Stay safe from phishing attacks as SIM Card Registration Deadline Approaches—Palo Alto Networks

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has clarified that there will be no further extension for SIM card registration in the Philippines. With the July 25, 2023 deadline set by the national government looming, only 60.75 percent of the total 168 million SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards have been registered so far, leaving over 40% of Filipinos at risk of deactivation and social engineering tactics such as phishing. Scammers are taking advantage of the situation, employing SMS messages to lure users into sharing personal information via bogus registration links, posing a persistent and dangerous threat.

The increasing number of unregistered SIM cards exposes users to potential deactivation of their mobile services, disrupting their communication capabilities. Additionally, as the deadline approaches, the risk of phishing attacks intensifies. Cybercriminals exploit SMS messages to deceive unsuspecting victims into divulging sensitive information, such as One-Time Passwords (OTPs), which grant them unauthorized access to accounts.

In a typical phishing attack, scammers will send fraudulent messages claiming to be from legitimate sources, like telecommunications companies, urging recipients to register their SIM cards by clicking on a link provided. Unsuspecting users, driven by fear of deactivation, may fall into the trap and unwittingly share their personal details, enabling cybercriminals to gain control over their accounts and exploit them for financial gain.

Palo Alto Networks shares some of the measures one can take to guard oneself against phishing attacks as the SIM card registration deadline approaches:

Exercise caution when presented with unknown links: Be wary of links received from unfamiliar numbers or sources, especially those claiming to be from your telecom provider. Avoid clicking on suspicious links, as they may lead to fraudulent websites designed to steal your personal information.
Scrutinize links for anomalies: Check for misspellings or unusual URLs in the links provided. Phishers often employ tactics such as using slight variations of genuine domain names to deceive users.
Research official SIM registration procedures: Familiarize yourself with your network provider's legitimate process for SIM registration. This will help you distinguish between genuine communications and phishing attempts.
Stay informed on security measures: Some telecom providers and other organizations, such as banks, proactively block links via SMS to combat phishing attacks. Stay up-to-date with the security measures implemented by your trusted apps or organizations to enhance your protection.
Leverage Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Activating MFA provides an extra layer of security, acting as a vital firewall for your devices during this heightened risk period.

"Phishing attacks will persist as the SIM card registration deadline draws nearer. Cybercriminals' primary goal is to seize control of your number and exploit your OTPs to steal your money," said Steven Scheurmann, Regional VP for ASEAN at Palo Alto Networks. "To stay safe, it's crucial to think before you click and remain vigilant whenever you need to share sensitive information. Embracing the Zero Trust principle and granting the least privilege to your personal data can significantly bolster your defenses against phishing threats."

Mang Inasal is PHL’s most endeared grilled chicken restaurant

Customers have ranked Mang Inasal among the top three restaurants in the country -- the only one in the grilled chicken category. This is according to recent surveys conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia and the RP-Mission and Development (RPMD) Foundation Inc.

Mang Inasal is the second most endeared fast food and restaurant chain in the Philippines, as revealed in PUBLiCUS Asia’s recent PAHAYAG survey. Mang Inasal garnered an endearment score of 31%, next to Jollibee.

Meanwhile, Mang Inasal placed third in a comprehensive nationwide survey conducted by RPMD. Mang Inasal got a 63% rating next to Jollibee and another restaurant brand.

“Being the only grilled chicken restaurant in these lists is a huge honor for Mang Inasal especially because they were from our customers themselves,” said Mang Inasal business unit head Mike V. The PUBLiCUS PAHAYAG is an independent and non-commissioned survey held from June 7 to 12, 2023. It sought to gauge the emotional connection and affinity of 1,500 Filipino consumers towards various Filipino brands in the market.

Meanwhile, the RPMD survey, conducted from June 25 to July 5, 2023, asked 10,000 respondents to identify their favorites based on attributes that included brand preference, visitation frequency, food and service quality, as well as value for money.

