DLSU’s Improved Sikat II to compete in 26th World Solar Challenge

SIKAT II is a solar and battery-powered electric vehicle. It is specifically built and design to compete in the 2013 World Solar Challenge.
Sikat II, the latest solar-powered race car developed and bullt in the Philippines was launched together with the team who developed and will operate the car in the World Solar race was given a warm send-off as the country’s official participant to the 2013 World Solar Challenge.

Last September 18, a press conference held at De La Salle University (DLSU) Taft Avenue, Manila with a gathering of scientists, environmentalists, media, bloggers, students and members of the DLSU academe.
The team is comprised of 50 mechanical and electrical engineering students plus six faculty members from De La Salle University. Additional improvements, which took a grueling seven months to complete, were applied to Sikat II. The vehicle was subject to test runs at Basa Airbase and SCTEX to ensure optimum performance.

The famed solar car was reported to run with increased speeds at lower power consumption, making it the most efficient version of the vehicle to date. This will help further the team’s goal of landing in the top 3 of the competition.

The improved version of Sikat II runs at an average speed of 80 kph and a maximum speed of 110 kph. The solar car uses Sunpower Silicon with an estimated efficiency of 22%. It also uses a power output of 1300 W.

Mechanical and electrical engineering students from the De La Salle University pose with Sikat II, the solar-powered car they helped design and build for the World Solar Challenge in Australia in October 2013.

Sikat II also boasts of a new battery management system, improved telemetry, upgraded wiring, and cruise control. Its brakes are also newly designed and the solar car has a new suspension system. For aerodynamics, it has a lower coefficient of drag achieved through modifications in fairings. High performance Schwalbe Sleek tires were also used for the car.

First Phil Holdings, First Gen, Energy Development Corporation, Sunpower, Ufreight, Shell, and Motolite helped make the improved Sikat II possible.

The solar car team wishes to further the cause of promoting the use of renewable energy and clean technologies in the field of transportation. The World Solar Challenge, established in 1987, has been a strong platform for young engineers and scientists all over the world for the pursuing the ideals of sustainable transport. 47 teams from 26 countries will be competing this year.

Five Awardees take center stage in the 55th Ramon Magsaysay Awards Ceremonies

THREE individuals and two organizations who share the virtue of selflessness in working for their people’s welfare received the 2013 Ramon Magsaysay Awards in a formal presentation ceremony at the CCP Main Theater last August 31.
This year’s awardees come from diverse cultures and regions—Lahpai Seng Raw from Myanmar, Habiba Sarabi from Afghanistan, Ernesto Domingo from the Philippines, Shakti Samuha from Nepal, and the Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK) or Corruption Eradication Commission from Indonesia.
Hon. Maria Lourdes Sereno, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, was the guest of honor during the ceremony. She lead the conferment of the Award certificates and medallions to the five awardees. A video presentation commemorating the 55th Anniversary of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation was ushered during the proceedings.
The Magsaysay Awardees had a full schedule of activities prior to the Awards. They delivered public lectures and met with NGOs, academic institutions, development organizations, and local government executives. This allowed the awardees to share with a wide and diverse audience the remarkable work they are doing.
The Magsaysay Award was established in 1957 to honor the spirit of greatness and selfless leadership manifested in the extraordinary lives and work of the laureates— individuals and organizations who are dubbed as Asia’s heroes of change. President Ramon Magsaysay, whose life and leadership inspired the creation of the Award, now regarded as Asia’s premier prize and the region’s highest honor.

Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine gives birth to boy!

"It's a boy! Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to the first child for her and Prince William."

Prince William says he and his wife Catherine "could not be happier" to welcome their first child, after the duchess gave birth to a boy.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a son on Monday, the third in line to the throne, a baby destined to be the 43rd monarch since William the Conqueror obtained the English crown in 1066.
Kensington Palace announced at 8.30pm that the baby was delivered at 4.24pm in the exclusive Lindo wing at St Mary's hospital, Paddington, west London. His name will be announced in due course. "We could not be happier," the Duke of Cambridge said.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said: "Her royal highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The duchess, who had planned for a natural birth, experienced at least 10-and-a-half hours labour, which Kensington Palace said had "progressed as normal".

The birth of the baby prince means the monarchy has three generations of heirs to the throne for the first time since 1894 and the birth of the future Edward VIII.
The baby's name has not yet been announced, but he will be known as the Prince of Cambridge.

There is no precedent for when the royal couple will announce the name. Prince William was not named for a week, while Prince Charles's name was not announced for a month.

The baby's grandfather Prince Charles issued a statement saying he and his wife Camilla were "overjoyed" at the arrival.

The statement issued by Clarence House said,

"It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy."

"Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."

Hundreds gathered outside the hospital to celebrate the news. The crowd sang: "Happy birthday dear royal baby," in absence of a name.

