House of Cards Season 4 - Frank Underwood knows too well that f'oul is fair'

Shakespeare’s power-hungry characters and House of Cards’ chief executive are more similar than we think

The airing of House of Cards Season Four could not have mirrored a more appropriate time as the Philippines and the United States elect their future leaders this year. As Election Day comes closer, the unfolding political drama in these countries grows more and more intense.

But did you know that House of Cards is largely influenced by works of the greatest English dramatist? As artists and scholars all over the world look forward to William Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary in April, shows like House of Cards and characters like Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey) remind audiences of the enduring influence of the Bard’s works.

Here are some facts on Shakespeare’s influence on the series.

1. Richard III is a major basis of Frank Underwood’s character

The original House of Cards is based on a novel by Michael Dobbs, a British Conservative politician. Dobbs’ novel was adapted into a series that aired in 1990 in the United Kingdom. A major basis of the novel’s central character was Shakespeare’s Richard III, a play about an English king who earned a reputation as an ambitious and murderous villain.

Like Frank Underwood, the title character in Richard III did not hesitate to get rid of the people who thwarted his ambition. Richard III killed one character after another, including his brother, wife, and two young nephews. After a brief reign, the notorious character met a bloody end on a battlefield in the hands of traitors.

2. Kevin Spacey played Richard III

In playing the ruthless Frank Underwood, Kevin Spacey seems to be getting in touch with a character he has played before. In 2014, Spacey played the title role in Sam Mendes’ production of Richard III, which went on an international tour for ten months. For this production, Kevin Spacey’s look was inspired by the late Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi who was killed by rebel forces in 2011.

3. Frank Underwood’s “asides” are often used in Shakespeare’s plays

There are moments in House of Cards when Frank Underwood would talk to the viewer and reveal his intentions. In the British series, the lead character also talks to the audience in this manner called an “aside.”An aside is a dramatic device where a character shares his thoughts to the audience. Asides are usually not heard by other characters on stage, but they allow the audience to understand what’s going on in the speaker’s mind.

4. Claire and Frank Underwood’s marriage mirror the relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

Frank Underwood’s wife Claire is supportive of her husband’s schemes and ambitions, and they both share a taste for power. At first, their relationship is very similar to that of Shakespeare’s ultimate power-hungry couple, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

But readers of the Scottish play would notice that at the beginning of the story, Macbeth is full of doubt, while his wife was more certain in their pursuit of power. Towards the end of the play, Macbeth becomes a murderous tyrant, and Lady Macbeth is driven to madness by her guilt.

The outcome of Macbeth and his wife resembles Claire and Frank’s relationship in the latest episodes of House of Cards. While they used to be supportive of each other, their marriage—along with their political partnership—now seems to have broken down.

Considering that House of Cards is based on Shakespeare’s tragedies, a curious question could now be: Will the series end the same way a Shakespearean tragedy would?

House of Cards Season Four airs every Tuesday, 9:55pm (8:55pm JKT/BKK), first and exclusive on RTL CBS Entertainment HD.

Netherlands, Philippines strengthen ties through collaboration

Sustainability through innovations – key to international development

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands introduces “Inspire Innovation: Leading Sustainable Innovations toward a Progressive World,” a series of events geared toward the promotion of innovative solutions for international sustainable development.

This year, the Netherlands marks its 65 years of diplomatic ties and 150 years of consular relations with the Philippines through a celebration entitled “Inspire Innovation: Leading Sustainable Innovations toward a Progressive World”. The celebration will focus on promoting innovative solutions to sustain international development, capitalizing on the common interests of Dutch and Filipinos. It will feature a series of lectures, a film festival, and a fashion design exchange programme.

“The Philippines has always been the Netherlands’ partner in pushing for sustainable international development. Our relationship has evolved into a more collaborative form where we both work together to achieve mutually beneficial economic goals. This year’s celebration is a testament to that”, said Netherlands Ambassador to the Philippines Marion Derckx.

The celebration had its official kick off in February and will continue with a lecture by visionary artist Lucas de Man in March. De Man is the founder and artistic leader of Amsterdam-based Company New Heroes, director at Het Zuidelijk Toneel, and presenter of the art television show Kunstuur. His lecture entitled “In Search of Europe” highlights his travels to 17 cities in eight countries within 30 days where he interviewed young artists and creative professionals who are trying to effect positive change.

