Tennis Legend Roger Federer and Leading Fashion Designer JW ANDERSON Jointly Create a New Style of LifeWear

Global apparel retailer UNIQLO announces the launch of the new Roger Federer collection by JW ANDERSON, a collaboration line between UNIQLO Global Brand Ambassador Roger Federer and JW ANDERSON

Combining Roger's classic style with JW ANDERSON's modern and colorful rendition of sports and performance wear. The collection, aimed at those who lead an active and comfortable life seamlessly between sports and the everyday, will be available in the Philippines starting Monday, September 11, 2023.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be launching our new collection designed jointly by Roger Federer and JW ANDERSON. A new style of LifeWear was created by combining the unique talents of a tennis legend and a fashion leader,” said Koji Yanai, Fast Retailing Senior Executive Officer and Head of UNIQLO Global Marketing including Sports. “While developing his tennis wear, we often exchanged opinions with Roger about how it could be worn and enjoyed both On and Off the Court. With this in mind, we immediately thought of JW ANDERSON because he has a deep understanding of sports and performance wear. I am confident that everyone will find something in the new collection that suits their individual daily style.”

Roger Federer commented, “I’ve always wanted to have a collection perfect for playing tennis while also versatile for the other parts of daily life. I’m fortunate that Jonathan shared this vision. Together, we were able to create a stylish and comfortable line rooted in a classic tennis style. Jonathan is talented, creative, and incredibly down-to-earth. It has been a pleasure to work with him on this collection.”

Jonathan Anderson said, “When I was first approached about creating a collection with Roger, I remember being very happy and excited. That’s because I was so influenced by watching Roger play. Thinking a lot about what LifeWear means for all the different people who look up to Roger, we designed a collection that could be worn in an actual match, for a classic look, or just as easily be worn around town. We’ve got something that feels elevated, and it is kind of timeless.”

Collection Overview

Along with polo shirts and shorts in the UNIQLO DRY EX material, the collection, which was created through constant dialogue with Jonathan Anderson, includes many genderless items such as nylon easy pants with piping down the sides as color accents, a striking premium lambswool crewneck sweater with bold colors and knitted, and a fleece full zip jacket accented with a breast pocket in a different material.

Alex Eala victorious in singles and doubles action of J1 Roehampton in London

Alex Eala’s build-up towards Wimbledon is off to a roaring start as the Filipina tennis star beat Darja Vidmanova of Czech Republic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the J1 Roehampton tournament on Thursday morning (Philippine time) in London.

The 16-year old tennis sensation and long-time Globe ambassador is looking to conquer Wimbledon and win her third grand slam tournament in her young but decorated career. But first, she is looking to gain some more experience playing on grass and is using this International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade 1 tournament to further sharpen her skills heading to the 2021 Wimbledon tournament, which starts on Monday, July 5, 2021.

The no. 3 ranked juniors player in the world had no trouble disposing of the 18-year old Vidmanova, who is currently ranked no. 35 in the ITF juniors rankings.

Eala’s next opponent will be Matilde Paoletti of Italy.

Meanwhile, Eala was also victorious in the doubles tournament as she and 18-year old Indonesian Priska Madelyn Nugroho slipped past Nicole Rivkin of Germany and Hanne Vandewinkel of Belgium, 7-6, 7-5. The Eala-Nugroho tandem has had tremendous success in the past, winning the Australian Open girls’ doubles title back in 2020.

Eala and Nugroho’s opponent in the next round will be the pair of Barbora Palicova of the Czech Republic and Radka Zelnickova of Slovakia.

Stakeholders unite to boost Philippine tennis

Randy Villanueva, acting PhilTA President organized the Philippine Tennis Summit and gathers key stakeholders in effort to make a world class tennis association for the Philippines. Organizers, sponsors and regional tennis officials attended the recent Philippine Tennis Summit where they all agreed to reorganize the sport that has been in doldrums for several years.

The Philippine Tennis Summit aims to discuss the present state of the industry and identified action plans towards its improvement and to Promoting reform in Philippine tennis.

Held at Makati Sports Club last September 6, stakeholders, including tennis coaches, players, parents, sponsors, regional representatives and PhilTA officials, among others, along with members of the media issues on Philippine tennis were brought forth.

Villanueva presented the current state of Philippine tennis, citing the need to improve the country’s standing in international competitions, increase the number of tennis players in the country, and attract them to become members of the national tennis association that represents the International Tennis Federation in the Philippines, among others.

Villanueva laid down the plans for Philippine tennis, identifying a strategy that starts with changes within the existing organization, followed by milestones that will create funding and resources, enable extensive training programs, and make way for a consistent supply of high-caliber Filipino tennis players before reaching the ultimate goal of becoming a world-class tennis association.

To consider the vision of becoming a world-class tennis association, Villanueva said that the country should have at least two Olympians, at least two players in the top 100 of the ATP & WTA rankings, four junior players in the Top 100 of the ITF boys’ and girls’ categories, qualify for the Fed Cup World Group, and qualify for the Davis Cup World, all by 2024.

He stressed that to be able to achieve all of these, there’s a need to augment the current set-up of the current national tennis association to make way for positive changes specifically in making Philippine tennis inclusive to many. This will pave the way for more active memberships from tennis players, increase in pool of talents, and make the association more sustainable in terms of funding.

“There’s really a need to amend the organization if we are to become a world-class association. The association right now is being run by just 12 people who do not represent any Philippine tennis stakeholders, region or clubs. I think it’s very important that we make it more inclusive to everyone and encourage more participation from the whole Philippine tennis community,” said Villanueva.

One of those elated to hear Villanueva’s vision for Philippine tennis is sports patron and PhilTA chairman of the board, Jean Henri Lhuillier.

“It’s refreshing to have this Philippine Tennis Summit and hear the great plans of Villanueva to move forward Philippine tennis. As always, I’ll be here to support in whatever capacity I can to bring to fruition PhilTA’s plans,” said Lhuillier.

During the summit, Villanueva also advised that he initiated the event in an effort to uplift Philippine tennis and clarifies that he does not have any plans to gun for the presidency in the organization’s next election and is just happy to be able to lay down the work for whoever will succeed him.
