C1 Originals : "Miss Bulalacao"

MISS BULALACAO

Welcome to Punta Bulalacao.

On the eve of its fiesta, a teenage drag queen joins a beauty pageant and is asked what the essence of being a woman is. His answer: “Motherhood” An ominous answer, it turns out, as a strange encounter in the jungle changes his life in unexpected ways.

Ara Chawdhury’s debut feature “Miss Bulalacao” is about the stranglehold of tradition, the sinister dynamics of small towns, religious hypocrisy and being careful what you wish for. With aliens. It is also a comedy. Filtered as it is through Chawdhury’s own experiences of community politics growing up in the island of Biliran.

“The setting is what makes the film unique, “ Chawdhury says, “We tried to make this as true to the culture of Region 8, specially since Yolanda, a lot of attention has been placed on that region and I feel like it doesn’t really reflect the specific culture of the people that live in the storm belt of the country. I wanted to feature the resilience of the sprit of thepeople there, the reason they’re a close-knit community, the reason they hold on to certain beliefs even if the rest of the country might think they’re backwards.”

Performance artist Russ Ligtas plays the title role with Nanette Inventor, Tessie Tomas and Mon Confiado.

“Miss Bulalacao” will have its gala night on November 11 (Wednesday) in Trinoma Cinema One at 7:40PM. It will also screen during Cinema One Originals 2015, which starts on November 9 until the 17th, at select Trinoma, Glorietta, SM Megamall and Resorts World cinemas.

C1 Originals : "Dayang Asu"

DAYANG ASU

There’s money in the quarry business. Obscene amounts of money. And where there’s that much money, there’s corruption. Legalized corruption at that. Tonton is the son of a quarry master, a newbie thrust into a world he can’t quite fathom nor navigate eventually sucks him in like a vortex and forces him to make a decision that would change his life forever.

Bor Ocampo call his debut feature “Dayang Asu”, which centers on the conflicts and tensions that simmer between a father and son, his homage to the Pinoy action flick and in many ways, it does genre proud, particularly because Ocampo nuances the genre tropes with tinges of noir-ish anxiety and pathos and local color, something Ocampo, who grew up in the film’s Pampanga setting, knows a little too well. Ricky Davao and Junjun Quintana play the father and son at the dark heart of the film, respectively.

“Dayang Asu” will have its gala night on November 10 (Tuesday) in SM Megamall Cinema One at 7:20PM. It will also screen during Cinema One Originals 2015, which starts on November 9 until the 17th, at select Trinoma, Glorietta, SM Megamall and Resorts World cinemas.

Shaina Magdayao and Matteo Guidicelli in Cinema One's “Single\Single”

Cinema One and The Philippine Star’s first project, “Single\Single” with Kapamilya stars Shaina Magdayao and Matteo Guidicelli.

Shaina Magdayao and Matteo Guidicelli
Shaina and Matteo are teaming up for the first time in an original cable TV series that merges engaging comedy and relevant issues for the urban singles living in a complicated, modern world on Cinema One this August 29 (Saturday) at 8PM.

“Single\Single” Team with Shaina Magdayao, Matteo Guidicelli and Cinema One and The Philippine Star during the media launch held at the Abs-Cbn Bldg., Quezon City, August 13, 2015.
“Single\Single”, Cinema One and The Philippine Star’s first project, is the cable channel’s first TV series that focuses on issues ranging from quarter-life crises to relationship dilemmas in a digital world. More importantly, the series aims to underscore the importance of handling finances, career path planning, and having a work-life balance for the urban millennial.

Cinema One's first breakthrough series follows the story of Joee (Shaina) and Joey (Matteo), two single strangers who will exchange sparks or non-sparks as an odd couple forced to share an apartment for practical reasons and tries to answer the question, “when strangers have no choice but to share the rent, will it be a disaster or a happy ever after?”

