Shell engages kids on energy future

As it celebrates 105 years of operation in the Philippines, Pilipinas Shell (Shell) renews its commitment to deliver more and cleaner energy to help meet growing needs and find ways to use energy more efficiently.

At the heart af this commitment is the goal to #MakeTheFuture of energy one that is environmentally and socially responsible and thus, sustainable with the help of all
stakeholders, including kids.

Shell launched its #MakeTheFuture campaign with an event designed for kids at the Mind Museum in Bonifacio Global City Taguig.

"Everything that we are doing today impacts on future generations, ond it is interesting to see what tomorrow's decision-makers and leaders know about energy, how they're affected and what they think must happen to ensure that Shell con help make the future sustainable for them," says Cesar Romero, country chairman of Shell companies in the Philippines.

By holding the Kids #MakeTheFuture event, Shell intends to create an opportunity to promote energy consciousness and education among youngsters, as well as to invite them to join the discussion on improving and making the future of energy.

The young atendees were among the first to see the #MakeTheFuture campaign video which highlights inspiring stories of kids who benefit from ongoing programs like Access to Energy, Shell's program to power off-grid communities using renewable energy.

Romero was joined by Managing Director of Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) Don Paulino and Country Health Manager Dr. Rose Rivera in providing insights on the many ways that everyone, including kids, use and expend energy, and what She ll does to provide them the energy that they need.

Among those who attended the Kids #MaketheFuture event were children of celebrities like Nathan Linsangan, son of Camille Pratts; Micaela, daughter of Danica Sotto-Pingris; and Eio, daughter of Sherilyn Reyes-Tan. Together with other kids from the Trumpets Playshop, The School of Academics and Arts, Eton International School, and children of invited media, they responded to and asked questions during kid-friendly discussions held to jumpstart their energy education.

"We really want to empower kids. They have so much potential to create things, and all we need to do is give them the right resources and opportunities," says Romero,

"By showing them that we can put renewable energy to good use, like powering up communities, we hope to help them realize that they can make the future of energy clean, sustainable and possible for everyone," he adds.

Globe Telecom and The Mind Museum bring the wonder of science

Science comes alive now in your mobile phone or tablet through The Mind Museum app!

Globe Telecom and The Mind Museum (TMM) have joined hands to bring the wonder of science to teachers, students, and to everyone interested in learning through a mobile app which gives users access to over 250 museum exhibits anytime and anywhere via their tablets or smartphones.

The Mind Museum is dedicated to providing an extraordinary educational experience that inspires the public understanding of science.

The TMM app deals with a wide array of topics and questions especially relevant to teachers and students who do not have the time, means, or opportunity to visit The Mind Museum. It is the first educational museum app in the country and promises a rich multimedia experience to anyone who downloads it.
“With the TMM app, we can now truly say that science is everywhere. While being in the museum completes your fun learning experience, having the app brings you closer, like no other technology can, to what animates The Mind Museum inside and out. With this app, kids of all ages, especially students and teachers, will now taste wonder at their fingertips. We can’t thank Globe enough for partnering with us on this and for having “wonder-making” as part of their mission,” said The Mind Museum curator, Maria Isabel Garcia.

“We are glad to partner with The Mind Museum on this app to give everyone a chance to access relevant and engaging educational content using their mobile device. This is in line with Globe Telecom’s commitment to provide Filipinos with 21st century learning and education through Information and Communications Technology with the end goal of creating a digital nation for a #WonderfulPH,” said Fernando Esguerra, Director for Globe Citizenship.
Globe and TMM are also teaming up on the Science Wonder workshop to further support this goal. The Science Wonder workshop is for teachers and scheduled to start next month. The roadshow will be conducted at select public schools which are also recipients of the Global Filipino Schools (GFS) program of Globe. Through the one-day workshop, the teachers will be coached on how to use the different features of the app to make classroom learning more fun, interactive, and interesting.

For instance, even while cooped up inside the classrooms, teachers can still bring their students on a virtual tour of the museum using the Exhibit Guide. This feature provides a map highlighting the exhibits in each gallery and information about them including quick access to exclusive content. The app also sparks curiosity with some mind-starting questions on various K-12 topics which educators and students can take advantage of.

The TMM app also has a collection of do-it-yourself science experiments and demonstrations similar to those being performed by its resident scientists in the museum’s Atom Gallery.

The app provides step-by-step visual guides which can be done in the school or at home using readily available materials.

On the other hand, museum-goers may also take advantage of the app by checking out the Learning Footpaths where they can have themed, self-guided tours around the museum. For quick access to exclusive content about each exhibit, they can take a picture of the QR codes.

The TMM app is available for free download at Google Play and the App Store for Android and iOS users, respectively.

The Mind Museum Keeps the Wonderment of Science in Summer

The Mind Museum known as the Philippines’ first world-class science museum, may be known for having galleries with interactive science exhibits, but not many know that it is also a place that offers unique and fun summer learning activities that tickle the scientist in each child.

CSI 101 shoe impressions as evidence
From simulated crime solving activities, to a behind-the-scenes look on being the museum’s ‘Mind Movers’, to learning about the science behind soccer, The Mind Museum can keep your eyes and minds widening in wonder.

The Mind Museum’s Summer Programs

The Mind Museum continues to provide extraordinary learning and exploration to kids and kids-at-heart.

This summer, The Mind Museum, with the help of JPMorgan Chase & Co., brought an array of activities that will make you appreciate and love learning even more:

Jr MindMover experiments
In the Crime Scene Investigation 101 (CSI 101) program, young inquisitive minds were tasked by the museum’s Mind Movers to examine a crime scene and figure out what could have possibly happened by doing evidence gathering, fingerprinting, odontology and blood splatter analysis.

Kids even presented their cases to a panel of investigators, and winning participants were given badges as their award. It was truly an exciting experience for them to try their hands at solving cases and on being crime scene investigators.

The Mind Museum also partnered with the scientists of the California Academy of Sciences and offered a Marine Science Camp to young wonderers. Held in Aiyanar Beach and Dive Resort, Anilao Batangas, adventurers gained a deeper appreciation for marine biodiversity through interactive activities including a “wet” show & tell of critters & corals, outdoor survival training with tents, sleeping bags and coolers facilitated by Coleman, and stargazing at night with the museum’s resident astronomer. Highlight was the snorkeling activity in the resort’s well-preserved house reef, and identifying the different forms of marine life that they learned about from the scientists of the Academy.
Soccer Science drills
Meanwhile, other budding science prodigies were given the chance to be like the museum’s resident scientists or ‘Mind Movers’. Through the Junior Mind Mover (JMM) program, participants learned about the story of the museum and its galleries, and even performed experiments in front of museum guests. Through the program, they got to explore different fields of sciences in interactive and creative ways.

For kids who both love sports and science, the Soccer Science Program was the perfect activity to enjoy. Held at The Mind Museum and BGC Turf, participants learned the physics behind this sport including the science of curve balls, soccer statistics and soccer anatomy to prevent injuries.

This program, made possible with the help of the Fort Bonifacio Development Foundation, Uratex and Mitre, had participants from a select group of sponsored Taguig public school kids, and soccer enthusiasts from all over Metro Manila.

Unending Wonderment from The Mind Museum

Even if summer is over, they can still expect a lot more mind-blowing educational programs. Watch out for exciting science parties or ‘MindBurst’ events such as the Experiment Circus - travel into the past towards the future of Physics; or take part in the Halloween Special: Myth-busting and Ghost-busting and discover what is this spookiness behind “ghost-busting” activities.
