AFFI : Franchising contributes 5% to GDP

“The Philippines is now the leading Asian tiger economy that is beating China's growth in franchising. With a high success rate, franchising has continued to build more successful entrepreneurs,” says Armando “Butz” Bartolome, president and founding member of the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. (AFFI).

The Philippine franchising sector remains robust with a 17 percent growth from US$9.4 billion in 2010, to US$11 billion in sales in 2011.

Based on a University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) report, franchising has accounted for five percent of the country’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Organized in 1997, AFFI is the country’s premier trade organization committed to promoting responsible micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through franchising.  AFFI prides itself as developer of successful homegrown franchises such as Goto King, Figaro, Lotsa Pizza, Mang Inasal; among others, which now employ thousands of Filipinos.
To further promote Philippine franchises and offer the public new perspectives and opportunities in franchising, AFFI is mounting the 11th Filipino Franchise Show on Oct. 12-14, at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. Dubbed “Galing ng Pinoy,” the franchise show will showcase 300 exhibitors and franchise investment opportunities from food, retail, and service industries.

“Franchising has created an estimated 200,000 franchise outlets with an average of four to five employees per outlet. That translates to at least a million of job opportunities for Filipinos nationwide,” adds Bartolome.

While the UA&P study revealed that a bulk of franchises are located in the  National Capital Region, the Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions in Luzon are not far behind. Region VII or Western Visayas and Region X or Northern Mindanao top the list in the Vis-Min areas.

The franchising sector’s contribution to countryside development cannot be dismissed, according to Bartolome. “Aside from opportunity creation, employment generation and country development, the franchising sector is a prime mover of MSME development.

Among AFFI’s programs which spurred MSME growth include lectures and seminars on up to date research and development, educational training, participation in local and international trade shows, and opportunities for networking.

“Philippine franchising is now fourth in the world and the leader in the ASEAN region in terms of the number of franchise concepts and franchise outlets. We hope to sustain its phenomenal growth by helping franchises become globally competitive,” says Bartolome.

Referred to as the “sunshine industry”, the franchise industry has churned millions of dollars in investments; some brands succeeding overseas and becoming the country’s global ambassadors.

Homemade food still best for tots, says Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan

Many busy moms nowadays have no time to prepare nutritious baby food. But when opting for store-bought bottled food, moms are not assured of the freshness and quality of these mixes, and that is why homemade food are still the better choice, says mother of five and Philips Avent brand ambassador, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan.
I am very particular when it comes to feeding my children. While there are many respectable brands of bottled baby food in the market, I still believe that nothing compares to homemade food that has been greatly thought out and considered for baby’s particular needs,” Maricel explains.

Me-Ann Achacoso, Philips Avent’s Business Development Manager for Health and Wellness, agrees. “The modern Filipina mom is hands-on and busy. That’s why Philips Avent’s Combined Steamer and Blender is the perfect ally for moms who want to ensure that their baby gets only the freshest and most nutritious food without having to sacrifice time in food preparation,” says Ms. Achacoso.

Ms. Achacoso adds that the Philips Avent Combined Steamer and Blender lets moms craft quick and healthy meals for baby. Its built-in steamer helps lock in food’s nutrients and natural flavors and with the flip of the steamer and blender, moms can instantly make fine purees to soft and small pieces of food that baby can consume for the different stages of weaning.

She adds that if moms don’t have time to prepare food, they can choose to make this ahead of time by storing the pre-made meals into Philips Avent’s Via Cups range which are ideal for storage in the refrigerator or freezer.

Ms. Achacoso concludes,

“Creating your own baby food with the Combined Steamer and Blender promotes a healthy bond between parents, siblings and baby. You are also assured that you are giving your baby meals that contain natural vitamins and minerals without the harmful chemicals.”

Jonalyn Viray holds concert in Abu Dhabi, October 11

Kapuso Soul Princess Jonalyn Viray is all set for her major concert abroad happening on Thursday, October 11, at the India Social and Cultural Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The powerful belter, who is a mainstay in the Sunday musical variety show on GMA-7 “Party Pilipinas,” says she is very excited to visit the city for the first time and perform in front of fellow Filipinos working there.
Jonalyn sets both of her hands on everything that concerns her concert.  In fact, she is very much involved not only in preparing the lineup of songs but also in the arrangement of the music and the overall production of the show.
“Special sa akin ang concert na ito dahil hindi lang ako aappear at kakanta sa stage.  Masaya rin ako na nakakapag-contribute ako ng ideas para mas mapaganda pa ito at para ma-enjoy ng lahat ng mga manonood.  It adds to my fulfillment as an artist,” she shares.
Most of the songs Jonalyn has lined up for the concert are pop ballads with a couple of medleys of songs that are popular among Filipinos in Abu Dhabi.
“Of course hindi mawawala yung signature styles na nilalagay ko sa mga song; yun kasi ang hinahanap nila.  “Basta ang gusto kong mangyari ay ma-inspire at mag-enjoy silang lahat sa concert."
Although she has performed countless times both as a solo artist and as member of the all-female group “La Diva,” Jonalyn still gets nervous every time she is about to perform before a huge audience.
“Ninenyerbyos din ako so talagang todo ang preparation na ginagawa ko for my concert. I’m taking voice lessons and doing some physical activities like running.  I also research about certain restrictions in Abu Dhabi pagdating sa pananamit, kasi like last year, nung nagperform kami sa Dubai, may mga bawal. So mas mabuti na prepared," she says.
The concert, entitled “Soul Princess Jonalyn Viray Live in Adu Dhabi,” is presented by Glamorous Events in cooperation with United Filipino Artists of UAE and Flair Events.
Tickets may be purchased at branches of the Philippine House Restaurant, Goto King and Tipar Bar and are also available in the following stores: Panaderia, Binalot, Oriental Korner, Mickey's Restaurant, Eraser Heads Salon, Greenhouse Filipino Grocery Airport Road, Pinoy Golden, Cebu Restaurant.
VIP tickets are sold at 120dhs and 60dhs for General Admission. For more information and inquiries contact 056-2910302 / 055-5452473 / 056-2367555. (30)
