Grit, Family, and a Dream: How a Nigerian Techie Built a Startup Making an Impact in the Philippines

PLDT Enterprise’s ROI’d to Success podcast features the inspiring journey of CTO Bimbo Adewoyin of Doublesquare Networks Inc. and how technology helped bridge regional gaps in business and communication

In the newest episode of ROI’d to Success, a podcast by PLDT Enterprise in collaboration with Hustleshare, tech entrepreneur and CTO Bimbo Adewoyin shares how Doublesquare Networks Inc. went from humble beginnings to becoming a trusted provider of wireless equipment, structured cabling, and surveillance system solutions for organizations across the Philippines.

Founded with a mission to deliver technology solutions to local businesses, Doublesquare Networks began as a small operation focused on surveillance systems and network design. Today, it supports enterprise clients, schools, LGUs, and commercial establishments—built on years of deep expertise in infrastructure deployment and project leadership.

But it was Adewoyin’s early interest in tech and foundational mindset that laid the foundation and early stages for the future of the company.

“Back in Nigeria, my mom ran a school, and one day, an American friend of hers donated old computers. At the time, I was more interested in cars, but my older brother began tinkering with the computers, and I got curious. Watching a printer work for the first time felt like magic. My brother later brought me to computer cafes, where he was deeply into programming—and that’s really where my passion for technology began,” shared Adewoyin.

Adewoyin’s journey—from growing up in Nigeria and moving to the Philippines for university, to building his startup with no capital and a baby on the way—is yet another shining example of resourcefulness meeting purpose. Fueled by necessity and passion, he gradually built out a team, invested in in-house tech monitoring systems, and gained the trust of large organizations by solving one infrastructure problem at a time.

“I started by renting a small office in Cubao and incorporating the business right away. At that point, I was on my own and wondering, ‘What’s next?’ What kept me going was my son—he became my biggest motivation. My dad told me to double my hustle because I have a family to provide for, and that really pushed me forward. Soon after, my cousin from Bicol joined me, and we began canvassing for projects. Eventually, I built a team, secured more clients, and started distributing and educating people about Ubiquiti products,” said Adewoyin.

As client demand grew, so did the need for stable, enterprise-grade internet to support operations, training, and 24/7 customer support. The company turned to PLDT Enterprise, which provided iGate and broadband solutions to ensure uninterrupted coordination between field teams and clients.

“Reliable connectivity is the backbone of our operations. With PLDT Enterprise’s connectivity solutions, we’ve enhanced our customer service and boosted sales through seamless, stable communication,” he added.

Before partnering with PLDT Enterprise, the company struggled with frequent communication disruptions and project coordination delays. With PLDT Enterprise’s stable and dedicated internet access in place, Doublesquare saw a measurable 20% improvement in sales and client retention—a direct result of reduced downtime and faster response cycles. But these impressive results don’t mean the hustle will slow down in any way for the future.

“These days, I focus on exploring new technologies and innovations that can help the business grow. I’ve come to trust my team with day-to-day operations—they manage everything from client monitoring to service delivery, especially for our enterprise accounts, which require 24/7 support. We meet regularly to align, but I’ve empowered them to take the lead. It’s a collaborative environment—our brainstorming sessions often lead to great outcomes. With such a capable team in place, I now have the time and headspace to seek out fresh opportunities for growth and improvement,” Adewoyin shared.

As the company looks ahead, Adewoyin continues to invest in expanding their service footprint, nurturing tech talent, and helping bridge the connectivity divide—especially for clients in regional and underserved areas.

“Doublesquare Networks’ story is a powerful example of how technology and entrepreneurship can transform lives and communities. At PLDT Enterprise, we are proud to support visionaries like Bimbo Adewoyin by delivering the reliable and scalable connectivity solutions that help businesses grow, innovate, and bridge the digital divide,” said Jay Lagdameo, Vice President and Head of Enterprise Revenue Group at PLDT Enterprise.

Agri Exim: Growing Global Impact from the Heart of Mindanao

How a purpose-driven agricultural exporter is transforming lives—powered by digital connectivity from PLDT Enterprise

A harvest rooted in purpose. A local farmer prepares freshly gathered coconuts in one of Agri Exim Global Philippines, Inc.’s sourcing sites in Mindanao. By supporting smallholder farmers and connecting them to global markets, Agri Exim, powered by PLDT Enterprise’s digital solutions, continues to champion sustainable agriculture and community-driven growth across the region.

At the southern tip of the Philippines, a company rooted in coconut trees and sustainability is making waves far beyond Mindanao. From its humble beginnings to its expansion into Davao, Agri Exim Global Philippines, Inc. has grown into a thriving exporter of organic and conventional agricultural products, connecting local farmers to markets around the world.

