The Dangers of Sick Days ? Here's the children’s new disease-fighting sidekicks!

When kids are on their sick days, parents always think what they can give their suffering child to make them better faster.

Despite the limited forms of cure of diseases, they can be extremely uncomfortable nuisances, resulting in a staggering number of missed days from work and school. It is not surprising that many people are willing to try and pay for almost anything to relieve the annoying symptoms of the common cold.

When kids skip school due to illness, they miss more than just a class – they miss opportunities for growth

More and more Filipino children are contracting viral and bacterial disease because of weak immune systems, a recent clinical study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism reveals. This growing prevalence of infection in school-age populations is particularly urgent because a single sick day may affect many different facets of your child’s life, including time-sensitive activities like going to school to attend classes.

Multiple sick days are likely to set back your children’s education, as well as their overall development and growth. Classes are typically dependent on very specific timelines, and whenever schoolchildren get sick, they miss valuable lessons that may prove to be crucial later on in the school year. This compromises the pacing for their growth as individuals. It can be very hard for students who are often absent to get back on track.

With school in full swing, it’s important to make sure that your children are kept safe from infection.

Here are some best defense, new disease-fighting sidekicks!
- Stay clean and clear of people who are coughing and sneezing.
- Good hand washing will help your family avoid most infections.
- Clean toys and teach older kids to wash their hands and to cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze, or tell them to bend their arm and sneeze into the crook of their elbow.
- Let them get some air. Breathing fresh can do wonders for a croupy cough.
- Drinking fluids can also loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. If your child refuses water, offer juice, the age-old remedy - chicken soup and of course, the best defence - fruits!
 - A serving of pineapple a day helps strengthen immunity

Thus, there is a strong need for better ways to give children the nutrients they need to stay healthy.

Thankfully, parents have an easy, enjoyable way to help protect kids from infection and keep them in school – pineapples.

Gelli Victor hosted the round table discussions regarding the children's immunity and the importance of fruit consumption in a child's diet, held at the Loft 2 Museum Cafe, Ayala, Makati City, August 18, 2015.

Just what do canned pineapples have that make them our children’s new disease-fighting sidekicks?

As studies show, a lot actually!

The said clinical study checked the possible effects of canned pineapples as a practical immunity booster. A nine-week randomized, controlled trial was conducted on 98 elementary school students in Paco, Manila. The students were divided into three groups. Two of the three groups of children were regularly served Del Monte Pineapple Tidbits. The third group served as the control group and was not given any canned pineapples.

Only the groups who took regular servings of Del Monte Pineapple Tidbits had an increased resistance to disease and infection, with those taking two servings (140g per serving) demonstrating higher granulocyte production.

Granulocytes are key components of white blood cells and are important players of the immune system. They are the fighter cells that detect and kill disease-causing viruses and bacteria. Finally, a healthy solution that’s tastier than most!

The results show that adding 2 servings of canned pineapples to your children’s daily diet goes a long way towards protecting them from sickness. Giving children #DMPineappleADay is a quick, easy, and delicious way of strengthening their immunity, while supplying much-needed nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, fiber, and manganese.

A stronger immune system can help prevent children from missing out on many opportunities.

With this, children will be able to fight off infection, keep attending classes, and make the most of their precious time in school.

#DMPineappleADay keeps the doctors away... #DMPineappleADay is the best disease-fighting sidekick!

Brother signs up University of Southern Philippines Foundation for Toner Management Program

One of the leading providers of home and business IT peripherals, Brother International Philippines Corporation (Brother Philippines), has recently signed up the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), a private university in Cebu City, for its Toner Management Program.

