MVPs, more standouts boost PLDT High Speed Hitters for ‘strongest’ PVL lineup yet

Offense, defense, and strategy all covered as the likes of Kim Kianna Dy, Majoy Baron, Kim Fajardo, Savannah Davison, and newly hailed skipper Kath Arado aim to win 1st first PVL title

PLDT High Speed Hitters - Majoy Baron, Kim Fajardo, Kim Kianna Dy

With three former MVPs on board, a Filipino-Canadian scoring machine as a sophomore, and a pool of reliable standouts as holdovers, expect a far more powerful PLDT High Speed Hitters team at the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference. Ahead of the league’s opening on February 20, all eyes are on the volleyball team supported by PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, as it faces 11 other participants, kicking off the biggest Philippine volleyball action this 2024.

Headlining the team are the terrific trio of Kianna Dy (UAAP Season 78 Finals MVP, 2021 PNVF Champions League MVP and Best Opposite Hitter), Majoy Baron (UAAP Season 79 MVP, 2023 PVL Invitational Conference 1st Best Middle Blocker), and Kim Fajardo (3-time UAAP Best Setter, UAAP Beach Volleyball MVP, 6-time Philippine Super Liga Best Setter).

All once part of the national team, they came to prominence during their collegiate days with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers. They each carry three UAAP gold medals, among other silver finishes and individual awards.

After finishing as PVL’s top scorer in her rookie year in the last conference, Savannah Davison is seen as a credible threat on the court. She contributed 202 points through 173 attacks, 22 blocks, and seven service aces at the end of the eliminations.

Davison competed at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 and national competition levels in the US, while completing her biochemistry degree at the New Mexico State University and MBA at University of Oklahoma Gene Rainbolt Graduate School of Business.

Meanwhile, three-time PVL Best Libero Kath Arado takes on a new role of captain, as she mans the team’s backcourt defense with her precision and agility. Also a multi-awarded UAAP libero, she leads a lineup of veterans and former national team players including 2022 PVL Invitational Conference Best Middle Blockers Mika Reyes and Dell Palomata and UAAP champions Rhea Dimaculangan and Jules Samonte. Erika Santos, Fiola Ceballos, Jessey de Leon, Jovelyn Prado, Rachel Austero, Iza Viray, and Far Eastern University standouts Kiesha Bedonia and Sheila Kiseo complete the roster.

“We are excited to see volleyball court action resume this February. As always, we are here to support the PLDT High Speed Hitters in this new season. “The goal is to have as many Filipino volleyball athletes as possible representing us in international events—and maybe even the Olympics. We will continue to work with partner leagues and organizations to help make this possible. Of course, the work begins with our team. They make us very proud, and we hope they continue to play their hearts out on the court,” Pangilinan said.

The team also had the chance to meet, interact, and play games with PLDT and Smart employees to promote the upcoming season.

Outside the court, the UP Maroons are doting dog dads

The joy of coming home to a happy dog is irreplaceable. Good or bad day, your dogs will always welcome you at the door with excitement and unbridled happiness to see you. Once you settle down, they’ll be ready to chill and play with you. This is what some players of the UP Maroons feel whenever they come home from training and big game days.

Many sports fans tune in to UAAP Basketball to watch the UP Maroons dominate their games. During Season 84, the UP team clinched the championship, which was celebrated by students and alumni around the country. They continued their dominant streak this year as they reached the finals once again. Although the UP Maroons placed second, they still showed their fire and determination to win.

When they’re not playing their hearts out on the court, the UP Maroons are doting pet dads as they spend their free time with their dogs.

Maroon’s best friend

CJ Casino with his fur baby, Milo

For UP Maroons team captain CJ Cansino, walking and playing with his Corgi, Milo, re-energizes him whenever he’s back home in Laguna. “I make sure na ako nag-aalaga sa kanya, ako nag-iikot sa kanya, ako nagpapakain sa kanya,” he says.