Driven by a global vision for sustainability, Agri Exim operates with a triple bottom line approach—economic, social, and environmental—across its entire organic value chain. Its mission is to empower smallholder farmers through ethical sourcing, responsible production, and transparent governance. With over 100,000 certified organic farmers across multiple continents and a steadfast commitment to ESG standards, Agri Exim aims to be the most trusted provider of organic and sustainable food ingredients worldwide. In the Philippines alone, Agri Exim works with over 4,500 certified organic farmers cultivating more than 17,500 hectares of land under its organic program.

Founded as a subsidiary of India-based company, Suminter India Organics, Agri Exim has made its mark by sourcing and processing a wide range of high-value goods—including VCO (virgin coconut oil), coconut flour, Coconut water and CWC (Coconut Water Concentrate), Coconut milk and cream, and RBD (Refined, Bleached, & Deodorized) oil. But more than just its product lines, Agri Exim’s success is defined by the deep mission at its core: to support smallholder farmers and champion sustainable agriculture in the Philippines.

“I believe in our vision of helping the entire community. We have generated over a thousand jobs in less than 10 years. I think that’s the top reason why I am proud to be with Agri Exim,” said Kareen Grace Lacorte, Lead Business HR.

Agri Exim’s work extends far beyond Davao. It has built a resilient network of agricultural communities whose efforts feed global demand—and whose growth is central to the company’s long-term goals. At every step, the people behind Agri Exim remain driven by pride in the farmers they support and the impact they create.

Even in the face of adversity such as the pandemic, Agri Exim doubled down on its commitment to employment and the community. “Even during the pandemic, everyone was still intact. We still continued hiring people and proceeded with operations, as opposed to other industries. We even expanded further. That’s how resilient our company is,” shared Gerard John Deriada, Materials Management Department Manager.

This resilience also paved the way for digital transformation—an essential evolution as the company scaled.

“One way that helped us is the implementation of our ERP system, which needs real-time updating of reports, of our systems, and of everything that is going on in the plant,” Deriada added. “PLDT Enterprise helped us expedite that. It was a dream of our investors and the owner before, and we were not able to do it back then because of connectivity challenges. Through the partnership with PLDT Enterprise and its reliable solutions, we streamlined the process, allowing for more real-time feedback to our group, our company, and to our clients internationally.”

Empowering Agriculture Through Technology

As operations scaled and logistics became more complex, PLDT Enterprise became a critical enabler for Agri Exim’s continued success, providing high-speed, reliable broadband to enable field communications and connectivity.

With real-time updates from farmer partners, agricultural mapping, and harvest coordination, Agri Exim is now equipped to respond quickly and make data-informed decisions. The improvements extended to recruitment and HR functions as well.

“When we transferred to our current location, we initially had difficulty connecting with our candidates and new team members. There was an instance where we had to go out onto the highway due to network limitations which made hiring difficult. Especially now, when people are more digital, we have to be able to connect with them directly and seamlessly. PLDT Enterprise helped us resolve this concern. Now, we can even conduct interviews virtually,” added Lacorte.

These innovations are helping Agri Exim build a digitally ready workforce and supply chain—pushing the envelope of what agriculture can look like in the digital age.

A Commitment to Advancing Smart Agriculture in the Regions

“Agri Exim’s story is a powerful example of how digital solutions can transform traditional industries like agriculture. By enabling real-time coordination, faster decision-making, and stronger market access, we’re helping businesses scale sustainably and create real impact in regional communities. PLDT Enterprise is proud to support Agri Exim in their mission to uplift Filipino farmers and bring world-class products from Mindanao to the global stage,” said Jay Lagdameo, Vice President and Head of Enterprise Revenue Group at PLDT Enterprise.

“We continue to uplift the living of our farmers by empowering them and connecting them globally. Our mission is to improve the whole supply chain. We want to help bridge the gap between farmers and our clients globally with the help of PLDT Enterprise,” concluded Deriada.

As Agri Exim continues to grow, its partnership with PLDT Enterprise ensures that its vision for community-based, globally competitive agriculture remains on track and online.

PLDT Enterprise Boosts Transport & Logistics with Smarter, Stronger Connectivity Solutions

PLDT Enterprise is accelerating digital progress in the country’s transport and logistics sectors by delivering stronger, smarter wireless connectivity through Wireless Indoor Coverage.

Given the Philippines’ archipelagic geography and rugged terrain, many areas stand to benefit more from wireless connectivity solutions than from traditional wired infrastructure, making solutions like Wireless Indoor Coverage especially relevant in supporting the evolving needs of these industries.

“Reliable wireless coverage plays a critical role in enhancing communication across transport and logistics operations, from real-time SMS updates to clear voice calls and seamless data access. Whether inside warehouses, distribution hubs, or transit terminals, strong connectivity ensures accurate coordination, minimizes failed deliveries, and keeps customers informed every step of the way. This ultimately drives greater operational efficiency and boosts consumer satisfaction,” said John Gonzales, First Vice President and Head of Enterprise Consulting Services and Technology Management at PLDT Enterprise.

