxph.com).

The past year saw walls being torn down in the local music scene, where songs and music videos went past what the Philippine audience is used to. When it comes to music, even borders between local television networks and record labels don’t seem to exist anymore.

This year, not only the country’s top bands and musicians who are nominated for different awards will be part of putting together the Philippines’ biggest awards night for music—even showbiz’s stars who are dedicated fans and followers of the local music scene will be taking on the stage to show their support at the MYX Music Awards this year.

The crossover between music and videos stands out even more this year, with the likes of The Voice of the Philippines contestants taking the stage, along with Julia Barretto, Jodi Sta. Maria, Kaye Abad, Tom Rodriguez, Dennis Trillo, Janella Salvador, Jane Oineza, Khalil Ramos, Marco Gumabao, Meg Imperial, Robi Domingo, Gretchen Ho, and many more.

Apart from that, expect intense performances from top music acts, such as Up Dharma Down, Jonalyn Viray, KZ Tandingan, Christian Bautista, Jay-R, Kyla, Sam Concepcion, Quest, Thyro, and Yumi.

This year, MYX will also be declaring the highly anticipated announcement of 2014’s MYX Magna Awardee, given to a historically groundbreaking music act. The MYX Magna Award was given to those who have shaped the local music scene. Icons at the Arena: Masters of OPM on June 16

I love music, I love songs full of life and love. My favorites songs, inspired me with the words and music specially created and sang by Original Pilipino Music masters and great singers.

I’m glad that there will be an amazing and  historic event about to unfold on June 16 , (Saturday), 8 PM at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The biggest names in the Philippine music industry come together in a once-in-a-lifetime one-night grand concert titled “Icons at the Arena: Masters of OPM” to launch the  The Mall of Asia Arena and celebrate the greatness and ingenuity of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). With it a world-class performance that is set to break boundaries, featuring Icons of past and present generations.

Featuring the biggest names in the Philippine music industry, this once-in-a-lifetime concert will feature world-class artists from various generations include Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Jose Mari Chan, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Basil Valdez, Freddie Aguilar, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Juris, Jed Madela, Piolo Pascual, Bamboo, Arnel Pineda, and The Company.

“Icons at the Mall of Asia Arena" will be hosted by Jim Paredes and Pops Fernandez and will be graced by comic TV personalities Pokwang, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola.
Staged by ABS-CBN's Star events, "Icons at the Arena: Master of OPM" with Johnny Manahan as director and Ryan Cayabyab as musical director.

In the world of music there are many great Filipino singers. I love OPM and I'd love to watch the concert. I really hope to witness history unfold and feel the wonderful night of great music. That is always my dream.

I really like Lea Salonga because she is a great singer, with her powerful voice and distinct sound. I first knew her as a ten-year-old girl singing “I Am But A Small Voice” in 1981. And I continue watching her in many shows and listening to her songs. I admire her and proud of her. Lea did something more than making Filipinos proud. The first Filipina ever to win the prestigious Tony Award for her role as Kim in the Broadway Musical "Miss Saigon.”

I love Gary V too! I wish to see him personal! I want to see him in performances live! Gary V,  musician, composer, actor, producer, and gospel singer who is best known for many songs, especially those that became theme songs for movies. His energetic dance moves also garnered him the nickname "Mr. Pure Energy."

Gary V has released  great albums and won the Awit Awards for "Best Male Performer" eleven times. In 1998, he became UNICEF Philippines first National Ambassador. Gary V continues to make music that's both meaningful and relevant to the times. I love his music, especially inspirational songs.
