Uratex Dream proudly makes a mark on the global stage as the first Filipino team, and the only Southeast Asian team, to reach the final stage for the women’s division at the Red Bull Half Court World Final, held last October 19 and 20 at the Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York. This momentous achievement heralds a remarkable milestone for the basketball-loving nation in the world of competitive streetball.

The team scored victories against some of the world’s best including Australia’s “Not Fast But Furious,” the United States’ “Team SLAM,” Egypt’s “Amigos,” Ukraine’s “Prykarppattya,” and Belgium’s “On Fire.” Kaye Pingol, Afril Bernardino, Sam Harada, and Eunique Chan of Uratex Dream went up against Japan’s “Tokyo Verdy” in the final round of the competition. DepEd and Chalkboard Launch the ARAL Program: A New Initiative to Boost Literacy and Numeracy in Public Schools

In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has entered into a formal partnership with Chalkboard, a leading provider of tutoring services, to launch the Academic Remediation, Acceleration, and Livelihood (ARAL) Program. This program seeks to address the pressing challenges in literacy and numeracy faced by Filipino students, particularly in public schools.

The Department of Education taps Chalkboard’s community-based ARAL Program to help enhance literacy and numeracy skills among public school children. At the MOA signing ceremony were (L-R): Georgina Yang, DepEd Assistant Secretary; Sharon Santiago, Chalkboard Marketing Director; Leandro AƱonuevo, Chalkboard Director of Business Development and Partnerships; Sonny Angara, DepEd Secretary; Kristine Brown, Chalkboard Chief Executive Officer; and Albert Tablan, Chalkboard Chief Operating Officer.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on October 14 at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and Chalkboard CEO Kristine E. Brown. This partnership brings together the strengths of both the public and private sectors to promote improved educational outcomes for K-10 learners.

A Collaborative Effort for Quality Education

The ARAL Program embodies a synergistic collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard, leveraging their combined expertise to ensure accessible, high-quality education for all Filipino learners. This partnership aligns with the government’s mandate to provide accessible, quality education as outlined in Republic Act 8525, otherwise known as the “Adopt-A-School Act of 1998,” which encourages private sector involvement in improving public education.

During the signing ceremony, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving the department’s goals. “DepEd is committed to ensuring that quality education is accessible to all Filipino learners, and this partnership with Chalkboard is a significant step toward that goal. By working together with the private sector, we can improve the academic performance and overall well-being of our students,” he noted.

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Curriculum Powered by Advanced Technology

At the heart of the ARAL Program lies Chalkboard’s evidence-based curriculum, meticulously designed to ensure effective learning outcomes. This curriculum is grounded in the latest educational research and best practices, ensuring that each component is proven to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. A key feature of this curriculum is its integration of advanced technology to process data and inform the progress of each student.

ARAL Program Structure and Implementation

The ARAL Program employs a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to address learning deficits exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by Chalkboard, the program offers up to 25 days of targeted tutoring over six weeks, delivered through both in-person and digital platforms. This high-frequency, intensive approach is supported by research demonstrating substantial improvements in literacy and numeracy skills.

The program includes several key components:
• Personalized Learning: The tutoring sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that every learner receives the appropriate support.

• Nutritional Support: Recognizing the connection between nutrition and learning, the ARAL Program will provide nutritious snacks or meals during each tutoring session to support students’ well-being.

• Community Upskilling and Engagement: The program involves local community members as paid tutors, creating economic opportunities while fostering a supportive educational environment.

• Holistic Development: In addition to academic support, the ARAL Program aims to develop students’ socio-emotional skills, preparing them for success both in and outside of the classroom.
Chalkboard has designed the program to be scalable and sustainable, ensuring it can be replicated in different regions and communities across the Philippines. “We believe that education is the key to unlocking the full potential of every child,” said Kristine E. Brown, CEO of Chalkboard. “The ARAL Program is our contribution to improving the educational landscape of the Philippines, particularly in addressing the learning gaps that have been exacerbated by recent challenges such as the pandemic.”

Target Beneficiaries and Community Impact

The primary beneficiaries of the ARAL Program are K-10 students in public schools, particularly those struggling with literacy and numeracy. The program’s implementation will begin with pilot schools, and its success will be measured through Chalkboard’s assessment system, supplemented by DepEd’s assessment tools.

The program not only benefits students but also the wider community. Local community members will be engaged as paid tutors or food vendors, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities while contributing to the educational success of the students.

