Revisit The Hunger Games saga on Lionsgate Play before Watching The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Many still hail The Hunger Games franchise as the peak of the dystopian genre even though the first movie premiered over a decade ago. Adapted from Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel of the same name, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games movies thrust viewers into the world of Panem where a band of rebels led by Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) attempts to overthrow an oppressive government. With a gripping narrative, intricate world-building, and a spectacle of violence and power, the trilogy grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide, kickstarting a trend of dystopian movies in the 2010s.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Press play on a nostalgic marathon of The Hunger Games saga, exclusively
                                                           streaming on Lionsgate Play.
                                             -------------------------------------------------------------

No one is ready to say goodbye to the world of Panem just yet. The latest installment from the franchise, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is set to hit the big screen on November 15. A prequel film set 64 years before the events of the first movie, it explores the childhood of a young President Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) before he stepped to power in Panem.

Dystopian genre lovers will be thrilled to know that all of The Hunger Games movies are available for streaming exclusively on Lionsgate Play. So if you need to revisit the world of Panem and lose yourself once again in epic stories of survival, courage, and hope this is your cue to hit that play button!

The Hunger Games (2012)

Jennifer Lawrence brought Katniss Everdeen to life when she portrayed the bow-and-arrow-wielding teenager from the post-apocalyptic, dystopian nation of Panem. Katniss is a resourceful sixteen-year-old hardened from years of providing for her family in District 12. She heroically volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the 74th Hunger Games, a televised event where tributes from each district are forced to fight to the death for the Capitol’s entertainment. Katniss and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) form an unlikely alliance and, in doing so, unintentionally defy everything the Capitol stands for.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Catching Fire picks up where the first movie left off, with Katniss and fellow victor Peeta on a Victory Tour of Panem. However, Katniss senses their newfound fame is just the spark needed to set ablaze a simmering rebellion against the oppressive government. To control Katniss as the symbol of resistance, the Capitol holds a Quarter Quell for the 75th Hunger Games. This year, tributes from each district will be chosen from the existing pool of victors, forcing Katniss and Peeta back into the arena. But things are not as they seem. Plans have been set in motion and the pair are thrust in the midst of a rebellion that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)

Katniss is rescued from a devastating Quarter Quell and embraces becoming a symbol of the rebellion. After the Capitol reduces her home to rubble, she now lives in a supposedly nonexistent District 13 under the leadership of President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore). Katniss becomes the Mockingjay, a symbol of the rebellion. She attempts to save Peeta who was kidnapped by the Capitol. Throughout Mockingjay Part 1, we see Katniss struggling to cope with the loss of loved ones and the weight of her role in the rebellion.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)

The final film brings the trilogy to a thrilling conclusion. Katniss teams up with her closest friends and fellow rebels – Peeta, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), and Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) – in a bid to defeat President Snow (Donald Sutherland) once and for all. As they take the battle in the streets of the Capitol, the rebels have to navigate through mortal traps, determine who the enemies are, and make moral choices that will determine the future of millions in Panem. In the end, Katniss understands that to truly liberate Panem’s citizens from a war that threatens to kill them all, she has to eliminate every single threat and put a total end to the bloodshed.

Watch all four The Hunger Games films, available exclusively on Lionsgate Play via PLDT Home. Immerse yourself in the dystopian world of Panem, right in time for the prequel!

The real inspiration behind Michelle Marquez Dee’s advocacies : The PLDT Home Ambassador recalls her journey to empowerment

“It felt like forever.”

This is how Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Marquez Dee described the moment when she was announced as the winner last May.

“All you can hope for is that destiny is on your side — and it was on that night of May 13. When they finally called my name, honestly, I just felt like all the hard work paid off. When you’ve dedicated your whole life and everything for that moment to happen, mapapabagsak ka. I actually bent over because of relief, happiness, and gratitude.”

28-year-old Michelle will represent the Philippines at Miss Universe in El Salvador in November.

She is the finest fit, even PLDT Inc. Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan himself said upon meeting her, along with the other Miss Universe Philippines queens at a PLDT and Smart exclusive meet-and-greet with executives and employees at Ramon Cojuangco Building in Makati City recently.

“We could think of no better woman to proudly bear the flag at this year’s Miss Universe pageant than Michelle,” Pangilinan said. “She is smart with her confidence and authentic with her advocacies. We at PLDT fully stand beside her. We have no doubt that she will be one of the strongest queens in the field, and that she will go very far.”

