Collective action in motion: Championing sustainability through the first-ever GCash Eco Run in Manila

GCash, the leading financial super app and largest cashless ecosystem in the Philippines, is mounting its first-ever Eco Run on March 23, 2025, along Ayala Avenue, Makati City.

(L-R) IKEA Philippines country business navigation manager Frida Wallin, GCash group head of new businesses Winsley Bangit, Silliman University Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS) project coordinator and professor emeritus Dr. Hilconida P. Calumpong, IKEA Philippines country retail manager Ricardo Pinheiro, and GCash sustainability head CJ Alegre.

The GCash Eco Run is a fully eco-conscious and sustainability-centered event that brings the GForest digital eco-movement to the streets, to further the positive environmental impact established by Silliman University in the Negros region. Stakeholders, advocacy groups, eco-products merchants, and running enthusiasts will be gathering to showcase sustainable practices in action.

Each successful registration to the GCash Eco Run will enable the planting of one grey mangrove tree in Negros Occidental, a province gravely affected by climate change. To underscore its commitment to climate action and helping local communities.

“GForest is a platform that transforms digital trees into actual plants. With GCash Eco Run, we are expanding the digital eco-movement established by GForest and giving our Green Heroes more opportunities to come together,” says CJ Alegre, head of sustainability for GCash. “It is testament to the powerful community we have created at GCash, that we can go beyond digital platforms and collectively take significant, real-world steps forward to help local communities and protect essential ecosystems in Negros Occidental.”

Scaling the eco-movement, one tree at a time

Growing in coastal areas in Negros Occidental, the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina) plays a vital role in environmental conservation, as it protects shorelines from erosion, mitigates the impacts of extreme weather, and sequesters carbon, all while providing habitats for marine life. Mangrove forests are crucial assets in the fight against climate change and preserving marine biodiversity.

In the Negros Island Region, GCash has a long-running collaboration with Dumaguete-based higher education institution Silliman University (SU), and its Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), which focuses on mangrove restoration, protecting coastal environments, and providing livelihood opportunities to local farmers and fisherfolk.

The planting of the grey mangrove trees, made possible by GCash Eco Run participants and sponsors, will take place on the site managed by SU and maintained by local communities. This is part of the SU-GCash Reforestation in South Negros Project, whose overall goal to plant a total of 1M across critical areas in the region by 2029.

Sustainability-focused organizations partnering for the environment

GCash makes it easy for companies to create a meaningful environmental impact. By connecting businesses with GForest’s trusted planting partners, GCash enables them to support science-based, proven-effective sustainability programs seamlessly.

IKEA Philippines—the local arm of the global furniture brand headquartered in Sweden, and whose Pasay store holds the record as the largest IKEA store in the world—is supporting the event by pledging 30,000 trees under the South Negros conservation initiative. Sustainability has always been part of IKEA’s commitment to its customers, as it offers home furnishing products, food, services, and solutions that inspire and enable people to lead healthier and more eco-conscious everyday lives.

“IKEA’s sustainability direction goes hand in hand with this activity, [focusing] on three pillars: Healthy and sustainable living, being circular and climate-positive, and being fair and caring. Today, sustainability is neither a choice nor an option. It’s a must, which is why IKEA is deeply focused on this priority,” shares Ricardo Pinheiro, country retail manager of IKEA Philippines.

This partnership with SU-GCash Reforestation underscores IKEA Philippines' central goal to create a positive social impact within communities, as it hopes to inspire other businesses to join the collective effort to make more sustainable choices every day.

“Our partnership with GCash and IKEA is a testament to the power of collective action for sustainability. Through this collaboration, we aim to restore vital ecosystems and engage local communities in long-term conservation efforts,” said Dr. Hilconida P. Calumpong, project coordinator and professor emeritus, Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), Silliman University.

A fully eco-conscious, sustainability-centered event

The GCash Eco Run has been deliberately designed to promote sustainable practices in every aspect. From adapting sustainable and mindful eco-friendly practices in the event production, to booth structures being built out of recycled and non-single-use plastic materials, all the way to race kits being made out of recycled PET bottles—GCash Eco Run ensures a 100% sustainable, eco-conscious experience for all.

GCash will also introduce its new 100% recycled plastic GCash VISA cards at the sidelines of the Eco Run at a special retail price, kickstarting the initiative with the Filipino running community.

Merchants offering eco-products or eco-friendly advocacies like Bukid ni Bogs, Human Nature, The Eco Shift Store, Wonderhome Naturals, Cut the Craft Clothing and Apparel will also have booths at the event.

The GCash Eco Run will also amplify the efforts of eight advocacy partners. Berdeng Kalabaw, Aling Tindera, and ZOLO are encouraging runners to bring recyclable waste, to be collected for proper waste management. Caritas Manila will be accepting donations of old clothes, WWF Philippines will call for donations for habitat conservation and animal welfare, and Hound Haven will encourage the adoption of retired working dogs to rally behind charity programs.

To promote farm-to-table practices, Commune Café + Bar will showcase locally sourced coffee, from Atok, Benguet, while the Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. will be offering Itogon coffee; Seven Days of Greens will retail organic fruits and vegetables from smallholder farmers.