As a first of its kind project on Philippine cable TV, “Single\Single” combines the power of cable and print media to talk to Filipino millennials about how to cope as a single individual in an entertaining format. Each week after an episode airs on Cinema One, in-depth discussion about wealth management will be provided in the Philippine Star’s Business Lifestyle section by wealth management expert and inspirational speaker, Francis Kong.

The show’s lead stars also serve as role models to millennials. Shaina, who grew up in showbiz, is one of the many young celebrities who has managed her finances well. She owns several business ventures, including a salon and a summer camp for kids. Meanwhile, Matteo who hails from Cebu, also has a background in entrepreneurship as his family has established businesses in his hometown.

Also joining the cast of “Single\Single” are Cherie Gil who plays Matteo’s single mom in a very offbeat parent role; award-winning Cinema One Originals actress Anna Luna as Shaina’s career-driven buddy; and theater actor Brian Sy as Shaina’s gay friend. Indie favorites Mara Lopez and Matt Daclan will also be completing the cast in guest roles.

“Single\Single” is under the direction of international award-winning independent cinema director Pepe Diokno, who also marks his first venture into cable TV and comedy. Palanca winner Lilit Reyes serves as the series’ writer, while film producer of the highest grossing Pinoy indie movie “That Thing Called Tadhana,” Bianca Balbuena produces the series.

Cinema One aims to support and uphold Filipino produced movies and shows by screening Filipino movies and showcasing Filipino filmmaking talent through Cinema One Originals. It is also a pioneer in the cable industry through its originally produced shows that give an in-depth discussion about the film and entertainment industry such as “Inside The Cinema Circle” and “CinemaNews.” It belongs to the family of cable channels under Creative Programs, Inc. (CPI), a subsidiary of ABS-CBN.

“Single\Single” premieres this August 29 on Cinema One. New episodes will air every Saturday at 8PM with replays on Wednesdays at 830PM and Sundays at 10PM.

Open Air Cinema One : Music by Day, Movies by Night at The Fields Nuvali

Cinema One Launches New Outdoor Screening Event last May 1, Labor Day.

In partnership with Nuvali Night Sky Cinema, Cinema One, the home of the biggest blockbuster movies launches its newest outdoor screening event featuring Cinema One Originals “That Thing Called Tadhana,” “Shift,” and John Carney’s “Begin Again” at The Fields, Nuvali on Labor day (May 1).

The Labor day event been split into two celebrations with music filling the air by day, and movies screening all night long. Hosted by John Lapus, “Open Air Cinema One” showcases three feel good films starting with the award winning Yeng Constantino and Felix Roco helmed film “Shift” at 5:30PM followed by Keira Knightley-Mark Ruffalo starrer, "Begin Again”, and for the last show of the night, the highest local grossing indie film,  “That Thing Called Tadhana” shown at 10:30 PM.

“Shift” is a 2013 Cinema One Originals entry by Siege Ledesma that follows the story of Estela (Yeng Constantino), a call center agent who is struggling to have a sense of direction in life. She meets and befriends co-worker Trevor (Felix Roco), a supposed homosexual and manages to create a charming connection with him. As Estela and Trevor’s friendship blossoms, complications arise.

Meanwhile, “That Thing Called Tadhana” by Antoinette Jadaone chronicles the story of two Filipino strangers, Mace (Angelica Panganiban) and Anthony (JM de Guzman) who bump into each other at Rome’s airport. At the check-in counter, a struggling Mace who made countless attempts to pass baggage load requirements was saved with the help of Anthony. After landing in Manila, the two eventually decide to travel together up north to Baguio and Sagada in the quest to search for the answer to the question, “where do broken hearts go?”

The international box office hit, “Begin Again” directed by John Carney is anchored on music against the backdrop of the musically cultured city of New York. Keira Knightley portrays singer-songwriter Gretta who recently called it quits with her boyfriend, musician Dave Kohl (Adam Levine). Gretta is then discovered by record label executive Dan (Mark Ruffalo) at a bar wherein Gretta was forced to play on stage by a friend. Amazed with Gretta’s talent, Dan offers to produce Gretta’s music to make her as one of the talents in his company. In an effort to create a demo that will persuade Dan’s business partner to sign Gretta, the two begin recording Gretta’s music in various locations around New York City.