DepEd will coordinate closely with Chalkboard to select target areas and ensure smooth program implementation. Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted throughout the program’s two-year duration to ensure that it delivers tangible and verifiable results.

A Model for Future Educational Partnerships

The ARAL Program will be funded through partnerships with private sponsors, local government units, and other supporting entities. With the support of these stakeholders, the program aims to create a lasting positive impact on the academic performance and socio-emotional development of Filipino students.

This collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard is seen as a model for future public-private partnerships in education. Both parties are optimistic that the ARAL Program will not only help bridge current learning gaps but also lay the foundation for long-term educational improvements in the country.

MMDA Empowers Vitas Communities Through Waste Management Seminar

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), through the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP), continues to drive community-based solid waste management (SWM) initiatives by conducting its SWM seminar series.

This seminar aims to educate and empower communities about the environmental impact and benefits of proper solid waste management (SWM) practices, like waste segregation at source and storage, recovery and recycling, and disposal. This initiative targets to demonstrate to residents and empower barangays with the necessary knowledge on how proper waste management can be a source of economic gain, offering a real incentive for communities to adopt and sustain these practices.

During one of the recent regular Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF) operations, an extensive workshop was conducted for over 50 participants coming from Barangay 154, showcasing the practical application of SWM principles. By integrating educational activities with the MMRF operations, the MMDA highlighted the immediate and tangible benefits of proper waste management. The seminar also introduced some new techniques to increase the value of recyclable materials.

MMDA leads the SWM seminar in Barangay 154, as community leaders and participants come together with earnings and learnings from recycled materials, showing how waste can be transformed into valuable resources.

Since July 17, 2024, 769 residents from 20 barangays in Vitas have already participated, reflecting the growing community interest and engagement in sustainable waste management practices.

"The Solid Waste Management seminar exemplifies our commitment to educating and empowering communities to see the value in waste. By providing practical knowledge and showcasing real-life success stories, we aim to inspire more people to participate in sustainable waste management practices. Together, we can create a cleaner, more prosperous Metro Manila," concluded MMDA Chairman Romando Artes.

“Through initiatives like the Pera Sa Basura seminar, we are not only teaching waste management techniques but also showing communities how these practices can directly benefit their daily lives. From reducing household waste to earning through recycling, we are empowering residents to take charge of their environment and be part of a larger solution for a sustainable Metro Manila,” added MMDA SWMO Director Josias E. Syquimsiam, Jr.

Highlighting the Benefits and Community Impact

The SWM seminar focuses on showing residents that waste materials, when properly managed, can be exchanged into valuable commodities. Through the MMDA's Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF), participants learned about a "commodity exchange or barter system" where they can exchange recyclable materials for groceries and other goods. The point system employed by the MMRF ensures that residents receive fair compensation based on the market value of their recyclables, with an additional 25% added to encourage participation.

The seminar also equipped the participants with knowledge on proper handling of recyclables, including segregating and sorting the materials according to type, cleaning the recyclables, and drying them as well. Types of recyclables included plastics, glass bottles, papers, metals and electronic waste.

"Engaged Learning: Community members actively participate during the Pera Sa Basura seminar, interacting with the speaker as they discuss the benefits of recycling and proper waste management, aimed at fostering environmental responsibility and sustainable practices."

Engaging Activities and Hands-On Learning

To reinforce the practical aspects of waste management, the seminar featured interactive activities such as "Segre-game Time" and "Role-Trash Trivia."

Key activities throughout the day included:

SWM Talks: Attendees learned about the financial incentives of SWM, including how to earn money by segregating and recycling waste. Experts shared their knowledge on starting businesses using recycled materials.

Segre-game Time: An interactive game where participants shot blocks with images of solid wastes into the corresponding trash bins labeled by type. Successful players received special prizes, reinforcing the importance of proper waste segregation.

● Role-Trash Trivia: Participants spun a roulette and answered questions about waste management. Correct answers were rewarded with prizes, making the learning process fun and engaging.

These games were designed not only to educate but also to reward participants with prizes, further illustrating the immediate benefits of proper waste segregation. The hands-on experience of using the MMRF system allowed residents to directly apply what they learned, turning theory into practice.

Community Commitment and Future Plans

The seminar also served as a platform for community leaders to express their commitment to sustaining the MMRF operations. Barangay officials from the participating barangays continue to share their plans of educating residents about the economic and environmental benefits of proper waste management. They also highlighted the importance of maintaining these practices to ensure long-term sustainability and community well-being.

