Delegates of the Travel Blog Exchange (TBEX) Asia-Pacific 2016, the largest gathering of travel bloggers, writers, content media creators, and tourism industry professionals, had a feast as they discovered Philippine cuisine.

Presented by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), in coordination with NMX Events, their journey of discovery began with a 15-hour food tour where they travelled to Pampanga, “the culinary center of the Philippines”, to try iconic Filipino dishes such as lechon, sisig, chicken inasal, and sinigang. They then went to Binondo to experience the country’s Chinese culinary influence on food.

The contingent was served an array of grilled fish, prawns, squids, and clams and tasted some of the native delicacies such as barquillos, turones, kutsinta, halo-halo, rice cakes including bibingka, cassava cake, and puto.

The country’s tropical fruits were also a hit as the visitors sampled the sweetest mangoes, rambutan, lanzones and marang. Calamansi was a surprise to them for its versatility – from a refreshing fruit drink to an additional flavor to condiments.

To complete their Filipino food experience, they were served some of the country’s exotic foods including balut, pako or fern salad, and sea urchin.

“I find it very interesting that the Filipino cuisine is influenced by so many other cultures and it creates a fascinating mix,” said Maria Haase who travelled all the way from Germany. “This food trip was very interesting and inspiring for me.”

Further making Filipino meals fun, the delegates experienced boodle feasts, which urged them not only to share their food but to interact and converse with one another. Trying Filipino dishes in this unique way was something the first-time visitors were able to enjoy. “This is such a simple pleasure to enjoy. It’s amazing that we get the time to eat together. I love this kind of culture,” said Chicago-native Rosemary Kimani.

World-class Filipino entertainers welcome international delegates at PHITEX 2016

Some of the Philippines’ multi-awarded entertainers wowed international delegates and guests at the recently concluded Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) 2016 dinner reception held at the Marriott Grand Ballroom. PHITEX is the country’s biggest and longest-running annual travel trade event presented by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB). The event treated more than 200 tourism buyers from across 35 countries to a series of incredible performances showcasing Filipino musical talent and prowess.

Headlining the impressive roster was the Junior New System, one of Asia’s Got Talent season 1 grand finalists and recently hailed as Senior Grand Performer of the World. Other performers were the Show Violinist Juleous who garnered 6 gold medals at this year’s World Championship of the Performing Arts, and the multi-awarded soloist Candice Adea together with her highly-acclaimed ballet dancer and choreographer sister, Carissa.

The vocal performances were also astounding. Baihana, a multi-awarded all-female jazz trio composed of Anna Graham, Krina Cayabyab and Mel Torre, sang with unique and refreshing harmony, while Raniella Guevarra, a young Filipina singer on the rise, rendered a heartfelt serenade.

The night would not be complete without a cultural show. A colorful display of lights was presented by the Buganda Dancers and Drumbeaters, a 36-year old festival dance company. Whiplash Dance Company, the country’s top contemporary dance group also dominated the stage with their energy. Finally, Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild, the country’s best promoter of Philippine Arts and Culture, performed some of the country’s cultural folk dances.

Another module takes the buyers a trip to Southern Luzon and experience exotic beauty of beaches nestled against the jungle.

Buyers can further discover the wonders of Palawan which is recently named as the Best Island in the World. They can ride a paddleboat to Puerto Princesa Underground River, considered one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Some buyers can also travel to the east where Bicol, a region for adventures – volcanoes, beaches, coves, and lakes - will also be awaiting the guests.

The Cebu/Bohol post tour will give the buyers an opportunity to catch a glimpse of historical landmarks, a taste of lechon in Cebu, and an iconic view of the majestic Chocolate Hills in Bohol. They can also take a selfie with tarsiers in Bohol.

For a unique mix of diversity, heavenly retreat and exciting adventure, buyers may also opt to join the Davao module.
