To celebrate and break even more barriers when it comes to going digital, Smart Communications presents to its subscribers a free concert on July 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum featuring some of the country’s most exciting artists.

Dubbed as Smart Music Live, the concert features Crwn, Up Dharma Down, Nathan Sykes, Autotelic, Aegis and Ely Buendia.

Cholesterol incidence in PH on the rise, Del Monte Heart Smart and PATACSI address and raise awareness on the rising incidence of high cholesterol in the country

Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI), a leading producer of pineapple and other food products with Del Monte Heart Smart and PATACSI partner to help address and raise awareness on the rising incidence of high cholesterol in the country held a conference held last July 8, 2016 in Crowne Plaza Galleria.

The number of Filipinos with high levels of cholesterol has greatly increased, results from the 8th National Nutrition Survey show. In 2008, 31.3% or 1 in 3 Filipino adults had borderline to high cholesterol. The latest survey in 2013 by the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), however, shows that the prevalence has alarmingly spiked to 1 in 2 Filipino adults. The FNRI’s latest data reveals that 46.9% of Filipinos aged 20 and up today have borderline to high cholesterol.
“The rising prevalence of high total cholesterol today is alarming. We need to make people more aware of the situation and do something about it” said Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, Assistant Scientist from the FNRI. “Having high cholesterol levels means being subject to greater risk of heart disease and other illnesses. A switch to a healthier lifestyle is a major step in keeping these diseases at bay.”

Some top factors likely leading to the increase in cholesterol levels include poor dietary choices, stress, and physical inactivity. Experts also link high levels of cholesterol to the top non-communicable disease (NCD) killers in the Philippines which include diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases alone account for 170,000 deaths in the Philippines each year, making it the leading cause of mortality among Filipinos.

Curbing cholesterol levels

As a response to this major health issue on high cholesterol in the country, Del Monte launched Heart Smart 100% Pineapple Juice and Orange Juice Drink with Reducol, which is an ingredient that is clinically proven to help lower cholesterol. Studies have shown that plant sterols and stanols, the main components of Reducol, significantly lowered bad cholesterol levels among clinical trial participants. The Philippine Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (PATACSI), the specialty organization of all certified thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons in the Philippines, is partnering and supporting Del Monte in this advocacy to increase awareness and help prevent the continuous rise of cholesterol in the country.

According to Mr. David Peele, President of Avoca Inc. and makers of Reducol, “based on various clinical studies conducted, Reducol has been proven to be safe and effective in lowering cholesterol levels.”

In the Philippines, Del Monte Heart Smart is the only Reducol-fortified food product or drink, containing 1 g of US-FDA approved Reducol per serving. Based on the results of clinical studies, two servings of Del Monte Heart Smart per day may help reduce cholesterol levels in eight weeks.

Healthy lifestyle still the key

Benedict Ong, Assistant Product Manager for Del Monte 100% pineapple juice

Though Del Monte Heart Smart with Reducol reduces cholesterol levels, a healthy lifestyle remains vital to optimize benefits.

“To best manage cholesterol, it is still important to have a healthy regimen which includes a healthy diet and constant exercise” said PATACSI President Dr. Michael Baccay. A diet consisting of fruits and vegetables, whole grain, fat-free and low-fat milk products, fish, legumes (beans), and lean skinless meats can help prevent spikes in cholesterol.

JOINT EFFORTS AGAINST BAD CHOLESTEROL
Del Monte Philippines Inc hosted on July 8 a symposium on the management of rising bad cholesterol levels among Filipinos. The symposium took place during the 56th Foundation Day of Del Monte’s partner, the Philippine Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons’ (PATACSI). Among the symposium’s speakers and panelists are (from left) Dr. Michael Baccay, PATACSI President; Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, Assistant Scientist from the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI); Clars Guerrero, Marketing Director for Del Monte Beverages and Fruits; Paula Ceña, Product Manager for Del Monte 100% Pineapple Juice; Benedict Ong, Assistant Product Manager for Del Monte 100% pineapple juice; Sheryl Sanchez-Mallo, Regulatory Affairs Scientist of Del Monte Research & Development Team; and David Peele, Avoca Inc. President.

The 56th PATACSI Foundation Day held last July 8, 2016 in Crowne Plaza Galleria serves as the official kick off for the partnership between Del Monte Heart Smart and PATACSI in addressing and creating awareness on cholesterol management in the country.

Del Monte Heart Smart is available in all leading supermarkets and groceries nationwide at Php 26.00 SRP for 240mL cans and Php 82.00 SRP for Orange 1 Liter Resealable Tetra Pack.