A Commitment to Transport and Logistics Innovation

PLDT Enterprise’s Wireless Indoor Coverage is about enabling transformation. By integrating wireless connectivity within vehicles and transit hubs, the solution supports the industry through:

  • Reliable connectivity on the move, enabling uninterrupted access to safety systems and communications as vehicles travel through different environments
  • Consistent, mobile-ready coverage that supports real-time safety features and critical system updates wherever the journey leads
  • Remote network management for vehicle fleets, ensuring timely security and configuration updates
  • Extended coverage into previously underserved zones, enabling consistent wireless connectivity in enclosed spaces such as bus depots, terminals, and vehicles where signal traditionally weakens

With wired internet still a challenge in some areas of the country, wireless broadband, particularly 5G, emerges as a powerful alternative in the meantime, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and wider reach to connect underserved areas and enable next-generation technologies.

Given this, Wireless Indoor Coverage helps solve long-standing industry challenges in transport operations—such as ensuring timely SMS alerts (including OTPs), enabling reliable voice calls during emergencies, and maintaining strong mobile data signals for seamless access to navigation apps, dispatch systems, and cloud-based tools.

All these innovations and their respective benefits align with the broader nationwide effort to overcome digital barriers in infrastructure, as highlighted in recent reports on wireless broadband advancements in the Philippines.

Enabling Safety, Efficiency, and Growth for Long Routes and Regional Mobility

PLDT Enterprise’s wireless solutions are designed to keep fleets connected even as they traverse remote areas and regional boundaries. Whether managing cargo transfers between provinces or maintaining communication on extended delivery routes, the solution supports stable, secure wireless access that scales with the mobility needs of the country.

This expanded reach reinforces PLDT Enterprise’s commitment to being the trusted network partner for nationwide transport transformation.

Moreover, by offering transport operators the ability to manage their wireless networks remotely via cloud platforms, the solution not only enhances operational continuity but also boosts cybersecurity and resiliency—key pillars in today’s security-sensitive landscape.

Driving Collaboration for Future Innovations

PLDT Enterprise envisions this initiative as a call to action for transportation companies, logistics operators, and public sector stakeholders to come together and reimagine how businesses move.

“We invite industry players to collaborate with us in crafting wireless solutions that are tailor-fit for their specific environments and use cases. Connectivity should move with you—and with PLDT Enterprise,” Gonzales added.

#PHDigicon2022: “When I think about BOUNDLESS, I think that’s Magic Johnson!”

Philippine Digital Convention 2022 headline speaker Earvin “Magic” Johnson talked about his journey from being an NBA Hall of Famer to philanthropist and businessman

PLDT Group’s Cathy Y. Yang talked to PH Digicon 2022 headline speaker,
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, about his life and legacy

After two years of holding the country’s most prestigious and one of the most sought-after thought leadership events in the Asia-Pacific Region virtually, PLDT Enterprise held the Philippine Digital Convention (PH Digicon) last October 27-28, 2022, face-to-face at the Marriott Grand Ballroom with a simultaneous broadcast online.

Highlighting the 2-day convention was the live interview with the legendary basketball icon Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson who strongly relates to the PH Digicon 2022 theme of BOUNDLESS. Hosted by PLDT Group Corporate Communications Head, Cathy Yap-Yang, Johnson fondly shares, “When I think about Boundless, I think that’s Magic Johnson!”

Raising awareness

In 1991, Johnson officially retired from his basketball career following the announcement of his diagnosis with HIV. In the same year, he founded the Magic Johnson Foundation, one of the most recognizable philanthropic organizations around the world today, which serves as a single-disease organization that works to raise funds for community-based organizations dealing with HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs.

Looking back, Johnson recalls the stigma and discrimination that used to rule the disease and how people talked in “hushed voices”. Now, people can openly talk about and discuss HIV/AIDS–all in the name of raising awareness of the disease.

Johnson’s ‘retirement’ didn’t hold him back to do what he loves most when he came back to play in the 1992 All-Star Game and won the All-Star MVP Award. He was also a part of the ‘Dream Team’ that won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics.

“When I look at our team and our achievements, we changed the world when it comes to the NBA and when it came to basketball,” he says. “What we were able to accomplish in Barcelona, the way that the world accepted us, we’ve never seen anything like it. We won the gold medal, but we changed the game of basketball around the world forever. And I am happy to be part of that.”

