GCash rolls out ‘DoubleSafe’ to arrest account takeovers

Intensifies information campaign vs scams through GSafeTayo

GCash, the Philippines’ number one financial app, rolls out ‘DoubleSafe’, a game-changing security feature to safeguard its users from account takeovers.
DoubleSafe strengthens the security of GCash’s 76 million users as it prevents unauthorized account access. Before DoubleSafe, GCash already required two levels of authentication or 2-Factor Authentication. The first level of security is the OTP (One-time PIN), a unique number combination sent only to the user’s mobile number. The second level of authentication is the MPIN (Mobile PIN) which is a 4-digit passcode that only the customer or GCash owner should know.

To reinforce the security of customers’ accounts, starting March 2023, GCash will now require all users to activate DoubleSafe in order to add an additional layer of security to their account. This feature will be activated for every first login to a new mobile phone to ensure the continued protection of its users. The feature uses facial recognition, which means that even if a user inadvertently shares their MPIN and OTP to fraudsters, their account cannot be accessed from another device without scanning the owner's face – ultimately preventing account takeovers.

Beyond this security feature, GCash is also closely working with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) in going after fraudsters and scammers. This was formalized by the signing of a memorandum of agreement with PNP-ACG in 2022.

“GCash is one with the PNP-ACG in making sure that these cybercriminals are put behind bars while reminding the public on how to safeguard their accounts,” GCash Head of Fraud Management Miguel Geronilla said. “Together with the authorities, other relevant government agencies and our users, we can ensure that GSafeTayo.”

Along with the launch of Doublesafe, GCash is intensifying its GSafeTayo campaign through a series of awareness and education materials that will help customers identify and avoid fake sellers, suspicious links, as well as other common forms of scams.

Through the campaign, customers are equipped to join the fight, together with GCash, for true account security.

The campaign focuses on providing prevention tips to help the public avoid being scammed:

Don’t open unfamiliar links. Scammers often send messages with links, luring recipients with enticing “prizes” or a chance at a high-paying position. To counter this, GCash has stopped sending links via SMS, emails, and other messaging apps.

Never share personal information. It’s common practice for scammers to call individuals and pose as GCash representatives to gather personal user information. GCash will never ask its customers for MPINs and OTPs and will only reach out to customers through official channels.

Double check before buying. Fake online sellers and shops offer too-good-to-be-true deals to lure individuals into purchasing their products. GCash recommends double checking online offers, as well as checking reviews to ensure authenticity.

“At GCash, the safety and peace of mind of our customers are very important to us. With DoubleSafe and our intensified GSafeTayo campaign, our users will be protected from scammers and account takeovers,” said Geronilla. “But aside from security measures, we are also ramping up reminders to our 76 million users on how they can safeguard their accounts.”

To report scams and other suspicious activities, users can go to the the GCash Help Center via the GCash app or at https://help.gcash.com/, Chat with Gigi, and choose “I want to report a scam.”

Through GCash’s unrelenting efforts to protect its users’ hard-earned money and the collective cooperation of its customers and partners, we can make sure that with GCash, #GSafeTayo.

Don’t Get Fooled: Here’s How You Can Stay Safe Online Amid Scams and Frauds

Scams and frauds designed to gain access to your online profiles—including your digital banking accounts—have been around for years now. But they have noticeably been more frequent and aggressive lately. For instance, you have probably received SMS messages with suspicious-looking links. What’s scary is how these messages now have your name, making them look more legitimate. Others have gotten phishing emails that, at first glance, seem like formal communication from banks or other financial services. It’s becoming harder to distinguish what’s fake from what’s real.

And if you may think it’s easy to identify these schemes, you would be surprised to know that these scams are becoming more and more sophisticated everyday. For one, there are scams, specifically made to target you and your own online habits to better catch you off guard. As scammers evolve their tactics quickly, more and more people have fallen victim to these fraudulent online attacks. In this article, learn some tips and steps on how you can protect yourself from cyber fraud attacks.

Don’t give out personal info mindlessly
Cyber fraud attempts work by making you believe you are talking to a legitimate financial organization or a trusted institution. The email or messages they send will address you by name and often contain personal information no one else should be privy to aside from the companies and services you officially do business with. These scams collect your information beforehand by perusing your social media accounts and other public online forums. Sometimes, the attempts are more targeted: sending you supposed online forms you need to fill up or calling you directly to ask for your personal information in the guise of confirming it for a service or promo.