Cinema One announces final 10 films for upcoming C1 originals festival

Cinema One has finally announced its selection of ten films for the upcoming Cinema One Originals Festival.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary of constantly supporting the growth of the local film industry, Cinema One has chosen to allocate a budget of P2-million for the production of these ten selected films, all carefully chosen out of numerous submissions upon its call for entries during the festival’s previous year.

The ten films chosen were those by directors Jay Abello, Nash Ang, Kanakan Balintagos, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, Eduardo Dayao, Alec Figuracion, Antoinette Jadaone, Malay Javier, Paolo O’Hara, and Remton Siega Zuasola.

Jay Abello’s film entitled “Red” is an action film of how mere gossip rocked a town’s circuit of local drug dealers, junkies, and vagabonds in Bacolod. Red, a legendary fixer in the underground world of Visayas, is called to patch things up—but he soon finds himself framed for the very thing he was asked to repair, forced into decisions that put his life at stake.

Nash Ang brings the film “Seoul Mates” to this year’s festival. “Seoul Mates” is a sweet comedy of a man and woman who fatefully meet on a bridge just at the moment that they attempt to jump from it. They arrange and schedule their deaths with each other, but something goes wrong. They fall in love—a situation further complicated because the two are not exactly the traditional man and woman tandem. Set in Seoul, “Confessions” is a Koreanovela in the making.

“Abel/Cain” is what director Kanakan Balintagos is bringing to the table this year. An adaptation of Auraeus Solito’s play entitled Esprit de Corps in the 1980’s about the game of seduction and ranks in the ROTC, “Abel/Cain” is a queer story of two cadets and their pursuit to outwit a corrupt Major Marcus for his position.

Director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo presents the film “Lorna,” a midlife comedy drama of a woman’s romantic life—a story of being alone, growing old, looking for love, and moving on. Lorna, already in her 60’s, finds an online lover and an old flame that will turn her life upside down. But at her age, is love too late for a woman like Lorna?

The film “Violator” is a psycho-horror set in the brink of an apocalypse by director Eduardo Dayao. In it, three policemen with nowhere to go and everything to lose meet a mysterious stranger in their precinct that will force them to confront a darker secret amidst them.

Director Alec Figuracion brings “Bitukang Manok” to life. A horror in the tradition of Twilight Zone, the film shows four cars stranded in the EME road to Bicol. A group of travelers soon realize that they are driving in circles and decide to work together to break free—but slowly, they find out that stranger forces are at work.

“That Thing Called Tadhana,” a romance-comedy in the tradition of Before Sunrise is what Antoinette Jadaone has created. The films asks the questions “Where do broken hearts go?” and tells the story of a woman struggling to meet airline baggage requirements who meets a man who comes to her aid. Both in despair out of love, they form a charming friendship that will take them to Sagada in their attempts to mend each other’s hearts.

Malay Javier will be presenting “Di Sila Tatanda,” a sci-fi teen flick about the Pangasinan U.F.O. sightings in the 90’s, where three childhood friends enter a love trapezoid with an alien. This is how an alien shows what it means to be truly human-in-love, in its pursuit to mate with a girl whose heart belongs to two human friends.

“The Housekeepers” by Paolo O’Hara is a comedy of errors of a couple instructed to babysit a kidnapped child. However, when the kidnappers order them to kill the baby, they flee instead and raise him as their own.

Director Remton Siega Zuasola brings “Soap O Pera,” the story of a modus gone wrong, wherein a couple seduces foreigners to visit the Philippines with the promise of marriage to con them for their money. This is a comic drama about how a local soap opera brings the scheming couple and their foreign victim closer as they play family to support their sick son whose only relief is the fantasy world of Ramini, his favorite television hero.