Brother Philippines’ Toner Management Program is the company’s innovative solution for its institutional or corporate customers. Through the program, customers who sign a two-year toner supply agreement with Brother can avail of its multi-function centres without upfront payment. The program also gives customers the convenience of having the experts take care of the maintenance of the machines, and the replenishment of their printer consumables.
In photo after the signing of the Brother Color Toner Management Program agreement between Brother Philippines and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation are (left to right): Tekzone Computer Sales and Services Sales Coordinator, Brenna Vito; Brother Philippines President, Glen Hocson; USPF Director of Finance, Rosalina Jereza Sepulveda; USPF President, Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan; Brother Philippines Deputy General Manager for Sales and Marketing, Masao Kasagi; USPF Chief Information Officer, Lester Gastala; and Tekzone Computer Sales and Services Accounting Supervisor, Zesprela Bingil.
This will provide offices a more cost effective way to acquire and operate multi-function centres (printers with other functions like faxing, scanning and copying) in the office.

USPF Finance Director Rosalina J. Sepulveda has initially conducted the research on the total printing costs of the university and found out that over the years, USPF’s printing costs soared high without the benefit of statistical data to support the investment.

USPF Chief Information Officer Lester Gastala said, “To address our printing cost concerns, we need to partner with a firm that not only delivers reliable technology and supports infrastructure duly tested by the country’s top international schools and local universities, but also one that provides value for investment.”

“Moreso, a balance deployment strategy should be in place,” he added.

USPF President Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan said, “Private universities like us have to find ways to cut down on operating costs to be able to offer reasonable tuition fees while not compromising the quality of our education. This is why we thank Brother Philippines for introducing its Toner Management Program because it allows us to maintain our printing costs at manageable levels.”

Brother Philippines President Glenn P. Hocson said, “Our toner management program will definitely make our products more attractive as they are now more affordable to broader segments of businesses. It aims to help offices like that of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation concentrate on their core operations by allowing Brother to handle their printing needs.”

Hocson adds, “The program signals our readiness to take on more responsibilities for our corporate customers. It is also our way of challenging ourselves to keep on growing as we come up with more and more innovative solutions, especially for our corporate customers.”

This expansion of Brother Philippines through its corporate business portfolio is aligned with the Brother Group’s strategy to reinforce solutions offering as a pillar of growth. Starting as a sewing machine repair shop in Japan over a hundred years ago, the Brother Group has evolved and grown, and now has manufacturing and sales facilities in over 44 countries and regions worldwide.

Celebrate Filipino Culture and Cuisine at Robinsons Manila Malls! Join "Pistang Pinoy" and "Flavor of Manila" Food & Culture Festival

It has often been observed that the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines is seamlessly captured through our equally enticing cuisine. Indeed, the tapestry of our geographic diversity and historical influences is well-reflected in the way that our best-loved dishes (both savory and sweet) are interpreted.

Through a remarkable array of exhibits, demonstrations, parades, workshops, and performances, two of Manila’s most popular malls will highlight the amazing synergy that exists between Filipino culture, art, and food.

From August 28 to August 30, Robinsons Place Manila, premium mall in the heart of Manila and a favorite shopping destination of tourists will feature “Flavors of Manila”, which will offer a unique activity for each of the three days it will be held. Day one will present a water lilly bag making workshop, with a traditional rondalla performace delighting visitors on the next day. The final day kicks off with a cooking demonstration by “Master Chef” sensation Chef Myra, followed by a water lilly gown parade and a cultural performance. Throughout the entire duration of the festival, visitors can indulge their cravings for Filipino food via an impressive line-up of tenant booths and stalls.

Meanwhile, Robinson’s Place Otis will begin the festivities a little earlier, beginning on August 22 and lasting up to the 28th. In order to conclude the “Buwan ng Wika” with delighful flair, the Pandacan area’s most contemporary shopping complex brings wonderful new meaning to “Pistang Pinoy”. The Fiesta-themed event will feature exciting and interactive traditional Filipino games, as well as performances from the country’s leading cultural dancers (Tingob and banga dance, tinikling, karatong, katzudaratan and singkil) and singers. Needless to say, a vast selection of customary Filipino dishes, delicacies, and pasalubong items will be readily available to take customers on a veritable culinary tour of the Philippines.