Raising the next generation of entrepreneurs

Johnson is also the founder and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, a global empire with a wide range of business endeavors that range from sports ownership, food service, to media and entertainment. He may have come a long way from bringing coffee shops and cinemas into Urban America, but he remains committed to his mission of creating jobs and opportunities for minorities and women-owned firms. When asked about retirement, the NBA Hall of Famer laughingly replied, “I am not built to slow down. I am a worker; I love to work, [and I bring] passion to my job every day.”

To prepare the next generation of dreamers and entrepreneurs, the NBA Hall of Famer, businessman, and philanthropist advised them about having a positive attitude despite setbacks, the importance of believing in one’s self, and having mentors–a role that he continues to play for many businesses, athletes, and his fans.

“My life is boundless. When I think of my journey, that’s the word I would use. I did everything that was not supposed to be done. When I think about boundless, I think that’s Magic Johnson! I was the first to go through a lot of doors, a man of color. Trust me, you can do it. Everybody out there, you can do it, you can have it, you can go do it, it’s all up to you.”

30 years later, after countless successful ventures, he shared, “Today, Magic’s court is the business world.”

PLDT Enterprise will extend different connectivity plans to the company’s headquarters and stores across the country, while they switched all their mobile lines to Smart through the newly launched packages of Smart Enterprise Postpaid utilizing 5G, Voice over LTE and Voice over WIFI network capabilities of Smart.

According to Rea Cruz, General Manager of Domino’s Pizza, the needs of their customers had drastically changed due to the pandemic, with the prevalence of mobile deliveries amid stay-at-home protocols. Thus, they needed to adopt suitable digital solutions to support their business operations.

“For restaurant businesses, the pandemic had forced us to think of ways to keep the business agile and adjust to the changing demands of our customers. GlobalData: Philippines an ideal hyperscaler hub

Hyperscalers looking for geographic expansion should consider the Philippines for its strong legacy in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, future of work programs, and hyperscale roadmap—a study conducted by data analytics and consulting company GlobalData showed.

According to the research titled ‘Why the Philippines Should Be the Next Destination for Hyperscalers,’ the country is the next logical destination for global tech giants due to several factors such as its success in terms of outsourcing, government support, business climate, accelerated cloud adoption, and significant steps for sustainability.

The study cited that the Philippines has a stable and evolving BPO sector as one of the global leaders in BPO, which currently holds about 10 to 15 percent of the global market and an annual growth rate of 10 percent over the past decade.

This entails a strong demand for cloud and artificial intelligence, driven by the shift of companies to remote working setup and the use of data and analytics to understand the online customer journey.

More enterprises in the country are also seen to move to the cloud with the adoption of hybrid operations and vertical applications, enabled by continuous network expansion efforts through 5G and fiber led by the PLDT Group. This is said to “drive the cloud market in the Philippines to grow solidly to US$ 2.8 billion in 2025.”

The PLDT Group has been augmenting its capabilities to strengthen the country’s global connectivity infrastructure and be the next preferred geographic destination of hyperscalers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Likewise, it has been leading various industry initiatives including the launch of commercial mobile 5G last year, which now has over 6,000 sites, to provide the best connectivity experience to its customers.

Moreover, the group also owns 615,000 kilometers fiber optic cables spread across the country to date, as it also marks its domination of the submarine cable capacities terminating in the Philippines.

In terms of sustainability, the group has implemented comprehensive sustainability programs, in partnership with Meralco and the energy department, with a focus on reducing its carbon footprint and improving environmental conservation.

Its key sustainability initiatives include its target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 by reducing carbon emissions, extending the use of renewable energy; and expanding investment in environmental projects.

“The digital economy in the Southeast Asian region is clearly at the cusp of unprecedented growth, and the Philippines is leading the way and growing the fastest,” said Gary Ignacio, PLDT Enterprise VP & Sector Head for Strategic Business Development, citing an excerpt from a recent market research report that tackled internet economy growth in the region.

“As such, the PLDT Group continues to invest heavily on network and IT infrastructure, as we anticipate the hyperscalers’ momentum to further build up in this part of the world. We’re beefing up our international capacities for full hyperscale readiness, with our investments on new cable systems such as Jupiter, APRICOT and the Asia Direct Cable. We’re also ramping up on our data center capacity build, which includes a plan to build a world-class hyperscale data center facility in the country,” Ignacio added.

Meanwhile, the study further mentioned that 29 percent of the businesses they surveyed are considering edge computing within the next three years, which represents another major opportunity for hyperscalers and telecommunication providers.

“Many businesses need the speed and agility of hyperscale solutions, ideally with the security and regulatory compliance that only locally hosted applications can offer to the various industry verticals operating in the Philippines,” the research indicated.

Moreover, the growing support of the government to develop the hyperscaler sector is helping create the right environment to further drive market traction and growth, with implementation of incentives program for hyperscalers expanding their operations in the Philippines, passage of relevant laws on data privacy and security, and the thrust for a cloud-first strategy across the public sector, among others.
