Tesoros promotes aspiring and inspiring local artisans through “Disenyo at Talento” series at Casa San Pablo Clay Storytellers

Tesoros brings out the best that the Filipino can do as Tesoro's helped in the evolution of our nation’s identity, our sense of nationhood for in our stores are the products of our people.

Tesoro’s has helped preserve our country's indigenous art-forms, as we learned new skills from our colonizers and made it our own. Tesoro showcase these crafts of embroidery, fiber and woodworks, features in Tesoro's stores are the images that resonate with “Filipino-ness.”

Casa San Pablo Clay Storytellers featured during initial salvo

The arts have been known as the greatest representations of society’s culture and traditions – from traditional to the contemporary; not just the heritage but also the modern. Showcasing aspiring and inspiring craftsmen who reflect the fine Hispano-Asian legacy of the Philippines through various works of art, Tesoro’s, the provider of quality local treasures, has launched the event series “Disenyo At Talento.”

“Our country is blessed with so many great artists,” pronounced the Group CEO of Tesoro’s, Maria Isabel “Beng” Tesoro. “Being one of the leading promoters of our local talents, we thought to launch ‘Disenyo at Talento’ to shed light on both Filipino craftsmanship and the constantly thriving art scene in the country,” she added.

For the first salvo, the store has featured the Casa San Pablo Clay Storytellers, crafted by former corporate publishing executive-turned-clay artisan An Mercado Alcantara. To formalize the start of the series, a ribbon-cutting has been conducted by Department of Tourism Regional Director Rebecca Labit and President of Philippine Tour Operators Association Cesar Cruz.

“My creations are mostly inspired by the culture and the people of my husband’s birthplace San Pablo, Laguna – a place I have fallen in love with,” shared An. Her favorite subjects include the Virgin Mary in several incarnations, including Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Lipa, and Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba. She surrounds these main subjects with storytellers and tablets featuring festive processions and villagers.

An’s friends and growing number of clients admire the positivity that Casa San Pablo dolls have always radiated. Asked about the secret behind the beauty and expressiveness of her storyteller dolls, An said, “My hands are my main tools. Although I have clay shapers and precision dentist’s tools – I asked a dentist friend to buy me a set – there’s nothing like our palms and fingers to get the shape we want.”

These hand-pinched and hand-painted terracotta dolls are regularly available at Casa San Pablo,a bed and breakfast in a still genteel family compound in San Pablo City run by An and her husband, art collector and hobby enthusiast Boots Alcantara. Casa San Pablo is also known a creativity hub, where people can come to re-charge and rekindle their imagination.

Part of the total sales from Casa San Pablo Clay Story Tellers at the “Disenyo At Talento” event series will be donated to San Francisco Terraces Orphanage, one of two orphanages under the auspices of the San Pablo City government's DSWD office. “We chose this organization because our clay works celebrate the special bond between storytellers and children. We hope to help feed their bodies and their minds with food and stories that will, hopefully, help them experience a better world,” shared An.

The institution houses 32 orphans, at least 5 of whom are mentally challenged. Many of these children are survivors of abuse, parental neglect or family abandonment.

All of the orphans share only 2 rooms and 2 toilets in a house that is in dire need of repair. The government’s financial monthly subsidy for the institution is currently not enough to cover the subsistence of these children.

From Tesoro’s Makati branch, the Casa San Pablo Clay Storytellers will be available across all Tesoro’s outlets nationwide starting June 2015.

“By including the works of the chosen local artists in our stores, we hope that more and more people can appreciate the genuine creativity of Filipinos.

It is also rewarding that this event allows us and the artists to reach out to our friends in need through art for a cause,” said Beng Tesoro.

DTV Phones: A New Take on Pinoy TV Viewing

The technology and versatility of DTV phones mark a new era in Philippine mobile functionality. Starmobile has always put the wants and needs of Pinoy mobile users first, and digital TV phones would fit well into the modern and very mobile lifestyle of today’s Filipinos.

With its souped-up line of DTV devices, Starmobile is set to affect the industry and influence the future of mobile.

Crisper, high-quality video means more emphasis on great artistry.

Any advances in the quality of video the average viewer can watch have called for the industry to update the way they do things, from the makeup techniques used on actors to visual effects achieved through filming or production.

Mobile viewing makes TV a solo affair.

Because you can now watch your favorite TV channels on your mobile through Starmobile, it means you don’t have to fight for control of the remote control whenever your favorite show is on air.

Digital recording spreads viewing times out.