Treat your personal information as a valuable asset as it is the key that fraudsters use to trick you to unlock your account. Do not post your full name, birth date, address, and other information related to your digital accounts online. Be wary of strangers trying to add you as a contact on your social media accounts as well, as this could simply be a way to get information out of you for future, more specific fraud attempts. To be sure, financial organizations and trusted companies will not call to ask for your info. And they will not call you using an unofficial contact number unprompted.

Be cautious of who you talk to
Scams are made to make you lower your defenses and give out information that could allow fraudsters to access your financial accounts. Often, this is done through emails purportedly from official institutions designed to make you reveal important info such as bank account passwords, credit card details, and digital bank app details. And now, these frauds use SMS and video calls too.

You can detect a scam message by looking at some telltale signs. Scam emails, for instance, usually come from a public email domain account and not the official company email. Some fraud attacks have legitimate-looking email addresses but with a carefully placed misspelling to make it seem official. If you receive a supposed email from your bank that has some typographical errors, it’s a telltale sign.re more direct, asking for your password, card expiry date and CVV, or one-time password (OTP) via video call. A trusted company would never ask for such details via an email, SMS, phone, and video call.

Be mindful of your online—and offline—action and habits
The techniques today usually involve a link that scammers will entice you to click or visit through a promise of job offers or online shopping discounts, among others. These links can lead you to malicious websites that download viruses, ransomware, and other types of malware to your device. Malware is a software that can damage your device. At its worst, it can give scrupulous individuals unauthorized access to your device—and ultimately, all the information stored and saved there. Hence, you should be careful when you receive links from unknown or suspicious individuals. Don’t click links from unknown origins. With telecommunication services starting to ban links in SMS, scammers have used creative ways to include them in their text messages, such as playing with the typography or adding spaces in the website URL. It takes a bit more effort to access the link now, but it also means you still get disruptive spam messages.

But you need to be mindful of your offline actions, too. Scammers don’t just rely on online schemes to get your information. There have been reports, for instance, of scammers approaching you in public, asking to borrow your phone due to an emergency only to try to get your digital bank details and OTP. Others simply look over your shoulders when you make online transactions in public. The rule of thumb is to always keep sensitive information protected. Do not share it with anybody, and make sure your device is secured and out of the sight of other people when you make transactions online in a public place.

But cybersecurity is a shared responsibility between you and your financial service providers. As you take steps to make sure your financial accounts remain safe, your bank should take every step possible with its features, services, and even cyber security education to ensure your hard-earned money is secure and away from the hands of scrupulous online scammers.

RCBC’s fight against cyber fraud
As Rizal Commercial Corporation (RCBC) continues its thrust to accelerate digital adoption with secure and convenient digital services, it also carries on the fight against cybercrime. RCBC believes that the push for digital banking goes hand-in-hand with efforts to provide efficient and secure service.

During RCBC’s #DontGetFooled: Staying Safe Online webinar on security awareness held on October 12, 2022, RCBC Chief Information Security Officer Carlos Tengkiat reiterated how successful online fraud has been in targeting individuals, but has yet to successfully infiltrate organizations, particularly banks and other financial services. “The banking industry is constantly evolving, not only to cater to your needs but also to deliver these convenient services in a secure manner,” Tengkiat said, noting that RCBC is constantly working with other banking institutions, telecommunication companies, and government services to help provide this security. He reiterated RCBC’s digital banking app offers many security features such as two factor authentication, support of biometrics, mandatory change of password for online banking, card locking for lost and misplaced cards, and real-time SMS and email notification for banking transactions, among others. “This is part of our thrust as we aim to educate our customers on how to conduct electronic banking safely.”

He added, “Security, like banking, is a partnership. And we at RCBC are dedicated to be your partner in your journey.”

Parental guidance can keep children protected online

Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program offers free cyber safety eModules

Dangerous characters lurk on the internet, among them cyberbullies, scammers, and online predators who can target children. Thus, knowledge on internet safety is a must for parents and family members who guide them.

Find out how you can protect your kids against online risks and threats with the help of Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) eModules. Watch the videos on Globe’s new cybersafety portal www.makeitsafe.ph.

“Keeping children safe online means staying informed and getting involved so they can be guided and protected against online predators. The involvement of parents and guardians are critical. Let’s create a safer online environment for children together,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe.

Introduced in 2016, the award-winning DTP started as a series of workshops to educate students, teachers and parents on proper online behavior and encourage them to create an open, inclusive, collaborative, and safe online environment. So far, it has reached 4,010 schools, involved over 115,000 teachers, and served over 1.9 million students nationwide.

