Something BIG is happening at The Big Dome!

Four of the biggest South Korean acts are slated to visit Manila for “Begin Again: KPOP Edition” taking place on May 29, 2022, 5 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Fans are sure to have a blast with NCT DREAM, SHINee’s KEY, WEi, and ALICE performing their latest hit songs on the Philippine stage.

NCT DREAM will be headlining the show, coming on the heels of their widely successful album “Glitch Mode.” Released last March, NCT DREAM has recently wrapped promotions after selling an impressive 2 million albums. This makes them a double million-seller for two consecutive years—a feat only a handful of groups have achieved.

Seemingly a magnet for historic achievements, NCT DREAM is set to tick another one on its checklist. Back in 2020, the group is the last to hold a live concert in the Philippines before COVID-19 lockdown. Now, they’ll be one of the first international artists to perform live again after two years. Needless to say, NCT DREAM is making dreams come true with their return to the country.

Performing alongside the group is labelmate KEY, lead dancer, and lead rapper of SHINee. In 2018, KEY made his solo debut with the single “Forever Yours,” which he quickly followed up with a full studio album titled “Face.” The album peaked at number 5 on Korea’s Gaon Chart and snagged a top 10 entry on the US World Albums Chart.

September last year, KEY released his first mini-album “Bad Love,” which earned him another top entry on the Gaon Chart. The titular track also enjoyed commercial and critical success with its Music Core win and The Ringer naming it the Best KPOP Song of 2021.

WEi, a six-member boy group from OUI Entertainment, is also joining in the fun. Though only debuting 2 years ago, the group is no stranger to the limelight. Members DAE HYEON, DONG HAN, YONG HA, YO HAN, SEOK HWA, and JUN SEO have different charms, and as a fourth-generation youth icon, WEi is loved by domestic and international fans.

In March of this year, the group released their fourth mini-album “Love Pt.1: First Love” with “Too Bad” as the main title. The album sold more than 100,000 copies and placed at number five on Korea’s Gaon Chart.

Last but definitely not the least is ALICE, consisting of members EJ, Do-A, Chaejeong, Yeonjae, Yukyung, Sohee, and Karin. In 2018, the group was named the Best Rookie Group at the 24th Korean Entertainment Arts Awards. Fresh off the May 4 release of their latest single “Power of Love,” these fearsome femmes are ready to wow on the stage.

The 2-hour concert marks the first live KPOP show in the country since the COVID-19 lockdown. Don’t miss this historic event and come see talented artists on one stage.

CHVRCHES HEADLINES THE BIG DOME

Third time’s the charm for Glaswegian synth-pop trio Chvrches as the band returns for their biggest headline show ever in Manila happening on August 13 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum as part of their Love Is Dead 2019 Asia Tour.

Crafting songs with notable synths and edgy hooks, Chvrches combine their roots in Glasgow’s indie community – the group features former members of alternative rock bands with a love of chart-friendly pop. Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty made an immediate impact on the music scene in summer of 2013 with the bittersweet-yet-anthemic debut album The Bones of What You Believe, and later found ways of bringing an extra sheen to their music without sacrificing its depth.

Chvrches’ critically acclaimed third and latest album, Love Is Dead, just marked its first anniversary last May since its release, but it continues to break worldwide streaming records. The band reclaims the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts ruling both rankings for a second time. The trio scored their No. 1 on each tally, following the chart-topping debut of preceding album Every Open Eye, which also opened at No. 1 back in 2015. Tracks Get Out, Miracle, and Graffiti concurrently reign on the Hot Rock Songs chart, which blends streaming, radio airplay, and digital sales. Love Is Dead is Chvrches’ first album to feature outside production, with Greg Kurstin (hitmaker for Adele, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Sia, Foo Fighters) having produced a total of nine songs. When Chvrches began creating the record, they only had one definite plan. “We wanted to sound more like a live band,” recalls Iain Cook. “We’ve always felt like a rock band and all three of us have long histories in rock, so it was inevitable we’d eventually turn in that direction.”

Over the past eight years, Chvrches has built a loyal fan base and landed on a handful of high-profile festival gigs with their catchy synth-pop tunes. However, the group just recently notched their biggest career milestone yet with their new Marshmello collaboration, Here With Me. The blockbuster single rose to the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, earning Chvrches their first ever entry to the Hot 100 list. It also debuted at No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales and has charted on Dance/Mix Show Airplay for three consecutive weeks.

Chvrches is more than thrilled to incorporate all their classic hits with brand new singles on this much-anticipated global tour. Indeed, the Scottish pop band is experienced at finding balance between fresh songs that are exciting to play and old favorites that the crowd demands for. Chvrches lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry says, “We go to enough shows ourselves and watch bands we like to what's a good mix. You have to be aware that yes, it's a creative process for you, but you're there because people love those songs. Just give the people what they want."