The GCash Eco Run is supported by IKEA Philippines, Globe Fiber, Pay & Go, eTap Solutions, BPI-MS, GOMO, Standard Insurance, BYD, Century Tuna, ECPay, Gringo, Park Access, Singlife, and ST Telemedia. These sponsors have also pledged to plant trees and support Silliman University’s mangrove conservation efforts. The event is organized by RUNRIO, a leading organizer of race events in the Philippines.

“At GCash, community drives our broader sustainability agenda of harnessing tech and innovation for good,” shares Alegre. “The support of our sponsors is testament to how partnerships built on shared goals can transform commitments into action, and GCash aims to engage more like-minded organizations to scale and grow this eco-movement.”

2,000+ Filipinos ran for wellness at Home Credit PH’s inaugural fun run—Takbo #ParaSaLife

Country’s leading consumer finance company inspires people to take a step toward health and wellness

Over 2,000 runners participated in Takbo #ParaSaLife, Home Credit Philippines' first-ever fun run held at Parqal in Aseana City. Organized by WeKenRun, the event offered 1K, 3K, 5K, and 10K categories, promoting health and wellness among Filipinos and reinforcing Home Credit's commitment to supporting customers not just financially, but holistically.

More than 2,000 runners took a step toward a healthier lifestyle today as they joined Takbo #ParaSaLife, Home Credit Philippines’ (HCPH) first-ever fun run. As the country’s leading consumer finance company, Home Credit continues its mission of supporting Filipinos—not just financially, but holistically—by promoting physical and mental well-being.

Held at Parqal in Aseana City, and organized in collaboration with WeKenRun, a running group led by renowned marathon coach Ken Mendola, the event featured 1K, 3K, 5K, and 10K categories, making it accessible to runners of all fitness levels.

Apart from the fun run participants and the Home Credit executives and team members, guests and personalities, including Lester Cruz, CEO of Singlife Philippines, also graced the event to support Home Credit’s drive for healthier lifestyles. Employees from Boltech and SM, along with valued event partners from Xiaomi, Park Access and Singlife, also joined the race.

Championing holistic wellness

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 38% of Filipinos are physically inactive, putting them at risk for lifestyle-related diseases. As the Filipinos’ trusted ally, not just in financial inclusion but in overall well-being, Home Credit is committed to encouraging communities to embrace a healthier lifestyle," Petr Lukosz, HCPH Chief CRM Officer and 2x Ironman Philippines Champion said.

“Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds come together for this run is truly inspiring. At Home Credit, we believe that wellness is an essential part of living a fulfilling life. Takbo #ParaSaLife is more than just a race—it’s a movement that we hope will continue beyond today. We look forward to making this an annual tradition to encourage more people to prioritize their health,” he added.

[From L-R]: Home Credit Philippines executives also joined the run. Seen here are Jana Pechouckova, Chief Financial Officer; Pratim Bhattacharya, Head of Operations; Ihor Kruchynenko, Chief Risk Officer; Petr Lukosz, Chief CRM Officer; Teeraphong Mahatham, Deputy Chief Executive Officer; Philips Yu, Chief Digital Officer; and Sheila Paul, Chief Marketing Officer

A successful turnout and exciting rewards

The event welcomed Home Credit team members, first-time runners, and seasoned running enthusiasts, all united by a shared commitment to health and wellness. Participants received running shirts, race bibs, and loot bags from event partners, and finisher medals will also be shipped to them. Additionally, podium finishers in the 10K, 5K, and 3K categories took home exciting cash prizes—including a ₱10,000 grand prize for the fastest runner in the 10K distance.

Additionally, Home Credit and its partners made the event even more rewarding with exciting prizes, including gift certificates for ON Running Shoes and Suunto, Park Access vouchers, and smart home gadgets from Xiaomi. Podium finishers also took home insurance vouchers from Singlife—₱7,500, ₱5,000, and ₱2,500 for both male and female first placers of the 10KM, 5KM, and 3KM categories respectively. These winnings are just one of the many ways Takbo #ParaSaLife continues to champion holistic well-being while making every stride even more worthwhile.

Joma Unabia, a first-time fun run participant and 10K finisher, shared his excitement about joining Takbo #ParaSaLife. “This was my first time joining a fun run, and I never imagined I could complete the 10K category—but I did! It was such an incredible experience. Thanks to Home Credit, I got to challenge myself and achieve something I never thought possible. This event has inspired me to stay active, set bigger fitness goals, and make running a part of my lifestyle. I hope to join again next year and push myself even further!”

Looking Ahead

With the success of Takbo #ParaSaLife, Home Credit Philippines is already gearing up for next year’s edition—promising an even bigger, better, and more exciting event.

As WHO data highlights that nearly 40% of Filipinos remain physically inactive, initiatives like this serve as a vital reminder that small steps lead to big changes. Beyond financial empowerment, Home Credit remains committed to championing holistic well-being, ensuring that every Filipino can live their best, healthiest life—one run at a time.