Mary Grace Capulong, Barangay Secretary from Barangay 154, Manila stated, “Our community has embraced the idea that waste is not just trash but a resource that can be converted into something valuable. The MMRF seminar has opened our eyes to the advantages that proper waste management can offer, and we are committed to maintaining these practices for the long-term benefit of our residents.”

The MMDA and MMFMP remain committed to continuing these efforts, with upcoming seminars scheduled for other barangays, which will further encourage residents to participate in the program, helping to build a more sustainable and prosperous Metro Manila.

MMDA Hands Over Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF) Operations to Brgy. Bayanan, Muntinlupa City

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has formally turned over the operations of the Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF) to Brgy. Bayanan, Muntinlupa City. This milestone is part of MMDA’s ongoing efforts to empower local communities in managing their waste more effectively, ensuring that the responsibility of solid waste management is both localized and sustainable.

The MMRF, an essential tool in the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP) Solid Waste Management Component 2, is designed to streamline waste segregation and recycling at the barangay level. During the turnover ceremony, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed, marking the formal transfer of responsibility from MMDA to the local government unit (LGU) and Brgy. Bayanan. This MOA highlights the barangay's commitment to uphold and operate the MMRF system, under the close monitoring and guidance of the LGU’s City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the MMDA Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO).
“The involvement of the residents, barangay, and local government is crucial to our waste management initiatives,” said Dir. Josias Syquimsiam Jr., Project Director of the MMDA Solid Waste Management Office. “The MMRF provides a structure to waste segregation, allowing communities to turn waste into valuable resources. This represents a shared commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable Metro Manila.”

Brgy. Bayanan’s adoption of the MMRF system has already led to significant achievements. Over the past two years, the barangay has collected 18,746.6 kilograms of recyclables, which were exchanged for 78,473 goods, and generated 72,154 pesos from sales to junk shops. These figures translate directly into reduced waste in landfills, cleaner streets, and a more engaged community. The barangay faced challenges such as initial resistance to the new waste segregation policies, but through continuous education and community involvement, they have successfully increased resident participation and established valuable partnerships with local recycling businesses.

Punong Barangay Engr. Jonathan “Athan” Gutierrez expressed the community's commitment to sustaining the MMRF operations: “Our barangay is dedicated to maintaining the MMRF system and expanding our waste management efforts. With the support of our residents and the guidance of MMDA and CENRO, we can achieve even greater results in waste recovery and environmental protection.”

The turnover ceremony was attended by key officials from Brgy. Bayanan, the Muntinlupa City LGU, and MMDA. Community members also participated, demonstrating their ongoing support for the MMRF initiative. The event included the formal signing of the MOA, symbolizing the strong collaboration between MMDA and Brgy. Bayanan. This partnership is expected to serve as a model for other communities as MMDA continues to roll out the MMRF program in other areas of Metro Manila, including Lower Bicutan, Batis and Corazon de Jesus, Pio and 135, San Isidro, and Daang Bakal.

The MMDA remains committed to supporting Brgy. Bayanan as it takes full control of the MMRF operations. This ongoing collaboration will ensure that the barangay continues to benefit from technical assistance and monitoring, fostering a sustainable environment for its residents. Future turnovers in other Metro Manila areas will follow a similar approach, focusing on empowering communities to manage their waste effectively and contribute to the broader goal of waste diversion and recovery across the region.

The 30th Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil recently meets various media organizations composed of TV, radio and print journalists and bloggers and he shared his vision for the future of the police force.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil

Acknowledging the dedication of police officers, particularly in tasks like combating illegal drugs, the new PNP Chief pledged to establish legal support for personnel facing court charges linked to their duties.

He also underscored the significance of prioritizing the well-being of police officers to enhance their effectiveness in serving the community.

The new Chief of Police has mandated a ban on mobile phone usage to ensure officers prioritize their duties and responsibilities to the nation and its citizens. All police personnel are reminded to refrain from unnecessary phone use while on duty, with plans to increase police presence in communities.

Under the new leadership, the PNP remains committed to upholding professionalism, integrity, and service standards to safeguard the peace and security of the Filipino people.

Chief Marbil endorses PBBM's non-violent approach to combatting drugs, citing a recent seizure of over two tons of shabu by the PNP on April 15 without any casualties.

Upon assuming office as PNP Chief, Marbil pledged to prioritize the protection of human rights in the government's intensified anti-drug efforts, aiming to minimize street killings.

FEU spearheads 1st Ph research on stillbirth, neonatal deaths

The research initiative “COntinuing care in COVID-19 Outbreak: A global survey of New expectant and bereaved parent experiences (COCOON)” is led by Far Eastern University (FEU), as the Philippines is one of its contributing countries.