Other Chvrches hits include The Mother We Share, Gun, My Enemy, Never Say Die, Leave A Trace, Recover, among many others.

Chvrches’ Love Is Dead 2019 Asia Tour live in Manila is presented by Ovation Productions in cooperation with TAP Sports and FOXlife. Ticket prices are P5,810/ 4,760/ 3,700/ 2,640 available via www.ticketnet.com.phand TicketNet outlets. The Florida-based band was formed in 2004, and in 2007 they started posting videos on YouTube sharing not only their original songs, but also their distinctive acoustic covers with the world. All is set for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) on ABS-CBN Sports +Action premiere on January 25

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), a new regional-concept basketball league which is a brainchild of Senator Manny Pacquiao, opens its first season this Thursday, January 25 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, and will be shown live on ABS-CBN Sports + Action.

MPBL gives fresh and undiscovered Filipino basketball talents from local communities and former collegiate and professional players their chance to shine on national TV.

“This will support the youth who are interested in the sports. This will be great help to them. From the grassroots, we are going to discover good players. “Hindi naman kami nakikipag compete sa ibang liga, kundi ito ay ambag, tulong din sa pag-promote ng basketball dito sa Pilipinas. It’s possible that players who shine in the MPBL will eventually get the opportunity to be drafted by other leagues so it could be complementary,” Pacquiao said.

Arnold Vegafria
Arnold Vegafria, AVL Events International Chairman, happens to be the business manager of Manny Pacquiao and now the overall head of production and marketing of MPBL says,
"Through Senator Manny Pacquiao's vision, we have a basketball league that truly reaches the grassroots level. Finally, Filipinos from all walks of life who have the talent and passion for the game will be able to show their mettle in the hardcourt. We are thankful for I hope advertisers and basketball fans will support this. This is another platform where Filipinos can find their potential basketball heroes."
Dino Laurena, Abs-Cbn Sports head expressed his excitement with the entry of the MPBL S+A, which aims to give grassroots athletes and undrafted or untapped basketball players a venue to showcase their skills and continue to pursue their basketball dreams.

“It was very natural for us to get together because of our shared vision for Philippines sports and our desire to support Filipino athletes in the grassroots level. Serendipitously, we are celebrating the anniversary of the MBA (Metropolitan Basketball Association) this year, which had the same concept and objective,” he said.

All games in the MPBL will feature a home-and-away format similar to the old Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA). Similar to the MBA, the MPBL features teams that represent a province, city, or municipality in the country and has a home and away format that will give the teams a chance to play in their home court in front of their fans. Currently, the league has 10 teams from Metro Manila and Luzon, and will eventually expand to include teams from Visayas and Mindanao.

This first MPBL season, ten teams will compete in the maiden conference of the league, namely Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Caloocan, Imus, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Quezon City, and Valenzuela.

They will compete in a single-round robin elimination round with each team hosting at least two home games in their respective arenas.

Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) heads during  media  conference, Annabel's Restaurant, January 22.

Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes also said that each team is required to have at least three players that are truly homegrown to the area.

“The advantage of this is really the pride of the players playing for their respective provinces and cities. We also believe that it will be more exciting because of the support of the fans for their teams. In the preseason, we can really see that they are excited as they also want to see their home players succeed,” he adds

“We would like to thank Sports and Action and ABS-CBN for this. There's a lot of talent na mabibigyan ng chance,” Commissioner Duremdes said.

MPBL team coordinator Emmerson Oreta, a former professional player like Duremdes, added that their long-term goal is to have all teams featuring all homegrown players, like their preseason champion, the Bulacan Kuyas.

Helping Duremdes and Oreta in running the league is another former professional and national team player Zaldy Realubit, who heads the operations, and assistant commissioner Satar Macantal, Pacquiao’s childhood friend who played for Pacquiao’s local team and helped him organize basketball leagues in their hometown of General Santos City.

To further encourage fans to watch the opening at the Araneta Coliseum, Vegafria said they will be giving away one car and ten motorbikes on January 25.

Don’t miss the premiere of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League on January 25 live from the SMART Araneta Colisuem on ABS-CBN S+A and S+A HD.

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League telecast is a production of AVL Events International and ABS-CBN Sports + Action.

Catch the games every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7 pm to 11 pm. Watch online via iwantv.com.ph or skyondemand.com.ph. For news and updates, visit sports.abs-cbn.com or follow @abscbnsports on Facebook and Twitter.