De Man’s lecture will happen on March 15 in UP Diliman; March 17 in UP Iloilo; and March 18 in UP Cebu.

Succeeding lectures will focus on topics including green design, food security, disaster risk reduction, peace and community building, and sustainable cities and will be held in various locations in the Philippines.

A film festival featuring Dutch and Filipino films will also be held in partnership with DAKILA, an organization of artists and advocates building a movement of heroism towards social transformation. The films will highlight the two nations’ commitment in promoting human rights as well as sustainable innovations that will help resolve global challenges.

Recognizing that creativity can inspire innovation, an exchange programme for Dutch and Filipino fashion students will also take place in partnership with Slim's Fashion and Art School. The students will undergo a collaborative training to come up with a collection of combined Dutch and Filipino artistry by weaving unique fabrics and techniques from Netherlands and the Philippines. The students’ creation will then be featured in a grand culminating fashion show in October.

The celebration will set the stage for deeper and more meaningful collaboration between the Philippines and the Netherlands through creative and innovative means. “We are very excited to travel the Philippines and share this meaningful celebration with every Filipino. We believe that by inspiring innovations, we are able to do our part in promoting a progressive world,” shared Derckx.

#WeAreInternational ! BSM International Evening 2016: A Taste of Our Cultures

A massive BSM thank you to everyone who attended International Evening on Tuesday 23 February. It was a truly wonderful event—a celebration of the best of the BSM community. From the delicious food from around the world, to beautiful performances from our students and parents, and the spectacular Parade of Nations with more participants than ever, plus a Marching Band, Majorettes and Festive Higantes, it really was a show stopper.

Many people worked day and night to make it happen and it really showed on the night. We welcomed over 1,600 people to the biggest fund-raising event in the Service Learning calendar, and sold over 3,700 raffle tickets. We are hoping it will all help us to reach our fund-raising target of one million Pesos! We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and willingness to pitch in and make it such a great night for us all. Thank you Team BSM.

As well as everyone who came along to support our fund-raising event, we would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the parents, teachers, staff and students who worked so hard, both in the lead up, and on the night itself to provide us with such wonderful food, performances and Parade of Nations. We had our larger food stalls, catering for hundreds of guests, and our boutique food stalls with niche products. A great combination, with truly something for everyone. And hundreds of performers who have been rehearsing since January to provide us with spectacular entertainment. We really can’t thank you all enough.

The Food Stalls

The quality and sheer variety of food on offer was amazing. The lamb rolls and sausage sizzles at the Australia and New Zealand booth were a huge hit, as was the deliciously authentic Thai food, elegantly served by the Dusit Thani. The “Birthday Tea for a Queen” at the British Stall was a treat, with sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls alongside sweet bites including Victoria Sponge, Lemon Drizzle and Carrot cakes. The Japanese stall offered us beautiful sushi, ramen and takoyaki with their ever popular California Rolls, and even before the Indian stall could open, families were queuing up for their veg and non-veg dishes, including chicken makhanwala, mutton keema, samosas, dhal makhani and dosas.

Korea offered us traditional bulgogi, pancakes, japchae, kimchi and fried chicken. China put on a feast, with dumplings, pork buns, spring rolls, gyoza, ki-kiam, shrimp rolls and boba milk tea, which proved very popular with our students. Spain brought their traditional paella to the party, with a huge tapas selection, including chorizo, gambas, croquettas, tortilla and delicious sangria. The buffalo wings of the USA ran out early, as did their cookies and Hershey chocolates. Traditional German treats including bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad and homemade pretzels were a welcome addition, as was the bacon and cabbage, smoked salmon, cheddar, Irish coffee mousse and Irish tipples at the Irish booth.

The Middle East and North Africa served up delicious dips, including hummus and zaalook with pita, France and Switzerland gave us raclette among other delicacies, Scandinavia treated us to meatballs, canapes, cake and traditional Schnapps, and even Italy was represented with a stall run by San Remo, serving pasta dishes to suit every taste. And last but by no means least, the beautifully lit Filipino booth gave us a treat from every corner of the Philippines. Roasted lechon, a Lumpia bar, Inihaw bar, salmon belly, noodles, pork bbq, pancit canton, pancit ivatan, dirty ice cream, Filipino desserts as well as buko juice!

