Is something burning in the kitchen? According to the National Statistics Board, 25.9 percent of fire incidents nationwide from 2010 to 2013 were caused by unattended open flame. 

“As March is recognized as Fire Prevention Month, it is the perfect time for homeowners to fireproof the most delicious room in the house—the kitchen,” says RJ Buenaventura, Philips General Manager for Consumer Lifestyle. 

The kitchen is one of the biggest fire hazards inside the house, making it a top priority in terms of home safety. Last year alone, more than 150,000 of home fires were said to have started inside the kitchen.

But with simple easy-to-do tips, RJ says you can make a big difference in creating a safer home for you to live, work, play, and cook in.

Keep your eyes on the pan

“Neglect is the primary cause of kitchen accidents,” says JC Gallegos, Business Development Manager for Philips Kitchen Appliances. “Keep your attention on what you are cooking and try to avoid leaving it unattended.”

Unattended cooking—particularly open flame—causes more injuries, deaths, and property damage than all other causes of home fires. 

Have a fire extinguisher within reach

Where you place your fire extinguisher is very important. Fire safety hazards recommend storing it 10 feet away from the stove, preferably in a place near the kitchen exit. 

Its weight should also be considered. Make sure that everyone in the family can lift the fire extinguisher and knows how to use it.

Keep the kitchen clean

Good housekeeping plays a big role in ensuring kitchen safety. Dispose rubbish, paper, and other flammable materials properly. Also, try to avoid storing items near or on the stovetop. Since these surfaces generate a lot of heat, it can quickly start fires from wrappings and product packages.

Trick or treat? With the help of Philips and seasoned foodie Nancy Reyes-Lumen, you can learn new tricks to prepare delectable treats this Halloween. The two have prepared a list of mouth-watering recipes to make this year’s celebration more festive.

“Halloween has become a favorite occasion among Filipinos,” describes RJ Buenaventura, General Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle.

“Halloween parties and trick-or-treats never fail put anyone in a mood.”

Business Development Manager for Philips Domestic Appliances Pia Umayam has an advice for anyone who wants to make this season extra special. “You can add a creative twist to your Halloween party with home-made goodies that your friends and loved ones will surely appreciate.”

Tasty Rice in a Pumpkin

Stray away from the usual candies and chocolates and surprise your loved ones with something that can leave them truly satisfied. This recipe is definitely a great and healthy twist to your regular jack-o-lanterns.

Ingredients:

Pumpkin

150gm piece of chorizo, chopped (add more if preferred)

100gms onion, chopped

50gms garlic, minced

2 chicken cubes

1 medium green bell pepper, diced

2 medium red bell peppers, diced

1 ½ cups of rice

2 cups water

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

Freshly cracked peppercorn

Pumpkin pulp

Nancy’s Tip: 

“The secret to this recipe lies in the preparation of the pumpkin. I recommend the Philips Rice cooker because of its big pot and 3D heating feature that evenly distributes heat for better cooking.”

Steaming the Pumpkin:

1. Choose a pumpkin that will fit into the pot of your Philips Rice Cooker. Depending on your preference, you can put it whole or as a big wedge.

2. Cover ¼ of the pumpkin with water and steam-cook till tender. Depending on the size of the pumpkin, it should be tender after about 20-25 minutes.

3. Remove the seeds and the pulp once pumpkin is tender. This will make the pumpkin firmer even when fully steamed.

4. Scrape off some of the pulp and chop to add to the stuffing later.

Pumpkin Stuffing:

1. Put all the ingredients together in the rice cooker.

2. Cook in one cycle till rice is done.

3. Check taste and adjust seasonings.

4. Keep warm till ready to serve.

Zombie Gingerbread Cookies

Give zombies a jolt of life by turning them into delicious desserts! This zombie gingerbread cookie recipe will surely be a favorite of both kids and kids-at-heart.

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/3 teaspoon baking salt

¼ teaspoon salt

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

Procedure:

1. Blend the first 4 ingredients together.

2. Cream butter till light yellow.

3. Add sugar gradually in ¼ cup portions.

4. Beat after every addition till light and fluffy.

5. Beat the egg.

6. Then blend in 1/3 of the flour mixture.

7. When smooth, blend in the rest of the flour mixture to create the cookie dough.

8. Flatten and wrap in clear plastic then chill in the ref.

9. When it is firm enough, flatten and cut into gingerbread shapes.

10. Bake in Philips Airfryer at 180 Cfor about 10-12 minutes

Nancy’s Tips:
