Mark Zuckerberg : Facebook changes its name to Meta

Facebook changes its name to Meta

The newly-rebranded name of Facebook’s parent company has been announced to be Meta on Oct. 29. The company said the change would bring together its different apps and technologies under one new brand.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg, speaking at the company’s live-streamed virtual and augmented reality conference, said the new name reflected its focus on building the metaverse.

The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference. The new name reflects the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media.

Facebook, now known as Meta, has adopted the new moniker, based on the sci-fi term metaverse, to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual world.

“Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

The metaverse, a term first coined in a dystopian novel three decades ago and now attracting buzz in Silicon Valley, refers broadly to the idea of a shared virtual environment which can be accessed by people using different devices.

In addition to reflecting their vision to be seen as a metaverse, Zuckerberg wants the new name to anchor their work and identity on what they are building towards.

”Meta” was chosen as it means “beyond” and alludes to the social technologies they are building beyond pre-existing digital connections. Accompanying the new company brand is a new logo and color.

The company also said in announcing the new name that it will change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, effective Dec. 1.

LG Goes Live to Showcase Refs for Everybody

Following the success of their previous Livestream events, LG Philippines will hold another exclusive online gathering for its fans. As the holidays are slowly coming up, the need for appliances that can keep up with the rigors of the season is crucial. Knowing Filipinos, even with socially distant celebrations, there will be plenty of food going in and out of refrigerators. With this in mind, LG conceptualized an event to highlight their different refrigerators and how each particular model is perfect for certain individuals.

Doing the hosting duties is socialite and prolific event host Tim Yap, who knows a thing or two about throwing parties. Together with LG’s Project Manager for Refs, Jillian Yap, the pair will go over the different refrigerators LG has available, and how it pairs well with a specific niche.

LG will highlight refrigerators that are perfect for young professionals, starting families, and large, extended families. Each of the refrigerators that LG will showcase make a compelling case on how it’s the best refrigerator available for its category.

For example, for the fresh graduate young professionals, the single-door GR-Y33ISLZB gives a solid performance while being light on the pocket. LG’s top of the line refrigerator, the GR-X247CSAV InstaView is billed as the perfect choice for big families and large spaces. It has LG’s Instaview technology where you just knock on the fridge door and you’ll immediately see what’s inside. Aside from that, it also has the Door in Door with Inverter Linear Compressor for energy savings. A water and ice dispenser is also already built-in so you don’t need to hassle yourself with other machines.

LG will also highlight refrigerators that are ideal for startup businesses. Given how the pandemic forced individuals to adapt and pivot, home-based businesses enjoyed a boom during the start of community quarantine up until now. The GR-C33ISLZB is perfect for small startups while the GR-N222SQCN is best for those needing a bigger capacity. Both refrigerator units have wire shelves for easy stacking of items as well as LG’s smart inverter technology.

As it has become a tradition, LG will also be having a special giveaway for the South Korean brand’s Livestream viewers. One lucky winner will receive a brand new GR-N22SQCN refrigerator absolutely free. The details of the contest will be announced during the LazLive event so don’t forget to tune in for the giveaway mechanics. If you are in the market for a new refrigerator, a large selection of LG refrigerators will enjoy a special price during the event, just in time for the holidays.

Catch LG’s livestream at 12:00NN on LG’s Official Flagship Store in Lazada, Facebook, and Youtube page.

Huggies Offers Top Tips Every Parent Should Know Living In The ‘New Normal’

Kimberly-Clark’s HuggiesÒ brand keeps its promise to be the trusted parenting partner moms need through every step of their motherhood journey with Huggies Club: Facebook Live, a five-week series of online forums that brought up relevant topics and addressed the most pressing concerns that they deal with today.

Gathering thousands of moms online, the digital videos proved to be a relatable and reliable support system as it connected them to fellow moms, such as Kryz Uy, Patty Laurel-Filart, and Dimples Romana; as well as experts from various fields ranging from developmental pediatrics, child care development, mental health, nutrition, and more. Whether expectant, new, or going into their nth child, moms were able to gain access and listen to expert tips and credible advice so they can give the comfort and care they need for themselves and their children. Now that we’re adjusting to the new normal, here are some key takeaways from the sessions that every mom should take note of.

Dimples Romana

Don’t panic and be in touch with your doctors and loved ones.

Whatever the situation we find ourselves in today, it’s important to not panic. This is especially true for pregnant moms as it can be a daunting experience to give birth in the midst of a pandemic. Keep in mind that pregnancy doesn’t increase the risk of getting COVID-19, so prioritize being healthy physically and mentally, as well as practice the necessary precautions of sanitizing and physical distancing. Being bombarded with worries and feeling scared is inevitable, so it’s also essential to constantly be in touch with your doctors and loved ones for the proper care and reassurance that everything will be alright. Nowadays, we are fortunate to have many technological solutions at our disposal to help us do just that.

Take a holistic approach to health.