Deepening her connections

Michelle celebrates, and at the same time, bears on her shoulders the legacy of her mother Melanie Marquez in the pageant world. Melanie is the youngest Miss International, winning the title when she was only 15 years old in 1979. Later on, she became a successful actress, starring in comedy films and TV sitcoms.

An actress, model, and PLDT Home ambassador, Michelle enjoys a close relationship with her parents and siblings, with whom she always stays connected through video calls.
“My mom is one of my biggest inspirations. She is responsible for why I am so strong,” she says. “She is somebody that I really look up to. She was nothing but proud. She instilled in my mind that I should shine as my own woman, be confident in what I have and what I have to offer.”

PLDT Home Ambassador Michelle Marquez Dee and mom, actress, and Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez have maintained a close relationship through the years.

On the night Michelle won, pageant fans went wild when they saw what netizens dubbed “the snake walk.” She recalls, “The inspiration was really my mother. My trainer Ian Mendajar and I were conceptualizing the walk and really trying to personalize my choreography. We had always aspired to integrate my mom as an inspiration throughout my journey and we felt like this was the right moment.”

Michelle wanted to do something special during the coronation night because it was Mother’s Day the following day. “I dedicated my whole journey to my mom and my family. I owe it to them that I’m a strong and empowered individual.”

Michelle’s international pageant journey would have commenced in 2019 when she won Miss World Philippines, but the pandemic happened. She then joined Miss Universe Philippines 2022, where she won Miss Universe Philippines Tourism, second to Filipino-Italian Celeste Cortesi who won the crown, with the two becoming close friends over time. Early this year, Michelle became part of the cast of the fantasy drama Mga Lihim ni Urduja, which premiered in February, and throughout the MUP competition — where she first had to compete to represent Makati — she was running on only a few hours of sleep between the pageant competition and taping.

Throughout her busy schedule, Michelle constantly communicated with her family and friends. And thanks to social media, powered by the fastest broadband connection provided by PLDT Home, she realized just how much of a positive impact she had on her fans and that she could have on young people – especially young girls who aspire to be successful in and outside the pageant circuit.

“Miss Universe is undoubtedly one of the biggest platforms to really create positive change around the world, and that’s my main goal. I want to set a great example for people to become empowered and transformational leaders,” she says. “To finally walk this path is absolutely amazing. I’ve had one of the hardest times in the past few months, and it was all worth it. Hard work and dedication can get you anywhere you want in life.”

Spreading the word on her causes

PLDT Home Ambassador Michelle Marquez Dee in support of Autism Society Philippines’ Angels Walk for Autism last April, with brother Mazen who also has special needs.

Now that she has an enormous opportunity to push her advocacies and start conversations around autism, Michelle says that everything she does must have a purpose.

“My two siblings on the autism spectrum are my lifelong mission. Being able to give to them what they need and to be a part of the solution is something that I don't take lightly. I know the kind of life I want them to live, I know what is lacking in the Philippines and the world. It means the world to me to be part of such a positive change for my siblings and for everybody that's on the autism spectrum as well.”

“At Autism Society Philippines, we see every individual on the spectrum as having their own talent and we want them to live fulfilled and empowered lives. That's why I really advocate for acceptance, inclusivity, and awareness. My two siblings were also there during the coronation night, cheering for me. I knew that they understood that this competition was for them,” she adds.

Michelle is a true example of a Filipino with an open and welcoming heart for everyone regardless of color, gender, or station in life. Even at a young age, she was participating in the charities her family was involved in. Her grandmother founded the Inner Peace Foundation over 40 years ago, which Michelle now heads.

“My father always taught me that if you have the means to give back, then you should always give back. I’m so grateful to have such strong pillars in my life, teaching me that the only way to go is to make sure that people around you are safe and taken care of.”
PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan with (L-R) Miss Universe Philippines 2023 2nd Runner-up Angelique Manto, Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and PLDT Home Ambassador Michelle Marquez Dee, Miss Charm Philippines 2024 Krishnah Marie Gravidez, and Miss Universe Philippines 2023 1st Runner-up Christine Juliane Opiaza.

PLDT Home Senior Vice President and Head for Consumer Business Jeremiah de la Cruz with (L-R) Miss Universe Philippines 2023 2nd Runner-up Angelique Manto, Miss Charm Philippines 2024 Krishnah Marie Gravidez, Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and PLDT Home Ambassador Michelle Marquez Dee, and Miss Universe Philippines 2023 1st Runner-up Christine Juliane Opiaza.

Going back to her roots

Michelle takes to heart the lesson her family taught her: “To always walk life full of gratitude, love and kindness.”

