DOT, DSWD, and USAID launch One-Step Project

The convergence program, called The One-Step Project, seeks to improve the lives of the poor with more direct interventions through tourism. The One-Step Project is a step to include the poor at the start of the development process and integrate communities, including but not limited to the beneficiaries of DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid), in the tourism value chain.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has inked a partnership with the Department of Social Work and Development (DSWD) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony held last August 5, 2013.
Signatories to the One Step Project (L-R): USAID Philippines Mission Director Gloria Steele, DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. and DSWD Secretary Corazon J. Soliman.
Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. said the project aims to alleviate poverty by improving the “reach” and “power” of our people and to be given opportunities to succeed. “The eradication of poverty begins with the restoration of trust in leadership,” the tourism chief added.

The One-Step Project taps the potential of the 13 million poor Filipinos and the 2.1 million Pantawid households in nine priority tourism clusters. It aims to identify the poor households with greater propensity for success, particularly those living in the tourism clusters that host more than 21 million domestic and foreign tourists, and enroll them in tourism enterprises either as part of a destination community or a supplier community.

Under this partnership, the DSWD, through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), will help DOT translate the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) into a community-driven eco-tourism development plan to ensure inclusive economic growth. The DSWD SLP provides opportunities to its underprivileged participants to be self-reliant by engaging in income-generating activities.

“Tourism has been identified as a major economic driver to spur job creation, income, and revenue generation, and more importantly to spread the benefits to the countryside. This project provides institutional links to ensure effective implementation.  It is providing the poor employment and business opportunities with long-term benefits.  That brings much more stability in governance and raises the emotional quotient of our nation. Inclusiveness is a strategy, not a goal,” Secretary Jimenez said.

According to USAID Philippines Mission Director Gloria Steele, the deeper support towards inclusive growth is a major component of the bilateral agreement of the United States and Philippine governments.

DSWD Secretary Corazaon “Dinky” J. Soliman thanked the DOT and USAID for strengthening the Pantawid program, the government’s conditional cash transfer endeavor, as a vital poverty-reduction and community empowerment initiative.

Using the financial support from the USAID Advancing Philippine Competitiveness (COMPETE) Project, a national technical working group (TWG) will provide the general framework of the project, including the identification of the major activities to be conducted and funded. The One-Step Project will be implemented with support from an organizational structure composed of national and regional TWGs.

The national TWG is composed of the Champions, DOT Undersecretary Maria Victoria Jasmin and DSWD Undersecretary Parisaya Taradji; and Chairperson, DOT Assistant Secretary Rolando Canizal. TWG members include Director Honorita Bayudan, Director Georgina Ann Hernandez, and Angela Mari Ferrer from DSWD; Director Rica Bueno, Phoebe Areño, and Alex Macatuno from DOT. The REID Foundation serves as its technical secretariat, while the regional TWG is composed of the regional directors of the DSWD and DOT, in coordination with other regional offices and their respective local government units (LGUs).

Investigative Report: “The Prevalence of Lice Infestation among Filipino Children”

Investigative Report: “The Prevalence of Lice Infestation among Filipino Children”

In a tropical country like the Philippines, head lice infestation is a common problem especially among school-aged children. In a study by the Department of Education and the University of the Philippines last year, pediculosis (lice infestation) is the second most common problem among students after tooth decay.

In 2000, it was estimated that around 9 million students or 84% of the total public school children population in Metro Manila and in some provinces, were carriers of head lice. Pediculosis or “kuto” affects children aged 7 to 12 years.  Students from Southern Tagalog and Western Visayas were found to have the largest number of pupils affected by head lice.

Head lice affects children’s performance in school and creates social stigma against those with this condition. The problem has greatly concerned education officials that the DepEd launched a program to address the problem in 2000 by giving out anti-lice treatment.

Head lice are tiny parasites that bite the scalp and feed on human blood. According to the US National Library of Medicine, lice can survive on human head for up to 30 days. Their eggs or what is called nits, hatch after nine days and the larvae mature after another nine days.

The bites from lice can cause severe scalp itching and in some cases red bumps on the scalp. Lice infestation is easily transferred through personal contact. While it is not considered as a serious condition, the social stigma attached to this condition is uncomfortable to many.

Some people connects lice infestation to low hygiene and poor economic status. But in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 6 to 12 million kids aged 3-11 years old are infested with lice every year.