UP Maroon’s Aldous Torculas with his fur baby

When Aldous Torculas got his American Bulldog, Zion, during the pandemic, he spent a lot of time with him to feel relaxed. “Best memory ko yung nakuha ko si Zion nung pandemic. Tuwang-tuwa ako everytime na gigising ako, siya agad yung pinupuntahan ko,” he says.

Loyal family members

More than anything, dogs are important members of the family. They are like children and siblings you take good care of, even spoiling them with yummy food and cute toys. At the same time, they repay the love you give with loyalty and companionship.

UAAP Season 85 MVP Malick Diouf with his pet

UAAP Season 85 MVP Malick Diouf considers his two dogs, Emma and Bellie, as great company. They’re always there for him whenever he feels down, so he can count on them whenever he needs a pick-me-up.
Sean Alter spending time with his fur baby

Meanwhile, Fil-Am player Sean Alter shares that he can’t wait to see his dog Wicky when he goes home to the US. The small white Maltese-Poodle is “always happy” to see Sean, and always cuddles with him. “It’s a lot of responsibility to take care of a dog, but having [a dog] to cuddle when you are feeling lonely or down, it’s the best feeling,” he says.

Whether they’re living with their dogs or living away from them, the UP Maroons always make sure that they invest time and effort for their furbabies. They may not be around all the time because of their grueling schedules, but they know what’s best for them, such as giving them nutrient-rich TopBreed dog food to enjoy every day.

Every athlete, including the UP Maroons, has a strong commitment to their sport. But amid photos and clips of basketball highlights, the UP Maroons aren’t scared to show their compassionate side with their beloved dogs. Regardless if they win or lose games, their dogs and loved ones will always be there to welcome them home.

World Champions, Marc & Alex Marquez, Balance Over 200 Bamboo Baskets in Scooter Competition Ahead of Thailand MotoGP

Thailand, October 25, 2023 – Modest scooters adorned with towering stacks behind! No, it's not the bustling streets of Thailand, but a riveting scooter race between 8-time MotoGP world Champion, Marc Marquez, and his Moto2 world Champion brother, Alex Marquez, as they weave through the quiet, grassy dirt tracks of Buriram. In this eccentric pre-Grand Prix challenge, the brothers pitted their skills against each other, turning the competition into a spectacle that showcased their balance and competitiveness.

Sean Chen / Red Bull Content Pool

In the first sprint of the scooter race, Alex and Marc faced the challenge of maneuvering 17 bags filled with Thai silk, weighing over 150kg and stretching over 4-meters wide, leading to a collision at the first roundabout. A wide final turn by Alex resulted in a ditch encounter, enabling Marc to cross the finish line first.

In the subsequent race, Marc and Alex navigated a course with over 200 Thai bamboo baskets stacked almost 7-meters tall. Marc took the lead until his baskets snagged an adjacent tree on the final straight, which allowed Alex to secure a last-minute win.

Marc and Alex’s pre-race scooter competition not only offered a glimpse into the local Thai culture but also fostered a playful camaraderie as they geared up for the upcoming Grand Prix in Buriram this weekend.

“To ride the loaded scooter was a bit strange because when you’re turning, especially when you hit some bumps, the scooter was moving super heavy in a very aggressive way. When I see all the scooters in Bangkok and in Buriram, even tuk tuks, I say this must be difficult, especially in the middle of traffic. And I appreciate it a lot because they [local riders] have really good skills,” shares Marc Marquez with a laugh.

Alex Marquez shared similar sentiments, stating "What I enjoyed most was the race against Marc with the cones. We touched a few times, but it was really nice. Difficult to manage, but really fun!”

New Team, New Challenge

The mini competition, potentially foreshadowing what's to come, took place during the aftermath of Marc Marquez’s announcement to join a new team next year. In a strategic move that has sent shockwaves through the racing community, Marc and Alex will join forces at the Gresini Ducati team in 2024, setting the stage for a narrative of brotherly teamwork and competitive spirit.