Flavors of Manila and Pistang Pinoy will be held in partnership with Mangan Filipino Restaurant, Bacolod Inasal, Vibes Massage, Dermstrata, and BGT Healthcare Center.

RED Planet REDefined: Red Planet launches value hospitality brand in the Philippines; Official opening of its 10th hotel in the country

RED Planet REDefined.

Pioneering regional hotel group Red Planet launched its new hospitality brand in the Philippines today, coinciding with the official opening of its tenth hotel in the country.

The introduction of Red Planet Amorsolo, Manila brings the number of Red Planet rooms in the country to 1,720, reinforcing Red Planet as the largest international hotel owner/operator in the Philippines.

The new Red Planet hotel brand was specifically created to redefine the value hotel experience for domestic and international travellers in Asia by providing a high quality, comfortable and connected, technologically-enabled stay in desirable locations at attractive prices.

Red Planet also owns and operates hotels in Indonesia, Japan and Thailand.
Tim Hansing, Red Planet Chief Executive Officer
Red Planet Chief Executive Officer, Tim Hansing, said the Philippines is one of Asia’s fastest growing travel markets, and Red Planet’s hotels are targeted at the value conscious traveller.

“It’s all about value,” Mr Hansing said. “Value for our customers in a hotel that provides a clean, efficient stay and of course staying connected through our investment in providing fast, free WiFi, which is crucial to all of our guests.

“Our commitment to bringing our brand and concept to the Philippines is for the long term and we already have a confirmed pipeline and investment strategy to open more hotels in the coming years.”

A key component of the new Red Planet brand is a highly functional mobile app. Not only is it a simple and efficient booking portal, but when guests arrive at a Red Planet hotel it activates an in-stay mode. The app then feeds information about relevant local events and points of interest directly to guest’s hand-held devices. It also facilitates room-to-room and front desk calling, as well as a chat line, along with many other innovative features.

It is a full package of assistance no other hotel group in the sector offers.

“No matter what class of hotel we are staying in, technology will always play a key part of getting the most out of your stay in the hotel and the city you are in,” Mr Hansing added. “We are always looking to add value to a guest’s stay through our investment in technology at all times.”

Arturo Boncato, Philippines Department of Tourism, Assistant Secretary

Philippines Department of Tourism, Assistant Secretary – Tourism Regulation, Arturo Boncato, attended today’s launch and welcomed Red Planet’s commitment to making value conscious travel more accessible to domestic and international travellers in the country.

“The Department of Tourism has a strong obligation to our country to work closely with international and local companies contributing to vital tourism infrastructure and we are pleased to be able to support Red Planet during the launch of their new brand in the Philippines,” Mr Boncato said.

“The Philippines works tirelessly in promoting our country to international and domestic travellers and securing this type of international investment helps our tourism industry grow and get stronger.”

Mr Hansing added Red Planet would continue to expand in the Philippines as the country “deserved a reliable hotel product in the value sector that people can trust”.

Since opening its first hotel in 2011, Red Planet has welcomed more than three million guests to its 24 hotels. The company has raised several rounds of capital from private investors and anticipates a future public listing in the region.

Sweet Dreams with Elica

A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world.Taking care of your child is always the priority to help keep them healthy and happy.

When a child can’t sleep at night, it’s usually because of the monsters under the bed. And that keeps mommies awake too. That’s why they do everything in their power to drive away the scares so that kids can have a good night’s rest. But there’s one monster that is difficult to put to sleep: the monster that attacks the skin, eczema.

Since many people with eczema also have allergies, the doctor may perform allergy tests to determine possible irritants or triggers. Children with eczema are especially likely to be tested for allergies. The goal of treatment for eczema is to relieve and prevent itching, which can lead to infection.

Eczema is characterized by red, dry, itchy rashes on the skin. It is more common in children than in adults. It can also have a huge negative impact on a kid’s life, like sleep deprivation.