Later several hundred people were outside Buckingham Palace, where an ornate easel announced the birth.
Congratulations  Prince William and Duchess Catherine !

Here's the Prayer for royal baby.

The Church of England has put this on its website.

God our Creator,

who knows each of us by name
and loves us from all eternity:
we give you thanks for new life and human love.
Bless William and Catherine
as they welcome their son into the world.
Give them patience and wisdom
to cherish and love him as he grows.
Surround the family with the light of hope and
the warmth of your love today and always;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Google’s resource page for Philippine elections gets hits from over 50 countries

For the Philippine elections 2013, the Google’s resource page gets hits from over 50 countries around the world. Since its launch on the first week of May, Google’s Philippine elections resource page (Google.com.ph/elections) has been getting hits from over 50 countries around over the world. As of this writing, the resource page has been visited by Internet users from as far as Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Finland, and the Netherlands.

The resource page is a collaboration between Google Philippines and broadcast networks ABS-CBN, GMA, PTV, and SOLARtv, and online news portals Rappler.com, PhilStar.com, Inquirer.net and Interaksyon.com. The site brings together election-related updates from Google Philippines’ partner media establishments in one platform.

The content-rich Elections Page contains stories culled from various local news sites. Users can search for election-related news information by political party or national issue. Broadcast coverage are also aggregated from participating networks’ YouTube channels into one tab. Election-related incidents are also plotted on a Google Maps map tile of the Philippines embedded in the site. This provides Internet users a visual idea of crisis and violence levels in areas of interest.

“We are proud to see that many Filipinos outside the Philippines are finding the site helpful. The millions of overseas Filipinos, including the 700,000 registered absentee voters abroad, are out of reach of the candidates’ traditional campaign propaganda. Through the site, we are able to make election-related information accessible to them, helping them make their decision come election day,” said Narciso Reyes, Google Philippines Country Manager.

Jodie Foster's Speech was one of the biggest highlights of 2013 Golden Globes

Jodie Foster is honoured with the Cecil B DeMille award at the 2013 Golden Globes. She wows the Golden Globes with her speech. I have watched it on TV , and I still watch it many times on videos. I love her since her "Silence of the Lambs" and almost all her movies.  Here's Jodie Foster’s acceptance speech after winning the Cecil B. DeMille award. This  was one of the biggest highlights of Sunday’s Golden Globe awards.

Below, read the full transcript of her speech.

“Well, for all of you ‘SNL’ fans, I’m 50! I’m 50! You know, I need to do that without this dress on, but you know, maybe later at Trader Vic’s, boys and girls. What do you say? I’m 50! You know, I was going to bring my walker tonight but it just didn’t go with the cleavage.”
“Robert [Downey Jr.], I want to thank you for everything: for your bat-crazed, rapid-fire brain, the sweet intro. I love you and Susan and I am so grateful that you continually talk me off the ledge when I go on and foam at the mouth and say, ‘I’m done with acting, I’m done with acting, I’m really done, I’m done, I’m done.’”
“Trust me, 47 years in the film business is a long time. You just ask those Golden Globes, because you crazy kids, you’ve been around here forever. You know, Phil you’re a nut, Aida, Scott — thank you for honoring me tonight. It is the most fun party of the year, and tonight I feel like the prom queen. Thank you. Looking at all those clips, you know, the hairdos and the freaky platform shoes, it’s like a home-movie nightmare that just won’t end, and all of these people sitting here at these tables, they’re my family of sorts, you know. Fathers mostly. Executives, producers, the directors, my fellow actors out there, we’ve giggled through love scenes, we’ve punched and cried and spit and vomited and blown snot all over one another — and those are just the costars I liked.”
“But, you know, more than anyone else, I share my most special memories with members of the crew. Blood-shaking friendships, brothers and sisters. We made movies together, and you can’t get more intimate than that.
“So while I’m here being all confessional, I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public. So, a declaration that I’m a little nervous about but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now, huh Jennifer? But I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this. I am single. Yes I am, I am single. No, I’m kidding — but I mean I’m not really kidding, but I’m kind of kidding. I mean, thank you for the enthusiasm. Can I get a wolf whistle or something?”
“…be a big coming-out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now I’m told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. You know, you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No, I’m sorry, that’s just not me. It never was and it never will be. Please don’t cry because my reality show would be so boring. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard or I’d have to spank Daniel Craig’s bottom just to stay on the air. It’s not bad work if you can get it, though.”
“But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy.”
“Someday, in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there from the time that I was 3-years-old. That’s reality-show enough, don’t you think? There are a few secrets to keeping your psyche intact over such a long career. The first, love people and stay beside them.”
“That table over there, 222, way out in Idaho, Paris, Stockholm, that one, next to the bathroom with all the unfamous faces, the very same faces for all these years. My acting agent, Joe Funicello — Joe, do you believe it, 38 years we’ve been working together? Even though he doesn’t count the first eight. Matt Saver, Pat Kingsley, Jennifer Allen, Grant Niman and his uncle Jerry Borack, may he rest in peace. Lifers. My family and friends here tonight and at home, and of course, Mel Gibson. You know you save me too.”
“There is no way I could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor, ski buddy, consigliere, most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard. Thank you, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family. Our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit, who are my reason to breathe and to evolve, my blood and soul. And boys, in case you didn’t know it, this song, all of this, this song is for you. This brings me to the greatest influence of my life, my amazing mother, Evelyn. Mom, I know you’re inside those blue eyes somewhere and that there are so many things that you won’t understand tonight.”
“But this is the only important one to take in: I love you, I love you, I love you. And I hope that if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of knowing that you did good in this life. You’re a great mom. Please take that with you when you’re finally OK to go. You see, Charlie and Kit, sometimes your mom loses it too. I can’t help but get moony, you know. This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else. Scary and exciting and now what?”
“Well, I may never be up on this stage again, on any stage for that matter. Change, you gotta love it. I will continue to tell stories, to move people by being moved, the greatest job in the world. It’s just that from now on, I may be holding a different talking stick. And maybe it won’t be as sparkly, maybe it won’t open on 3,000 screens, maybe it will be so quiet and delicate that only dogs can hear it whistle. But it will be my writing on the wall. Jodie Foster was here, I still am, and I want to be seen, to be understood deeply and to be not so very lonely. Thank you, all of you, for the company. Here’s to the next 50 years.

