Minamahal Kita: The Art Of Filipino Love Songs (A Tribute To The 2022 National Artists) all set on September 15

A crossover artist generally refers to an artist who has had substantial success in multiple genres of music. It’s been used particularly to refer to a handful who have marketed themselves as performers of the classical and pop repertoire.

One can make the argument, however, that most of them are simply pop artists who try to sing in a classically trained style.

Going by its definition, or at least by its generally agreed notion, a crossover artist must be someone who, let’s say, has professionally performed operatic roles or oratorio solos while concurrently rocking pop music establishments.

If we go by this definition, then Rogelio B. Peñaverde Jr. is a bonafide crossover artist par excellence.

Peñaverde is a homegrown Filipino who moved to the US to pursue a scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City for a Master’s Degree in Voice. After graduating, he carved a career in opera, sacred music and musical theater with critical acclaim.

The New York Times praised his “sweet sound” while Opera Magazine lauded him as an “incisive tenor”.

Some of his career highlights include the role of Ferrando from Cosi Fan Tutte (W. A. Mozart) with the Martina Arroyo Foundation, tenor solo in Missa Solemnis in C(L. Mozart) at the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral of New York, and the role of Basel in the Off-Broadway run of Figaro 90210 by Ragman Ventures.

He has also performed as a featured artist at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, the Manhattan Center, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 and wiped away all his engagements, Peñaverde rediscovered his passion and gift for songwriting. While it began as an outlet for anxiety, it became a serious creative endeavor as he churned one pop song after another.

By 2021 he was sitting on 12 compositions that he collectively called the Pearl Drive Project. When Covid restrictions eased, he debuted selections at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, an institution in New York’s independent music scene.

It was so well-received that the show was picked up by the iconic Mercury Lounge in New York City, a hallowed ground of pop music that has featured the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran.

Performing as Ilustrado (his pop alter ego), Peñaverde became the first homegrown Filipino to play a full set of his compositions in this hall. He is scheduled for a repeat after the commercial release of 2 singles from the Pearl Drive Project this fall.

Catch the artistry of Rogelio B. Peñaverde Jr. as this consummate crossover musician visits home in a featured performance on September 15 (Thursday), 5:00 p.m. cocktail reception 6:30 p.m. show proper, at the Main Theater Lobby of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Entitled MINAMAHAL KITA: THE ART OF FILIPINO LOVE SONGS (A TRIBUTE TO THE 2022 NATIONAL ARTISTS), the show was conceptualized by Peñaverde and produced by the Friends for Cultural Concerns of the Philippines (FCCP) under the leadership of its current president, Martin Lopez.

It will also feature the following guest artists, most of whom are FCCP Scholars:
  • Athena Macatangay (Soprano),
  • Giuseppe Diestro (Cello)
  • Kris Gonzales (Baritone)
  • Lance Capitan (Guitar)
  • Madeline Jane Banta (Piano)
  • Myramae T. Meneses (Soprano)
  • Nathan Gemina (Piano)
Directed by Manolet Garcia, the ensemble will be performing Filipino love songs from both the classical and contemporary repertoire.

The gala is part of Peñaverde’s advocacy to present quality performances of Philippine music here and abroad that educate as much as they entertain.

Proceeds will go towards funding the tuition or travel expenses of the 26 FCCP scholars studying in local and foreign schools.

Since launching last month, audiences both in the Philippines and around the world have enjoyed this fun and family-friendly musical created by Broadway musical director Rick Hip-Flores, brought to life by the talented ensemble of Repertory Philippines. Both kids and their parents relished the chance to root for cheerful and colorful characters, sing catchy Christmas tunes, and take home lessons that make the most wonderful time of the year truly meaningful.

The Great Christmas Cookie Bake-Off! is about eight individuals who joined a televised bake-off at the Cookie Coliseum where they discover new baking skills, cookie flavors, life lessons, and the true meaning of Christmas. Joining the cast are REP and theater veterans like Carla Guevara-Laforteza playing multiple roles for the show—as the stylish Isabel Guevara, a food fashionista with a high sense of aesthetic and one of the judges of the bake off; as Anna’s Mom, your quintessential helicopter parent who watches every detail; and as Patty’s quirky-loving Grandma.