Here are ways to avoid head lice infestation:

• Tell your kids to avoid sharing hairbrushes, hats, hair bands, or any hair accessories to other children.
• Inspect your child’s head regularly and look for lice or nits. If you find any that is already a sign for you to act immediately to avoid the lice from multiplying.
• Practice proper hygiene like regularly using shampoo and conditioner to wash your child’s hair.
• It is also important for you to teach your kids to be aware of the signs of lice infestation like itching of the scalp.

Remember not to panic when you find that your child is infested with lice. Children can be very sensitive when they feel that they are being treated like they carry a contagious disease.

There are a number of treatments for head lice. You may consult your family physician for the best treatment as there are products that contain insecticide and may be harmful to your child.  One product in the market that many moms recommend is Licealiz, a head lice treatment shampoo with conditioning formula manufactured by Lamoiyan Corporation.

Heidi, 29, is a regular user of Licealiz.  A mother of three boys aged 8, 6 and 2, Heidi shared that she never imagined her boys would be affected by lice until she saw one on her eldest son while combing his hair.

“I always thought only girls can be infested by lice. I was shocked when I saw it on my son’s hair, near his nape. I don’t know if he got it from me or from his classmates or maybe from the surroundings,” said the young mother from Mandaluyong. She immediately researched on the best treatment and found the blog of another mom who tried Licealiz.

“The shampoo really smells good. Bonus is that, it’s very cheap. Everyone in the house used it until the itchiness and the lice were all gone.  I’ve been recommending it to my sisters and my in-laws ever since,” Heidi said.

Michelle, 32, noticed her daughter’s habit of scratching her head.  Bothered, she bought a lice comb and used it on her.  To her dismay, indeed, she found several matured lice. When she told her best friend about her daughter’s problem, she was advised to try Licealiz.

“My best friend Ella had tried it on her daughter, too. What I like about Licealiz is that it smells good and makes my daughter’s hair really soft. She loves it,” the mother from Cebu City shared.

Like many mothers, chances are your children may also be infested by the tiny crawlers.  Discovering lice on your child’s head should not be cause for an alarm.  Go to the nearest drugstore and grab Licealiz.

Licealiz is non-toxic and is safe to use regularly even for young children. Using it often keeps lice from coming back.  Unlike other brands, Licealiz's active ingredient, pyrethrin, is all natural and extracted from chrysantimum flowers. It not only makes your child’s hair smell good, it also nourishes and make the hair grow healthier.

JAMES HARDIE: THE SCIENCE BEHIND HARDIEFLEX ADVANCED BUILDING COMPOSITES

HardieFlex advanced building composite is made at its world-class facility in Cabuyao, Laguna,
proving James Hardie commitment to its guarantee to homeowners.

James Hardie has a long history of providing innovative building products to customers in Australia, the USA, the Philippines and other international markets. Today, HardieFlex advanced building composite remains one of the most trusted and reliable building materials. The high regard for James Hardie’s products stem from the following characteristics:

High durability and strength.  HardieFlex advanced building composite is designed not to crack even under the harshest weather and environmental conditions. It is resistant to damage due to wind, rain, moisture, and humidity. Furthermore, HardieFlex advanced building composite is combustible: it will not ignite or catch fire even when exposed to flame. HardieFlex advanced building composite is resistant to termite-damage. HardieFlex advanced building composite is designed to perform.

Convenience and versatility.  HardieFlex advanced building composites are very versatile and may be used for ceilings, walls, sidings, eaves, and fascias. They are easily and conveniently installed and conform to any design requirement.

Warranty and environment-friendly. HardieFlex advanced building composite is made from plentiful non-toxic materials that have minimal impact on the environment. In the case of the Philippines, James Hardie manufactures its products in its own facility in Cabuyao, Laguna. This reduces the “carbon footprint” or fuel emissions required to transport its products to the homeowners. In contrast, imported fiber cement products use up a lot of fuel and release greater emissions into the environment.  James Hardie offers a 10-year warranty on its products.
HardieFlex advanced building composite is made for strength and durability.

The process

Do you wonder how James Hardie is able to create such a superior, reliable, and trusted product? Well, while the details of the manufacturing process are trade secrets, we can still find out some of the science behind HardieFlex advanced building composites.

First of all, the basic materials that are combined to create James Hardie’s advanced building composite are of utmost importance. James Hardie began, in the late 1980s, to use cellulose fibers for its products. Until today, James Hardie’s advanced composite building material is made from cement, sand, water, and cellulose.