The Cinema One Originals is an annual independent film festival produced by the ABS-CBN-owned cable channel, Cinema One. To date, the festival has produced international award-winning films like Jerrold Tarog’s “Confessional” (2007), Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s “Imburnal” (2008) and Antoinette Jadaone’s “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” (2011) and other internationally acclaimed films such as “Shift” (2013), “The Dream of Eleuteria” (2010), and “Ang Paglalakbay sa Gabing Madilim” (2012) among others.

Cinema One Presents "It Takes a Man and a Woman"

Cinema One, the country's number one cable channel, is bringing the highest grossing Filipino romance film to television for the first time, with its premiere airing of Cathy Garcia-Molina's "It Takes a Man and a Woman," airing on Sunday (February 2).

"It Takes a Man and a Woman," which stars the blockbuster love team of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, is the third installment in the "A Very Special Love" film series, wherein John Lloyd and Sarah reprise their roles as Miggy Montenegro and Laida Magtalas.

It follows the life of Miggy and Laida after their break up, which occurred after the events in the second film. Miggy, at this point, is in a relationship with Belle (Isabelle Daza), while Laida is now a fiercer version of herself after having lived in the United States.

When Laida comes home, she gets on board with the publishing arm of Miggy's company, and the two struggle to co-exist in the same workplace after having broken up.

In their attempts to go against or with each other, the two fall into a series of events that lead them to realizing the real definition of true love.

"It Takes a Man and a Woman" received a remarkable critical response, even reaching the point of having its theatrical run extended. It has grossed over P400 million during its run in Philippine cinemas and over P200 million overseas.

The film was graded "A" by the Cinema Evaluation Board and a rating of "GP" by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Bibsy M. Carballo of Philippine Star said, "It Takes A Man & A Woman answered the challenge of offering a more mature perspective, according to direk Cathy, transforming a girl and a boy into a man and a woman with the capability of love and forgiveness, beyond just the 'kilig' factor."

The film was also notably a breakthrough for Sarah as an actress. Tito Genova Valiente, chairman of the Urian Awards (Filipino Film Critics Circle) praised her acting, saying, "There are gems in her performance as Laida. Note the moments when the camera catches her in doubt. See her hurting with a slightest twitch of lips. Those subtleties, not expected by this writer, is good news. This girl knows how to act before a camera."

Catch "It Takes a Man and a Woman" as it airs on television on the country's number one cable channel, Cinema One on Sunday (February 2) at 8:00pm, as part of the channel's Blockbuster Sundays movie block.

Cinema One puts Kathniel in the spotlight !

Starting things off with today’s hottest teen love team, Cinema One gives a special treat to its viewers with a month-long feature on Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla’s hit movie “Must Be Love”.

Produced by Star Cinema and directed by Dado Lumibao, “Must Be Love” is the first solo film of the teen tandem where they were cast in a leading role, following their appearances as part of star-studded casts in “24/7 in Love” and “Sisterakas”. It was shot in different locations around the Philippines, including Cebu and Laguna—and was even taken abroad to Berlin, Germany.

The film tells the story of two childhood friends, Patricia (Kathryn Bernardo) and Ivan (Daniel Padilla). Growing up together and discovering the changes that come with age, different possibilities open up for the two.

As they get older, Patricia begins to realize that she has feelings for her best friend, but begins to question if he feels the same way. Things get even more complicated when her cousin Angel (Liza Soberano) comes into the picture—and Ivan starts to show interest in a different girl instead.

With the two teen actors in the leading roles, “Must Be Love” served as a benchmark for the two. It even served as a platform for Daniel Padilla’s hit song “Nasa Iyo Na Ang Lahat,” which was the film’s theme song, to skyrocket to the top of the music hit charts.

