Keeping Up with the Lopezes: Here’s how the Lopez family lives a healthier, better life with Santé

“With the mobility limitations brought by the pandemic, it was challenging for everyone to stay active. However, we delivered packed foods to frontliners at the hospitals and checkpoints using our bikes. As we helped and gave back to the community, it became an exercise routine for the family,” Papa Louie shared.

Ever since, the family has been health enthusiasts, doing different kinds of sports and physical activities. But more than the benefit to them, they equally see it as their mission to tap more. “Biking is not just a sport for us. It is our advocacy. Because it is a male-dominated sport, we want to encourage more women to participate in it,” Alou shared.

UBX introduces startup mixer; zeroes in on collaboration, building alliances

UBX, the leading open finance platform in the Philippines, has mounted its first regular mixer event, bringing in founders, industry players, venture capitalists, and investors together in a bid to hasten the development of the local startup scene.

Called the UBX Lounge 48 Mixer, UBX organizes the quarterly social gathering together with communities and organizations like JCI Manila, Alike Community, and Fintech Alliance to allow startups to meet, collaborate, and exchange ideas and initiatives over good food and drinks.

“The key to getting through the ever changing business landscape globally is to be open and to collaborate. We are all part of one ecosystem that supports each other. It is important that we continuously engage and collaborate with the community,” UBX President John Januszczak said.

UBX invited several speakers to the first UBX Lounge 48 Mixer, including former Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Gary B. Teves and Gobi-Core Philippine Fund Founding Partner Carlo Delantar.

Teves discussed how alliances are key to succeed in the local startup scene, given the delays in the implementation of key laws and policies that support the development of startups.

He also underscored the need for the Philippines to focus on developing science-based education programs to meet the growing demand for research scientists and engineers — two of the most in-demand posts for startups.

“The bulk of funding in the last two years were focused on three key sectors, e-commerce, fintech, and media tech. We need to further support other important sectors like agritech, edutech, cleantech, and healthtech —- all of which are essential to nation building,” Teves said.

Delantar, on the other hand, talked about the funding landscape in the Philippines. Gobi-Core, he said, believes that “the time is ripe for the Philippines to take its place in the world as a key player in the technology sphere.”

"The Philippines is at a critical point for technology innovation. Investments, talent and ecosystem building remains a cornerstone for development. This mixer provided the avenue for the community to meet after over two years of lockdown with a diverse mix of audience represented by government, corporations, NGOs and startups,” Delantar said.

The first UBX Lounge 48 Mixer brought in more than 100 participants across different sectors — from startup founders to venture capitalists, from industry leaders to upstarts.

UBX Managing Director Jaime Garchitorena highlighted the importance of collaboration in the startup community, likening it to how UBX’s open finance framework works.

Open finance entails the collaboration from different players to share permissioned data to build new products, develop existing services, and tailor solutions to the finance-related needs of individuals and organizations.

“As an individual organization, it would take decades to make a difference, but if a vision is pushed by a community — an entire ecosystem — the impact of our collective efforts will be felt at a much faster and more sustainable pace,” Garchitorena said.

FedEx Express and Gawad Kalinga join forces to build safe water systems for eight communities across the Philippines

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. and one of the world's largest express transportation companies recently awarded US$50,000 to Gawad Kalinga, a local non-profit, as part of its Priority Earth Global Grant Program. This fund will go toward installing safer water systems to help improve the quality of life of over 3,000 Filipinos from eight disadvantaged communities across the country.

To mark the celebration, FedEx conducted a virtual launch event on June 14th where volunteers showed their support to the communities by conducting a webinar introducing hydroponics, a simple method of growing vegetables in water, to help the communities maximize the new water source and help strengthen their food security.

One of the beneficiaries of the grant is a small community in Talakag, Bukidnon, with more than 30 families residing in it. “We are grateful to finally have a water tank system in our community. This project has changed our lives for the better, not only does it provide us with clean drinking water but also comfort and security for our families,” shared Datu Sabunotan, the community leader of the Talaandig tribe. “We will make sure to maintain the water tank system as we pass it on to future generations of our community," continued Datu Sabunotan.

“Giving back is part of our FedEx culture. Around the world, we are doing our part in improving lives and communities. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film, ELVIS is set to arrive on all digital music platforms this June 24, 2022 (Friday) via RCA Records/Sony Music.

Aside from the classic Presley cuts originally recorded by the rock superstar, the compilation will also feature previously released tracks by Doja Cat, Eminem, and Måneskin, as well as reimagined versions by Tame Impala, Jazmine Sullivan, Swae Lee & Diplo, Kacey Musgraves, and more.

Austin Butler, the American actor who plays the titular role, contributes four tracks in the soundtrack, including “Trouble,” a remake of Presley’s bluesy 1958 smash.

Other prominent songs highlighted in the OST include Måneskin’s version of Elvis Presley ’s “If I Can Dream,” Eminem and CeeLo Green’s collaborative track “The King and I,” Swae Lee and Diplo’s recently dropped tune “Tupelo Shuffle,” and Doja Cat’s Billboard Hot 100 hit “Vegas,” whose extravagant and colorful visuals earned widespread acclaim from critics and fans.

ELVIS is an epic, big-screen spectacle from visionary filmmaker Baz Luhrmann that explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).

The soundtrack features Elvis’s extraordinary body of work spanning the 1950s, `60s and `70s, while also celebrating his diverse musical influences and enduring impact on popular artists today.

Ben&Ben wades through a bad breakup on angsty rock anthem “Langyang Pag-ibig”

The song articulates one’s feelings of being betrayed in all its aching messiness and honesty

Ben&Ben chronicles the inevitable disintegration of a romantic relationship on “Langyang Pag-ibig,” their latest single under Sony Music Philippines.

Witnessing how a burning love ultimately ends up in a disaster, the nine-piece Filipino collective writes a song that wades through a bad breakup with the stinging anger of someone struggling to put their life back on track.

Arranged with classic rock bigness and percussive elements, the song packs a devastating punch with a chorus that articulates one’s feelings of being betrayed.

“It's the song where we flexed our musicality the most,” says the acclaimed band. “It's three songs in one song, but it still sounds like one song.”

“Langyang Pag-ibig” is recorded at Spryta Studios, the same place where Ben&Ben recorded the entirety of their multi-platinum debut album, Limasawa Street. It was produced by Ben&Ben and Jean Paul Verona, mixed by Sam Marquez and Verona, and mastered by Leon Zervos.

“We’ve always wanted to make a song with this vibe, and we think the songwriting in itself begged for it,” shares the chart-topping folk-pop group in a statement. “It helped that Jean Paul and Sam were very familiar with the vibe we were going for and that helped create the general mood and sound we wanted for Langyang Pag-ibig.”

According to the band, “Langyang Pag-ibig” was approached in the familiar way their songs were recorded. They jammed it first a couple of times, and arranged it together slowly as if building a house of cards. “We also balanced elements and see how high we could take the themes,” adds the band.