Arnel Carrion is also part of the show playing a double role as Michael Holmes, the meanest guy in the food industry and in the Cookie Coliseum, and as Gabe’s Dad, a big wig TV exec who pushes his son to win at all costs. Jaime Wilson plays pop singer and celebrity guest judge Del Ray who has never baked but can certainly lay down some tasty grooves! Hans Eckstein completes the cast as Larry, the faithful host and announcer of the competition.

Directed by RTYA Creative Director Joy Virata, The Great Christmas Cookie Bake-Off! is the first Repertory Philippines (REP) show in nearly two years and also the first musical in the country purposely filmed for an international online streaming service. Viu launches first Pinoy original STILL

The first Viu Original musical created by award winner Pat Valera with a powerhouse cast and a production backed by the brightest in the Philippines' theater and music industries

Viu, PCCW’s leading pan-regional OTT video streaming service, proudly launches its first original musical narrative series featuring a powerhouse cast of Filipino artists from the country’s music, film and theater scene.

STILL was created by Palanca-awardee Pat Valera, who is known for award-winning shows Dekada ‘70 the Musical and Mula Sa Buwan. Theater industry greats Giancarlo Abrahan and Nicco Manalo co-created the series with Valera. On the director’s chair is Treb Monteras II of the internationally-acclaimed rap musical Respeto. Multi-awarded screenwriter, director, producer and editor Monster Jimenez produced the series.

Ms. Arianne Kader-Cu, Country Head of Viu Philippines, said, “We are extremely honored and thrilled to be working with such a talented team that has produced a musical we hope impresses the world over. The story itself is relevant and we believe that STILL will resonate with all of us who have gone through this pandemic. We can’t wait for our Viu-ers to have access to STILL and get to know and love the characters, be hooked on the storyline, and sing their hearts out to the beautiful original soundtrack featured in the program.”

The eight-episode series follows the story of talented upcoming artists participating in Daloy Himig, a music camp that abruptly ends when the pandemic hits. With quarantine protocols placed around the country, the campers are left stuck in Balay, with only their music and each other to keep them company.

Leading the campers are estranged best friends Laura, always the relentless dreamer who fights for herself, for the people she loves and for the limelight (played by Julie Anne San Jose, Asia’s limitless star), and Sab, the voiceless writer who wants to follow her dreams but can’t (played by Gab Pangilinan, Philippine theater princess). The two instantly become friends with veteran camper Iggy (Mike Shimamoto), always ‘the happy pill’ Tugs (Abe Autea) and tired-but-still-a-fighter Leigh (Lance Reblando). Along with their mentors Nikolas (Christian Bautista, Asia’s romantic balladeer) and Annette (Bituin Escalante, veteran stage and concert singer), the campers’ lives and stories intertwine through powerful and poignant music. Through song and stage, they hope and rage to prove to the world that they still have a voice – that they still matter.

STILL is available now on Ticket2Me. New episodes will be added every week and can be viewed multiple times within a 32-hour window. For a special rate of P599, Viu-ers can avail of an Exclusive Viu Package (a free six-month Viu Premium subscription plus a free digital STILL chord book) with early access per STILL episode. Meanwhile, Viu subscribers can start streaming STILL on their devices on November 26, 2021.

Filipinos can also listen to the show’s 13 original songs performed by the country’s best talents via Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal.

Watch Matilda on the final weekend at the Meralco Theater

“Even if you’re little, you can do a lot” says a line in Naughty which is probably the most popular song from the well-loved and award – winning musical Matilda. This says much about Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group’s latest offering as it stages for the first time in the Philippines Roald Dahl’s classic story about Matilda – an amazing little girl with extraordinary intelligence and psychokinetic powers. Now on its final weekend from December 8 – 10 at the Meralco Theater, this musical shows how little Matilda and her friends fought against the injustices of childhood with their wit, bravery and by being a little bit naughty.

