Sergio Mendes returns to Manila for a live concert at the Smart Araneta on Nov. 15

The catchy and delightful sound that instantly stirs listeners to sing, sway and swoon to its beat will sweep the local concert scene when bossa nova legend Sergio Mendes returns to Manila with his band for a live concert on Saturday, November 15, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

The Big Dome show will kick off the two-city tour dubbed “Sergio Mendes & Brasil 2014 Live In Manila!” that will end with another concert on November 16 at the Waterfront Hotel Cebu. To be featured in the shows is Joe Pizzulo.

To be mounted by Ovation Productions, the musical event will spotlight the bossa nova sensation from Brazil as he showcases his wonderful and easy-listening sound and style that made him the most popular musician in South America and an international star in the past fifty years.

Mendes will take concert-goers through a breathtaking array of hits, such as “Mas Que Nada”, “Magalenha”, “One Nation”, “Timeless”, “What Do We Mean To Each Other”, “For Me,” “Night And Day”, “The Look Of Love”, “Fool On The Hill”, “Timeless”, “Scarborough Fair”, “Pretty World”, “Never Gonna Let You Go”, “Funky Bahia”, “Chorado”, and “What The World Needs Now”.

His other hit songs are “The Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye,” “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing”, “If I Ever Lose This Heaven”, “Going Out Of My Head”, “Put A Little Love Away”, “Waiting For Love”, “Waters Of March”, “Please Baby Don’t”, “So Many Stars” “Night And Day”, “Like A Lover”, “Love City”, “Bridges,” and many more.

As a young boy in Niteroi, Brazil, Sergio Mendes attended the local conservatory of music with the hopes of becoming a classical pianist until he switched at the age of 15 to bossa nova when the popular craze for the jazz-infected derivative of samba swept Rio de Janeiro in the mid-to-late-50s.

Moving to the United States in 1964, he achieved instant success with his band Brasil ’66 following the release on A&M Records of its self-titled debut album that featured a mix of light jazz, a bossa nova beat and contemporary soft pop melodies.

The original line-up of Brasil ’66 comprised of Mendes (piano), vocalists Lani Hall and Bibi Vogel (later replaced by Janis Hansen), Bob Matthews (bass), Jose Soares (percussion) and Joao Palma (drums), with John Pisano as guest guitarist.

The debut LP rose to Number 6 nationally with the strong performance of the single, “Mas Que Nada”. The second album, “Equinox”, produced a trio of hits, “Night And Day”, “Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)” and “For Me”. The third album, “Look Around”, climbed to Number 5 behind a Number 3 single of the group’s cover of The Beatles’ “Fool on the Hill” and an accompanying hit with “Scarborough Fair,” based on the Simon & Garfunkel version of the folk song. “Crystal Illusions”, released in 1969, featured a version of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and the hit single, “Pretty World”.

Mendes attained mainstream prominence when he performed the Oscar-nominated Burt Bacharach and Hal David song, “The Look of Love”, on the Academy Awards telecast in April 1968. Brasil ‘66’s version of the song quickly shot into the Top 10, peaking at No. 4 and surpassing Dusty Springfield’s version from the sound track of the hit James Bond movie, “Casino Royale”.

From 1968 onwards, Mendes was concededly the biggest star in the world of music, riding on a wave of immense international popularity and performing on a variety of venues, from stadium arenas to the White House, where he gave concerts for both Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon.

After an absence of five year, Mendes returned to the music and entertainment scene in 1982, celebrating the event with his 1983 self-titled comeback album – his first Top 40 album in nearly a decade and a half – accompanied by his biggest chart single ever, “Never Gonna Let You Go,” which hit Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1984, he recorded “Confetti”, an album that featured the hit songs, “Olympia”, which was also used as a theme song for the Olympic Games held that year in Los Angeles. By the time Mendes released his 1992 Grammy-winning album, “Brasileiro”, he was recognized as the undisputed master of pop-infected Brazilian jazz. During the same period, he performed with a new group, Brasil ’99 and more recently Brasil 2000 and has been integrating the sounds of Bahian hip-hop into his music.

In 2006, Concord Records released “Timeless”, his first album of newly-recorded materials in eight years, and which featured a catalogue of neo-soul and alternative hip-hop guitarists, most prominent of which was will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas. The album was followed by “Encanto” in 2008 and “Born Tempo” in 2010.

“Sergio Mendes & Brasil 2014 Live In Manila!” is presented by Ovation Productions in partnership with Air21 and Fox International. It is supported by the Edsa Shangri-la, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin, BusinessWorld, Crossover 101.5, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Retro 105.9 FM and 96.3 Easy Rock.

DepEd, DPWH to construct 1,500 classrooms with PAGCOR funds Manila

The Department of Education (DepEd) signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the construction of around 1,500 classrooms worth P2B.

“Our vision is to be a pillar of national development in investing in education. Over the past years, PAGCOR has made substantial changes to ensure that part of vision is really implemented,” DepEd Secretary Br. Armin Luistro FSC said.