The evolution of the Galaxy Tab: How Samsung is pushing the boundaries in the premium tablet market

After Samsung Electronics introduced the Galaxy Tab in 2010, it revolutionized the way we work and play, especially in a world that is increasingly on the go. Thirteen years since the launch of the first Android tablet, Samsung is continuously taking productivity, creativity and entertainment to new heights as the premium standard for tablets with each new Galaxy Tab S series.

Here's how the Galaxy Tab has evolved in eight generations:

It all started when Samsung introduced the world’s first true Android tablet— the Galaxy Tab (7.0), in 2010. It has a compact and excellent build, first available in 7-inch, followed by 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch versions.

Coming off the success of its first tablet, Samsung slimmed down its Galaxy Note 10.1 in 2012. The S Pen was introduced as every Galaxy Tab’s partner in bringing forward multitasking and entertainment features. When removed from its slot, the tablet activates a taskbar with quick access to optimized S Pen apps – a precursor to Air Command, which has features such as setting icons, adding shortcuts and screen write.

It was in 2013 when Samsung unlocked another innovation: the easy-to-hold Galaxy Note 8-inch tablet with Smart Remote features, which allows users to control TVs and Blu-ray/DVD players. The following year, the Galaxy Tab Active came with a fresh design built for tough work, including a waterproof feature and the C Pen, the more durable version of the S Pen which can withstand a 1.2-meter drop with just its protective shell.

It was also in 2014 when Samsung unveiled its first premium line— Galaxy Tab S, available in 10.5-inch and 8.4-inch. It includes a high-end tablet with a Super AMOLED display and Galaxy Gifts, a partnership with 30 top mobile content service providers. Its successor, the Galaxy Tab S2, was released in 2015 to offer people premium and all-new displays with a 4:3 aspect ratio designed for reading articles, e-books, and surfing online content. Plus, it was pre-loaded with Microsoft Office to enhance users' productivity further.

2017 was likewise a worth-noting year with the Galaxy Tab S3 that has a 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display. Samsung included its renowned S Pen in its top-of-the-line tablet range, enabling special functions like PDF Annotation and professional-level drawing. It delivered superior video and gaming experiences, alongside its use as a productivity tool. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Book with its 10.6-inch TFT LCD version and 12-inch Super AMOLED version, delivered professionals enhanced computing power for work and play.

Come 2018, Samsung further powered its premium line with the availability of Samsung DeX on its Galaxy Tab S4, where users could have a PC-like productivity and mobility of a tablet at once. It was also equipped with the 07mm S Pen which provided ease of writing. For an immersive entertainment experience, the tablet boasted a 10.5 Super AMOLED Display, four 1.2W speakers powered by AKG and Dolby Atmos sound technology.

Forwarding its ultra-light specs, Samsung launched its Tab S5e with the thinnest frame in 2019, weighing less than a pound with added features that could control connected devices with SmartThings, from lights and door locks to thermostats. The Galaxy Tab S6 was also released the same year, which sported another huge upgrade with 5G connectivity in early 2020, making it the world’s first 5G tablet.

Samsung redesigned as well the S Pen for more power and control, including a gesture function called S Pen Air actions to take selfies and videos quicker and command multimedia content. Meanwhile, the slim and lightweight modern-style Galaxy Tab S6 Lite launched in May 2020 has a crystal-clear screen that can turn into an expanded desktop workstation and send multiple windows to a Galaxy device of choice.

And in 2021, the Galaxy Tab S7, S7+ and the Galaxy Tab S7 FE entered the lineup with more extensive upgrades. Users can easily sync across Galaxy devices with Samsung Notes for seamless productivity, helping users master multitasking with wireless connectivity on the go. It also has a new “center stage” placement of its camera on a landscape view.

