Huawei's Ryan Ding: Ongoing Innovation Is Lighting up the Future of Every Industry

[Barcelona, Spain, June 30, 2021] During MWC Barcelona 2021, Huawei Executive Director and President of Carrier BG Ryan Ding delivered a keynote speech Innovation: Lighting up the Future. In his keynote, Ding said that innovation in ICT is becoming a key driver of the global economy and its value is moving beyond the telecoms industry. Ongoing innovation in 5G, in particular, will bring more value to operators, the ICT industry, and the global economy, and will light up the future of every industry.

Ryan Ding delivering a keynote

More than telecoms: Innovation in the ICT industry is becoming a key economic driver

The pandemic, Ding said, has created a new normal in which the digital economy is the driving force for the global economy. ICT infrastructure, as the cornerstone of the digital economy, is playing an increasingly important role. Ding mentioned that the value of ICT now transcends the telecoms industry and has transformative implications for the global economy as a whole.

In countries where 5G is developing faster, operators have seen faster revenue growth, and these countries also tend to have better digital infrastructure overall. Taking China as an example, in less than 18 months, more than 820,000 5G base stations have been deployed, and Chinese operators achieved a 6.5% increase in revenue and a 5.6% increase in net profits in the first quarter this year. The rapid development of digital infrastructure driven by 5G will add EUR1.9 trillion to the Chinese economy in the next five years. The same stories are also unfolding in South Korea and Europe.

More than connectivity: 5G innovation is enabling operators' business success

As ICT infrastructure is the cornerstone of the digital economy in the 5G era, operators are playing a more important role than they used to.

Ding said, "Currently, the major goal of operators in 5G is to achieve business success in three key markets – consumers, homes, and industries – through innovation in network deployment, market development, and operation optimization."

"In the consumer market, 5G means not just faster speeds; it also brings new experiences and new value. Some operators have already achieved initial business success."

According to Ding, there are three steps an operator can take to succeed in the 5GtoC market. The first is to speed up 5G deployment, with targeted network planning and investment based on precise insights into high-value areas, key scenarios, and potential users. The second is to accelerate 5G user migration, and the third step is to create value-driven, flexible pricing models.

Today, 5G has been applied in over 1,000 projects in more than 20 industries including steel and mining, enabling safer and more efficient production. Chinese operators have made great progress and are entering the phase of taking early successes and replicating them at scale.

"We've learned from Chinese operators' experience that the success of 5GtoB depends on three factors," said Ding. "First, selecting the right industries. Operators should choose target industries by looking at four factors: demand, affordability, replicability, and technical feasibility. Second, defining the scope of your offerings. Operators can serve as network providers that offer connectivity services. They can also serve as cloud service providers, or even system integrators that provide end-to-end integration services. Different roles require different skillsets and yield different business value. Third, designing innovative business models. This is key to replicating 5GtoB success at scale."

During the pandemic, there is a growing demand for home broadband, and this has highlighted the advantages of 5G FWA that enables rapid deployment and contactless O&M. Middle East operators have achieved remarkable commercial success by taking FWA as a key use case of 5G.

More than business: Huawei keeps innovating to drive industry-wide sustainability

"5G success first requires a 5G network that provides the best user experience, and this guides how we innovate at Huawei," said Ding. Huawei has launched the industry's lightest and most powerful Massive MIMO that consumes less energy. It can be carried and installed by just one person, which speeds up network deployment. With Huawei's Optical Cross-Connect (OXC), one sub-rack can replace nine cabinets normally needed. It has four times larger capacity, but uses 95% less power. Huawei's 5G Super Uplink solution combines the advantages of 2.1 GHz and 3.5 GHz to enhance uplink capacity and indoor coverage. This solution provides a peak uplink rate of over 450 Mbit/s, enabling hundreds of users to live stream the Xiamen Marathon in 4K in April using their 5G smartphones.

To support green development models and carbon neutrality, according to Ding, Huawei keeps innovating at three levels: equipment, sites, and networks. At the equipment level, Huawei uses components with higher power efficiency to make hardware platforms more energy efficient. At the site level, Huawei's simplified site solutions help operators lower energy consumption, as well as save on electricity and rent. At the network level, Huawei has launched a multi-band and multi-RAT power saving solution. This solution can cut energy consumption in wireless networks without compromising network performance. With Huawei's innovative solution, 5G equipment working in low and high bands can share a cabinet, and as a result, less energy is used. When it comes to multi-band equipment power saving, Huawei's goal is to make one plus one less than one.

Collaborating to create an ecosystem and evolving 5G for a better future

Concluding his keynote, Ding emphasized that 5G development requires ongoing innovation. In 5GtoB, for example, 5G standards need to be coordinated with industry standards at a faster rate, and 5G should be integrated into enterprises' core production processes to help them go digital and intelligent. At the same time, the synergy between 5G, cloud, and computing will further expand the boundaries of operators' business, creating space for new growth. 5G innovation is an ongoing process. Huawei believes that innovation will light up the future.