With the introduction of the hybrid school set up in 2020, DTP also evolved. WWF-Philippines, Cisco Systems make pitch for food security in Northern Palawan amid pandemic

Philippines – In a bid for sustainable food security, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, with the help of Cisco Systems, has committed to the construction of food sheds in rural communities in Northern Palawan.

The project comes in response to livelihood disruptions caused by the pandemic. With lockdown restrictions making travel between towns difficult, many farmers and fishers have had difficulty selling their produce. Regional tourism has also plummeted, pushing coastal communities once reliant on visiting tourists further into poverty.

Loss of livelihood and rising poverty has also placed additional pressure on natural resources, as ailing communities increasingly turn to fishing to meet their daily needs.

To counteract this, WWF-Philippines will oversee the construction of food sheds in twenty communities across the island of Dumaran. A third-class municipality in Northeastern Palawan, Dumaran is separated from the mainland by a thin stretch of water – and in turn has suffered resource shortages throughout the pandemic.

“What they need is a way to grow their own food in the absence of stable livelihoods. With a food shed, you can grow healthy food for less land, with less of an impact to the environment. Food sheds offer a very good, very stable supplement to their current food production methods,” added WWF-Philippines Project Manager Monci Hinay.

Hinay has overseen the construction of food sheds in farming communities across the country. Through the Sustainable Food Systems program, he and his team have promoted sustainable livelihoods and food securities in towns struggling with sparse resources.

The food sheds slated for construction in Dumaran are a combination of low-tech, low-cost gardening innovations that are easily replicable in rural communities. Made of bamboo poles and recycled plastics, the food sheds combine container gardening and hydroponics systems in a multi-level food production system that can handle both poultry and a wide variety of crops.

Each food shed also lowers environmental pressure from fishing communities. With a sustainable supply of fresh produce growing in each food shed, their reliance on fisheries decreases, granting fish stocks room to grow.

Home to endangered species like the Philippine Cockatoo and the Philippine Pangolin, Dumaran is a biodiversity hotspot and an important site for conservationists. Dumaran and the neighboring Araceli are part of a group of six municipalities that comprise the Northeast Palawan Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network, a system of connected MPAs established by WWF-Philippines for the conservation of the regions’ marine resources.

“We’re looking at a win-win scenario, both for these communities and for the environment. People need to eat. The environment needs room to recover. With these food sheds, both is possible,” said Hinay.

Gen. Eleazar: Improved Police Security in NCR brings in more Tourists, Balikbayans

NCRPO Chief P/Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar acknowledged the vital role that ‘peace and order’ plays in the success of the Philippines’ tourism industry.

NCRPO Chief P/Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar

During a press briefing on the coming Investour Forum sponsored by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) in Taguig City, Gen. Eleazar yesterday shared that tourism has been a major contributor to the gross income of the country and should thus be supported by the police force and has vowed to enhance the NCRPO’s drive against criminality and violence in the National Capital Region (NCR).

“As in all business investment endeavors, peace and order is a pre-requisite to the success of our tourism industry,” Eleazar stressed. “The support towards the tourism industry sectors provided by the police is therefore critical and essential,” he added.

The NCRPO chief noted that one of the most dreaded pronouncements that a country can get is a travel ban which is generated by two factors: the peace and order situation of the area and health concerns in epidemic proportions.

“From our end here in Metro Manila, we have classified special places and festivals as special tourism points, so that we may provide these places and events the necessary emphasis in terms of police service and support,” Eleazar declared.

According to the NCRPO chief, the classified places include places of historical significance such as the Rizal Park and Paco Park. Other areas included in the classification are five-star hotels and casinos, big shopping malls, business circuits and churches with historical significance.

“With a basic strategy of increasing police presence in these areas, we have had a successful and healthy circulation of foreign and domestic tourists, including balikbayans,” Eleazar revealed. “From January to August of this year, the Department of Tourism and our police districts have tallied 38,183,193 tourists here in Metro Manila alone,” he added.

The NCRPO chief attributed the perky tourism industry in Metro Manila to a robust peace and order situation. “Compared to the last three years of the previous administration, the Duterte administration has recorded a 58% decline in the volume of major crimes, such as murder, homicide, rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, carnapping, motornapping, and serious physical injuries.”