No wonder that when she was asked during the pageant what to her is the best the country can offer the world, she answered straight from the heart. It’s always the people. As she said, “We are the true heart and soul of the Philippines with the way we are hospitable, with our warm smiles. And we are the reason why the world keeps coming back for more. No matter where the universe takes me, I'll always be proud to call the Philippines my home. And no matter what happens I will always be proud to call myself Pinoy.”

Mompreneurs win big at Gawad Madiskarte 2023 for their hard work, creativity, innovation

Women entrepreneurs helping each other is a beautiful thing to witness. By fostering a supportive ecosystem and prioritizing social impact, they are driving positive change on multiple fronts. These women are the inspiring mompreneurs of Madiskarte Moms (MMPH), an online community of Filipino mothers who want to learn, start, and grow their online home businesses while enjoying their home life.
Gawad Madiskarte 2023 Winners (From L-R) Joelle Dianne F. Venegas of Golden Pots Agriculture, Jazel T. Gallaza of Kapekoh, Irene D. Herrero of Jacob's Gourmet Food, Eraiza Camille A. Ramos of Eleira’s Crochet, Catherine K. Fabello of Cami Candles, Erica Joana Angela Redrico of Produkto PH, Rojerette May Martin-Pimentel of Moms@Work Management Consultancy Firm and DigiTalent, and Ayn Stephanie Buyco Angeles of HERS by Godfather

At the second annual Gawad Madiskarte, which recognizes mompreneurs with creative and innovative businesses, eight women stood out for creating successful businesses that made a transformative impact not only in their own lives, but also in the communities around them.

PLDT Home first launched Gawad Madiskarte in 2022 to celebrate mompreneurs and to encourage more women to act on their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs.

The audience at the awards luncheon -- many of them also tireless and hardworking mompreneurs—was inspired to hear the winners talk about their struggles and successes, many with tears in their eyes. It was also heartwarming to hear how Madiskarte Moms PH, the tight-knit community of local mompreneurs honored by Gawad Madiskarte, was the catalyst that changed their lives for the better.

Six winners from the Start Up and Scale Up categories received P100,000 each, three Special Award winners received P50,000 each from PLDT Home, and a trophy by world-class sculptor Ram Mallari. Each winner also received a one-year PLDT Home Fiber subscription, a laptop from ASUS, and a one-year Canva Pro subscription.

Start-Up Category

Gawad Madiskate 2023 Start-Up Winners

In the Start Up category, Diskarteng Angat was awarded to Catherine K. Fabello of Cami Candles; Diskarteng Digital went to Eraiza Camille A. Ramos of Eleira’s Crochet; and Diskarteng May-Puso went to Joelle Dianne F. Venegas of Golden Pots Agriculture.

Eraiza Camille Ramos learned to crochet because she didn’t have the money to buy nice clothes for her newborn daughter, she said when she accepted the trophy. When she started posting monthly photos of her baby wearing crochet headbands, hats, socks, and dresses on Facebook, her inbox was flooded by mommies inquiring whether she was selling them online. “I started and grew my business online,” she said as her cute products were flashed on the screen behind her.

Today, Eleira’s Crochet sells crocheted baby clothes and accessories, dolls and toys, and even Christmas ornaments. The young mom has truly embraced digital tools to help her business grow.

Mom of three boys Catherine Fabello of Cami Candles said that during the pandemic, she experienced anxiety and couldn’t sleep. Instead of allowing her mental health to deteriorate or passively waiting for the pandemic to be over, she leapt into action.

“Why not make something out of the problem I’m currently dealing with?” she said. The solution for her was to make aromatic candles. “I also wanted to help others who were experiencing the same thing, lalo na yung mga mahirap makapag-relax,” she added.

Remember the plantito and plantita craze that reached its peak during pandemic? Joelle Dianne F. Venegas of Golden Pots Agriculture started selling plants knowing that people found them relaxing to have around in their houses and gave them something to physically care for.

“Then I discovered that there was a better product with fewer competitors—organic fertilizers,” she narrated. For the first two years she sold only one type of organic fertilizer but has since expanded and focused on seeds, herbs, and other organics.

“As a mother, I realized that it’s important to teach children environmental protection, and that we can reconsider our lifestyle choices to ensure that we have a bright future,” she said.

Scale Up Category
Gawad Madiskate 2023 Scale-Up Winners

In the Scale Up category, the award for Diskarteng Angat was given to Irene D. Herrero of Jacob's Gourmet Food; Diskarteng Digital went to Rojerette May Martin-Pimentel of Moms@Work Management Consultancy Firm and DigiTalent; and Diskarteng May-Puso went to Erica Joana Angela Redrico of Produkto PH.