“COCOON Philippines is a collaborative project between FEU and the University of Queensland. It is a global project conducted in different countries. We are also collaborating with Mater Research Institute, King’s College London, and International Stillbirth Alliance.,” said Dr. Joemer Maravilla, supervising coordinator of COCOON and adjunct faculty of the FEU Nursing Department.
FEU is primarily funding COCOON Philippines through its University Research Assistance Grant (URAG), a university-wide research time and financial assistance to FEU academic researchers. The project is currently funded until 2026 and is headed by the principal investigator Asst. Prof. Joycelyn Abiog Filoteo of the Nursing Department, with Dr. Ana Nelia Lopez Jumamil of the Psychology Department as co-leads.

The project is one of the first projects in the university wherein two disciplines collaborate: nursing and psychology. It is also the first study in the Philippines that aims to look at the social determinants of stillbirth and neonatal deaths to parents.

Maravilla explained that according to the Department of Health, the Philippine government has no specific projects on bereavement care for mothers who had experienced stillbirth and neonatal death thus, positioning COCOON Philippines in the forefront in accessing and understanding the experiences and concerns of bereaved parents and developing support services appropriate for them.

Meanwhile, according to the 2021 World Health Organization country key indicators, the Philippines has a still birth rate of 10.17 per 1000 births, and a neonatal mortality rate of 12.28 (0-27 completed days of life) per 1000 births. Moreover, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund released an article last January 2023 mentioning that the Philippines has an annual record of more than 25,000 stillborn babies.

“The focus of the country, at the moment, is to help mothers with safe deliveries but in cases of loss, we have no guidelines or in-depth data on it in the Philippines. We know there are cases of stillbirth and neonatal losses, but we do not know the solutions, the coping strategies we can introduce to help the grieving parents. And that is one of the expected outcomes of our study,” said Maravilla.

COCOON Philippines aims to include 1,100 participants, composed of pregnant women, women who experienced stillbirth and neonatal death, and their partners. The data collection involves a mixed self-administered online survey and face-to-face survey in Metro Manila and Region IV-A (CALABARZON). Research participants will receive P250 as compensation for their time taking the survey.

As of this moment, COCOON Philippines already launched it official Facebook page and will serve as the research’s avenue in looking for additional participants. If people want to join this global initiative to improve women’s health and bereavement services, or if they know of others who are willing to participate, they can visit and message https://www.facebook.com/cocoon.

Due to the sensitive nature of the study, links to online survey will not be released publicly and will only be given to the successfully screened participants.

TVJ happily announce on their Facebook page earlier today, January 5, 2024, that they won the copyright infringement and unfair competition cases against TAPE, GMA-7.

TVJ announced that they emerged victorious over the trademark battle as the Marikina court dismissed TAPE’s claims of copyright infringement and unfair competition.

The Marikina Regional Trial Court ruled in favor of the hosting trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, collectively known as TVJ, giving them the trademark ownership of “Eat Bulaga” in a case they had filed against Television and Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE).

The court’s ruling states that TAPE Inc. and GMA Network are not entitled to use the trademark, logo or theme song of “Eat Bulaga! “as well as to air episodes without proper permission and authorization.

“Wherefore, judgment is hereby rendered in favor of the plaintiffs (which include TVJ) against the defendants (TAPE and GMA Network),” Sotto read. The court in Marikina also declared that the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) should cancel TAPE’s trademarks for “Eat Bulaga!” and “EB” on all records including its website.

“Moreover, defendants… marami pang binabanggit at lahat in favor sa atin,” affirmed Tito.

Vic summarized the announcement by simply declaring their triumph, “Sa madaling salita… nanalo po tayo,” said Vic as he held back his tears amid the announcement.

“Patunay ito na sinasabi na tayo ang may-ari ng ‘Eat Bulaga,'” Tito said.

"Sa madaling salita, atin talaga ang Eat Bulaga," Vic said before ushering the production team to join them on the stage and sing the show's iconic theme song

The Facebook live concluded with TVJ and the production staff rejoicing over the “Eat Bulaga!” theme song.

The trio extended their gratitude to the Marikina Regional Trial Court, their lawyers, the production staff, family and friends, and to the Lord.

Tito said “Maraming salamat sa iyong pagtangkilik. Maraming salamat sa dasal, at unang-una sa lahat sa Panginoong Diyos. Thank you very much, Lord God.”