The Performances

The dance performances on the night truly showed the diversity, and the talents of our BSM community. From individual performers singing the Philippine and British National Anthems, dancing the Flamenco and covering Ed Sheeran; to large scale group dances, including the Indian musical medley, which spanned dances from the whole country and from the very classical to a disco-themed Bollywood number, we enjoyed every moment.

We also enjoyed learning the story of the Chinese Zodiac, a traditional German folk dance called Schuhplattler and a funky hip hop number from our primary students. The Haka was a real highlight of the evening, performed by a group of BSM students and boys from the Tuloy Foundation, as were the ballet numbers. We enjoyed a traditional ballet show, with dances from Russia, Spain, Hungary, Germany, America and Vienna, as well as a fantastic performance of “Swan Lake” and “Chariots of Fire” by a few of our Rugby Team. Pink tutus and varsity attire have never joined together to provide so much enjoyment to so many!

You’ve got to be in it to win it!

It was also a night of winners. The British Food Stall helped to bring the “British Bake Off” fun to our community event, with a competition for the best cake baked by teachers and students. A delicious chocolate cake took the crown for the adult cake and two of our Primary students shared the prize for their trifle and cupcakes. The Parade of Nations also provided the perfect opportunity to reward creativity. The costume competition gave the judges a tough task, but the 5 lucky winners this year, had beautiful outfits from their home countries of UK, Germany, Korea, South Africa and Russia.

A few visitors to the event were lucky enough to be one of our top raffle prize winners. Our generous sponsors have provided GCs for stays in some of the most beautiful parts of the Philippines, including Atmosphere Hotel & Spa in Dumaguete, Dedon Island Resort in Siargao, Bamboo Private Island in Palawan, Nobu Hotel at City of Dreams, Rieseling Boracay Beach Resort, Coco Grove in Siquijor, Coco Beach in Puerto Galera, The District Boracay, Busuanga Bay Lodge in Coron and Buri Resort & Spa in Puerto Galera. Flights to Guam on Cebu Pacific, an overnight package at The Farm at San Benito and free dining at Cafe Curieux, The Peninsula Hotel and Fairmont Makati were among our other amazing prizes.

BSM Community does it again

Of course, none of this could have happened without our truly amazing Operations staff who worked almost through the night, and the rest of the support staff, teachers, parents and students who gave their time willingly to become Bakers, Food stall helpers, Bar Staff, Raffle ticket sellers, Parade helpers, Entry ticket staff, KidZone supervisors, and help the rest of us enjoy ourselves, while raising huge sums of money for Service Learning.

A few individuals took on such large roles, they were almost given staff passes! These amazing BSM parents made the Parade of Nations such an amazing spectacle for us; kept track of everything to do with the Food Stalls, ensured our event looked beautiful, and ran the ever-popular PTA bar. We are very grateful to you all for the many hours you gave us.

Our very generous sponsors

Finally, we have a huge number of generous sponsors, who provided money, prizes and food, and helped to make sure that as much of the money raised on the night goes straight into the Service Learning Fund, and helping the Service Partners that we work with. Some came along on the night to support the event, which was great – and we hope helped to strengthen relationships between BSM and all of our partners.

Where the money goes

All of the money raised goes towards supporting BSM Service Partners. The BSM International Evening in March 2015 raised an amazing 605,000 pesos. With this money we were able to fund our work with a variety of Charity Service Partners, including:

  • PCF, a charity providing education, food aid, fair employment and health care to the poorest adults and children in and around Manila. BSM worked with PCF throughout 2015 (50,000 Pesos)
  • Financial and in-kind support to Makabata Schools Foundation, in Pasig. The school provides formal and non-formal (basic skills) education for street children and out-of-school youth (50,000 Pesos)
  • One Million Lights Foundation, providing solar lights for off-grid communities (90,000 Pesos)
  • The Fairplay for All Foundation, a charity working in Payatas, the largest dumpsite in the Philippines and home to half a million people. Their main projects include a drop-in centre, Payatas Football Club and the Fairplay cafe (10,000 Pesos).
  • Stepping Stones Foundation, a school and learning environment for children and young adults with disabilities and learning difficulties. Year 10 students renovated the garden, and painted classrooms in their new facility (20,000 Pesos)
  • School bags for disadvantaged children living in Panay Island, Visayas (40,000 Pesos)
  • Financial and in-kind support (including the purchase of a projector) for Kids International Ministries, a charity that is based in Manila, but has a number of programmes across the Philippines, providing food, shelter, education and medical attention to at-risk children in indigent communities (40,000 Pesos)
  • Building materials, expertise and manual labour for Tagaytay Central Elementary School during CAS week in May 2015. All Year 12 IB students traveled to Tagaytay, and spent 3 days working at the school to improve the teaching and learning environment (305,000 Pesos)
This year, our fund-raising total is an ambitious one million Pesos. With this money we hope to be able to make even more of a difference to the communities around us.