When faced with an unfamiliar situation, it’s always good to cover all bases. While we wait for a COVID-19 vaccine to be created, it’s advisable for parents to continue staying on top of your children’s health and ensure they are protected from head to toe with other available vaccines and treatments in the market today. Preventive measures should be every parent’s priority to keep their children’s immune system at its strongest because this lessens the risk of getting sick and contracting the virus. It’s no doubt that meeting our pediatricians is trickier given the quarantine measures, so going out and coordinating with them for scheduling vaccines should be properly mapped out.

Establish routines at home.

We’ve all gone through an abrupt change, but one thing remains the same and that is the growth and development of our children. We’re challenged to answer our children as they bring up questions why they suddenly stopped going to school, or why they can’t go out, meet, and play with their friends. It’s crucial that you create an open environment at home to talk about what’s happening without revealing too much as this may pose fear. It’s also important to create a safe space for your children to properly express their feelings so you’re able to determine their needs. The next step is to create routines and sort tasks in schedule so you can reestablish a sense of normalcy for them to grow physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally even at home. This helps you create boundaries, especially if you’re a working mom too.

Prioritize your mental health.

Finding that perfect recipe of being present in meetings, following deadlines, all while doing household chores and attending to your children’s needs takes a bigger toll on your mental health. What’s important is for you to not be too hard on yourself, take everything one step at a time, and strike a balance. Help yourself stay calm and collected by stopping when you’re feeling overwhelmed and take a minute to do a mindfulness activity, such as doing breathing exercises or even hugging yourself.

A healthy diet and proper exercise can help improve your mood during these times.

We sometimes struggle to keep structure in our day, making us forget to do physical activities, and even skip meals as we lose track of time at home. This can easily make us feel more tired, groggy, and irritable which can take a toll in our physical, social, and emotional well-being. Now more than ever, it’s vital to practice exercise and healthy eating habits. A nutritious and mood-boosting meal should always comprise of half a plate of fruits and vegetables, ¼ plate of rice or any other carbohydrates, and ¼ plate of protein such as chicken, fish, pork, or beef. Though it may be difficult to introduce a variety of food especially to young children, make it a proactive approach by nurturing a healthy diet while pregnant and exposing different flavors to your infant. For toddlers and pre-school aged children, slowly introduce changes to food by being creatively incorporating it in their meals. In terms of physical activity, limit screen time to a minimum. This can be done by assigning age-appropriate household chores and encouraging active play at home, such as crawling, playing catch, running around, or dancing.

“As we wrap up our Huggies Club: Facebook Live sessions this month, we hope that we were able to be a source of comfort and care for moms everywhere dealing with this new and unique situation. Carrying out our goal to be the trusted parenting partner of Filipinos, our commitment is unwavering in discovering new ways to continue guiding moms through every step of their motherhood journey,” said Brian Duruin, Head of Marketing, Kimberly-Clark Philippines, Inc.

Cooking shows, digital fitness via Facebook live

A glimpse on the new digital lifestyle

MANILA, Philippines, April, 2020 – Just like everyone else, social media stars, vloggers, musicians, artists, and performers find ways to cope during these trying times. Most of them raise funds to help frontline heroes in the battle against the pandemic. For some, the digital wave becomes a platform to help boost productivity from home.

Boosting the immune system

YouTuber and fitness enthusiast Wil Dasovich recently held a digital fitness campaign to help people boost their immune system.

He had a 15-minute ab-workout which consisted some fat-burning moves, including leg raises, the russian twist, side plank and reach through, and toe reach among others.

According to Dasovich, exercising and eating the right nutrients can help boost the immune system. He also shared some fitness and health tips, including intermittent fasting and autophagy.

For Dasovich, exercising is just one of the many ways to improve productivity at home especially during the quarantine period. “In a time of crisis, how we respond to situations is what defines us,” Dasovich said.

Kitchen innovation

A rising Instagram star and chef, Edward Bugia had a live Facebook kitchen experiment as he turned a simple pancit canton into Pad Thai.
Adding a dash of creativity, Bugia cooked a homemade Shrimp Pad Thai using two packs of pancit canton. He also made his own pad Thai sauce using the Pancit Canton packed condiments while adding a few more ingredients in the mix.
While he cooked his innovated pancit canton, Bugia engaged with his audience as he promised more live cooking sessions for them.
Bugia finished off his delicious Pancit Canton-turned-Shrimp Pad Thai with a wonderful plating as he enjoyed the taste of Thailand with his beautiful wife Trixie.

PLDT-Smart powers up work-from-home productivity

Last March 16, the government placed the entire Luzon on lockdown in the hopes of containing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Since then, Filipinos have to quickly adapt to a new lifestyle and work routine — one that requires them to live digital.

Transportation systems have been halted. Malls have been closed. Curfews have been imposed; and work-from-home arrangements have been in place.

The current crisis has forced people to go digital with work meetings held via Microsoft Office Teams or Google Hangouts and people relying heavily on fast Internet and connectivity.

As the entire nation combats the lethal impacts of the pandemic, Filipinos nationwide find better ways to cope and live this new normal. In this digital wave, everyone now relies on a fast internet for work to be done. With this, PLDT and Smart continues to enhance its networks to empower every Filipino, especially in this time of crisis.