Since its opening performance last November 10 at the Meralco Theater, Matilda the Musical has been highly-acclaimed by theater-goers both young and old making it one of the best theater events this season. Headlining this wonderful musical treat dubbed by Jovic Yee in an article as “the future of Philippine theater”, are three equally talented and brilliant Matildas – Esang de Torres, Felicity Kyle Napuli and Uma Naomi Martin.

From the outstanding performances of theater veterans and the amazing young actors who played Crunchem Hall’s revolting children to its masterfully crafted set design this musical is certainly a delightful production.

“There was not a moment that there was no anticipation, not a second that there was no excitement, not a blip where there was no engagement between audience and production”, says theater critic Sujata S. Mukhi. Another theater critic and online editor Vladimir Bunoan, described the musical as one that should easily appeal to the Harry Potter crowd with its dark and magical themes, empowered characters and imaginative visuals. Atlantis’ staging of this Dahl classic is one that captured the hearts of its audience – a powerful representation of an innocent story with a poignant charm that knows no age.

There will be no re-runs so catch Matilda The Musical on its final weekend from December 8 – 10 at the Meralco Theater. Tickets are available at Ticketworld (call 891-9999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph).

Classic and timeless love story, “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical” , a musical theater event not to be missed!

In restless times like the one we are living through, “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical” resonates even more. “It shows that in the midst of the squalor, despair, and violence, pure love still exists like the one shared by Julio Madiaga and Ligaya Paraiso,” says award-winning auteur Joel Lamangan,  helming the stage musical version of the Edgardo Reyes novel which spawned the Lino Brocka classic film version that starred Bembol Roco and Hilda Koronel.

With timeless love story, great voices, resonant songs, fabulous dances and world class Filipino performers. Grand Leisure Corporation is set to make local musical theater history with the staging of the much-awaited “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical.”

Among his contemporaries, Lamangan is widely-regarded as the most adept social chronicler with films like “The Flor Contemplacion Story,” “Hubog,” “Bulaklak Ng Maynila” and others to his credit. All these films mirror some of society’s most chronic ills. Lamangan has vast experience as filmmaker and actor in film, television, and theater.

In 2013, Lamangan was named artistic director of Gantimpala Theater Foundation under which he directed the musical “Katipunan: Mga Anak ng Bayan.”

Presenting Full Cast and production heads of  “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical” during the media conference held at the Kia Theater, Cubao, Quezon City, August 29, 2017.

“Maynila… The Musical” was a brainchild of Lamangan and Gantimpala Theater Foundation. The 40-year old theater company founded by the late Philippine theater icon Tony Espejo, has the National Artists Production Series which aims to bring closer to theater aficionados the works of National Artists like Severino Montano, Nick Joaquin, Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero, and F. Sionil Jose. “’Maynila…’ was supposed to be the first movie by a National Artists for Film (Lino Brocka) to be part of the National Artists Production series.”

Based on the Edgardo Reyes novel and inspired by the Brocka film adaptation, the initial challenge for Lamangan and his artistic staff was to synthesize the prose into a two-act, two-hour play featuring soaring music and brilliantly choreographed dance routines.

“Dapat ‘yung mga tauhan ay lumabas na mga tunay na taong may puso, kaluluwa, at damdamin na kumakanta at sumasayaw,” shares Lamangan. “Dapat na maramdaman ng mga manonood na nagkukuwento sila ng ukol sa kanilang mga agam-agam, hinaing, siphayo, at pangarap.”

Rita Daniela and Aicelle Santos as Perla

To realize his vision of a realistic depiction of the great, if doomed love story of Julio Madiaga and his inamorata Ligaya Paraiso, Lamangan gathered an artistic staff composed of people that he trusts can deliver the goods: Von De Guzman (Composer and Musical Director), Jose Victor Torres and Em Mendez (Libretto), Joey Nombres (Lights Designer), Douglas Nierras (Choreographer), and Jun Flavier Pablo (Production Design). Fullhouse Asia Production Studios, Inc. acts as line producer.