For its latest and most versatile innovation yet, Samsung created the biggest and boldest Galaxy tablets with a whopping 14.6-inch for its Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, 12.4-inch for S8+ and 11-inch for the Galaxy S8 atop the fastest 4nm processor and Armor Aluminum built for a more elegant and lightweight device experiences. ‘Pag ganyan, phishing scam yan!’ Mga panibagong e-wallet phishing scam na kailangang alamin at iwasan

Nito lamang nakaraang linggo, ilang text message o tawag na ang natanggap mo mula sa numerong hindi mo kilala?

Kung dati ay advertisement lang ang laman ng mga ito, kapansin-pansin ang pagdami ng mga kahina-hinalang mensaheng may laman na link at mga taong nagkukunwaring namimigay ng papremyo. Sa dami na ng klase ng online scam na naranasan ng mga Pinoy, libu-libo pa rin ang nagiging biktima nito dahil gumagaling na ring magtago ng katiwalian ang mga scammer.

Sa pagsikat ng e-wallet sa Pilipinas, naging panibagong target ito ng mga scammer para makuha ang impormasyon ng users at magka-access sa kanilang mga account. Sa tinatawag na phishing scam, kadalasan ay nagpapanggap na lehitimong business, website, o empleyado ang scammer para madaling makuha ang lahat ng impormasyon para maka login sa account ng biktima. Kung dati ay sa text o email lang ito nangyayari, ngayon ay ginagawa na rin ito sa social media, tawag, at mga pekeng website.

Para protektahan ang mga users laban sa mga scammer, pinagtibay ng GCash, ang nangungunang e-wallet app, ang mga security features nito. Pinakilala nito ang DoubleSafe Face ID, kung saan bukod OTP at MPIN ay kakailanganin na rin ng selfie para ma-access ang GCash. Sa kabila nito, importante ring alamin ng lahat ng users kung ano ang mga kumakalat na phishing scam at paano ito maiiwasan.

● ‘Magtop-up para sa online gambling’ phishing scam

Patok na patok ngayon ang mga online gambling sites, kaya naman madalas din itong ginagamit ng mga scammer para mambiktima ng mga e-wallet user. Sa phishing scam na ito, ikaw ay dadalhin sa pekeng GCash website kung saan kukunin ang OTP at MPIN mo.

Ang modus:

Pagkatapos gumawa ng account sa pekeng gambling site, ipapalink sa iyo ang GCash account mo para makapag-top up ka. Mapupunta ka sa pekeng GCash website kung saan ipapa-enter sa iyo ang iyong mobile number at MPIN. Makakatanggap ka rin ng text na may kasamang OTP para i-link sa ibang device ang iyong GCash account. Sa oras na maibigay mo ang iyong impormasyon, maari nang maaccess ng mga scammer ang iyong account para nakawin ang iyong pera.

Paano ito maiiwasan:

Kapag pinapa-link ang iyong GCash account, tingnan nang maigi ang URL o pangalan ng link para masiguradong nasa totoong website ka ng GCash. Ang lehitimong GCash website ay nagsisimula sa https:// at nagtatapos ‘gcash.com.’ Sa kabilang banda, ang mga pekeng GCash portal naman ay maaaring may magkasunod na numero sa umpisa, may extra characters o may mali sa spelling (ex. Gccash vs GCash).

Kapag nagrerequest ng OTP para magbayad, basahin din nang mabuti ang text upang makasiguradong hindi mo nai-link sa ibang device ang iyong GCash account. Huwag ishare ang MPIN at OTP sa ibang tao, lalo na sa mga pekeng online gambling sites.

● ‘Nakahold ang account mo’ phishing scam

Sa phishing scam na ito, ang mga scammer ay nagpapanggap na representative ng mga kompanya at nagkukunwaring may emergency para madaliang ibigay ng mga biktima ang kanilang impormasyon.

Ang modus:

Makakatanggap ka ng tawag, text o mensahe sa social media galing sa isang account na nagpapanggap na empleyado ng GCash at sasabihan kang nakafreeze o nakahold ang iyong GCash account. Mag-aalok ito ng tulong upang ma-activate ang account mo, pero hihingin nito ang mobile number, MPIN at OTP mo. Kapag nakuha na nila ang mga mahahalagang impormasyon, maari na nilang buksan ang iyong GCash account at tangayin ang laman nitong pera.