Such is the case for celebrity mom Cheska Garcia-Kramer and her daughter Scarlett. According to Cheska, Scarlett used to cry at night because of her itchy rashes. But after their doctor recommended mometasone furoate or Elica, a topical steroid from Bayer Philippines, both mom and child saw results within 24 hours. The peaceful rests returned and since then, both mother and daughter have had sweet dreams.
Cheska Garcia-Kramer and her daughter Scarlett

Cheska shared her daughter’s itch story in the “Sweet Dreams with Mometasone furoate (Elica)” launch on August 19, 2015 at Ascott, Bonifacio Global City, where both she and Scarlett were revealed as the newest celebrity endorsers for Elica. “Scar couldn’t sleep talaga when she gets eczema flare-ups kasi it’s so itchy and she keeps on scratching,” Cheska said. During the event, the causes of Eczema and how it could negatively impact children were discussed.

Eczema flare-ups can be triggered by several factors, including dust mites, family pets, heat or harsh soaps. “These triggers should be controlled in order to avoid the symptoms of eczema,” Dr. Lyra Yamat iterated.

Flare-ups may require more than just moisturizers and in such instances, a fast and powerful treatment is needed. Elica, a topical steroid, is considered to be the first line of defense for eczema. It can help relieve eczema symptoms with visible results in 24 hours, and needs only to be applied once daily, unlike most topical steroids that are applied twice a day. Moreover, clinical studies have demonstrated Elica’s efficacy and safety profile. Elica has also been recommended and prescribed by doctors for many years.

“Eczema should be treated immediately, because it can affect a child’s self-esteem, social activities and of course, sleep,” Dr. Yamat further explained.

When Eczema strikes, use the effective treatment of Elica and see results in 24 hours, so that both kids and moms can sleep tight.

“Our pediatrician recommended Elica and it really helped relieve Scarlett of the itch, redness and swelling because of her eczema,” Cheska said.

Elica comes in cream and ointment formats, available over-the-counter without doctor’s presciption. For more information on Elica, go to www.treateczema.ph or visit www.facebook.com/ElicaPH.

Mommies enjoy the wonderful world of scrapbooking by FUJIFILM and Wonder Photo Shop-Tokyo

Mommies enjoyed bringing back the love and fun of scrapbooking, as FUJIFILM Philippines Inc. and Wonder Photo Shop-Tokyo in Ayala-U.P. Town Center  hosted a Wednesday afternoon (August 19, 2015) of creativity and pure fun for mommies and friends.

Creating keepsakes, memories, collecting anything you don't want to lose, most especially photos, postcards and even recipes - that's Scrapbooking.

Scrapbooking will never get old. It’s fun, creative, and brimming with nostalgic memories. Even if it has become less of an activity these days, many still consider it as their favorite hobby or past time. After all, experts say that it has plenty of health benefits like improving your well-being and mental functions.

Studies have shown that scrapbooking is a good stress-buster, serving as a quiet distraction from the cares of the world. It can help you get that sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence especially when you are able to finish a project. It improves concentration and focus as well. Most important, it brings back happy memories, creating that special bond with your loved ones.
msmyrnz

With that in mind, FUJIFILM Philippines Inc. and Wonder Photo Shop-Tokyo bring back the love and joy of scrapbooking. There are a lot of ways to make scrapbook pages.

The Wonder Photo Shop-Tokyo, the first FUJIFILM’s concept Store in South East Asia, is a one-stop boutique and learning center that offers an array of printing services and products that include Instax Share, a portable printing device, and the Instax camera.

Scrapbooking becomes easier as the shop has lots of photo accessories like washi tape, fancy photo albums, photo frames and stickers. Plus, the Wonder Photo Shop-Tokyo boasts a friendly and cool design so that families and friends can have fun creating their scrapbooks.