Why add cellulose? Adding cellulose makes the finished advanced building composite more flexible: bending strength is the result. The final product is not brittle and resists cracking under pressure.

Now, once these ingredients are gathered, how are they combined?  First of all, sand is poured into a huge underground conveyor. This sand passes through what is called a “ball mill”. It is called such because it has steel balls inside that are used to crush the sand into fine powder. Once the sand is powdered, water is added.  Adding water makes it easier to pipe through the sand across the manufacturing plant and also ensures that no heat is produced, eliminating the need for a cooling or exhaust system.

Later on, most of this water is drained from the sand. After draining, the material left is about 80 percent sand. This material will need to be thickened, so at this stage the cellulose is added. Then the cement, sand, and cellulose are combined along with some additives. The result is a liquefied material that is poured through sieves, troughs, and rollers. More water is drained. At the end of this process, a film of fiber cement is created.
HardieFlex advanced building composite withstands extreme conditions of the Philippine weather and environment. Photo shows HardieFlex undergoing one of many quality control tests.
The fiber cement film is then put through a further process of drying and pressing and cutting, until fiber cement boards are created. The flexibility and durability of these HardieFlex fiber cement boards make them versatile—they can be cut, bent and shaped to follow a wide variety of designs.

“The entire process is the result of advanced scientific research, engineering, and technology that is unmatched by James Hardie’s competitors. In fact, James Hardie is already producing highly advanced composite building materials in the Philippines. As for our competitors in Southeast Asia, they can only offer 1st generation fiber cement,” said Rose Pangan, Product Development Manager for James Hardie.

You can discover how your home or building can benefit from the advanced science and engineering behind HardieFlex advanced building composites. Star Cinema shares to Pinoy moviegoers Asia's funniest ghost story...PEE MAK

MARIO MAURER'S BLOCKBUSTER HORROR-COMEDY MOVIE "PEE MAK" TO HIT PH CINEMAS IN AUGUST

In its continuing celebration of its two glorious decades in the movie industry, Star Cinema distributes to Philippine cinemas Thailand's highest-grossing film of all time--"Pee Mak," a one-of-a-kind horror-comedy film that stars Thai superstar Mario Maurer. Asia's funniest ghost story "Pee Mak" is slated to be shown on theaters nationwide on August 28 (Wednesday).
After tackling relevant family issues in "Four Sisters And A Wedding," eye-opening connected tales of life, dream, and love in Skylight Films' drama-comedy film "Tuhog," and highly relatable ordeal of moving on from heart break in "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo" that was shown nationwide started July 31, Star Cinema and its loyal viewers will soon talk about a scary but funny tale of great love shared through Thailand's popular legend of Pee Mak and his ghost wife Nak (Davika Hoorne).

Directed by blockbuster director Banjong Pisanthanakun, who had previously helmed box-office horror films like “Shutter”, “4BIA” and “Phobia 2”, "Pee Mak" was also released in other Asian countries including Taiwan, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Produced by GTH Films, "Pee Mak"s fresh take on a familiar tale, quickly rode high to Thailand's box-office as it reached USD 33 million with 10 million tickets sold nationwide.

Together with Mario and Thai sweetheart Davika in "Pee Mak" are Thailand's funny foursome namely, Nuttapong Chartpong, Pongsatorn Jongwilas, Kantapat Permpoonpatcharasuk and Attharut Khongrasri.

· Synopsis

During the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, many Thai men were drafted to serve in the war. “Pee Mak” or “Mak” (Mario Maurer) was no exception and had to leave his pregnant wife to join the fight. While at war, he met, saved, and formed a close bond with four fellow soldiers: “Ter” (Nuttapong Chartpong), “Puak” (Pongsatorn Jongwilas), “Shin” (Attrarut Khongrasri), and “Aey” (Kantapat Permpoonpatcharasuk) – (The 4 main cast from Phobia 2 Episode “In The End”)