Primetime may not be prime any longer as real-time recording functions on Starmobile digital TV phones mean that you can wait until later in the evening or even another day entirely before you watch a TV show you’ve been meaning to catch.

That frees up your social life so you don’t have to make the decision between finding out what happens on the season finale of your favorite show and meeting your barkada for dinner.

‘Anytime, anywhere’ means quality TV programming can and should be 24/7.

If you’re channel surfing in the wee hours of the morning these days, you’ll often find channels replaying old (sometimes very, very old) episodes of their shows. But with the Starmobile DTV phones, now you can watch your shows in bed even without a TV in your room, and you can record shows you might not be able to watch when they air.

This sense of easy access means that smaller channels may want to capitalize on bigger channels’ “dead times” and air new content across the region, or top-level TV channels may want to invest in more new shows as the need for reruns will eventually become pretty much defunct. And more shows just mean more TV fun, right?

Even if you’re not a TV addict, you’ll still get a lot of use out of your digital TV phone. Gamers will love the responsiveness of the system as well as the HD screen, something people who download a lot of videos will get a kick out of, too, apart from the huge memory available for use.

Instagrammers and photo-foodies will appreciate the great cameras these come equipped with, as will folks who like to capture moments in time via video (like parents and travel junkies).

The UP Vision and the KNIGHT Vision are now available in Starmobile Stores and Kiosks nationwide while the UP Max will be available beginning the second week of June.

June is “No Smoking Month”, Doctors urge medical intervention and support in curbing smoking

Cigarette smoking is a major public health problem globally. According to the WHO, smoking is the second most important cause of death worldwide and is currently responsible for 5 million death each year. There are three billion cigarette smokers worldwide of which 112 million are in India. Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause 800,000 deaths annually in India. The WHO predicts that tobacco deaths in India may exceed 1.5 million annually by 2020.

Filipino health professionals and medical organizations, along with the private healthcare sector, are underscoring the importance of medical intervention and support in the form of more prevalent and accessible smoking cessation clinics, in order to successfully help more smokers kick the deadly habit.

The call is made to kick off the commemoration of the Philippines “No Smoking Month” in June.

At a press conference held at the Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP), doctor groups highlighted the vital role that smoking cessation clinics play in creating strong community support for patients who wish to quit.

Smoking is an addiction that takes more than just simple willpower to successfully abandon, according to Dr. Anthony Leachon, immediate past president of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP).

Dr. Leachon explains:
“Ineptitude is the inability to do what is right despite knowledge and education. We are all aware that despite knowing that smoking is bad, and that it has adverse health effects, a lot of our countrymen still continue to smoke, or are unable to quit.”

According to data from the 2013 National Nutrition and Health Survey (NNHeS), smoking prevalence among the current smokers has dropped to 25.4 percent of the population from 31 percent in 2008.

With the achievements of the government in the implementation of 100% smoke-free environments and the sin tax law to discourage tobacco consumers, “we have proven that all educational drives would be best complemented by an aspect of shaping the smokers’ environment,” explains Dr. Leachon.

This is where smoking cessation clinics come into the picture. Such facilities are especially designed and designated to receive patients who wish to finally quit smoking.

Dedicated health professionals manning the clinic guide patients step by step, from initial case assessment to drawing up and observing a strict behavioral plan on quitting.

Most importantly, programs in smoking cessation clinics also include valuable pharmacological intervention, or medical solutions in order to address the physiological aspects of smoking.

Smokers getting younger. Dr. Glynna Ong Cabrera (right) of the Lung Center of the Philippines presents the case of fourteen-year-old patient AJ (seated, left) at a press conference commemorating Philippine “No Smoking Month” this June. The student successfully kicked the deadly habit of smoking with the help of the hospital’s smoking cessation clinic. Doctor groups and the private healthcare sector are urging medical intervention and support in curbing smoking addiction, primarily through the development of more smoking cessation clinics across the country. Representing the multi-sectoral anti-smoking cause are (from left) Pfizer Philippines public affairs director Gerrard Anthony Paez, Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) president Dr. Eric Moral, Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) president Dr. Mariano Lopez, and Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP) executive director Dr. Maricar Limpin.

A serious health concern in the Philippines

Many smokers who seek help are those who are already suffering from ailments and diseases related to the habit.

“Most of the time, not until the smoker starts experiencing the health consequences of smoking does he or she realize it is a medical issue that needs to be addressed,” explains Dr. Glynna Ong Cabrera, who heads the smoking cessation clinic at the LCP.

Smoking causes cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke; diabetes; malignancies or cancer; and chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma. These noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide and in the Philippines.