New album a head of full of dreams out this December 4! Coldplay's Adventure of A Lifetime on #NewMusicFridays

Coldplay have today announced the global release of their seventh album, A Head Full Of Dreams, on Friday, December 4 via Parlophone Records. It is preceded by the single, Adventure Of A Lifetime, which is available to download and stream now.

Listen to Adventure of A Lifetime on #NewMusicFridays by Topsify Philippines: http://spoti.fi/1Po0Sby

The album, recorded in Malibu, LA and London, was produced by Norwegian duo Stargate together with the band’s long-time collaborator Rik Simpson. It features more guests than any previous Coldplay record, with Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo and Merry Clayton among those appearing across its 11 tracks (12 if you count the buried treasure of the hidden track X Marks The Spot).

A Head Full Of Dreams is the widescreen follow-up to 2014’s fragile and lovelorn Ghost Stories, Coldplay’s sixth consecutive worldwide chart topper, award winner and multi-million seller. The band chose not to tour Ghost Stories and headed straight back into the studio to record A Head Full Of Dreams.

Revitalised, they’ve made an album that’s bursting with energy, colour and big, life-affirming moments such as the deliciously ebullient first single Adventure Of A Lifetime and the rocket-powered Hymn For The Weekend.

Coldplay have never enjoyed making a record more than this one. Nor have they been happier with the results.

And, this time, they plan to take it around the world.

First international production of ‘The Bridges of Madison County the musical’ opens November 20

"Things change. They always do, it's one of the things of nature. Most people are afraid of change, but if you look at it as something you can always count on, then it can be a comfort."

"I realized love won't obey our expectations, it's mystery is pure and absolute."
These are some quotes I love in a film titled "The Bridges of Madison County" sentimentalizes the four-day affair between an Italian-born, middle-aged farm wife whose passionate nature has long been dormant and a ridiculously romantic drifter. A moving love story about a photographer on assignment to shoot the historic bridges of Madison County. He meets a housewife, whose husband and children are away on a trip, and the film traces a brief affair that is never sordid but instead one of two soul mates who have met too late.

One of the most romantic stories ever written, and for the first first international production of the musical "The Bridges of Madison County" presents by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group (ATEG) is set to open on November 20 and run until December 6 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

International musical theatre stage actos MiG Ayesa and Joanna Ampil (Photo: https://instagram.com/msmyrnz/)

Leading the cast as Francesca and Robert are two iconic performers of the international musical theatre stage, Joanna Ampil and MiG Ayesa, who recently performed a great song presented to the press and guests during the media launch held at Oakwood Premier Building, ADB Ave. Ortigas.

Based on the best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY tells the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, four-day whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid.

The storyline

It’s an unforgettable story of two people caught between decision and desire, as a chance encounter becomes a second chance at so much more.

Joanna Ampil. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO/Ateg
This brand new production features gorgeous, soulful music by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) that draws upon the rich textures of Americana and folk and the sweeping, expressive balladry of classic Broadway. The Daily News hails it as “one of Broadway’s best scores in the last decade.”

Joanna Ampil, who rose to stardom in London’s West End as Kim in Miss Saigon, Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar Eponine and Fantine in Les Miz and Christmas Eve in Avenue Q, says of her latest role, “It will be my first musical in Manila after a long hiatus.

The last one was The Sound of Music in 2012. I'm hungry for a new challenge and this role of Francesca will certainly give me that challenge, stretch and creativity that I'm always craving for as an artist. Jason Robert Brown and I performed in London sometime ago way before he wrote Bridges and to be able to play a lead in one of his works will be a wonderful experience; because I know that he writes some amazing stuff.

I look forward to sharing the stage with MiG Ayesa, also. But, the thing that appealed to me the most was the idea of working for ATLANTIS for the first time and being directed by Bobby Garcia.”

MiG Ayesa CONTRIBUTED PHOTO/Ateg
MiG Ayesa, who performed the role of Stacee Jaxx in ROCK OF AGES on Broadway and in Manila, says, “I am so thrilled to be returning to the Manila stage with this production of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. The score written by Jason Robert Brown is so breathtakingly beautiful it has to be considered a modern classic, and well deserved of the Tony Awards it received.