Tolak Angin Boosts the Filipino Family's Immunity and Digestive Health

Now more than ever, it is important for Filipinos to take care of their health. With the increasing pressures of everyday life, now made even more challenging by the current health crisis, they must try to find added support that can help them push through.

Tolak Angin, a liquid herbal supplement that is designed to boost your immune system, has been around for 90 years in the market and is a trusted herbal supplement from Indonesia. The name itself is roughly translate to “expel the wind” – as the supplement is meant to be a remedy for people who experience “Masuk angin” (entry of the wind or “Lamig” in Filipino) and other ailments and conditions that are caused by weakened immune system, such as upset stomach, dry throat, chills, or any other early cold symptoms.

This herbal supplement is made from 12 natural herbs, including ginger, mint, honey, oryza sativa, fennel, Indian screw tree, and clove leaves among others – all high-quality herbs and natural ingredients that are processed carefully and thoroughly using state-of-the-art equipment to maintain their benefits, under strict standards of sanitation and quality control.

Consuming Tolak Angin is good for digestive health and alleviates symptoms associated with colds, such as upset stomach, flatulence, chills, nausea, fatigue and motion sickness.

It can also provide additional strength and support for those facing physically tough and un-ideal situations which are becoming more and more common every day. It is perfect for those who have to work late or on irregular schedules, as well as people who are exposed to environmental elements, risks and hazards (including rain, bad weather and pollution among others).

PROVEN NATURAL AND SAFE

Tolak Angin has passed pre-clinical tests with Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University, and it has been scientifically proven to increase T-Cell count, an indicator of improved immune system. It has also gone through industry-standard toxicity tests with Faculty of Pharmacy Sanata Darma University to ensure it is safe to consume long-term every day.

“Tolak Angin was first formulated in 1930 by Mrs. Rachmat Sulistyo and since then it has been trusted by many generations to maintain a healthy immune system,” says Irwan Hidayat – Director of Sido Muncul, the makers of Tolak Angin.

Tolak Angin originally began as a family recipe, starting as a herbal concoction from its home industry in Yogyakarta. Years later, Rachmat Sulistyo moved to Semarang and started a small factory named Sido Muncul. The first product was Tolak Angin in powder form.

Along with the development of technology in 1992, Tolak Angin was produced in liquid form which is more practical for consumption than its original form. The new formulation also tastes better, with its hint of honey and mint flavors. Now, Sido Muncul is the largest herbal company in Indonesia with over 300 products in the market – all of which use home-grown ingredients from their partner farms to ensure efficacy and quality.

Sido Muncul maintains pharmaceutical (GMP) standards to make sure Tolak Angin is safe to drink and, most importantly, effective.

Every batch of production goes through a series of tests to make sure Tolak Angin is free from aflatoxin, microbial contamination, heavy metal, fertilizers, and pesticides.  It also undergoes DNA tests to make sure it is Halal.

TOLAK ANGIN IN THE PHILIPPINES SINCE 2018

Tolak Angin was introduced to the Philippines in 2018 with Kris Aquino and Manny Pacquiao as endorsers.

“Tolak Angin fits with the Filipino people because of our humble beginnings. We are a small company that later expanded due to our passion and dedication. The core of Tolak Angin is to give our consumers good health because we know how important it is to the family. Without good health, we cannot help our family.   This is why Tolak Angin is important,” Hidayat said.

He added, “Since the pandemic started, Filipinos have been more conscious about keeping themselves healthy. They are looking for products that can boost their overall health, and they ideally want these products to be all-natural. Tolak Angin provides these qualities that they look for in a herbal supplement.”

The Filipinos are known for being resilient in the face of adversities – be they physical or environmental. But resiliency isn’t always enough; you will need support to continue providing for your family and yourself.

Tolak Angin is also family-friendly, with several variants such as the Tolak Angin Anak liquid herbal supplements for kids and the Tolak Angin Care Essential Aromatherapy Oil roll-on with ginger and mint oil that would suit the needs of every member of the family.

Tolak Angin products are available in drug stores nationwide.

DICT, Huawei mark ICT month with workshop on emerging technology

In celebration of this year's National ICT Month, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with Huawei Philippines, began a series of workshops on emerging technologies to empower Filipinos and boost the readiness of government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and the academe for the adoption of 5G technology in the country.

The "Emerging Technology Workshop – 5G ASEAN Landscape," held online on June 25, gathered a hundred participants from key government agencies, including the DICT, the National Economic and Development Authority, the National Telecommunications Commission, and the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, as well as from LGUs and universities, such as the Bulacan State University.

Speakers were from Huawei Digital Transformation and Business Module Innovation and 5G Solution department. Both speakers and participants engaged in an interactive discussion on 5G-related technology standards and business models, 5G trends, and 5G applications in various industries in the Philippines.

In his speech during the online workshop, DICT Assistant Secretary Atty. Alvin Navarro highlighted how 5G has become a crucial technology for global socio-economic development. "5G-centric innovative ICT technologies are being applied to various industries and sectors to accelerate the development of the economy," he said.