Luistro expressed his gratitude to the agencies that continue to help in ensuring that “Filipino students get what they deserve.” He said, “We want to thank PAGCOR for being the biggest and most consistent partner in substantially investing in education, and DPWH for ensuring that school buildings will have building integrity.”

Classrooms are the most basic social infrastructure that we should continue to provide all over the country,” DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said. He added that DPWH will deliver their commitment in building classrooms that are safe and beneficial for the students.

PAGCOR Chairman Cristino Naguiat, Jr. said, “Kami ay nagagalak na kami ay kabahagi kami ng DepEd para sa aming project na “Matuwid na Daan para sa Paaraalan.” Naguiat reiterated PAGCOR’s commitment in the continued delivery of education to the learners.

He said that PAGCOR believes that the future of the country lies in the youth. “The classrooms we are going to build are for them. Tuluy-tuloy po ang ating pagtulong sa DepEd. Hindi po tayo nagtatapos dito. Makakaasa po kayo na may karagdagan pa ito—either sa school buildings or computers. Let us work together for the dreams of our youth to be realized.”

The classrooms to be built will be constructed by DPHW in accordance to the “build-back better” design with specific PAGCOR design elements. PAGCOR shall designate certain locations based on DepEd’s data on classroom needs which will be prioritized for the construction of classrooms.

'Wanderlust' photography exhibition at Water Dragon Gallery

"Branching Out"
Writer/ curator Giselle P. Kasilag combines her twin passions for travel and photography in her first solo exhibition dubbed "Wanderlust: Windows to Asia." Featuring 40 photographs, the exhibit opens on November 13, 2014 -- which is also Kasilag's 40th birthday -- at the Water Dragon Gallery of the Yuchengco Museum.

"Master and Commander"

"Wanderlust" showcases photographs Kasilag has taken on her trips to various places in Asia, including South Korea, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and the Philippines. Her favorite subjects include architecture, especially windows and staircases, as well as street scenes and nature views.

"I like anything that can serve as a portal into another world. I enjoy it when I come across things that are different but still strangely familiar, or so familiar but vaguely different," says Kasilag.

Through her photographs, she hopes others can join her in discovering the extraordinary in the everyday.

Kasilag became a journalist because she wanted to be the person who visits far-off places and gets to write about them for other people's benefit. Back then, she would find herself in a different Philippine city almost every weekend, listing down names of places she could barely pronounce and trying out every food and activity that each one offered.

"Sign in Blue"
For her, wandering became a career.

In recent years, she rediscovered her love affair with the camera which provided her with the best excuse to travel. Her photographs were shown in New York as part of the 2013 event entitled "The Story of Creative." Another piece was projected onto the side of a building in Long Island as part of the "Creatives Rising" event held in the same year. In July 2014, her photograph was shown on electronic billboards covering an entire building in Times Square, New York.

"Pigeonhole"
When not taking photographs or travelling, Kasilag produces and curates exhibits for Project Art, a company she co-owns and runs. She also writes for different publications.
"Spiral Orange"

DepEd, UP-CFA train visual artists and practitioners

In its mission to provide quality K to 12 learning materials, the Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UP-CFA), conducted a five-day workshop for 35 DepEd visual artists and practitioners to enhance learning and teaching resources.

“We want to ensure young learners’ interest in our learning materials. We can do this by putting photographs and artwork in our textbooks,” DepEd Undersecretary for Programs and Projects Dina S. Ocampo said. Ocampo also said that DepEd aims to raise the quality of its learning materials. “Visuals are only one aspect. Ultimately, we want learning materials that do not only sustain learners’ interest to learn but also help them learn.”

DepEd Instructional Materials Council Secretariat (IMCS) Director Socorro A. Pilor emphasized the role of visuals in teaching. “Visuals are important especially among early grade students. Effective visuals help them understand and enjoy their lessons more.”

The workshop was designed to enhance participants’ skill in creating contextualized and effective illustrations for learner’s materials and teacher’s guides. It included discussion and application of practices in publishing, visual design, visual perception, and photography. The workshop ran from October 13 to 17 at UP Diliman.

Discovery Channel marks first anniversary of Super Typhoon with HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM

Typhoon Haiyan – locally known as Typhoon Yolanda and one of the strongest tropical cyclones in history – hit the Philippines last year, leaving thousands dead, infrastructure destroyed and livelihood sources disrupted. Seven months after the megastorm, Discovery Channel and Filipino-British TV star Trey Farley returns to the typhoon-ravaged city of Tacloban to share the Filipinos’ resiliency to the world.

- The 60-minute special which premieres on Saturday, November 8 at 8 PM revisits Tacloban months after it is pummelled by one of history’s most intense storms -

On the first anniversary of typhoon Haiyan, Discovery Channel – in partnership with Filipino documentary makers, Caelestis Productions Inc. – returns to Tacloban to uncover and honor the heroic human effort undertaken to rebuild the storm-ravaged city and the surrounding islands in an exclusive 60-minute documentary.

HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM, hosted by Filipino-British television presenter and actor Trey Farley, will premiere in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia on Saturday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. on Discovery Channel.

In the early morning of November 8, 2013, mega-typhoon Haiyan tore through central Philippines, wreaking havoc across the country and causing widespread devastation. The sheer magnitude of the super storm was unprecedented, and the scale of damage it left in its wake was shocking. Haiyan left thousands dead, cities flattened, crops ruined and a clean-up operation that will last for years.

HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM picks up seven months after Haiyan’s deadly wrath, with Trey returning to his native country to examine the typhoon’s impact on Tacloban, the worst-hit city, what is being done to pick up the pieces and how fellow Filipinos are coping with the aftermath. Tacloban still bears the indelible scars of Haiyan’s destructive path with evidence of it everywhere; the Daniel Z. Romualdez airport has only been partially rebuilt, and much of the city is still on the road to recovery. HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM goes behind the scenes to gain unique insight into the current situation.

In HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM, the Mayor of Tacloban, Alfred S. Romualdez takes host Trey on an up-close inspection of the incredible destruction. They board a grounded cargo ship that remains manned by the stranded crew to this day, and visit a temporary burial site where thousands of bodies had to be identified before being exhumed for placement in permanent graves later. Trey also stops at a school that remains eerily frozen in time after being completely gutted by the typhoon’s storm surge, which was fuelled by winds that reached an average of 195 mph (310 kmph). The program also visits a healing camp where affected children are being taught to forget what they have experienced, and to begin to trust the ocean again.

Tacloban’s recovery has been arduous and reconstruction is still underway, but it is beginning to move forward. HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM uncovers everything that is being done – from the ongoing harrowing aspect of corpse management, to keeping the local airport open as a lifeline in conjunction with the U.S. military, to reconnecting power, helping survivors cope with the emotional trauma of the disaster and the pain of loss, clearing the countless number of downed coconut trees and logging the remaining dead trees to prevent infestation, and preparing for the next possible megastorm.

HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM encores on Sunday, November 9 at 10:00 a.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM was executive produced by Emile Guertin for Discovery Channel, and Sally Jo Bellosillo and Renato Romero for Caelestis Productions Inc.

Watch out for HAIYAN: AFTER THE MEGASTORM, airing one year after the tragedy on Saturday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. on Discovery Channel. Catch it as it encores on Sunday, November 9 at 10:00 a.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Logitech G Unveils World’s Fastest Gaming Mouse

The Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury Offers First-of-its-Kind Fusion Engine; Delivers Unmatched
Speed and Precision

Logitech, a leading innovator of gaming peripherals, has introduced the fastest gaming mouse ever made, the Logitech® G402 Hyperion Fury™ Ultra-Fast FPS Gaming Mouse. The Hyperion Fury features Logitech’s exclusive Fusion Engine™ sensor technology that can reliably track over 500 inches per second (IPS) and Logitech’s exclusive Delta Zero™ sensor technology for unrivaled accuracy.

“We took on the challenge of creating the world’s fastest mouse in service of FPS gamers, and after three years of intensive R&D we are proud to launch a mouse that only Logitech could develop,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, general manager of the Logitech gaming business. “The Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury is the fastest gaming mouse, bar none, and the best mouse for high-speed FPS gameplay. Its lightweight design, combined with the precision and capability of the Fusion Engine, lets you make fast, furious swipes and dominate the battlefield, proving once again that Science Wins!”

The Fusion Engine in Hyperion Fury, created by Logitech engineers, solves a problem many FPS players have: their mouse can’t track as fast as they can move. By combining state-of-the-art optical sensor technology with an accelerometer and gyroscope, the Fusion Engine provides unmatched tracking speed.

“Hyperion Fury is now the go-to in my hardware arsenal,” said Braxton “Swag” Pierce, a Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) champion for iBUYPOWER. “It’s the mouse I have been waiting for.”

Superior Tracking Speeds

A 32-bit on-board ARM processor powers the Fusion Engine in Hyperion Fury, allowing reliable and accurate tracking speeds exceeding 500 inches per second. In addition, lightweight materials and low-friction feet allow for high-speed moves, while offering the most comfortable feeling.

Unrivaled Accuracy and Precision

The Logitech exclusive Delta Zero technology ensures pinpoint accuracy for Hyperion Fury. Four DPI settings can be accessed in an instant, so you can shift down for pixel-perfect sniping or shift up for high-speed maneuvers, all with maximum precision. Using Logitech Gaming Software, you can add a fifth DPI setting and customize the experience to your liking. With DPI shifting, Hyperion Fury can go from 4000 DPI to 240 DPI in the blink of an eye, giving you the flexibility to thrive in the chaos of battle.

Customizable Settings

Hyperion Fury features eight programmable buttons that can be configured for anything – whether complex macros or single keystrokes – using Logitech Gaming Software. Your personal configuration can be saved to onboard memory for maximum speed and accessibility.