In a review from pep.ph, the film was labeled as “a welcome alternative to the slew of teen movies and romantic flicks,” setting it apart from what the Filipino audience had grown accustomed to. Writer Jennifer Dugena of the website said, “It is also a perfect teen movie recommended not just for KathNiel fans but also for adults… ‘Must Be Love’ is a rare film that is cute and light as much as it is serious and heavy.”

Don’t miss out on the KathNiel love team in “Must Be Love” airing on Cinema One this month. Catch it on January 18 at 8:00pm, January 24 at 3:00pm, and January 28 at 7:00pm.

Submission for Cinema One Originals 2014 Entries

Cinema One is still accepting entries for the film festival that showcases the most original of visions and most unique of voices, as it recently announced an extension in the deadline for submission until February 14, 2014 Friday.

All submissions should be complete full scripts for a narrative feature length film.

The film script should tackle a commercially viable Filipino story with universal themes. The filmmaker submitting these script entries should be ready to discuss the sellable and marketable points of the proposed film project.

From all submissions, ten finalists will be selected and will be given a production budget of P2 million each, the highest budget given by any institution or festival in the country.

This year's Cinema One Originals Festival will mark the festival's first decade, marking years of taking the work of independent filmmakers to higher heights.

Some films that have made a breakthrough in the world of Philippine Cinema by reaching screens all around the world were part of the past years’ Cinema One Originals lineups, such as “Mariposa” which was shown at the Far East Film Festival in Italy, and “Mater Dolorosa”, "Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na", "Alamat ni China Doll" and “Big Boy” which made their international premieres at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Other films that took off from past Cinema One Originals festivals also received an array of awards, including "Sa North Diversion Road", "Ang Huling Balyan Ng Buhi", "Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay", "Di Ingon 'Nato (Not Like Us)", "Rome & Juliet", "Confessional", "Imburnal", "Altar", 'Wanted: Border", "Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria", "Baybayin", "Mamay Umeng", and "Ang Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim".

OSCAR ENTRY “ILO ILO” MAKES PHILIPPINE DEBUT THIS NOVEMBER

Singapore’s entry into next year’s Oscars, “ILOILO,” which touches upon the challenges and experiences faced by the Philippines’ overseas workers, particularly those who acquire jobs as household helps for foreign families, finally hits local theaters as it premieres at Robinsons Galleria this Wednesday (November 13) as a guest film in the Cinema One Originals Festival 2013.

Acclaimed Singaporean director Anthony Chen once grew up under the care of a Filipina his family had hired as a maid when he was still a little boy. In his Academy Award-nominated film “ILOILO,” his experiences in growing up under her care are somehow reflected in the story of a child named Jiale (Koh Jia Ler) and his family’s household help, Terry (Angeli Bayani).

“ILOILO” details the story of a Filipina who accepts work as a maid for an ordinary family living in a tenement in Singapore. In taking upon this new chapter in her life, she quickly discovers her biggest challenge: the precocious ten-year old son of her employers.

The boy tries to make her life a living hell by being difficult, disobedient, and rude—even framing her for acts that aim at her getting deported. Other challenges arise as the boy’s family struggles with their finances. However, with determination and tough love, the relationship between the two slowly changes, ultimately putting things far greater than employment on the line.

“ILOILO” stars Angeli Bayani, Koh Jia Ler, Yeo Yann Yann, and Tian Wen Chan.

The film was previously screened in Berlin, Rotterdam, Pusan, London, Sao Paulo, Stockholm, Sydney, Montreal, Melbourne, Chicago, and Hawaii.

At the Cannes Film Festival, “ILOILO” received a 15-minute standing ovation.

Critic David Ollerton of The London Film Review referred to the film as being “quietly brilliant,” calling it a “gentle, subtle film that is a worthy debut”. Variety.com’s Maggie Lee, on the other hand, found “ILOILO” remarkable as it was “brimming with love, humor and heartbreak.”

The premiere night of “ILOILO” is a special feature of this year’s Cinema One Originals Festival.