Globe urges Akamai to include PH mobile internet performance in report

Globe Telecom calls on Akamai to include the mobile internet results for the Philippines in its quarterly State of the Internet (SOI) report in reaction to the 1st Quarter results released recently where the country's internet performance was once again benchmarked using fixed broadband internet.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications said that similar to other countries, Akamai should include the PH in its report on mobile internet to provide the public with a complete picture on the country’s true state of internet speed. “By using the average speed for fixed broadband to represent the internet speed for the whole country is erroneous. It is not reflective of the true state of internet considering that majority of Filipinos are using mobile data to access the internet. In comparison with other countries, this will again put the Philippines in bad light and will be used as reference in many studies and reports,” Crisanto said.

In the latest SOI report of Akamai, the average internet speed in the Philippines for fixed broadband increased by 24% from 2.8Mbps in Q1 of 2015 to 3.5Mbps in Q1 of 2016. The peak speed also increased by 47% year on year from 20.3Mbps in Q1 2015 to 29.9Mbps this quarter. Due to a history of underinvestment in the area of fixed broadband, the telco industry is trying to catch up by addressing the huge infrastructure gaps in contrast with its Asian neighbors.

Crisanto added that the Akamai report is being used as reference by government agencies, media and special interest groups in creating their position on issues that affect the industry. “Akamai must now realize the importance of their SOI report so they should prioritize the inclusion of the Philippines' mobile internet in the next report,” Crisanto stressed.

Globe has been reaching out to various sectors to educate the public on the challenges facing the industry with regard to internet speed and costs. Generally, industry investments were used to modernize and improve mobile networks to make mobile internet more pervasive in a shorter period of time. The increasing adoption of smartphones in the country is a testament that the industry strategy putting money in mobile business is sound. However, the new trends on video streaming and digital entertainment is putting pressure on home connectivity where the country is deeply challenged.

Globe is now refocusing its efforts to upgrade its fixed broadband internet backbone nationwide. Addressing the need to enhance fixed broadband is part of the company's commitment to enhance network coverage for a wider reach and faster data experience for Filipinos nationwide. Earlier this year, the company announced its plan to create an internet super highway by deploying fiber optics in 20,000 barangays all over the country by 2020 to provide ultra-fast internet access to about 2 million homes nationwide.

Philippines makes its mark as global entertainment destination

The Philippines once again made its mark in the global entertainment scene as over 26,000 fans from across the globe gathered together for some explosive dance music performed by renowned local and international pop icons in this year’s biggest music event, the MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016.

Presented by the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), the one-night-only outdoor live music event, with the theme Can’t Stop Movin!, presented the amazing evolution of pop music and its dance influences. The Concert Grounds of SM Mall of Asia was basically on fire as fans danced, cheered and sang their hearts out on hit after hit of iconic and contemporary pop dance music.

World-renowned local artists, Mr. Pure Energy Gary V. and his son, Gab Valenciano opened up the stage with an intense set of performance. Filipino favourite teen love team, James Reid and Nadine Lustre followed, sending fans high above the love cloud with their kilig-filled performance.

American singer-songwriter, Bebe Rhexia also pumped up the stage with her hit songs including “Me, Myself and I” and “Broken Hearts”. Fans also went wild as A-Pink, one of Korea’s favorite K-pop idol female groups, flawlessly performed “Remember”, “Mr. Chu”, “Luv” and “No No No”. L.A. grown electronic dance trio Far East Movement got everyone singing, dancing and jumping with their hit singles, “Like a G6” and “Rocketeer”. The headliner, prolific hit-maker, One Republic, wrapped up their performance of “Counting Stars”, “Apologize”, “Stop and Stare” and “Secret” with an explosion of fireworks.

It gets even better as the Philippines will also be highlighted in a global telecast reaching an international audience of more than three-quarters of a billion households in over 160 countries under the MTV World Stage global series.

Only on its second year, MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016 proved once again that the Philippines is not only a premier global destination for arts and culture and leisure and adventure, but is also one of the world’s top destinations for world-class entertainment.

Robin’s golden touch

There is this famous figure in Greek mythology, King Midas, who turned everything he touched into gold.

And then there is action star Robin Padilla who seems to be like King Midas. Recently, it looks like everything or every person that Robin supports or endorses turns “golden.”

Take the case of new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte whom Robin supported in the last elections. Robin was very vocal about his support for Duterte. He even campaigned for Duterte to OFWs in Hong Kong.

Even before the former Davao City Mayor confirmed that he was running, and even before he was leading in the surveys, Robin had already stated that he wanted Mayor Duterte to be the highest leader of the land. On his birthday last November, Robin said that his wish was for Mayor Duterte to file his candidacy and become president. Robin got his wish!

Robin firmly believes that Duterte is what the Philippines needs.