Instax Share

Instax Share is one of the most innovative and handy printing solution to Instax cameras and mobile devices. Simply download the app, FUJIFILM Instax Share; send your photos through the app, and print as much as you can, anytime, anywhere. Available are a variety of templates for the printed photos: real time, limited edition, SNS (for Facebook and Instagram), square, seasonal and standard.
msmyrnz

When you select real time template and take a photo, the date, place, weather, temperature, and humidity are indicated in the frame. Since you cannot make a copy with this template, the photo will be the one and only in the world.

With limited edition, each print is numbered so it looks like a limited item. A memory shared with people you cherish will be even more precious.

The SNS template is for printing images uploaded to social networking sites. The photo is printed together with the number of likes it got.

The square template fits the photo into a square so that there will be space for writing your thoughts, mood, and messages.

Seasonal templates allow you to design the printed photo in different designs to fit a special occasion: birthday, christening, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.

If you like things simple, the standard template is just as good.

The Intax Share also has filter options with your choice of black and white or sepia. Using FUJIFILM digital cameras, you can easily send photos to Instax Share and directly print your photos.

Instax Camera

This instant camera is cuteness overload packed with basic photography settings you can play around with. The entry level Instax Mini 8, for instance, automatically determines the best brightness for taking a picture, and informs you of the suitable setting by lighting the corresponding lamp. While setting the brightness adjustment dial to the high-key mode mark allows you to take pictures with a softer impression.

Fun day

During the event, mommies and friends were treated to a demonstration of how photos from Instax cameras don’t immediately fade even if they’ve been submerged in water for a certain amount of time. They were also encouraged to take photos using Instax cameras as well as download and print the photos from their mobile devices using the Instax Share.

They then proceeded to create their most beautiful scrapbook from their printed photos and the accessories made available to them at the Wonder Photo Shop.

PH to host major travel trade shows and conferences in September

PH to host major travel trade shows and conferences in September
The Philippines is set to host the country’s biggest and most important travel trade event next month – the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX). Organized by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) in line with its Visit the Philippines Year (VPY) 2015 campaign, this year’s PHITEX will include a 2-day, power-packed conference on general tourism and MICE marketing. It is expected to bring together the different stakeholders in the tourism industry and endorse the country as an ideal destination for various international and high-level business and economic meetings.

“The tourism industry has made so much growth this year with the number of international tourist arrivals increasing by 8.15% since the start of the VPY20125 campaign last January. This is also complimented by the boost in the local tourism scene. With this, it only proves that with enough support from the government and cooperation from the different stakeholders, the tourism industry can grow and compete in the international travel market,” shares TPB Chief Operating Officer Domingo Ramon Enerio III.
TPB Chief Operating Officer Domingo Ramon Enerio III

Kick-starting the events is MICECON, the country’s largest assembly of local stakeholders in Meetings, Incentive travel, Conventions, and Events/Exhibitions (MICE) industry, including hotel and resort owners, tour operators and decision-makers in the hospitality sector. Taking place on September 1-2 at the Manila Marriott Hotel, the two-day conference will showcase new developments, establishments and products in the country as well as advance its capabilities in targeting and handling the MICE market.

MICECON will be followed by the 14th PHITEX, which will be held on September 3 at the same venue. An annual leading marketing congress in the country, the PHITEX aims to strengthen the country’s brand image and encourage the participants to promote affordable and competitive tourism packages. International buyers from Asia, the US, Europe, and other parts of the world will be attending to meet and network with local sellers. Delegates will likewise be composed of MICE industry leaders will discuss global trends in travel, tourism and marketing innovations.

Highlighting PHITEX 2015 are the TRAVEX sessions, which are exclusive business-to-business appointment meetings between Philippine sellers and foreign buyers. These sessions will not only showcase the country’s most competitive MICE and leisure products and services but will also provide foreign buyers the opportunity to experience the fun and exciting post tours to main Philippine attractions and destinations.

Culminating this week-long event is the 26th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) on September 4-6 to be held at SMX Convention Center. Organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), PTM is considered to be one of the major travel trade exhibitions in the promotion and marketing of domestic and inbound tourism. The event will attract buyers from all over the world as it presents the best and most affordable tour packages in the country.