Composer and Musical Director Von De Guzman has collaborated with Lamangan in many of the latter’s film projects. He has done musicals meant for school productions but “Maynila…” will be his first mainstream musical of this scope. “Direk Joel wanted memorable melodies for the play,” relates De Guzman, “so the ballads will have the feel of a George Canseco and/or Willy Cruz composition, the fast numbers we have incorporated very Filipino elements of singkil, ati-atihan chants, mostly percussion-driven kind of music. And then we have the strains of kundiman in the other numbers.”

De Guzman adds, was to merge OPM romanticism with the orchestral power of a Stravinsky. De Guzman also utilized Filipino instruments that we seldom hear like the banduria.

The next step was to find powerful singers from the leads to the chorus. “They have to have lungs of steel,” notes De Guzman.

Actors Arman Ferrer, Sheila Valderrama-Martinez, and Lara Maigue easily fill the bill. Ferrer plays Julio Madiaga and sees the role as “a good learning experience, especially the parts where I have to dance.”

Valderrama-Martinez and Maigue are alternating as Ligaya Paraiso. “I was excited to join this production because I wanted to work with Joel Lamangan whom I’ve never worked with before,” says Valderrama-Martinez. Maigue is burning the midnight candles, so to speak, to bring justice to her interpretation of Ligaya Paraiso, a victim of circumstance. “I’ve been watching Hilda Koronel in the Brocka movie over and again and I’ve been talking to friends from UP where they worship before the shrine of ‘Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag."
“Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical” is a musical theater event that shouldn’t be missed and worth saving the ticket price for. “It’s a musical told from the point of view of the novelist,” says Lamangan. “It features wonderful composition from Von De Guzman, topnotch dance from Douglas Nierras, three-dimensional characters, heartfelt moments, stirring scenes meant to enthrall and entertain.”

Giving life to the other important characters in the musical are Floyd Tena (Pol), Noel Rayos (Atong), Rafa Seguion-Reyna and Joseph Puducay (Imo), Aicelle Santos and Rita Daniela (Perla), Jim Pebanco/ Joseph Billezar (Mr. Balajadia), Khalil Kaimo (Gido), Jeffrey Camanag (Omeng), Romcel Binquis (Benny), Randy Rey (Frank), and Dulce and Ima Castro alternating as Mrs. Cruz.

“Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical” is made possible through the generous support of KIA Theater, Cibo, Epson, Erase Placenta, SvelT’I Health & Beauty Centre, and Mr. Swabergers.

“Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical”

“Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical”, based on the Edgardo Reyes timeless novel and inspired by National Artist for Film Lino Brocka’s classic film adaptation will be this coming September and October with surprised revelatons.

“Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical” is about love that will go the distance, both literally and figuratively. It is also about the loss of innocence and why in a dark, downtrodden jungle that is the big city, pure love is not given room to grow and thrive. It is set to soaring music and meticulously-choreographed dance.

Recently, Grand Leisure Corporation proudly reveals the lead cast of the much-awaited “Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical.”

World class performers Arman Ferrer will be playing Julio Madiaga while Shiela Valderrama-Martinez and Lara Maigue will be alternating as Ligaya Paraiso.

Arman Ferrer
Lara Maigue
Shiela Valderrama-Martinez
Bringing it to life on stage are Joel Lamangan (Director), Von de Guzman (Musical Director), Jose Victor Torres and Em Mendez (Libretto), Joey Nombres (Lights Designer), Douglas Nierras (Choreographer) and Jun Flavier Pablo (Production Design). Fullhouse Asia Productions, Inc. serves as line producer.

Last seen as Emilio Aguinaldo in Nicanor Tiongson's critically acclaimed Steampunk Musical "Mabining Mandirigma" which won him the PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY 2015 award for Best Featured Male in a Musical, Ferrer is a classical singer, a musical theater actor, and a choral conductor. He has played lead roles with Tanghalang Pilipino, Tanghalang Ateneo, and Dulaang UP.

The resume doesn’t stop there. Ferrer has been a featured soloist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also worked with the top conductors in the country such as Gerard Salonga, Josefino Chino Toledo, Jonathan Velasco, Eudenice Palaruan, Mark Anthony Carpio and Herminigildo Ranera.