Once the war was over, Mak invited his four best friends to visit his home at a town called Phra Khanong. When they arrived to Phra Khanong, Mak introduced them to his beautiful wife “Nak” (Davika Hoorne) and “Dang” his newborn baby boy. Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey decided to stay in Phra Khanong for a while and moved into the old house across from Mak’s house. Despite having met Nak and Dang, a village rumor was going around that Nak had died giving birth to her stillborn baby, Dang.
It turns out that Auntie Priak, owner of the local liquor shop, was the source of the town rumor. This was completely absurd to Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey. The four friends refused to believe this to be true and were determined to prove the rumors wrong.
Aunty Priak was found dead a few days later, her body floating along the river. Up until this point Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey had never considered the possibility that Nak and her baby could be dead and now lingered on as haunting ghosts.
Initially, the four friends didn’t dare tell Mak about their suspicions because they were afraid that they would end up just like Aunty Priak. It didn't take long before their conscience caught up with them and they realized they owed Mak the truth since he had once saved all of their lives. Now they must risk their own lives to somehow convey to Mak that the living and dead shouldn't coexist together.

In the end, it will be up to Pee Mak to choose between love and reality.
Don't miss "Pee Mak," a comedy-horror film for the whole family that will be shown on Philippine cinemas in August 28, 2013.

BUM endorser Daniel Padilla appears in 3 Magazine covers

There’s really no stopping BUM endorser Daniel Padilla from conquering local showbiz.
Just recently, he has proven yet again why he is one of the most desirable bachelors this side of the world.

This August, the 18-year-old star of ABS-CBN’s upcoming romantic series Got To Believe is on the cover of two different glossies: the college lifestyle magazine Chalk and the entertainment publication YES! Magazine. Prior to appearing in Chalk and YES!, Daniel also headlined the July issue of the male-oriented fashion magazine, Garage, wherein he sported the season’s hottest trend: metallics.

Daniel’s triple cover victory is a rare feat for any male celebrity, especially for someone who is relatively new in the business. But from the way he’s getting projects, Daniel, or simply DJ to his legions of fans, looks as though he was born for this kind of superstardom.
It is quite easy to know why Daniel is so in-demand these days. Aside from having good looks, enigmatic charm, and that unmistakable Padilla swagger, which he probably inherited from his equally famous uncle Robin Padilla, DJ can sing well. In fact, DJ has released two successful Star Records albums, Daniel Padilla in 2012 and DJP in 2013. He also has a sold-out concert called Daniel Padilla Live: A Birthday Concert, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum to back his music credentials.

Daniel is edgy, expressive, passionate, and unpredictable. He’s never afraid of showing his true colors or going against the grain. Having Daniel as BUM endorser for 2 years now makes him a sought-after celebrity image model and BUM is proud to have him since 2011. BUM’s Daniel Padilla limited edition shirt Collection is doing well in all BUM outlets nationwide.
These admirable traits make Daniel Padilla the perfect BUM image model. Both the young actor and the clothing brand seem to share one philosophy, and that is, celebrating individuality.

BUM is available in leading department stores nationwide.

On August 9, 2013, Top Model hopefuls from every corner of the Philippines will be flocking to HYVE in Bonifacio Global City beginning 10 AM to try out for Asia’s most-watched reality TV modeling competition.
Last season, on Asia’s Next Top Model, host Nadya Hutagalung headed the panel of judges, which was composed of fashion director Daniel Boey, fashion photographer Todd Anthony Tyler, and model Joey Mead-King. Together, the judges saw contestants through a slew of modeling challenges designed to hone the contestants’ talents and allow those who have the knack for modelling shine above the rest.

The winner of Season 1 of Asia’s Next Top Model was Jessica Amornkuldilok of Thailand. However, Filipino contestant Stephanie Retuya made it to the Final 3 of the last episode, along with Taiwan’s Kate Ma. What made Stephanie’s journey on Asia’s Next Top Model even more noteworthy was the fact that she made it to the finals against the odds, having been in the bottom two five times (a record in Top Model history) and without winning best photo in the elimination challenges. In the end, through sheer determination and talent, she proved to the judges that she deserved to be in the running for Asia’s Next Top Model.

Star World is again giving another Filipina the chance to vie for the title, calling for all Top Model hopefuls to come to the auditions at HYVE to show off their gorgeous and “fiercest” selves. They’re looking for women who are not only beautiful but also have the poise and the winning attitude that will turn heads at fashion shows. They’re looking for women who believe that they were born to walk the runways of the world and are ready to become the Philippines’ next fashion superstar.

All interested young women are invited to come to Asia’s Next Top Model’s Philippine casting on August 9 Asia at HYVE in Bonifacio Global City beginning 10 AM to show Star World’s judges why they think they should be the country’s next representative for Season 2.