Pedro Calungsod, Filipino lay catechist and martyr :The Holy Father has decreed that the canonization will be held in Rome on October 21

The Holy Father has decreed that the canonization will be held in Rome on October 21, 2012.
Pedro Calungsod was a 17th century teenage catechist of the Jesuit mission in the Marianas.  On April 2, 1672 he was killed for his faith together with Bl. Diego San Luis Vitoris, SJ in Guam. The canonization process for Pedro Calungsod started on June 25, 1998.  On March 5, 2000 he was declared a "beatus".  On December 19, 2011 a miracle through his intercession was approved.

"Dear brothers and sisters, pray that [the new cardinals'] lives will always reflect the Lord Jesus, our sole Shepherd and Teacher, Source of every hope, Who points out the path to everyone. And pray also for me, that I may continually offer to the People of God the witness of sound doctrine and guide holy Church with a firm and humble hand."

Following his homily the Pope pronounced the the formula of creation of the new cardinals, their names and the diaconate or presbyteral order to which they have been assigned. The new cardinals then recited the Creed and swore their faithfulness and obedience to the Pope and his successors. Amelia Earhart in a Google Doodle for 115th birthday

Google honored Earhart on her 115th birthday anniversary by putting up a doodle on its site on July 24, 2012.

Amelia Mary Earhart ,  born July 24, 1897  and  disappeared 1937.  Earhart was the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Earhart was a faculty member of the Purdue University aviation department in 1935  to counsel women on careers and help inspire others with her love for aviation.

She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. She wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

She was also a member of the National Woman's Party and an early supporter of the Equal Rights AmendmentDuring an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.

Patti Smith published two poems dedicated to Earhart: "Amelia Earhart I" and "Amelia Earhart II" in her 1972 poetry collection Seventh Heaven.

In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "The 37's" (first aired 1995), Earhart, portrayed by Sharon Lawrence, was one of many humans abducted by an alien race in 1937, only to be found in cryo-stasis on a planet on the other side of the galaxy.
Academy Award nominee Amy Adams portrayed Earhart in Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009).

Earhart is portrayed by Hilary Swank, “In America” (2009).

A musical play titled “Amelia: The Girl Who Wants To Fly” in 2011, hosted by the Great Canadian Theatre Company.

Singer Joni Mitchell wrote a song called "Amelia" on her 1976 album, Hejira, based on Earhart's legacy. A video of her live album Shadows and Light (1980) includes the song "Amelia"

"Amelia"

I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
It was the strings of my guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

The drone of flying engines
Is a song so wild and blue
It scrambles time and seasons if it gets thru to you
Then your life becomes a travelogue
Of picture-post-card-charms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

People will tell you where they've gone
They'll tell you where to go
But till you get there yourself you never really know
Where some have found their paradise
Other's just come to harm
Oh Amelia, it was just a false alarm

I wish that he was here tonight
It's so hard to obey
His sad request of me to kindly stay away
So this is how I hide the hurt
As the road leads cursed and charmed
I tell Amelia, it was just a false alarm

A ghost of aviation
She was swallowed by the sky
Or by the sea, like me she had a dream to fly
Like Icarus ascending
On beautiful foolish arms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

Maybe I've never really loved
I guess that is the truth
I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude
And looking down on everything
I crashed into his arms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel
To shower off the dust
And I slept on the strange pillows of my wanderlust
I dreamed of 747s
Over geometric farms
Dreams, Amelia, dreams and false alarms