He then proceeded to attribute the improved peace-and-order situation to eight factors:
- The government’s successful war on drugs
- The increase in the police force that has boosted police presence
- The role of media in sending a clear message that the police force is doing its job
- The serious internal cleansing instituted in the NCRPO
- New communications technology and the advent of social media
- The increase in the salaries of the police
- The president’s order to implement local ordinances against certain night-time activities
- The NCRPO’s Intensified Cleanliness Policy or ICP.

Gen. Eleazar ended his talk by emphasizing that the NCRPO cannot sit on their laurels. “The quest for the ideal peace and order situation is a never-ending grind for any nation, especially in a developing country like ours,” he stressed.

The press briefing, which was held at the Manila House in Bonifacio Global City, was about the coming “Investour Forum on TIEZA’s Flagship Tourism Enterprise Zones.”

The forum will be held at the Centennial Ballroom of the Manila Hotel, Manila on October 15. The Forum will focus on the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the fiscal and non-fiscal incentives as approved by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and clarify the difference between the 12 Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZs), five Flagship Tourism Enterprise Zones (FTEZs), and thousands of Registered Tourism Enterprises (RTEs).

Scania Fleet Management : Scania allows fleet operators to monitor vehicle and driver performance to help achieve fuel economy

The revolutionary Scania Fleet Management Services was launched last March 9, 2017 held at the Scania Showroom, 1132 EDSA Balintawak, Quezon City.

Scania lets operators take control of their fleet with the revolutionary Fleet Management System. Scania Fleet Management is a set of services that connects the vehicles to one’s office. The service helps identify and use the key details needed such as vehicle data, fuel consumption, fleet position and driver performance (coasting, heavy braking, speeding or idling) that will help increase the productivity of the fleet, achieve fuel economy and eventually reduce the cost of operations. It puts clear and useful information that helps operators better understand how their fleet is performing and what is costing money.

“The good news is all new Scania trucks that are being sold in the country come pre- installed with the Scania Communicator telematics unit. This device regularly collects, saves, sends and receives information for analysis and presentation on the Scania Fleet Management portal or through the Scania Fleet Management app that can be downloaded for free. Operators just need to activate the service in order for them to be able to connect to their fleet’s data,” said Leilani Lim-Tan, Vice President of BJ Mercantile, Inc., the local distributor of Scania.

Scania Fleet Management consists of two different service packages: Monitoring and Control.

Monitoring Package

The Scania Fleet Management Monitoring Package is an easy-to-use service that puts operators on the right track to improving their fleet economy – even for small fleets. They will receive weekly email summaries covering all of their vehicles on vital information such as Fuel Consumption, Carbon Dioxide Emissions and driving behaviors. From these they can see at a glance how each vehicle is performing and which ones need special attention.

They can also access the Scania Fleet Management portal to manage their service planning. Service Planning and Remote Diagnostics provides an overview of all the equipment in the fleet, along with their maintenance plans, including a calendar for keeping track of maintenance and repairs. When a vehicle is scheduled for repair through the FMS portal, parts for replacement can already be prepared in advance thereby reducing downtime. The workshop only uses Scania genuine parts to lessen breakdown risks.

Control Package

The Control Package is an advanced set of services that help fleet owners utilize vehicle and driver follow- ups and operational information to support their transport process. Apart from the benefits of the Monitoring Package, they can also access additional useful information and functions including Driver Evaluation, Vehicle Evaluation, Fuel Report, Events Report, Vehicle Tracking, Fleet Position, Environmental Report and a Messaging Service for quick and easy communication.

Scania Driver Services

A good driving style saves fuel, reduces vehicle wear and helps prevent accidents on the road boosting road safety and reducing vehicle downtime. Scania offers a driver training program to show drivers how to drive more economically and more safely which in turn have a positive impact on profitability and have a significant on reducing emissions. And with the Driver Evaluation function of the Control Package, operators can regularly check on their drivers’ driving style to identify areas of improvement.

The Scania Fleet Management System is already being used by a number of fleet operators in the country.

“The Scania system gives you more in-depth knowledge of your vehicles and driver performance,” said Mr. Benzon Rosete, Managing Director, Best Geo-Carrier.

“The fuel performance per vehicle is very useful to us especially with regards to the handling of the vehicle's transmission, the active detection of vehicle problems/faults, maintenance notifications as well as real-time monitoring of their fuel load and other parameters crucial in a journey. The driver performance data helps us assess driver skills as well as set benchmarks and gauge driver performance across our entire fleet. Scania Driver support is being used together with our Driver Management Team to coach drivers in the way they handle our Scania vehicles,” said Mr. Luigi Teola, Technical Manager, Great Sierra Development Corporation.
