Globe blocks nearly 2,500 illegal sites with #PlayItRight

Globe Telecom stepped up its drive versus illegal content by blocking a total of 2,471 domains or sites in 2017 that hosted lewd content and child pornography as part of its #PlayItRight advocacy campaign.

The company has taken a stronger stance to combat child pornography by blocking websites and related content as stipulated in the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009.

“As a purpose-led organization, we have a responsibility to ensure that our products and services will not be used for illegal activities. Globe Telecom is strongly committed to help address child pornography in the country,” said Yoly Crisanto, SVP for Corporate Communications. She emphasized that the company will actively look out for illegal sites that contain vulgar content involving children.

Having partnered with global and local content creators and distributors for its content business, Globe has also taken an active role in promoting legitimate sources of online content. In 2017, the company launched the #PlayItRight advocacy to help the entertainment industry curb piracy and protect intellectual property rights.

“Our advocacy #PlayItRight goes beyond anti-piracy, it also aims to protect customers against malware and other cyber security threats that normally accompany illegal content or torrenting sites,” Crisanto revealed.

“With today’s highly accessible and affordable data and content packages, downloading content from legitimate sources has become so easy and convenient,” she said. “As more mobile and home broadband customers get used to streaming videos on their devices, it is imperative for us to provide our customers with safe and quality content, at the same time, protect the sources of original content including the licensed content of its global partners,” she added.

She said that the #PlayItRight campaign sends a strong message to the public to consume digital content the right way. “We want everyone to consciously behave positively online and stop illegal torrents or other illegitimate online sources. Let’s create new habits that would encourage people to create original content more and give them what’s rightfully due them,” she said.

In 2014, Globe introduced Spotify that changed the way Filipinos download music, helping curb illegal download of mp3 music from illegitimate sources.

Globe GCash beep Mastercard, an "everyday all-in-one card" payment solution

G-Xchange, Inc President and CEO Xavier Marzan (left) and MasterCard Country Manager Poch Villa-Real (right) with a giant rendition of the new GCash beep MasterCard during its official media launch held at the Aracama Restaurant, Bonifacio Global City on November 16, 2015.
More than a million Filipinos riding the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) daily can finally enjoy the combined convenience of paying for their MRT and LRT fares plus engaging in cashless shopping and bills payments with the new GCash beep Mastercard.

Filipinos without credit cards can now pay for their online transactions both here and overseas, as well as pay for MRT/LRT rides with a new product from Globe.

GCash beep Mastercard is the first value-added card to be beep ready, expected to serve as an “everyday-all-in-one” card which functions as an ATM card for cash withdrawals, a prepaid card for purchases, and a beep card for daily MRT/LRT commute.

"Here in the Philippines, three out of four adults do not have bank accounts. And even within the banked population, there are hugely underserved segments with only 3% credit card penetration. We at GCash are enabling this market with financial services such as GCash beep MasterCard to give them all the convenience of cashless shopping and payment, among other benefits,” said Xavier Marzan, President and CEO of G-Xchange Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Globe Telecom, which operates GCash.

“We are very pleased with our collaboration with GXI on the launch of the new GCash beep MasterCard. As a valued MasterCard member, all GCash beep MasterCard users will now have access to over 40 million MasterCard merchant locations and ATMs worldwide. This card certainly provides a powerful tool to consumers in the Philippines, enhancing their daily lives given their expanding purchasing needs locally, overseas and in the digital space,” said Poch Villa-Real, MasterCard country head.

GCash beep MasterCard is the first value-added card to be beep ready. Since the start of September 2015, GCash started selling GCash beep MasterCard in parallel with the expansion of the tap payment facilities in various MRT/LRT stations. beep is the authorized reloadable electronic payment under the unified LRT/MRT ticket system which started full implementation on October this year. It is operated by AF Payments Incorporated primarily owned by Ayala Corporation and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.

"Making the lives of Filipinos a lot easier and better through technology is always a priority. Thus, we made sure that the beep functionality is part of the GCash Mastercard. With it, commuters don't need to line up every time they ride the MRT or LRT which takes a long time, because with the GCash beep Mastercard they can purchase their fare like a stored value card," added Marzan

The tap, swipe and shop feature also makes it easy for customers to just tap the card to pay for their fares, swipe their card for purchases and even shop online for apps and online goods. The GCash beep Mastercard is definitely the commuter's everyday all-in-one card.