Find Araneta Center’s best deals with Piip

Piip, the go-to mobile application for the best location-based promos and deals, officially launched its partnership with the Araneta Center at the annual tree-lighting ceremony recently held at the Times Square Food Park along Time Square Avenue, Araneta Center, Quezon City.

Launched in the Philippines last February, Piip is a mobile application that grants users access to a wide variety of product discounts and recommendations at the Piip of a button. Adding to the app’s algorithm for unique deal selection, Piip’s location-based feature helps shoppers find the nearest store where the products and services they need are available and even made more affordable. Piip also enables users of the app to directly contact their merchant of choice via its in-app messenger, making it easy for both to communicate and transact.

“We at Piip are committed to giving consumers the best promos and deals to help them with their shopping even after the holiday season is over. Our partnership with the Araneta Center is the prime opportunity for merchants to bring their businesses into the digital platform,” said Narciso Reyes, Spokesperson for Piip.

This partnership with Piip provides Araneta Center and its wide portfolio of merchants an opportunity to offer new tech platform as they venture deeper into the digital space. With more shoppers going in and out of malls, including the Araneta Center, Piip is the perfect channel for merchants to fully showcase their promos especially now that consumers are always online. Not only that, merchants also have an opportunity to curate personalized deals when they transact with consumers using Piip’s messaging feature.

“Araneta Center has always been on the lookout for opportunities where we can drive more visibility for our merchants. With the rapid growth of technology coupled with a young and vibrant customer base, we believe that Piip provides an avenue to bring the retail experience within our development further into the digital future and that this collaboration will help us better engage with our patrons,” said John Castelo, Senior Vice President.

Watch out for more updates soon available at Piip.

Incubus in Post-Valentines Manila Concert

The much loved American rock band Incubus, whose return engagement to Manila has been eagerly awaited is performing February 17, 2018, Saturday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The band is known for its rock anthems Wish You Were Here, Megalomaniac, Anna Molly, Drive, Pardon Me, Are You In?, Nice To Know You, among others.

The concert is produced by Ovation Productions, the group that also did Incubus’ previous concerts in Manila; the last was in 2015.

Since their formation in 1991, iconic multiplatinum Los Angeles rock band Incubus have consciously and continually shifted their perspective with each subsequent album, preserving the spirit that initially drove them and simultaneously challenging themselves as artists and human beings. Their eighth full-length, the aptly titled 8 [Island Records], proudly upholds that tradition for the quintet—Brandon Boyd [vocals], Mike Einziger [guitar, piano, backing vocals], José Pasillas II [drums], Chris Kilmore [turntables, keyboards], and Ben Kenney [bass].

“As a band, we’re collectively interested in challenging ourselves and hopefully finding new, innovative ways of writing music,” asserts Boyd. “That ethos has kept things interesting for us.”

In the fall of 2016, the five musicians regrouped to flesh out ideas, recording at Jim Henson Studios and at Einziger’s personal studio. As the vision came into focus during early 2017, Incubus added another level by enlisting the perspective of longtime friend Skrillex [Justin Bieber, A$AP Rocky, Lady Gaga] for co-production and mixing. Einziger had spent the past few years, exponentially expanding his personal musical palette. Not only did he oversee production for The Internet’s Feel Good and produce three songs for Tyler, The Creator’s chart-topping “Cherry Bomb,” but he also co-wrote Avicii’s six-times platinum smash “Wake Me Up” and served as musical director and performer for a much talked-about 2016 GRAMMY® Awards performance of “Where Are Ãœ Now” by Skrillex, Diplo, and Justin Bieber. After lunch one day, Einziger played Skrillex some mixes, and “a whole new world opened up” as the producer added his magic to 8.

“It evolved organically out of my friendship with Skrillex,” Einziger elaborates. “Incubus is all about friendship. We transferred the synergy of working together into what the band was doing. As we put the final touches on everything, Skrillex brought another level to the album.”

As a result, the eleven tracks comprising 8 assemble a mosaic reflective of the band’s current mindset. Unease translates to unpredictable guitar riffs that blur the lines between time signatures as cosmic rhythmic transmissions orbit around an epicenter of combustible emotion. Each lyric encodes a parable or what might be a hidden message. The first single “Nimble Bastard” leapfrogs from a rattling guitar snap into an anthemic refrain. “Loneliest” echoes with an existential rumination on solitude over an airy beat and hypnotic guitars. “Undefeated” struts along via a bombastic stomp before culminating on an uplifting chant, while the spacey “Familiar Faces” instantly enchants.