Among the identified risk factors contributing to NCDs, tobacco is considered responsible for more than two-thirds of lung cancer; 40 percent of chronic respiratory diseases; and 10 percent of cardiovascular diseases. An estimated six million people die from tobacco use each year. In the country, it kills ten Filipinos every hour.

Overcoming challenges to continuous progress

The call for the establishment of smoking cessation clinics is in line with the findings of the 2011 assessment of the government’s efforts under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO–FCTC).

“The country has, for its part, made substantial strides and achievements, most important of which is the passing and implementation of the sin tax law, the restriction of tobacco advertising and promotion, as well as the application of strong graphic warnings on tobacco products,” says Dr. Maricar Limpin, executive director of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP).

Many local government units have also made great progress in passing smoke-free ordinances that prohibit smoking indoors and in public places, notes Dr. Limpin.

However, among the significant challenges in the Philippines that the assessment team identified include the need for a coordinated national cessation infrastructure across the country, in order to effectively implement the national cessation policy.

Alongside the DOH’s program focusing on smoking cessation in government hospitals in the Philippines, the PCP is similarly pushing for mandate among its member hospitals to establish smoking cessation centers.

“With this move, we are optimistic in helping bring down the smoking population in the Philippines, as well as reduce the burden of disease,” concludes Dr. Leachon.
The private sector of the medical and pharmaceutical industry is also backing the drive against smoking cessation in the country. “For our part, Pfizer Philippines strongly supports the nationwide campaign against the habit of smoking in line with our ultimate goals of improving health and well-being at every stage of life,” states corporate affairs director Gerrard Anthony Paez.

Save money and save Mother Earth by saving energy with Sharp

The rising cost of living these days demands that we look for ways to consume less energy to save up on electric bills. Global warming, a concern on a much bigger scale, implores us to use energy-efficient technology to lessen our carbon footprint.

There are several things in our lifestyles that we can change to save energy – and all of them are quite simple and easy to implement.

One tried and tested way to save energy is to unplug all electronic device when not in use. Turning them off but keeping them plugged consumes “phantom load” which means these devices still consume energy even when you’re not using them.

Another energy-saving tactic is to change your light bulbs with more energy-efficient kinds like LED. They may cost more to buy, but they last at least ten times longer and consume about 75% less energy compared to usual light bulbs. Simple habits like making sure your refrigerator door can save you loads of energy. Placing your refrigerator and air conditioner in strategic areas in the room – away from heat-generating devices at all costs – can also save your appliances from working too hard and therefore consuming more electricity than normal.

Upgrading your old appliances to energy-efficient ones is also a fantastic way to save energy. Old appliances always consume a lot of energy compared to their newer counterparts.

If you’re looking to upgrade to save on energy, reduce electricity consumption, and save the environment, look no further than Sharp Philippines’ lineup of J-Tech Inverter Refrigerator and Split-Type Air Conditioner.

With its 32-step Smart Inverter Technology, J-Tech Inverter Refrigerator provides energy savings by up to 40 percent, with a precise temperature control to help protect stored food and preserve it for longer periods.

With its non-CFC refrigerant, Sharp J-Tech Inverter refrigerators also help protect the ozone layer against harmful emissions. Aside from its J-Tech Inverter technology, this refrigerator also offers other convenient features like the Ag+ Nano deodorizer for a nearly odor-free interior, powerful freezing capability for efficient ice-making, a 2-Way Fresh Room with 29-liter capacity and Rapid Cooling Room, a huge 17-liter Vegetable Room, big door pockets to store more beverage bottles, and a low-vibration compressor for quiet operation.

The Sharp J-Tech Inverter Air Conditioner, on the other hand, provides convenient and energy-efficient operation with up to 60 percent in energy savings. Aiza Seguerra with “Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maestro Ryan”

Aiza Seguerra pays tribute to Maestro Ryan Cayabyab in new album entitled “Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maestry Ryan.”

Sometime years ago, Universal Records has gathered the biggest rock acts to pay tribute to the APO Hiking Society in the album “Kami NApo Muna.”

This was followed by Ogie Alcasid’s tribute to George Canseco (“Ngayon At Kailanman”) and Christian Bautista’s tribute to Jose Mari Chan (“Romance Revisited”).

And now, her first album under Universal Records, Aiza Seguerra pays tribute to Maestro Ryan Cayabyab in the album “Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maesto Ryan.”

The album, composed of some of the most-loved Ryan Cayabyab compositions, also features Mr. C playing the piano for the first single “Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka.”