Globe GCash beep Mastercard is not only a reloadable contactless tap and go card for LRT/MRT passengers but is also accepted as a payment option in popular online shopping sites and in almost 33 million establishments worldwide which recognize the Mastercard brand.

At the same time, because it has a GCash account, it can be used to buy prepaid Globe/TM phone load, send money to any Globe/TM user for free, receive remittance, and even withdraw cash from any automated teller machine (ATM). Much more, GCash beep Mastercard allows balance and transaction monitoring to ensure that everything is properly recorded.

The GCash beep MasterCard are available at 35 selected Globe Stores nationwide and roving caravans for oly P150. It includes a free prepaid Globe SIM card and P30 in GCash load. The personalized GCash beep Mastercard can be ready in just a few minutes once a valid ID is presented.

Funds for the card may be loaded by cashing in at any of the 10,000 GCash outlets nationwide. These outlets include all Globe Stores, 7-11 convenience stores, SM Department Stores, Puregold Supermarkets and pawnshops such as Tambunting and Villarica, among others.

In addition, GCash subscribers can also use mobile and online banking to fund their Gcash beep MasterCard.

To reload the beep account, customers just need to place the GCash beep Mastercard on top of the Stored Value Card reader of the Ticket Vending Machine at any LRT/MRT station, choose the Stored Value option on the screen, insert the corresponding amount of money on the slot provided, and wait for the transaction receipt to come out.

GCash beep Mastercard may be purchased at various caravans (see www.globe.com.ph/gcash for details) for only P150 and may retain a maximum beep stored value of P10,000 valid for 5 years. The GCash wallet, meanwhile, may accommodate as much as P100,000.

Since GCash beep MasterCard is powered by GCash, cardholders can also enjoy other features and benefits. As a cardholder with a GCash account, customers may easily buy discounted prepaid Globe/TM phone load, send money to any Globe/TM user for free, receive remittances, pay bills and even withdraw cash from any automated teller machine (ATM) worldwide.

Furthermore, with GCash, customers can also check their GCash balance anytime and monitor all their transactions.

OpenSignal: Globe outpaces competition in LTE speed, coverage

Providing fastest mobile internet service in the Philippines

OpenSignal State of LTE report:

Globe Telecom provides the fastest LTE service in the Philippines, affirming the superiority of its mobile internet service and network infrastructure amid intensely competitive environment in the local telecommunications industry.

Based on OpenSignal’s State of LTE report for the third quarter of 2015, Globe Telecom’s LTE download speed is at 10 Mbps, double its competition’s LTE download speed of only 5 Mbps. Globe Telecom’s LTE download speed is comparable to territories/countries like Hong Kong (Smart Tone), India (Airtel), Norway (Telenor, Network Norway), Portugal (NOS), Indonesia (Indosat), which all registered a 10 Mbps download speed, and even higher than the 8 Mbps download speed in Russia (MTS), Malaysia (DiGi) and even US (AT&T, US Cellular, Sprint, C Spire Wireless).

While Globe Telecom’s download speed of 10 Mbps is considered adequate, its competition’s download speed of 5 Mbps dragged down the Philippines’ average LTE download speed to 8Mbps. OpenSignal specializes in mobile coverage mapping by crowdsourcing signal strength, data speed and reliability. In terms of LTE coverage, that of Globe is also superior at 41% against its competitor’s 36%.

“These findings prove our success in continuously expanding our network capacities amid ever-increasing demand for high-speed mobile internet access as more and more of our customers

build their life and work experiences around a digital lifestyle,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications, noting that about a third of the company’s 48.4 million mobile customers are now using smartphones.

As part of the company’s aggressive LTE rollout, the Globe network’s mobile ultra-broadband access in Visayas and Mindanao were expanded, utilizing the LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD technologies, Agustin said. Currently one of the most relevant mobile network technologies, 4G LTE offers much higher bandwidth, lower latency even as it increases overall network capacity. This allows customers to use more applications on their mobile devices.