“It will be a very nice challenge next year competing with another manufacturer and another team, but especially with and against my brother," Marc Marquez shares.

Despite the whirlwind of recent changes in Marc's career, the vibe was undeniably electric, a sentiment that is expected to resonate to the actual race event this weekend. Marc is geared up to close out the remaining 2023 season on a high note. An outpouring of excitement has marked Marc’s return to Thailand as he is thrilled to reconnect with the passionate Thai fans once again.

"It’s super nice to be back in Thailand because I have very good memories. My last championship was here in Thailand, Buriram in 2019. Always, I’ve had a very good connection with the Thai fans. I like them because they are very passionate," states Marc.

Red Bull Energy Zone

Fans are invited to visit the exclusive Red Bull Energy Zone throughout the race weekend to further immerse themselves in the racing atmosphere. In addition to exclusive meet-and-greet sessions with Red Bull’s riders, attendees can partake in various on-ground activities for a chance to win official Red Bull KTM Factory Racing merchandise. The top scorers will earn an exclusive tour of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing garage and will be hosted in their hospitality area on Sunday.

And, for those interested in delving deeper into Marc’s perseverance and journey in the racing world, the MotoGP docu-series 'Marc Marquez: ALL IN' presents a unique opportunity. It showcases pivotal moments in his Honda career, from challenging times like his 2011 crash in Malaysia that caused diplopia and required surgery, and his 2020 MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix crash resulting in a fractured humerus, to major milestones like his 100th podium finish.

Fans can immerse themselves in Marc's relentless pursuit of triumph over adversity, exploring a captivating journey through a champion's path to recovery and his determined resolve to return to the track even stronger. Stream it FREE today on Red Bull TV.

Triathlon Triumphs: Mervin Santiago's Journey Beyond Racetracks

Embarking on a journey that transcends boundaries, Mervin Santiago's triumph in the IRONMAN World Championship becomes a beacon of inspiration for athletes globally.

Competing in Nice, France, while proudly carrying Philippine flag, was no small feat for Mervin Rencel Santiago, a member of the Santé Barley Tri-Team, who recently celebrated as the fastest Filipino finisher in the IRONMAN World Championship.

This achievement marked a challenging balance between life, career, and a fervent passion for sports. Yet, Santiago's unwavering determination rendered him unstoppable, propelling him to new heights both personally and for the local triathlon scene. Here, he shares his story beyond the finish line.

More than passion: a lifestyle. Known for his love of sports, Santiago's journey into triathlons is more of a lifestyle than aiming to win. Beyond being a triathlete, he serves as a fitness coach and bike fitter. Sports seamlessly integrated into his career, hobby, and passion, making the disciplined training for triathlons a natural extension of his routine.

"Some train solely for competition, but my goal is to stay healthy. Beyond IRONMAN training, it has become my regular workout routine so, naturally, it became part of my lifestyle. Honestly, even without competition, I would still follow this vigorous training," Santiago shared.

His dedication hasn't gone unnoticed by fellow Santé Barley Tri-Team members, including Santé CEO Joey Marcelo and Santé Barley Tri-Team Captain Jonah Rivera. Santiago's commitment to training, even at unconventional hours, is a quality admired by the team.

"It's rare to find a triathlete so passionate that sport becomes his reason for being. Sometimes you would catch him training even at night, and that is why he continues to achieve great feats in the triathlon scene," Marcelo remarked.

Despite the demanding schedule, Santiago maintains a well-balanced life. As a family man, he finds time to take breaks and bond with his loved ones, a sentiment emphasized by Rivera, acknowledging the challenge of balancing family life with the demands of being a triathlete.

The role of nutrition and health. Everything that transpired during the competition exceeded Santiago's expectations—a sentiment he emphasized when recalling his thoughts at the finish line. While he aimed to perform at his best because he carries the pride of Filipinos on his shoulders, Santiago's primary goal was to surpass his personal record.

