The Palarong Pambansa 2013 to be held in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, April 21-27

The much-awaited annual sports affair for the first time shall be held in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on April 21-27 2013 to be held at the Don Mariano Perdices Memorial Coliseum.

The Palarong Pambansa 2013 gives a holistic development of the youth to foster discipline, develop teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship, and responsibility.

The Provincial Government of Negros Oriental and DepEd Regional Office VII together by the Schools Division Office of Negros Oriental and the City Schools Division Office of Dumaguete City will host the 2013 Palarong Pambansa.

Negros Oriental Go. Roel Degamo had formally accepted to host the week-long national school games representing the provincial government’s offer of complement funding and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to firm up the roles and obligations of DepEd and the provincial government, as said by Education Secretary Armin Luistro.

The Palarong Pambansa was held at Pangasinan and formerly by Dapitan City last year 2012. The events played in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa and the associated technical guidance shall remain in effect unless modified based on DepEd Memo No. 4 series of 2013. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the DepEd headed by Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Negros Oriental headed by Gov. Roel Degamo last Friday, March 1, 2013. Gov. Degamo added that the Palaro is a huge milestone for the province and the resolve to host it has been firm. He also said that Negros Oriental possess of up to date sports facilities, has playing venues within a 6.6-kilometer radius, safe and clean billeting areas, clean and potable water, continuous electricity and citywide 4G internet connection.

This year there are three added events for the first time as an exhibition sport this year. These are Billiard for secondary boys; Wushu for secondary boys and girls and Futsal for elementary girls. Also, traditional Olympic sports and indigenous games like septak takraw will be included. WIFI connectivity within the area especially in the opening ceremony will be accessible. Gov. Degamo shared that Negros Oriental has tolerated 19 years of waiting before finally having the opportunity to host the yearly assembly of approximately 10, 000 participants.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, said that the department has selected Php 205-million accumulated to the Palaro, with a part of it to be given to Negros Oriental as hosts. DepEd Secretary Br. Armin Luistro, DepEd Region 7 Director Dr. Carmelita Dulangon, Provincial Engineer Franco Alpuerto and Provincial Administrator Jose Arnel Francisco were also present in the activity.

Gov. Degamo promises the participating athletes, coaches and visitors a Palaro they would never forget. And more,  it is no secret that the people of Dumaguete City are hand in hand to rise up from the disaster that has be-fallen.  Dumaguete City is ready for the biggest event the City has had yet. This is one way to showcase that despite the calamities that the city has experienced it is not a hindrance to emanate the capability of the city to host such event.