The Cinema One Originals Festival, which runs until the 19th of November, features fifteen competing full-length feature films by top Philippine talents in the independent filmmaking scene. Catch the fifteen films of Cinema One Originals this year at Glorietta, Robinsons Galleria, and Trinoma.

Unexplored tales showcased in Cinema One Plus' five films this November

Cinema One Plus as launched during press conference last October 29 held at the ELJ Bldg., Abs-Cbn.
The Cinema One Originals Festival, now on a bigger and better 9th year of putting the spotlight on the best of independent filmmakers and their wide array of creations, surges another burst of energy into the Filipino movie industry with a total of fifteen full length feature films, with five of which comprising Cinema One Plus, the first of two in the festival’s main categories.

Among the directors that are part of this year’s Cinema One Plus, the festival’s P2M budget category, are Borgy Torre for “Kabisera”, Mes de Guzman for “Sitio”, Miko Livelo for “Blue Bustamante”, Adolfo Alix, Jr. for “Alamat ni China Doll”, and Keith Sicat for “Woman of the Ruins”.

Here are the five films of Cinema One Plus.

“Kabisera”

“Kabisera” by Director Borgy Torre is an action film that details one man’s transformation from a naive, innocent character into a ruthless father and friend upon finding a huge amount of illegal substances that he can easily make money out of. Starring Joel Torre, Art Acuña, Bing Pimentel, Bernard Palanca, Ketchup Eusebio, and Meryll Soriano, “Kabisera” ultimately leads to the question: If given the chance to make big bucks out of something as dangerous as dealing drugs, what would you do?

“Sitio”

On the other hand, Director Mes de Guzman’s entry into the Cinema One Originals Festival this year is a psychological thriller. Entitled “Sitio”, it tells the tale of upper middle class siblings who try to find the meaning of a simpler life by moving from the city to the province. However, unknown to them are the terrors and threats that really lie in the rural landscape. “Sitio” stars John Prats, Ria Garcia, Anja Aguilar, Arnold Reyes, Biboy Ramirez, RK Bagatsing, and Jess Mendoza.

“Blue Bustamante”

Director Miko Livelo brings to the table a family drama comedy this year entitled “Blue Bustamante”. His entertaining submission to the festival is about an OFW who suddenly finds himself jobless in Japan. Looking for anything to do, he meets a Sentai director who convinces him to be a double for Blue Force, a superhero character in an upcoming Japanese superhero show. “Blue Bustamante” stars Joem Bascon, Jun Sabayton, Dimples Romana, and Jhiz Deocareza.

“Alamat ni China Doll”

In Adolfo Alix, Jr.’s “Alamat ni China Doll”, a 27-year old named Helen is keen on graduating from high school and starting a new life—but once she gets her hands on a recently published article on the truth about “China Doll”, she realizes details that shed light on her haunting past. With its screenplay written by Lav Diaz, “Alamat ni China Doll” stars Angelica Panganiban, Cherry Pie Picache, Cesar Montano, Phillip Salvador, Anita Linda, Allan Paule, and Evelyn Vargas.

“Woman of the Ruins”

“Woman of the Ruins” by Director Keith Sicat is a work of science fiction that brings its viewers to a storm-ravaged island that has seen its share of tragedy. There, a person who has been assumed dead mysteriously reappears and ignites a frenzy of reactions, ranging from ecstatic religious fervor to cold, chilling fear. Sicat’s film this year stars Allesandra de Rossi, Art Acuna, Chanel Latorre, Elizabeth Oropesa, Peque Gallaga, Moises Magisa, Joe Gruta, and Rolando Inoencio.

Don’t miss out on the 9th Cinema One Originals Festival, running from November 11 to 19 at Glorietta, Trinoma, and Robinson’s Galleria. Also watch out for Cinema One Originals Currents, the festival's P1M category which features ten films this year.

The Cinema One Originals Festival is brought to you by the country’s number one cable channel, Cinema One. In a Cinema One film, absolutely anything is possible.