I cannot wait to show such a different side to me, as the last time Manila audiences saw me was as the crazed rocker ‘Stacee Jaxx’ in ROCK OF AGES. The chance to be working opposite such a world class performer such as Jo Ampil, as well as under the direction of Bobby Garcia, promises to be an experience I will never forget.

This will be my second stage production with ATEG, and it has always been a labour of love in that camp. Any excuse to visit the Philippines is worth the work! I cannot think of a better way than to return with such a production as beautiful as this.”

THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY is directed by Bobby Garcia, Choreography by Cecile Martinez, Musical Direction by Ceejay Javier, Set Design by Faust Peneyra, Lighting Design by JonJon Villareal, Costume Design by Eric Pineda, Hair and Make Up Design by Johann dela Fuente and Vocal Direction by ManMan Angsico.

Bobby Garcia, who directs the musical, says. “I am thrilled to have two of the finest musical theatre performers breathe vibrant life into these iconic characters. Creating this show with Joanna and MiG has been an extremely rewarding creative experience and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing these parts.

Jason Robert Brown’s score for BRIDGES is one of the most glorious musical theatre scores in recent memory. What a joy to hear it everyday in rehearsals. It is an honor to be able to stage this show for Manila audiences”

Also in the cast are Carla Guevara-Laforteza in the dual role of Marian and Chiara, Nino Alejandro as Bud, Emeline Celis-Guinid as Marge, Jamie Wilson as Charile, Bibo Reyes as Michael and Mikkie Bradshaw as Caroline. Joining them in the ensemble are Steven Conde, Nel Gomez, Franz Imperial, Yanah Laurel, Abi Sulit and Teetin Villanueva.

The unforgettable story about love, passion and choices that BRIDGE to a second chance is brought to you by ABS-CBN, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Delta Airlines, Oakwood Premier Joy~Nostalg Center Manila, Chrysler Philippines, Retro DCG-FM, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Crossover, Mellow 94.7 Sounds Good!, Portfolio Studios, Hit Productions Inc., Center of Aesthetic Studies, and Lynelle Hair Fashion.

Concert : Lifehouse Live in Manila

Catch another remarkable and heartfelt performance and fall in love once again with Lifehouse. The series of hits of this group captured the pulse of the Filipino’s love for love songs. Though Lifehouse songs are radio friendly rock songs, their kind of music centers on love, losing someone, faith, life and survival. It is not surprising that this American rock band was able to maintain a solid fan base in this country.

With their first hit single “Hanging by A Moment”, the band was catapulted into commercial recognition. Followed by “You and Me” from their self-titled album “Lifehouse.” and strings of hits followed through these years.

Songs in their earlier albums also talks about faith and believing, which also added to their allure as Christian music. Their lyrics it “Take Me Away”, “Everything” and “Breathing” may be interpreted as an ode to God but their words were not imposing, it’s sweet, sentimental and moving. Their strength lies in their ability to effectively speak of feelings, without sounding force. This songwriting style gave them the edge over other alternative rock bands.

Since then, Lifehouse has released 7 albums. The latest “Out of the Wasteland” (released May 2015) was what Jason Wade referred to as “returning to our roots.” Even music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described it as an “immaculately constructed record, easing between insistent midtempo anthems and power ballads...” and Christian Media Cross Rhythm’s Philip Laing describing it as “overall an impressive return to form by the mainstream stalwarts.” Stalwarts, what an apt description for a band that can deliver so much emotion and meaning in their music.

Whatever It Takes, Lifehouse is one of the most played artists in the history of Hot AC with over 1.4 billion Pandora Plays to date.

Lifehouse is composed of Jason Wade in rhythmn guitar and vocals, Ben Carey in lead guitar, Rich Woolstenhulme Jr on drums and Bryce Soderberg on bass guitar.

Generating rave reviews on Ticketmaster for all their live concerts, one can’t help but be excited once again, see the band in action. Lifehouse brought the house down before and now they are coming back to a bigger stage at Mall of Asia Arena on the 8th of October, 2015 as brought to you by CCA Live Productions and Midas.

Set aside those YouTube videos and grab your coats and concert tickets! No heavy rains and extreme heat can stop this now, Lifehouse is coming!
