OPPO teams up with EU Telco Operators For The Eco Rating Initiative To Raise Awareness on Environmental Sustainability

The leading global smart device brand OPPO takes a new step towards its mission of “Technology for mankind. Kindness for the world” by being one of the first smart device companies to join leading telecommunication operators in Europe in a new Eco-Rating labeling scheme in hopes of creating a more sustainable future. Starting from June 2021, this scheme will roll out across Europe to help consumers identify and compare the most sustainable smartphones.

Created jointly by five of Europe’s leading mobile operators, respectively Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, Telia Company, and Vodafone, the Eco Rating initiative aims to provide truthful and accurate information regarding the environmental impact of the production, usage, transportation, and disposal of smartphones and feature phones.

As one of the first participants, OPPO contributed data and insights to help the Eco Rating come up with a just, objective, and consistent method of evaluating smartphones. Composed of 19 different criteria, the rating system demonstrates the environmental performance of the device across its entire life cycle, focusing on durability, repairability, recyclability, climate efficiency, and resource efficiency. With a maximum score of 100, the overall Eco Rating score is then accurately labelled onto the device for prospective buyers.
Besides collaborating with industry partners, OPPO holds itself responsible for building a more sustainable world and takes other initiatives to create a better future for everyone. The company now adopts more sustainable production processes, spanning from designing, packaging, upgrading to material processing and more, and since 2020, has been seeing positive results for its efforts. Compared to 2019, OPPO recycled 13 times more products by weight in 2020. Moreover, OPPO has been moving towards the use of sustainable materials, with their product packaging being 45% renewable fibres. Meanwhile, OPPO also reduced 42.7% of its general waste and 20% indirect greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.

When it comes to making meaningful and lasting impacts on sustainability, OPPO strengthens its commitment to contribute more to environment protection as it fulfills its mission of bringing kindness to the world.
