EVEN IN FICTION, PRINCE HARRY’S FIANCÉ REMAINS VOCAL AGAINST STATUS QUO

Meghan Markle’s character in Blue Ant Entertainment’s TV show Suits stands her ground for gender equality

All eyes are on Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle as they prepare to tie the knot on May 19. The Big Day will be another sensation in the history of British royal weddings not only because the bride-to-be is a commoner or because the couple is having lemon elderflower instead of the customary fruitcake. Rather, Markle says she is delivering a speech at the reception—a privilege often reserved to the most important men of the event: the groom, the father of the bride, and the best man.

A staunch advocate of gender equality, Markle has never been shy about her views despite knowing that she is marrying into British Royalty, which isn’t allowed to speak publicly about politics. Royal watchers may find her defiance of protocol shocking, yet fans of the actress aren’t strangers to her strong personality and feminism in her fictional role as Rachel Zane in television legal drama Suits.

Here are just a few times Markle as Rachel Zane has stood up for herself in a sea of ambitious and powerful men:

Not Daddy’s Little Girl

The daughter of a skilled lawyer and law firm name partner, Robert Zane, Rachel would rather support herself financially through hard work than take advantage of her father’s wealth.

Too Smart for a Paralegal

Rachel may be a paralegal for almost six years, but she is not afraid to show that she’s a lot better than most associates in the firm. Just having her own office is proof that her abilities are recognized by the bosses.

No Easy Target

There’s no excuse for men to flirt with a woman they fancy in a professional setting. Rachel makes sure she sends the message clearly like when she called out Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) during his orientation for hitting on her and ogling the whole time. She even keeps a drawer of staplers to keep tabs on how many men have flirted with her at work.

Femme Fatale

If she does want to reciprocate a man’s interests, Rachel can be very bold and might even make the first move.