“Napaka-special ng album nito kasi binigyan ko ng sarili kong take ang pinakasikat na compositions ni Mr. Ryan Cayabyab,” says Aiza. “Ang sarap ka-trabaho niya kasi maski Maestro na siya, he listens to my inputs.”

Aiza also shares that the people working on the album prefer the execution to be very “organic.”

When asked about some of the realizations the singer had during the recording of the album, Aiza shared, “his songs are very familiar, but if you get technical about it, like when you are already recording, ang hirap pala kasi komplikado ang mga notes niya.”

The album also includes “Araw Gabi,” “Minsan Ang Minahal Ay Ako,” “Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika,” “Kahit Ika’y Isang Panaginip Lamang,” “Paano Na Kaya,” “Tunay Na Ligaya,” “Iduyan Mo,” among others.

Epson Leads Dot Matrix printers and Point-of-Sale (POS) categories

Epson Philippines Corporation (EPC) known for producing premium printing and visual communications products and services.

Epson  extends the company's winning streak in the category of Dot Matrix printers and Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.

Based on Epson's internal data, Epson remains as the world's leader in the dot matrix impact printer category and is still the undisputed leader in the country. The Epson brand continues to be the brand of choice in the Philippines for the past 17 years - holding an outstanding 96% market share in this category.

Dot matrix printing is a type of computer printing which uses an impact print head that strikes the paper surface. It is an established means of creating prints coated with microencapsulated ink on its reverse side, or sandwiched with carbon paper. This single-pass process is able to produce multiple copies, and offers an economical alternative to other printing technologies if a full-color output is not required.

Another area that Epson excels in is the POS systems category. Epson's POS printers continue to be the leading brand in the Philippines for the sixth year in a row. POS printers are the thermal modules (TM) typically used by retail and service-oriented industries for printing receipts. They are specifically designed for speed, accuracy, and cost efficiency with the aim of reducing capital investment and facilitating faster customer turnaround time.

Offering future-ready POS solutions, Epson's Intelligent Business Solutions are designed for easy integration and optimization. The company's Intelligent Series Printers are built to be scalable to suit the needs of businesses of any size, providing a variety of intelligent functions delivered by compact, space-saving printers.

One such intelligent solutions printer is the Epson TM-P20 mobile POS printer. Its compact and rugged design disguises a fast print speed of up to 100mrn/sec, while the best-in-c1ass operational battery life, fast Near Field Communication (NFC) pairing, and a versatile compatibility with multiple smart devices make it ideally suited for on-the-go printing.

Thea Austria, Product Manager for POS systems

"Technology is an ever-changing landscape and we constantly see companies using obsolete systems simply because of the rost and effort it would take to constantly overhaul their Point-of-Sale (POS) systems," says Thea Austria, Product Manager for POS systems.

"Our new Intelligent Series ensures that the system can grow with the business and adapt with the changing times, making it an essential tool for our partners."

Teachers laud first Tboli SHS TSHS seen to promote global competence and cultural preservation

Teachers of the recently-launched TSHS at Lake Sebu, South Cotabato said that this program will surely promote global competitiveness without compromising the cultural preservation of the indigenous peoples in the long run.

The teachers perceived the program as a beneficial tool to boost the livelihood status of the Tbloli community since the TSHS offers technical-vocational tracks that are in line with the culture of the Tboli people.

“Ang diwa ng kultura namin ay naisasalin at ang kaalaman ay made-develop pa kung kaya’t ilang henerasyon man ang magdaan, ang kultura namin ay buhay pa rin. Ang kaalaman at ang kasanayan ay nagmula mismo sa kanila [mag-aaral na Tboli] upang matuto na silang makihalubilo sa mundo,” said Benji Manuel, a Tboli teacher at Tboli Senior High School (TSHS).
This project of the Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with Ateneo de Davao, aims to produce graduates who are equipped with entrepreneurial and management skills and are capable of managing and improving their own resources and coming up with sustainable livelihood and opportunities for the Tboli community.

Manuel said that through the program, he now sees the teachers of TSHS as carriers of the plan of the Tboli elders.

“Sa tulong nito, nakikita namin ang aming sarili bilang tagapagdala ng plano ng elders ng pamayanan ng Tboli na dalhin ang indigenous knowledge, cultural and intellectual heritage sa loob ng classroom,” Manuel added.

Ateneo de Davao President Father Joel S. Tabora, SJ said that the Tboli SHS is “the most sophisticated, anthropological, pedagogical project in the country relative to Senior High School”.