The soothing instrumental soundscape of “Make No Sound In The Digital Forest” illuminates their cinematic side with delicate chimes, simmering drums, and warbling tones. A dial-up modem signals the explosion of “Love In A Time of Surveillance” as the one-two punch of “No Fun” and “Throw Out The Map” tap into a tsunami of distortion and punk-y freedom. “Glitterbomb” represents the glorious push-and-pull of 8, teetering between heavenly harmony and a dramatic twinge.

8 arrives at a significant milestone for Incubus—releasing exactly 20 years since their major label debut S.C.I.E.N.C.E. landed back in 1997. A little older, a lot wiser, quite tighter, but equally ready to challenge themselves and rock music at large, Incubus change their perspective once more in 2017.

“All the time, I hear from fans that our music was the backdrop of their first experience with love or important in getting them through a hard time,” says Einziger. “That’s the highest compliment.”

“When we finished 8, we were flooded with this wave of gratitude,” Boyd leaves off. “The fact that so many people are willing to come on this weird ride with us is really humbling. We’re filled with this sense of awe around it. We’re very happy to share this record with everyone, and we hope they like it.”

(Tickets to Incubus’ February 17, 2018 concert will go on sale starting November 21, 2017 via www.ticketnet.ph and regular Ticketnet outlets or call 911-5555. Ticket prices are P6905, 5905, 3905, 1905, 1005 plus service charge. Media partners are FOXlife, Monster RX 93.1, Philippine Star, and Business Mirror. Produced by Ovation Productions )

“Throwback Thursday’ on April 27 at the Big Dome

An interesting mix of soft rock and R&B classics shall take music fans on a nostalgic trip back to the ‘80s as three noted foreign acts get together in a retro concert in April that will showcase some of the era’s best in popular music.

For the first time ever, singer-songwriter El DeBarge, disco diva and vocalist Sybil and band Kalapana from Hawaii will appear on the same stage on April 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City to perform their greatest hits that have endeared to millions of Filipinos.

Ovation Productions is presenting the three foreign artists together in what is dubbed “Throwback Thursday” as it’s summer offering. Also featured is popular Pinoy band Passage.

Known for his signature falsetto, El DeBarge was the focal point and lead singer of the American family group DeBarge from the early to mid-‘80s. The group’s hits include “Time Will Reveal, “Stay With Me,” “All This Love”, “Rhythm of the Night”, “Starlight Express”, and “Who’s Holding Donna Now”, among others.

After leaving the group in 1985, he launched his solo career the following year with a self-titled debut album that contained the Number Three hit, “Who’s Johnny?,” which was featured in the film, “Short Circuit.”

Sybil Anita Lynch, known simply to music fans as Sybil, on the other hand, attained success as an R&B pop singer and songwriter during the mid-80s until the mid-90s.

Recognized as an excellent vocalist and one of the finest among disco divas, the American artist from New Jersey began recording in 1986 with the release of her debut single, “Falling in Love,” which reached the Top 30 on the R&B and Dance charts, and which opened the door to her successful career through the release of her debut album, “Let Yourself Go.” a year later.

She scored huge crossover hits in the Philippines with her song “Make It Easy On Me” and her cover versions of Dionne Warwick’s “Don’t Make Me Over” in 1989 and “Walk On By” in 1990.

She attained her most successful hit in the United Kingdom with a cover of |The Love I Lost,” which peaked at No.3, while its follow up, “When I’m Good and Ready,” peaked at No. 5.

In 1997, Sybil released her greatest hits album, followed later that year by her last album to-date, “Still A Friend.”

The contemporary Hawaiian group, Kalapana, which is now on its 44th year in the music and entertainment industry, gained fame for its pop and soft rock music that have made its songs, such as “Night Bird”, “Naturally” and “The Hurt,” enduring island classics.

Kalapana made a successful breakthrough in the international touring circuit when it performed with the LA-based fusion band Hiroshima, played at the grand opening of Hard Rock Café in Honolulu and performed in two-sold out shows in the Philippines with an attendance of 10,000 each night.

It also did extensive tours in Japan, US West Coast, Tahiti, Samoa, Guam, Saipan and other Pacific islands.

Its successful tour in Japan with Michael Paulo of Al Jarreau’s band and Tris Imboden (drummer for Chicago) boosted Kalapana’s popularity in that country, where it has one of its largest fan bases since the 1970s, and landed it a five-album deal with Pony Canyon Records.

In 2011, Kalapana received the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Achievement Award. \The recipients were Malani Bilyyeu, Mackey Feary (posthumously, John (DJ) Pratt, Kirk Thompson, Alvin Fejarang, Michael Paulo, Randy Aloya, Gaylord Holomalia and Kenji Sano.

Kalapana was last seen in the Philippines in 2012 when it had a three-night, three-city concert tour with folk rock band America produced by Ovation Productions. -- #