To ensure a seamless work and study from home arrangement, PLDT provided a speed boost for Fibr subscribers in which the minimum speed is 25 Mpbs until April 30, 2020. This is applicable to residents of Metro Manila and parts of Greater Manila including Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal.

PLDT and Smart also continuously provides data connectivity, technical support, and communication aid to various frontline health workers and government response teams. Some beneficiaries include the Philippine General Hospital, Research Institute for Tropical Research and several local government units in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Globe, Facebook, DepEd collaborate to promote responsible digital citizenship in schools nationwide - “Digital Discernment” workshop launched to coincide with Safer Internet Day

Globe Telecom, Facebook and the Department of Education (DepEd) again joined hands to continue promoting responsible digital citizenship among teachers and students in public and private schools across the country under the “Digital Thumbprint Program” or DTP.

Globe Telecom, Facebook and Department of Education launched a partnership to promote responsible digital citizenship in the country. Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu (center) led the program launch. Cu is joined by from left, Globe Senior Vice President Nikko Acosta, DQ representative Galvin Ngo, Facebook Head of Community Affairs in Asia Pacific Clair Deevy and DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali.

As of end 2017, there are now more than 60 million internet users in the country, 52.2 million of which—or roughly 50% of the country’s population—are mobile internet users who spend about 3.36 hours using the internet daily. Data from a Philippine National Police (PNP) report also bared that half of internet users are adolescents aged 17 years old and below.

Related to this, the DQ Institute, an international think-tank formed in association with the World Economic Forum, revealed in its inaugural 2018 DQ Global Impact Report that 56 percent of kids 8 to 12 years old worldwide who go online are exposed to a variety of cyber risks. Referring to a study of the Philippine internet situation, the same report said 73 percent of children in the same age bracket are exposed to cyber risks, the second highest in a study among 29 countries.

The report cited exposure to cyberbullying, video game addiction, online grooming, online sexual behavior, and digital misinformation are as prevailing cyber risks in the Philippines. As online usage increases in the country, so does the level of risks for users whenever they are online, which calls for more protection by advocating responsible digital citizenship, including critical thinking when online, plus protection against piracy and abuse.

Given this, Globe Telecom and Facebook, in collaboration with DepEd, launched a workshop entitled “Digital Discernment.” The workshop contains topics that teach online users how to think critically online, and effectively identify credible information from questionable information. Content includes practical tips on how to verify and examine online sources of on and identify facts from opinions.

“Collaborating with Facebook and DepEd to enhance our DTP is important to make sure we are putting in the right intervention to address responsible usage of the internet. By the first quarter of this year, we will determine the social impact of this program to students from Grade 7 to 12,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

“Digital literacy is critical to building informed and meaningful communities. Working with partners like Globe we hope to give people in the Philippines the skills and resources they need to help contribute to a positive online experience,” said Clair Deevy, Head of Community Affairs, Facebook Asia-Pacific.

“From an early age, our children are able to access social media through personal mobile phones. Before they start actively engaging in social media or owing their mobile phone, we need to empower our children with digital citizenship skills to mitigate cyber-risks and maximize the opportunity of technology,” said Dr Yuhyun Park, Founder of the DQ Institute.

"The internet, undeniably, plays a very large role in the lives of our youth and students today to the extent that it seems impossible to restrain them from internet usage. What we can do about this is to teach them how to use it properly. It is our Department's responsibility to educate them to wisely use the internet because this is exactly how we produce individuals who are responsible and critical enough to know the perfect time and way to consult the internet. This is how we raise well-informed and insightful citizens," DepEd Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships, and School Sports, Tonisito M.C. Umali, Esq. explained.

The workshop also educates how online community can correctly recognize when information is intended as a joke, done satirically or intentionally crafted as false. Most importantly, Digital Discernment includes empathy as a key value to express online with the aim of not just creating a safer and informed community but one that embraces perspectives and respects differences of opinion.

The pilot “Digital Discernment” workshop was held February 6, 2018, coinciding with the observance of “Safer Internet Day” in the Philippines. One-hundred (100) public high school students from Metro Manila converged at the Mind Museum in Taguig City to participate in the first of many rollouts of the workshop to be held in various areas across the country. The Digital Discernment workshop also supports Globe Telecom’s #makeITsafePH campaign on cybersecurity and cyber wellness.

Launched in 2016 by Globe, DTP first comprised of three workshop modules: Digital Insight (for Grade 7 to 10 students), where participants are taught to help discern proper online behavior; Digital Impact (also for Grade 7 to 10 students) wherein issues on technology’s impact on students’ social activities are tackled; and Digital Ambition (for Grade 11 to 12 students), which equips students with skills on how to use technology to help them achieve their life goals.

At present, DTP has already reached more than 17,000 public and private high-school students in the country, with more than 1,800 facilitators already empowered to teach the program. In a latest impact assessment done by the Karrikins Group, it showed that 94.4% of the participants found the DTP relevant while 93.7% said it helped them build confidence in their online activities. Teachers also said their students displayed a high level of engagement in the sessions.

For schools and other organizations that would like to avail and schedule facilitation of the free workshops, emailbridgecom@globe.com.ph. Workshops also include a trainers’ program to equip aspiring facilitators to hold the workshops independently.
