Generika Drugstore, Ayala Foundation’s Scholarship Program Empowers Next Generation of Pharmacists

Scholars smile with Generika Drugstore and Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI) officials during a virtual meet-and-greet before their semester started in August.

Aspiring pharmacist Micaella Abedejos from Davao City is pursuing her degree for a deeply personal reason: she wants to help her sick grandmother, who is taking several medications.

"Whenever I come home from school, my grandmother would ask me about her medications, and being able to explain it to her made me happy," 20-year-old Micaella shared.

Her knowledge from pharmacy school empowered her to explain to her grandmother the purpose of each medication, helping her manage her health and avoid potential errors. To Micaella, this is the important role pharmacists play in the community—to educate and empower the vulnerable sectors of our society.

“This inspired me to share my knowledge about her medications because I didn't want her taking them without knowing what they were for. I felt motivated to help and make a difference,” she added.

Micaella’s mother is a housewife, and her father works as an informal electronics repairman. Due to their irregular and limited income, it would have been challenging for them to support her college education, especially with three other siblings also in school.

But with her academic excellence and determination, Micaella was one of the chosen beneficiaries of the Enrollment to Employment Scholarship Program of Generika Drugstore, in partnership with Ayala Foundation Inc. (AFI).

This initiative responds to the demand for pharmacists, especially in rural areas, by making it possible for students to pursue their studies.

Atty. Yet Abarca, the President and CEO of Generika Drugstore, emphasized that the scholarship program is in fulfillment of its promise to provide ginhawa by giving Filipino communities access to quality affordable generic medicines. She noted that pharmacists often serve as the primary point of contact for healthcare, especially in underserved areas where drugstores outnumber clinics and hospitals.

You’ve been drinking water all wrong. Dr. Kilimanguru explains the top 5 signs of dehydration.

With the weather in the Philippines feeling hotter every year, keeping cool can be difficult. In these scorching times, staying hydrated is more important than ever, with the right water being crucial in keeping the heat and dehydration at bay. But what is “the right water” that truly replenishes our fluids and gives us the best hydration?

The doctor has spoken. In a recent video, Dr. Kilimanguru, known online as Dr. Kilimanguru, talked about some signs of dehydration, due to not drinking enough water, or from not drinking mineral water. Mineral water contains essential minerals our bodies do not produce naturally, but are important nonetheless, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium. 

Should our bodies lack these needed minerals according to Dr. Kilimanguru, these five dehydration symptoms may occur.

Dry lips, sunken eyes, and dry skin is our first telltale sign of dehydration. While our bodies need lots of water to stay hydrated to prevent this dryness, the right water can really make a difference. As you go through your day, especially during physical activity, the body loses the fluids needed to stay active. Mineral water contains the minerals that help improve hydration, keeping us quenched throughout the day with healthier skin.

If you experience frequent headaches, that may also be a sign that the water you are drinking is not enough. According to Dr. Kilimanguru, headaches can also come from dehydration. The right water, when you drink lots of it, will help improve blood flow to your head, preventing headaches and keeping your head clear.

A darker urine color is also an indication of water deficiency. As per Dr. Kilimanguru in his video, we should aim to have our urine be light yellow to clear, a sign of sufficient hydration and the right kind of water. If your urine is darker, mineral water may improve your fluid content.

Muscle cramps may also be linked to dehydration and the lack of minerals in the body. Dr. Kilimanguru says that it’s not just stretching that causes muscle cramps – a deficiency in potassium and calcium can also be a trigger. Mineral water that contains these minerals can deter muscle cramps, especially during fitness routines and outdoor activities

Surprisingly, weight gain can be a sign of dehydration. In the doctors video, he states that our metabolism is affected by our water intake, with less water leading to slower metabolism. Calcium and potassium also aid in a faster metabolism, so drinking mineral water can strengthen hydration.

Take care of your nerves – millions of people with peripheral neuropathy are undiagnosed and suffer in silence

Have you ever heard of peripheral neuropathy? In fact, millions of people suffer from this disease. Because of lack of awareness, some remain undiagnosed and untreated, suffering in silence for years. Peripheral neuropathy (PN) caused by nerve damage is one of the most common diseases of the peripheral nervous system, which controls all functions of our body, sensations in our hands, and movements of our muscles. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, prickling, and stabbing or burning pain mostly in the feet and hands.

Many people affected by the disease are not aware that their symptoms are due to PN as the disease often starts with mild symptoms and develops slowly, almost silently over long periods of time1.

At some point, symptoms become more severe and bothersome, affecting various aspects of a patient’s life. Without even realizing it, the patient will start losing mobility, struggle with performing simple day-to-day activities, have difficulties sleeping, or suffer injuries in their feet—all due to progressing nerve damage.

8 out of 10 patients remain undiagnosed

Unfortunately, PN awareness is low among the general population and many doctors. It is often only recognized and diagnosed at the late stages of the disease when nerve damage—that could otherwise have been avoided—has already progressed. Studies report, that approximately 80% of people, both in high- and low-income countries, living with diabetes and suffering from PN symptoms have not been diagnosed.2,3

This urgently needs to change. Raising awareness about the importance of nerve health and potential risk factors for nerve damage in the community and among physicians is key!

On the patient’s side, these can include lack of awareness about PN and its risk factors, failing to notice the early signs, neglecting to see a doctor in time, and difficulties in verbalizing the symptoms. On the other side, physicians are often prevented from diagnosing PN patients due to crowded clinics, shortage of time, and lack of awareness and established diagnostic routine.4