"One thing about always aiming to be the best in competitions is it overshadows your true purpose—to grow and be better for yourself. My focus that day was to beat my own PR (Personal Record), with other achievements as a bonus," Santiago emphasized.

For Santiago, triathlons are a constant battle to maintain overall health. Losing focus before, during, or after the race was never an option. Ensuring a healthy body, mind, and soul became paramount, with Santé playing a vital role.

"Nutrition is crucial in endurance sports. Even with physical strength, without proper nutrition, it's futile. Santé's products provided the nutrition and supplements I needed to stay at the top of my game, allowing me to push my limits and achieve my goals," Santiago added.

Marcelo echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that the rigorous process of preparing for a triathlon necessitates a healthy companion. In a race involving three sports—biking, swimming, and running—a healthy support system is essential, one Santiago found with Santé and in Marcelo, Rivera, and the rest of the Santé Barley Tri-Team.

"The Santé Barley Tri-team started because we all share the same passion for the sport. This has become our bond and support system, strengthening camaraderie both as a team and as friends," Rivera said.

Shaping the future of triathlons in the country. Winning as the fastest Filipino finisher in this year’s IRONMAN World Championship is like claiming a gold medal in the Olympics, as described by Marcelo. It's more than bringing home the trophy; it serves as a reminder to support Filipino athletes in sports.

Santiago shares this sentiment, viewing the competition as an opportunity to inspire people to explore sports for both lifestyle improvement and a potential career. "Of course, I will continue exploring the world stage and be the best version of myself. My journey as a triathlete continues, as does my mission to empower people to live more, do more," Santiago added.

The Santé Barley Tri-Team is poised to expand its reach, with plans to create a team for kids and teens. Their goal is to train them either for the Santé Barley Tri-team’s professional team or the Philippine National Triathlon Team. Regardless of the direction, Rivera hopes Santiago's feat inspires people to engage in sports and exercise.

"All it takes is that very first step. That single step is enough to change your life because sports and exercising are good starting points to instill discipline and productivity," Rivera shared.

Perhaps, Santiago's story beyond the finish line will transcend racetracks and initiate a healthier change not just in the Philippines but across the globe.

With its mission to help people live better lives, Santé promotes, produces, and distributes natural health and wellness products and services. As the leading barley brand, Santé consistently delivers top-quality products to its loyal customers globally, solidifying its position as the barley authority.

Gatorade Proud to Fuel FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Milestones

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 concludes with Europe as the new powerhouse in the biggest sports spectacle anticipated by more than 12,000 fans. Gatorade, the World’s No. 1 Sports Drink in the World, congratulates Germany for it sweeping campaign, capped off by an 83-77 triumph over Serbia at the finals match.

As the official sports drink of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Gatorade joins FIBA in bringing the biggest hoop spectacle to life. Hosted in not one but three countries for the first time, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 set multiple milestones – including the most-attended FIBA game held at the Philippine Arena on August 25 with a record-breaking crowd of 38,115. This even surpassed the 32,616 previously set in the 1994 games when Team USA defeated Russia, 137-91, for the gold medal.

Manila co-hosted the event with Okinawa and Jakarta wherein the latter posted a new mark in attendance during the group stage matches – a total of 111,000 spectators from August 25 to September 3 held at the newly built Indonesia Arena Stadium. It was the highest ever achieved in Indonesian basketball, according to Indonesian State-Owned Enterprise Minister Erick Thohir.

Basketball is life for many Filipino fans which is why Gatorade was present both on and off the court. Only the Number 1 Sports Drink can bring fans closer to the action with halftime segments, namely the 3-Point Shootout and the Gatorade No Sugar Fit-O-Meter. Gatorade also surprised fans queuing for snacks outside the court with a Gatorade shooting game and a Gatorade No Sugar bike challenge. For those who couldn’t watch the games in person, Gatorade partnered up with supermarkets, gearing the fans with sports bottle and ticket raffles.