Irene D. Herrero or “Chef Irene” is a single mom of four kids. She’s one of the pioneer manufacturers of 100% organic gourmet food in the Philippines. Chef Irene believes that everyone has the power to keep toxins out of their body—but they must have products to choose from to make that decision.

“I started with three kilos of tuyo,” she said. “And from there, dumami ang products namin.” Jacob's Gourmet Food’s product range includes pasta sauces like creamy tuna pesto and Italian pepperoni; Filipino favorites tuyo, dulong, dilis, bagnet, gambas and suka. Chef Irene scaled up Jacob's Gourmet Food not only in the Philippines, but in 28 other countries as well.

Rojerette May Martin-Pimentel’s Moms@Work provides consultation and talent, and education for moms who want to become freelancers. “Freelancing allows anyone to work remotely,” she said, “and you can offer that service to clients anywhere in the world.” Her company “wants mothers to be able to earn a living while looking after their families.”

Moms@Work is a one-stop website for those looking for talents and those offering their particular set of skills to employers. “Technology really brings us closer to our dreams and closer to our goals.”

Thirty-one-year-old Erica Joana Angela Redrico, wife and mother to an 11-year-old, considers her company a “curator” of products. Produkto PH is a multi-vendor online marketplace for ingenious Filipino entrepreneurs. More than just a retail concept, it brings together like-minded people who want to support their communities, so buyers need only one online store to choose from multiple vendors.

Produkto PH also holds physical pop-up events. “Wherever you look, there are products and people who make them,” she said. “They just need someone to support them.” As an example, she mentioned the weavers from Aklan who made P100,000 in two days of a Produkto PH selling event. “This enabled them to open a small shop in Aklan.”

Special Awards
Gawad Madiskate 2023 Special Awardees

Gawad Madiskarte also gave special awards to three mompreneurs. Diskarteng Malikhain went to Ayn Stephanie Buyco Angeles of HERS by Godfather; Diskarteng Pasulong was awarded to Jazel T. Gallaza of Kapekoh; and Diskarteng Homebiz to Eraiza Camille A. Ramos of Eleira’s Crochet.

Jazel T. Gallaza, mother of two, is a former OFW and creator of Kopekoh corn coffee. During the pandemic, she found herself unemployed and without income. She was torn between going back to working on a cruise ship or staying in the Philippines and putting up a business.

Jazel said she prayed to God for a sign on what to do. Despite the uncertainties, the latter option won in her heart. “Nagkasakit ako ng acid reflux, and I thought, what did my lolo give us kapag sumasakit ang tiyan namin? That gave me the idea to make corn coffee, and we had to go to Bukidnon to source the corn.”

Kapekoh proves that even an old idea (corn coffee is common in the provinces) can become new again to a whole new market.

Ayn Stephanie Buyco Angeles said that 95% of their clients for handcrafted shoes by HERS by Godfather are online. The Marikina-made shoes are loved by their clients from different parts of the Philippines and abroad. Her brand has become synonymous with quality, good design and craftsmanship.

Ayn said that entrepreneurs need to shut out the “noise and discouragement of other people and focus on themselves, their dreams, and their products.”

Compelling Stories

Actress Marjorie Barretto, one of this year’s Gawad Madiskarte judges, told the women during the awarding, “I want to be like all of you. It was so hard to judge the entries—it took me several days. I read all your stories and sineryoso ko.”

Barretto herself is an entrepreneur with her own online home and clothing brand called Everything Avery. Joining her as judges were Maxine Loyola, AVP & Head of PLDT Home Marketing Public Relations, Influencer Marketing and Brand Advocacies; entrepreneurs Jorge Wieneke and Jenny Wieneke; Janine Khazaiealiabady, owner of Massage MNL; Donna Nievera-Conda, president and co-CEO of Stratworks, Inc.; and Maisie Littaua, Head of Growth for Canva Philippines.

“Big dreams often start with small beginnings, and we have mompreneurs to prove that. They have shown us that motherhood is not an obstacle but the inspiration to do things better at work and in life,” PLDT Home Senior Manager Linette Garcia-Perez said after the awards.

“They have shown us that the love they pour into their families is the same love that fuels their entrepreneurial spirit. For that, we are all grateful.”

Mompreneurs who are already working hard or still aspiring can get the support they need from fellow moms by joining the Madiskarte Moms PH group on Facebook and subscribing on its YouTube channel.