Asec. Navarro added that as the Philippines is on the cusp of the digital economy, "we really have to upgrade what we know and the tools that we use." For this reason, he commended Huawei Philippines for conducting the 5G seminar workshop and offering the workshop series in collaboration with the DICT. The workshop covered "5G examples tied to government policies and initiatives as well as the 5G job roles and competencies that will support its deployment."

Huawei Philippines Vice President Daniel Guo expressed support for the DICT's goal of making the country an inclusive digital Philippines. Guo thanked the DICT and the ICT Literacy and Competency Development Bureau "for making the event possible and for mounting a very successful ICT Month."

"DICT's theme 'Onwards Through ICT: Building a Stronger Philippine Digital Economy' is very much in line with Huawei's advocacy of promoting industry development by strengthening the knowledge and expertise of partners and customers," Guo said, adding that the partnership between the DICT and Huawei will help the Philippine ICT sector to develop more sustainably.

The 5G ASEAN Landscape workshop is the first out of six seminar workshops that the DICT and Huawei will jointly host to equip participants with knowledge of new technologies needed to advance in the global digital economy.

For the upcoming events, the workshops will cover timely topics such as the digital economy and industry innovation, security insights, big data and artificial intelligence, and cloud-based services, among others.

Durex strengthens PPE campaign to help address STI and HIV incidence in the Philippines

With over a year in lockdown, we find ourselves still in the midst of the pandemic, cautious yet with a glint of optimism with the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. Raising awareness of safe sex and sexually-transmitted diseases has become more relevant as the Philippines currently records 29 cases per day as of January 2021 according to the Department of Health (DOH). The agency has tagged HIV as a continuing public threat and has called for the continued cooperation and collaboration of all local communities, civil society organizations, key stakeholders, and the government in jointly addressing this pressing matter.

As part of its mission to protect Filipinos from the threats of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDS, Durex continues to promote the importance of using proper protection during sexual intercourse through education and awareness programs. Durex carries on with its own impactful initiatives under its Protection and Preparedness Education (PPE) campaign.

Remaining as steadfast and driven as ever this 2021—despite the lingering challenges—Durex pursues its advocacy of raising awareness on the importance of condom use as means to help stop the HIV epidemic and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the country.

“During these times, we cannot afford to let our guard down,” says Matt Davis, Reckitt Philippines Marketing Director. “Just as COVID-19 remains to be of critical importance, so too are STIs and HIV. Durex will continue to do our share as a proactive private sector partner in building awareness and educating the public on the importance of protection.”

Thus, Durex will be continuing its donations to organizations including Love Yourself with which the brand has an ongoing full-year partnership, and the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), The Red Whistle, and the United Nation (UN) Women.

This Pride Month, Durex is one with the LGBTQ+ community in expressing and exploring their sex, sexuality, and gender identity with the ‘Wide open to love’ campaign. The campaign is aimed at empowering everyone to accept and celebrate their most authentic self while recognizing that the continuing HIV epidemic will end by using protection so that people can truly express their most authentic self. World Vision highlights child protection and peacebuilding in the Marawi Week of Peace

Child-focused NGO World Vision Development Foundation conducted a series of child protection and peace-building activities during the celebration of the Marawi Week of Peace, spearheaded by the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

World Vision provided school bags, notebooks and pens with learning materials promoting child protection to at least 1,679 students from five public schools.

In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), the Ministry of Basic Higher Technical and Madaris Education and the Marawi Operation Center, World Vision also conducted mental health and psychosocial support activities for 90 parents and 60 children.

Rommel V. Fuerte, World Vision’s National Director in the Philippines shared, “It has been a great honor for us to work with TFBM, the city government of Marawi, and all government agencies and partners towards building back a better Marawi, where children can thrive and fulfill their dreams”. Fuerte encouraged everyone to achieve hope, joy, and justice for all children.

To help families augment their daily food needs, promote nutrition, and maintain good health especially of children, World Vision also distributed 400 packs of vegetable seeds such as eggplant, pechay, okra, and string beans to supported barangays.

Handwashing facilities were also constructed in five World Vision-assisted communities, including one that was launched opened during the Week of Peace in an effort to also fight the COVID-19 pandemic through access to water and hygiene facilities.

It has been four years since World Vision started its emergency and recovery response and other child-focused programs to complement the government’s efforts and assist thousands of affected civilians and displaced families in the aftermath of the violent city-wide armed clash which massively devastated Marawi in May 2017.

World Vision, globally, also observes the United Nations’ World Refugee Day to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries or displaced internally, to escape conflict for safety and protection. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.

Currently, World Vision implements two projects namely the Urban Child Protection Project and the Marawi Peace and Protection Project-Phase which promotes peacebuilding among the youth, education, child protection in schools and the communities among others. Both projects aim to cover a total of 12 barangays with 6,800 children as target beneficiaries.