This made for a truly unforgettable basketball experience here in the Philippines, as it brought together fans and supporters from all over the world to our very own homecourt. All teams that qualified to the quarterfinals and the classification stage matches were welcomed by basketball obsessed Filipinos - truly a one-of-a-kind event where world-class basketball talents were on full display. Even after Gilas Pilpinas ended its campaign with a morale-boosting 96-75 triumph over China on September 2, Filipino fans showed tremendous love for the game, played passionately by all teams.

Team USA was a treat for the fans, composed by an all-star NBA squad with champion coaches, Steve Kerr and Erik Spoelstra. Notable players included Austin Reaves and Anthony Edwards. NBA stars playing for their home countries, Luka Dončić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, were highly anticipated by fans. However, Germany and Serbian players dominated the courts – leading to a European showdown.

“Even if nobody asked me, but I’m going to say it, I really appreciate it. It was so amazing. So many fans (here) support me,” said Doncic, the star player of the Dallas Mavericks said even after watching his team got beaten by Canada during the quarterfinal match.

Pinoy fans also gave their support to the other teams like Canada led by Dillon Brooks, Serbia bannered by Bogdan Bogdanovic and Germany spearheaded by Dennis Schroder. In between these milestones, world-class performance and sportsmanship were showcased by basketball players and sports enthusiasts – all fueled by Gatorade, the World’s No. 1 Sports Drink.

Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Dennis Schroder led their country’s team to its first ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title.

As the official sports drink, Gatorade celebrates the glory of basketball – the world class performance of the players and the love for the game of every basketball aficionado.

How Gatorade, the official electrolyte drink of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, becomes a part of athletes’ winning legacy

Dwight Ramos has powered through rigorous training sessions and tune up games against select teams from Europe, as well as the Ukraine U-21 team in Estonia and Lithuania.

This Gilas Pilipinas key player refuses to be slowed down by injury — and a big part of injury prevention is proper exercise and hydration. By fueling up and replenishing electrolytes lost during games and practice, Ramos doesn’t miss out on any session in between flights from Manila to China for tune up games.
Now in the final stages of Gilas’ prep behind closed doors, Ramos can go the extra mile with Gatorade, the official electrolyte partner of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Staying hydrated is the key to longevity - proven quite a number of times by another key player for Gilas and resident import of Barangay Ginebra - Justin Brownlee - who had to learn this lesson the hard way.

Amidst uncomfortable playing conditions in the Cambodia Southeast Asian Games earlier this year, Brownlee battled with cramps and had to miss a crucial part of the match due to fluid loss.

“His legs were cramping up due to the heat and exhaustion,” said Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes when the Philippines lost 68-79 to host team Cambodia in a match played under 41-degree weather.

However, the six-time PBA champion bounced back stronger and more determined than ever to lead Gilas in their redemption tour, bringing the SEA Games gold medal within reach.

After all, in every 40-minute, high stakes game, players need to give their all while battling fatigue and exhaustion. That’s why Gatorade, the official electrolyte drink of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, plays a valuable role in the biggest basketball stage.

Players need to keep rehydrating with the necessary fluids and replacing lost electrolytes to keep them playing longer and the Gatorade formula has been proven to do just that by scientists, nutritionists, and world class athletes for more than 50 years.

With qualifying teams all over the world coming to the Philippines, the tournament can expect the world’s number 1 sports drink to keep world class players fueled up for every match.

To date, other countries have completed their lineup, while the Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff will finalize the final national roster after a round of friendly games with other participating countries.
Among those expected to play are Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic (Slovenia), Denver Nuggets’ Jamal Murray (Canada), Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada), Utah Jazz's Lauri Markkanen (Finland), Chicago Bulls' Nikola Vucevic (Montenegro) and Gatorade’s own ambassador from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl Anthony Towns (Dominican Republic).

Representing the Philippines, Utah Jazz’s Jordan Clarkson will don the Gilas blue jersey, rallying the country’s best athletes towards victory

With these basketball superstars on the stage, Gatorade is sure to make history one bottle and one game at a time.