Paano ito maiiwasan:

Hindi kailanman hihingin ng GCash na iactivate ang account mo sa pamamagitan ng tawag, text o chat. Laging alalahanin na lahat ng lehitimong transaksyon ay sa official GCash app lang dapat gawin, kabilang na ang pagresolba sa mga concerns sa iyong account.

Kung ikaw ay minamadali, maaring phishing scam ‘yan! I-check muna ang GCash app para tingnan ang status ng iyong account, at huwag i-share ang MPIN at OTP kahit kanino man – kahit pa sa mga taong nagpapakilala bilang empleyado ng GCash. Tandaan, hindi kailanman hihingi ng GCash ang mga impormasyong ito sa iyo.

● ‘Nanalo ka ng premyo!’ phishing scam

Sa pangatlong phishing scam, papaniwalain ka ng mga scammer na nanalo ka ng rewards o premyo mula sa GCash kahit na wala kang sinalihang raffle. Bibigyan ka nila ng link para makuha ang iyong impormasyon at gamitin ito para i-access ang iyong account.

Ang modus:

Sa scam na ito, may magpapanggap na GCash representative at magpapadala ng text o email na nagsasabing nanalo ka ng reward, cashback o premyo. Bibigyan ka rin ng link para makuha ang premyo, ngunit dadalhin ka nito sa isang pekeng website na kamukha ng GCash portal. Kapag nilagay mo ang iyong mobile number, MPIN at OTP, maari na nilang i-access ang iyong GCash account.

Paano ito maiiwasan:

Laging tandaan na hindi nagpapadala ang GCash ng link sa pamamagitan ng text, email at messaging apps. Sa ngayon, walang opisyal na rewards program ang GCash. Lahat ng lehitimong promos naman ay matatagpuan lamang sa loob ng official GCash app kaya huwag magclick sa mga link at huwag ibigay ang MPIN at OTP sa kahit kanino man. Ugaliing basahin ang mga text o email na matatanggap, lalo na ang mga mensahe na galing sa hindi inaasahan o kilalang sender.

Talamak man ang phishing scam sa Pilipinas, huwag magpabiktima. Sa oras na hingin ang inyong personal information sa labas ng GCash app or lehitimong GCash website, scam ‘yan!

Ngayong alam mo na kung anu-ano ang mga panibagong e-wallet phishing scam, mas mapapahalagahan mo ang iyong e-wallet, lalo na ang iyong mga personal na impormasyon. Kabilang na dito ang maigting na paalala na huwag mong i-share ang MPIN at OTP mo.

Kapag ikaw ay nakaranas ng phishing scam at mga kahina-hinalang aktibidad ukol sa iyong GCash account, maari mo itong i-report sa official GCash Help Center (help.gcash.com/hc/en-us) o i-message si Gigi sa website gamit ang, “I want to report a scam.”

Check and respond to messages, anytime

If you receive a message via messaging apps in the middle of a workout or while enjoying a meal with friends, you can check or even type a quick reply using your Galaxy Watch as long as the message notification is activated. When a new message is received, a slight vibration or sound alert will appear immediately on screen. If you miss the alert, you can go back to the message by swiping the watch face to the right and you can compose a quick reply by tapping an emoji or tying a message.

Sync your devices fuss free

Enjoy all of these functions with your Samsung Watch when you connect it to your Samsung smartphone! Just enable your phone’s Bluetooth and the watch will connect to the phone. If you are connecting the watch to a new phone, simply reset your watch by pressing the “Home” and “Back” buttons and wait for reset to finish. Upon finishing the reset, go to “Settings” on the watch and select “General”. Then tap, “Connect to a new phone” and you’re good to maximize your Samsung Watch functions without having to pull out your phone.