“With the upcoming PHITEX, MICECON and PTM, we will once again prove that the Philippines is truly an important destination for international tourists, as well as sustain the success and growth of the tourism industry beyond VPY 2015,” adds Enerio.

Champion event  host celebrity Robi Domingo asked the media and guests "What exactly does “tapat” mean? "

This was the question posted by Champion Detergent in a “Tapatan with Ms. Susan Roces” held last August 18, 2015 at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel.

People said it means "Loyal", "Sincere" or "Honest", one answered "Committment". Although people define it differently, what holds true across these definitions is that the intent always remains pure and honest – and this transcends both individuals and generations.

Just as “tapat” has been relevant before, it remains relevant even today and especially among today’s youth. And it is this value of katapatan that is shared strongly between Champion Detergent and its long-time brand endorser, Ms. Susan Roces.

The icon, veteran actress, the undisputed Queen of Philippine Cinema, Ms. Susan Roces, who was the perfect speaker for the event, talked about her own views on “katapatan” and how important it is in today’s modern world, especially with the younger generation.

And there was no better person to talk about this topic than veteran actress Ms. Susan Roces known for always delivering top rate performances and setting the standard upon which young actresses today are measured.

Her new Champion TV commercial, which was also launched on the same day, asked the question, “Ang katapatan, mahalaga pa rin ba sa kabataan?” By the end of the 30-seconder, we are assured that “katapatan” remains a core value in the Filipino youth. The younger generation still finds it important to be true to one’s self, fight every battle fair and square, and do the best in every job even when nobody’s looking.

We are also assured that “katapatan” remains “uso” and relevant despite the influences of the modern age. In fact, manifestations of “tapat” manage to resurface time and again among millenials -- in their conversations and in social media. Reaffirming Champion’s belief that “tapat” truly is enduring across generations.

With the tagline, “Tapat po sa inyo,” Champion Detergent hopes to inspire every Filipino to perform every task with honesty and integrity. In the same way that the brand is constantly motivated by its belief in doing the right thing, thereby enabling Filipinas to have cleaner homes and better lives via products with uncompromised quality that they deserve.

Indeed, a Tapatan with the generous and inspirational Susan Roces was a tremendous event that truly upheld Champion Detergent’s principles, further proving what we Filipinos already know about the brand – “Tapat po sa inyo.”

Painting a better future for students of Taguig

Many public schools in the Philippines require constant maintenance, owing mostly to the torrential rains and high humidity brought about by local weather. This makes their upkeep a race against nature.

While some school buildings may have lost their sheen, it takes a bit of help to make them look bright and conducive to learning.

Taguig National High School is an example of such an institution. Through the DepEd’s “Brigada Eskwela” program, Philam Life Foundation has recently repainted and turned over a brand new-looking building to the school, which currently educates about 2,000 students in its K-12 program. The Math building includes eight newly-repainted classrooms, complete with about 40 desks and a blackboard for each classroom.

Philam Foundation KaAkbay volunteers and Taguig National High School volunteers worked hand in hand to repaint the building including some areas of the school.

Following the activity, Philam Life’s newly-elected CEO Axel Bromley expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers. “As you know, our corporate headquarters is located in Taguig, so we were doubly inspired to do our part to help this community,” he explained. “I believe that one of the best forms of community service is educational support, so I am truly honored to be a part of this initiative. Moreover, it was amazing to see Filipino bayanihan in action,” Bromley further enthused.

In addition, Philam Foundation also donated a 3-classroom building to Taguig National High School under its Philam Paaralan Program. The Foundation has donated over 80 classrooms across the country since it started the program in 2011.

Philam Foundation is the CSR arm of Philam Life, the country’s premier life insurance company. As part of the AIA group of companies, Philam Life began its commitment to reach out to communities in need, with a special program dedicated to the Philippine public school system through the Philam Paaralan program.