Crisanto said the continuing expansion of Globe network capacities is intended to provide its customers with holistic digital experience as the company continues to offer products and services that enhance the Filipino digital lifestyle. “Globe is committed in providing the right infrastructure support to ensure that the data needs of our customers are served, thus strengthening our position as the network of choice for smartphone users in the country. When it comes to mobile internet speed, we believe that the Philippines can compete globally but there is a need to distinguish between mobile and wireline,” she added.

Amid ongoing network expansion, Globe capital expenditure this year is expected to reach $850 million. As of June this year, capex stood at P11.4 billion, bulk of which were allocated for data-related projects that include investments for the company’s broadband network, capacities for wireless data, LTE, domestic and international transmission facilities. A significant portion of the company’s capex for the year were also allotted for its IT infrastructure as Globe continues to create platform for new products as well as to build on its IT transmission initiatives.

The OpenSignal data is collected from real consumer smartphones and is recorded under conditions of normal usage. Rather than approximate the user experience, it is directly measured from the users of OpenSignal smartphone application, which can be freely downloaded on both iOS and Android devices, and thus it is able to constantly monitor the true network experience that users are getting on those devices.

Through the app, OpenSignal is able to observe the network exactly as the end user experiences it. Such customer-centric approach allows OpenSignal to measure the true end-to-end experience of the mobile network. It isolated the networks in the Philippines by extracting all those points sent with network IDs corresponding to the brands operational there and then perform a geographical query to isolate only those data points that have been captured within the region. The different brands have been identified by investigating the network names associated with the SIM in the reporting device and the network which is serving the device.

As campaign versus text spam/scam intensifies to protect customers Globe blocks close to 31M spam/scam messages in less than a year

Globe Telecom blocked a total of 30.8 million of spam and scam text messages in less than a year as the mobile operator intensifies its campaign to rid its network of such annoying and unwanted messages and protect its customers.

The leading telecommunication provider expanded coverage of an automated filtering functionality that keeps its customers from receiving scam and spam messages. With the expansion, majority of the company’s 2.3 million postpaid customers are now covered by the filtering mechanism, said Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Service Management Division, Network Technical Group.

Such filtering mechanism, which prevents the transmittal of scam messages to mobile devices, has substantially reduced the number of text scams/scams going through the Globe network, Agustin explained. Globe operationalized the automated filtering mechanism in October 2014 as part of the telecommunication provider’s efforts to rid its network of both spam and scam messages.

The volume of messages blocked by the network filtering system averages about 90,000/day, reaching a peak of around 200,000 in July this year. The filtering mechanism can be reconfigured to address the kind of spam and scam messages that goes through the Globe network, Agustin said. Recently, bulk of spam and scam messages delivered to Globe customers originate from sim cards of competition (with prefixes 0922, 0943), he noted.

“We will never tolerate the use of the Globe network by some unscrupulous individuals who want to take advantage of our customers for their own personal gain. Globe has been long committed in eliminating text scam spam as part of our commitment to provide wonderful customer experience,” Agustin stressed. He added that the company is continually developing mechanisms that will purge its network of text spams/scams. According to him, mobile numbers that are identified to be a constant source of spam and scam messages will be temporarily disconnected from service.

Aside from the filtering mechanism, Globe implemented an awareness drive to educate its customers and keep them from falling victims to text spam/text scams through its #stopspam campaign. In addition, Globe made it easier for its customers to immediately report text scams or text spams that they get on their mobile devices thru http://www.globe.com.ph/stopspam. Customers just need to provide all the details required and numbers that are reported as source of text scams will be immediately blocked from the network.

Mobile customers of Globe Telecom reached 48.4 million at the end of the first half, a 13% rise from 42.7 million a year

The event will be a celebration of a successful tie-up between a business entity and a non-government organization working together for the protection and conservation of the country’s natural resources.
“As an ecologically-responsible company, we take pride in finding opportunities to show our genuine care for the Philippine environment as well as the creatures which thrive within them, such as our collaboration with the PEF. As Pamana takes flight on the most important day of our nationhood, we also hope to fire up the spirit of pride and environmental consciousness among Filipinos as individuals, as well as being the sentinels of Mother Nature within the industries they work for,” said Globe Senior Vice President for the Enterprise Group Nikko Acosta.
“We are very glad to have partnered with Globe Business in protecting the environment this side of the country. Taking care of Pamana as well as our environs in Mindanao together for three years is proof to everyone that it is possible to have a synergy between the private sector and groups such as the PEF for the higher good of our environment,”  PEF Director Dennis Salvador shared.
According to the PEF, the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “critically endangered,” or facing severe habitat loss, an extreme fluctuating population, and the possibility of future generations not seeing them in the wild. With a conservative estimate of only about 1,000 individual eagles remaining, the Philippine Eagle faces continued threats of shooting, hunting, trapping, and deforestation that further threaten its dwindling population.