"Davao entered into this program--to be able to help the K to 12 create a program that will not make the students foreigners to their own culture, but will make them imbibe the values and the cultural traditions of the tribe even in a global age, even in an age when the Tboli also want to be able to be world-class, to be able to enjoy the advantages of globalization and modernization. The Tboli, it has to be clear, also want first and foremost to preserve their own cultural traditions and their cultural identities. This is the reason why Ateneo de Davao has been really priveleged to be part of this program," Tabora said.

Through the help of Ateneo de Davao, the program commenced through a research wherein they consulted the Tboli community if they would want a program that is appropriate not only to their culture but also to the standards of DepEd. After the research, the Tboli community gave positive feedback, which means that they are willing to have the program being proposed to them.

TSHS will be initially lodged at Lake Sebu National High School and will be catering to approximately 45 students upon the first implementation of Grade 11 this coming school year 2015-2016.

"We are developing ourselves and we are achieving our goals and aspirations but we should not forget our culture. That is our intention," Manuel said.

The right drink for the right reasons

Water has always been my drink of choice. It just makes me feel good. I always tell my kids to drink water if they have a craving, a headache, are constipated, hungry, etc.

Water is so beneficial, so easy, so free yet so easily overlooked. It’s really a no brainer (actually your brain is 90% water!. Your body is about 70% water, the majority of your blood and every cell in your body is composed of water. Therefore, you need water to function properly.

The human body loses at least 2.5 litres of body fluids even without having any strenuous activity or any kind of physical training. We lose this much even on a quiet day at work or at school. Because the body doesn’t stop its bodily functions to keep us going and these body fluids are very important in maintaining proper circulation of the nutrients needed by every part of the body and also in keeping it from overheating.

While physical stress has always been attributed to lost body fluids, mental and emotional stress could also contribute to dehydration. Exposure to hot weather also makes the body perspire greater amounts of fluids just to keep our bodies cool. One might think that we are just losing water from dehydration, but along with these are the minerals and electrolytes that our body needs. Every time we lose these fluids is the time when we should rethink about what we drink.

There are many options out there in the market, but nothing comes close to Pocari Sweat’s safe and trusted formulation. From one of Japan’s most trusted pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies and currently the Philippines’ number one Japanese pharmaceutical company, Otsuka (Philippines) Pharmaceutical, Inc. (OPPI) has brought Pocari Sweat in the country to bring wellness that doesn’t only make you get better, but also keepyou to be better.

Unlike other electrolyte drinks available in market, Pocari Sweat is still much safer to drink. “It does not contain artificial colouring, preservatives, caffeine and is non-carbonated,” said Janeth M. Leus, OPPI Asst. Brand Manager. “Though the acidity level has been an issue to isotonic drinks which has an erosive effect on the dental enamel, with Pocari Sweat containing vitamin C and other acidic ingredients, its ingredients such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium turn alkaline once metabolized by the body,” Ms. Leus expounds. “Since the volume of these alkaline-forming ingredients contained in Pocari Sweat is greater than the acidic ones, it is classified as an alkaline-promoting beverage.”

There is no particular limit on the amount of Pocari Sweat one can drink, provided that your body is in good condition. To anyone doing their usual work out, training, or other physically strenuous activity, it is best to gauge how much fluid they lost and replace it in small amount of intakes. “But for people who have medical conditions such as diabetes or gastritis, or they are in a sugar or salt-restricted diet due to obesity or high blood pressure, consider your daily limits when drinking Pocari Sweat, because it contains salt and sugar,” Ms. Leus explains. “It is still best to consult your dietician or doctor on when is the best time to drink Pocari Sweat.”

Pocari Sweat right now is seen as another sports drinks that benefits athletes in their hydration needs, but OPPI sees this opportunity to widened its reach and not be limited to just the sports market. “Being far healthier and safer to drink compare to other electrolyte drinks, we see Pocari Sweat, years from now as the #1 Health Hydration Drink here in the Philippines,” Ms. Leus said.” Our formulation is safe to drink everyday even by an ordinary individual who does not have that much physical and strenuous activity to deal with. And yet the need for replenishing body ions is still needed with the right drink.”

“Pocari Sweat provides all the daily hydration needs in a healthy way,” Ms. Leus adds. “And it starts by rethinking your drink.”

Pocari Sweat comes in 330 ml. can, 350 ml. PET bottle, 500 ml. and two-liter PET bottle. Pocari Sweat is available in major chain drugstores, supermarkets and convenience stores.