Clinching the coveted role of Julio, says Ferrer, wasn’t a walk in the park. “It wasn’t an easy audition,” he recalls. “There was an intense dancing piece that we had to learn the same day and I must admit that dancing isn’t my forte.”

Ferrer knows that Julio Madiaga, the rural hero of “Maynila” who goes to the big city to find his beloved Ligaya Paraiso is not just any other role. "There is always excitement when you are asked to play a lead role. It's always fun but there is also a big responsibility attached to it. Every time I play the lead role I make sure that I play it sincerely. I cannot allow my portrayal to be shallow and pedestrian. So I study the character as much I can in order for me to portray him as close to the truth as possible."

Ligaya Paraiso is decidedly a tragic character, a young woman lured to find a better life in Manila only to end up mired in the oldest profession in the world. Shiela Valderrama-Martinez brings her vast theater experience to the role. “Every role is a challenge. It is such an honor to play a part that was portrayed by the great Hilda Koronel in the movie adaptation.”

In a career that spans 25 years and counting, Valderrama-Martinez has won citations as Best Actress in a Musical and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best New Female Recording Artist in the prestigious Awit Awards.

She has just finished doing “50 Shades The Musical Parody,” and reprised the role of Kapitana Mary Jane in the 2016 rerun of the Filipino hit musical "RAK of Aegis" where she was nominated Best Actress in a Featured Role in the 2016 Gawad Buhay Awards.

Young soprano Lara Maigue also writes songs and has been in different parts of the world doing solo cultural concerts. A graduate of the UP College of Music, Maigue has appeared on television as one of the lead stars of TV5’s musical serye “Trenderas.”

Ligaya Paraiso, shares Maigue, is her “most mature role” to date. “I would always play the little girl in operas and an ingenue on TV so ‘Maynila’ heralds that it is time to sort of grow up in the roles that I take on.”

Tapped to play the other important characters in the musical are Floyd Tena (Pol), Noel Rayos (Atong), Rafa Seguion-Reyna and Joseph Puducay (Imo), Aicelle Santos and Rita Daniela (Perla), Jim Pebanco/ Joseph Billezar (Mr. Balajadia), Khalil Kaimo (Gido), Jeffrey Camanag (Omeng), Romcel Binquis (Benny), Randy Rey (Frank), and Dulce and Ima Castro alternating as Mrs. Cruz.

“Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical” performances are slated on September 30, 3:00pm and 8:00pm (Gala), October 1,2017 3:00pm and 8:00 pm October 4,2017 8:00pm, October 5,2017 8:00 pm, October 6, 2017 3:00pm and 8:00 pm

The beneficiary of the musical is Gantimpala Theater Foundation, the company that spearheaded the National Artist Production Series in which short stories and plays written by National Artists for Literature and Theater are produced for the stage for people to enjoy and appreciate the artistic contributions and legacies of these Filipino literary and theater legends.

Natural is still best to de-stress your tress

Stress? Depressed?

People all over the world are full of stress because they're juggling their job, family, children and countless other variables.  Under stress, we may feel tense, nervous, or on edge. You start to have a shorter temper, you're depressed, you don't like your job anymore and nothing ever seems to get done at home or at work.

Striking a life balance is no easy task to do. It requires hard work and dedication which sometimes can be strenuous to achieve. Can you imagine how overtaxing it is to juggle between your career and providing for your loved ones?

Studies have shown that stress is commonly caused by interrelationships, such as having to deal with work issues and family-related complications. If left unresolved over time, it could lead to immune deficiency, which later on, might cause other parts of our body to show signs of disruption like hair loss.

Many of us could attest to that. It’s like always autumnal equinox whenever we experience chronic hair fall, most especially at the prime of stress. At its peak, our white blood cells attack no less than the follicles, thus causing alopecia. What’s more, anxiety could drive your mane into a prolonged resting phase, which is called telogen effluvium.

Stress experienced by the body or beyond our coping resources could trigger hair loss symptoms, which, if not addressed properly, could result to early baldness. Worried about this? Fret no more. You can beat it simply by relaxing, eating or flexing some muscles.

Never underestimate the power of sleep. If you feel that you are over your head in dealing with anxieties, choose to rest it off for a while and recharge.