In 2012, Pamana was retrieved in Iligan City and turned over to the PEF after suffering two gunshot wounds: one on its left breast and another on its left wing. It was immediately brought to the Phil. Eagle Center in Davao City where it was treated until full recovery three years after. The eagle was deemed to have been a target for possible poaching, as its severed talons may fetch up to US$200 a pair. Its other parts, including the feathers, wings and head, are also valuable items sold in the black market, where a whole body of the raptor may sell for US$1,000, according to various websites.
“For an endangered species like the Philippine eagle, every individual counts. Thus, the ultimate goal of our rescue and rehabilitation is to eventually release them back in the wild where they belong. These released raptors will help augment wild populations by replacing old and dying individuals. Pamana’s reintroduction to the area will hopefully contribute to increasing and improving its population once it finds its mate and breeds,” Salvador pointed out.
Meanwhile, Acosta confirmed that this year, Globe Business will continue its support PEF through an additional P500,000 grant in the aforementioned areas of work to ensure that more Philippine eagles like Pamana can be cared for and eventually set free in the wild. In their three-year partnership, total funding by Globe Business to PEF has reached about P1.2 million. The Head of Globe Business also noted that engaging Philippine corporations to similar causes for the environment can create a greater scale and impact for conservation programs.

Donations may be coursed through Globe Rewards points of 40, 20, 10 and 5 by texting DONATE PAMANA and send to 4438, while GCash account holders may follow the steps after dialing *143# and choosing “GCash” in the menu.

Globe Telecom signs partnership with Rocket Internet’s Lazada

Globe Telecom President and CEO Ernest Cu (left) and Lazada Founder and CEO Maximilian Bittner (right) together with Globe SVP for Consumer Mobile Marketing Issa Cabreira (center) after the partnership MoU signing between Globe and Lazada.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - Number one Philippine mobile brand Globe Telecom recently partnered with top online retailer and marketplace Lazada to bring its internationally-acclaimed GCASH mobile wallet to the eCommerce space in South East Asia.

Lazada is owned by Rocket Internet, an internet platform that identifies and builds proven internet business models then transfers them to new, underserved or untapped markets where it seeks to scale them into market leading online companies.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) was signed by Globe Telecom President and CEO Ernest Cu and Lazada Founder and CEO Maximilian Bittner on April 22 in Seoul, South Korea. In the coming months, it will pave the way for GCASH to be used as a mode of payment in Lazada’s eCommerce website through an open integrated mWallet platform.

“We are excited about this partnership with Lazada because of its customer traffic and the innovation it has done with online shopping. It is a great opportunity for us to leverage on this collaboration by bringing GCASH at the forefront of eCommerce. By increasing transactions through mWallet, we will once again expand the online ecosystem of Globe and provide our customers with a full digital lifestyle experience,” said Cu.

GCASH is an internationally-acclaimed product of Globe Telecom’s wholly-owned subsidiary G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI) and is among the pioneers of telco-led mWallet in the world. GXI has also established a wide network of local and international partners that includes government agencies, utility companies, cooperatives, insurance companies, remittance companies, universities, banks, and commercial establishments which accept GCASH as a means of payment for products and services via mobile phone or the internet.

Through mWallet, Globe customers no longer need to own a credit card or even have a bank account to engage in eCommerce. Instead, they can turn their mobile phone into a virtual wallet to shop at the speed of a text message.

In just barely three years, Lazada has become one of the top B2C eCommerce market places in South East Asia with presence in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Lazada has over 15,000 merchants, and 1.4 million active customers and is currently valued at US$1.2 billion with US$700 million of investment funding. It has an online footprint of approximately 4 million daily visits to its websites and the largest Facebook following in Southeast Asia with over 12 million fans.

Globe is very active in forging regional and international partnerships such as Google, Facebook, Viber, Spotify, NBA and recently, online entertainment service HOOQ to drive the growth of its mobile data business.