This event would not have been possible without the support of Home Credit’s valued partners—WeKenRun, Aseana City, Parqal, Sip (Hydration Partner) and Sip Plus (Electrolytes), Singlife, Surge Lifestyle, Suunto, Xiaomi Philippines, Park Access (Official Nike Store Partner), Skintech, Dole, Silka, Corbridge, Oishi—who share the same commitment to promoting health and well-being. Their support helped make Takbo #ParaSaLife a truly memorable and rewarding experience for all participants.

Chevron sponsors AmCham Foundation ScholaRun to help send youths to school

To help send disadvantaged youths to school, Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, together with its shared services center, Chevron Holdings Inc., sponsored the recent 9th AmCham Eat and Run ScholaRUN at the Liwasang Ulalim, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

The run-for-a-cause is an annual event by the American Chamber Foundation Philippines, Inc. (ACFPI) to help raise funds for its scholarship program. ACFPI supports underprivileged youth through various development and education initiatives.

The scholarship enables students in high school, college, and vocational courses to fund their tuition fees and school supplies and provides allowance and guidance all to way to their on-the-job training. At least 2,000 former AmCham scholars were able to finish their studies since the program started which Chevron has always supported.

About 175 employees from CHI and CPI joined the run in support of the AmCham Foundation's cause. The event registered over 3,000 runners.

“We have been a long-time partner of AmCham and its initiatives and programs. Through this activity, we were able to further strengthen our relationship and commitment to the foundation as well as our support to their scholars. We trust that through our collective efforts, students get a chance to have a better life and more opportunities to succeed,” shared Chevron Human Resources Regional Manager Mark Quebral.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that your mere presence and participation is already helping underprivileged students in their studies. As added bonus, you also get to do something good for yourself through exercising and staying active. Chevron believes in AmCham’s cause of contributing to the community and helping people in need, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them and supporting their other events and activities,” CHI General Manager Ethan Flowers shared.

At the awards ceremony after the run, CHI Corporate Affairs Manager Arlita Narag accepted a plaque of appreciation as AmCham’s co-presenter of the 9th ScholaRUN. Hammering on its unique eat-and-run concept, participants got to taste American favorites such as pizza, burgers and donuts upon reaching the pit stop. The 9th Eat and Run ScholaRUN featured categories in 200M, 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K.

“We are very happy with the turnout and the general mood of the run. We are, after all, doing this for students and youth in need, so we are beyond grateful to all who participated. Currently, we have 50 scholars studying vocational technology at Don Bosco Makati. All the proceeds from our fundraising events, including the ScholaRUN - Eat & Run, go to our scholarship programs. So as always, we appreciate our sponsors, partners and participants who made this event possible,” said Edwin Feist, President of ACFPI.

Join the 1st iHeaRt PMAP Run

Did you know that 9 of the 10 leading causes of death in the Philippines are health related? Are you aware that just by eating better, making small lifestyle changes and doing moderate activity on most days of the week, we can reduce the risk of many diseases and increase our quality of life?

The People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP), the premier organization of HR practitioners and people managers in the country, is advocating health and wellness in the workplace as one of the most important issues that companies need to address today. With this, PMAP has organized an annual nationwide event called National Wellness Day that is being participated by various companies in the country every third Friday of June.

During the National Wellness Day, companies conduct wellness events in their workplaces that includes sponsored healthy lunch and snack; learning sessions on work-life balance, holistic and spirituality; and the 7-Minute PMAP Wellness Moment, a quick wellness activity that involves stretching and meditation done simultaneously across the nation by employees at exactly 3:00 pm.

On 19 September 2015, the organization will hold the first-ever iHeaRt PMAP fun run at the Camp Aguinaldo Grounds, Quezon City as part of the initiatives of PMAP in promoting workplace wellness. There will be three categories: 3K, 5k and 10k with minimal registration fees of P300, P400 and P500, respectively. Aside from the singlet and race bib, runners will receive cool freebies from sponsors. Also, awesome prizes await all race winners per category.

Get your running shoes ready and join this fun-filled and exciting activity.

For registration, sponsorship and other inquiries, please call 7261532 or email pmap@pmap.org.ph.

Cebu brightens up with COLOR Manila Run

More More than 2,000 fun runners joined the Cebu leg of the Color Manila Run
The Queen City of the South was painted with vibrant colors and big smiles during the Cebu leg of COLOR Manila Run. More than 2000 Cebuanos, including local and international tourists, eagerly braved the shower of water and dyes to give their early morning run a colorful twist.

The beautiful seaside view of South Road Properties (SRP) served as the backdrop as runners get color-bombed with the happiest colors of the rainbow – yellow, orange, blue, green and purple, at different designated stations.
Participants from Korea and Japan
Aside from the standard dri-fit shirts, race bibs and bags, all participants were alsogiven colorful reflectorized sunglasses that added a funky, fashionable touch.

The race was divided into 10K, 6K and 3K running categories but therewere no clocks, checkered flags or victory lanes. Everyone ran at their own pace and those who completed the race each received a specially designed finisher’s medal.