Robin’s touch worked again at “Pilipinas Got Talent” (“PGT”) Season 5 wherein the Power Duo composed of acrobatic dancers Anjanette and Gavin emerged as winners (the first set of dancers to win in “PGT” history). Robin served as judge on “PGT,” and it was he who first spotted the star potential of the Anjanette and Gavin when he hit the golden buzzer that sent them to the semi-finals.

Robin also wields magic in the advertising world where he remains as top celebrity endorser. Moneygram renewed their contract with the action star whom the remittance company believes has a strong appeal to the OFWs and OFW families which are their market.

Other advertisers, namely, Kawasaki, Liveraide and Talk N’ Text have also renewed their contracts with Robin, affirming that the star continues to draw in sales for their products.

Northern Cement also recognized Robin’s influence and so it recently got him as endorser. Same with Hotel Sogo that enlisted Robin and wife Mariel Rodriguez to be its ambassadors now that the hotel chain is repositioning itself as a family-friendly destination.

Speaking of Mariel, the “Showtime” host is now three months pregnant and Robin couldn’t be happier. “Ang tagal naming hinintay magkaanak,” says Robin. “Pagkatapos ng ilang pagsubok, eto nga at tatlong buwang buntis na si Mariel. Pareho naming ipinagdarasal na maging safe at smooth ang kanyang pagbubuntis. Malaking blessing ito para sa amin. Alam kong malaking sakripisyo ang pinagdadaanan ni Mariel, hindi madali ang kanyang pagbubuntis. Kailangan ng pag-iingat.”

Everything seems to be going well in Robin’s professional and personal lives, we couldn’t help but ask the star what he has been doing to be gifted with this seemingly golden touch. “Eh, wala naman,” he declares humbly. “Matagal na akong going straight,” he says referring to his checkered past. “Ang akin ngayon, gusto ko lang patuloy na gumawa ng mabuti para sa pamilya, para sa kapwa, at lalong-lalo na, para sa bayan.”

Bringing joy to everyone around him—his family, friends, his kababayans— is what Robin with the golden touch wants to continue doing. Fans of Binoe in London and Canada will be thrilled to know that he will visit them in July for a series of shows for The Filipino Channel (TFC).

Continue touching our lives, Robin!

Urban Living Collective to feature locally-made home products and ideas to millennials

Two-day event to be held July 30-31 at Capitol Commons

Looking to update the look of your pad and brighten up your space with locally-made furniture and home accessories?

Join other millennial homeowners at the Urban Living Collective, a two-day event happening on July 30 and 31 at one of the metro’s hippest lifestyle destinations, Capitol Commons.

Urban Living Collective will feature merchants offering a vast array of products and services that will address the needs of homeowners. At the event organized by Project 1 MNL, attendees will have a grand time shopping for items to deck their homes with—furniture, kitchenware, indoor plants, framed art, fur carpets, light boxes, vinyls and turntables, lamps, blinds, bedsheets and pillow covers, home scents, fire extinguishers, ceramics, cleaning detergents, organic snacks, and pantry favorites, among others.

"Project 1 MNL hopes to make decorating accessible and enjoyable for a new generation of homeowners through Urban Living Collective, the team's first event that promotes affordable home design using decor and furniture pieces from local enterprises. This is a straightforward bazaar and it hopes to make interior designing less daunting to young Filipino homeowners," says Cami Revilla, Project 1 MNL head collaborator.

Fellow head collaborator Fatima Fule adds, "Urban Living Collective is designed to cater to working millennials who live in apartments and condominiums with limited floor space, a common constraint in urban living. We hope that through this event, homeowners will realize that there are many ways to supersize the style of small spaces. It's possible to jazz up a home with limited square footage and turn it into a cosy and relaxing sanctuary."

The event will also serve as a platform for startup entrepreneurs to showcase their products. The Philippines is a great source for furniture and home decors, thanks to easy access to raw materials as well as the country's skilled craftsmen. Some of the merchants participating in the Urban Living Collective include Gabrienne's Home Decor, The Nifty Decorator, Red Slab Pottery, Amber Lights Laguna, Lumos by Lighthouse Enterprise, Ylaya Studio, The Wheelbarrow Store, Bronco Philippines, Fake Alchemy, and The Fur Factory.

Urban Living Collective is open to the public from 10 am to 9 pm on July 30-31. The event will be held at the park of Capitol Commons, the new mixed-use space developed by Ortigas & Co. which has fostered food, shopping, and other lifestyle activities since it opened in 2013. Freebies will be available to the first 300 shoppers who will purchase at least P300 from any of the booths. The event is supported by Capitol Commons, Sharetea, OMIZU Beautifying Natural Spring Water, The Linden Suites, Real Living, and WhenInManila.com.
