Google doodle celebrates Philippines’ 119th Independence Day

Illustrator Dan Matutina designs Independence Day doodle

Google Philippines joins the country in celebrating its 119th Independence Day with a special one-day only doodle on the google.com.ph homepage designed by Filipino illustrator Dan Matutina. This year’s Independence Day doodle combines the beauty of the Philippine flag and the country’s unique island landscapes.

This is Google’s eighth Independence Day doodle for the Philippines, and it features Filipinos gathered around the Philippine flag for a flag raising ceremony while sunrise can be seen over the water, symbolizing the Filipinos’ optimism in the face of adversity.

The Philippine flag was first raised on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite as a symbol of the country’s independence from colonial rule. Now, flag raising ceremonies are held in all schools and government offices while singing the Philippine National Anthem.

Clicking on the Google doodle will lead visitors to learn more about the history of Philippine independence.

“Doodle” is the name used for decorative changes made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. Doodles make searches even more fun as we learn new things with each new design.

The first doodle was created in 2000 when Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin asked then intern and now Google’s chief doodler Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day. Since then, the Google homepage has featured thousands of doodles, making search even more fun and entertaining.

This coming June 12, the country’s number one fast food chain is set to release its latest anthem that is sure to make Filipinos #PinoyAndProud. Titled “Sarap at Saya”, this inspirational song is written for the country’s 118th Independence Day, to remind everyone how joyful it is to be Filipino and to highlight the many qualities that make every Pinoy proud of our beautiful country and unique culture.

Jollibee has consistently introduced generation-defining jingles through its TV commercials over the years. A salute to independence with Philippine flags in SM Supermalls

Patriotism will be rekindled among today’s families and the youth when all 58 SM Supermalls nationwide unite to celebrate Philippine Independence Day from May 28 to June 12, 2016.
“Our heroes went into battle full tilt so we can have our independence, which we enjoy until today. June 12, 1898, was the day the Philippine flag was formally raised as a symbol of that hard-fought freedom. This year, SM is reliving that important part of our history by holding activities that put emphasis on the significance of the event. It’s our way of celebrating with our communities,” SM Supermalls Senior Vice President for Marketing, Jon Jon San Agustin said.
The highlight of the festivities is a simultaneous flag raising ceremony in all SM Supermalls nationwide at exactly 8AM on June 12. Joining the SM teams are representatives from LGUs, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, academe, the private sector, among others. It will immediately be followed by a Freedom Parade inside every mall, passing by stores decked with their own Philippine flag displays.

To make the event more relatable to today’s youth, SM will be installing iconic Philippine Independence Day centerpieces that customers can use as background for their “selfies.” A special one-day mallwide sale dubbed #PINOYFUNSALE will also happen on June 10-12, offering up to 70% discount on select items.

SM Supermalls has been engaging customers in Independence Day celebrations for many years, acknowledging its crucial position of being at the center of every community where an SM mall operates. The country’s largest shopping mall operator serves millions of customers daily, giving the company a great opportunity to push this event’s objective forward.

#FilipinoShines : Aguinaldo Shrine comes to life for Independence Day

Remembering the valiant efforts of our heroes who have fought for this hard-won freedom, the Independence  Day celebrates the value all the freedoms that guarantee our way of life.

Last June 11, one of the best show I've seen this year was the lighting and video mapping show of the Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite.

As part of the 117th Philippine Independence celebration, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Local Government of Kawit, Cavite have partnered for the monumental lighting and video mapping show of the iconic Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, in order to raise the standard of monument lighting and presentation of buildings.

The 18th century national monument will be seen in a completely new light, through an audio-visual staging that makes use of video mapping technology. Also known as “projection mapping” or “spatial augmented reality,” video mapping uses digitally-produced images based on the architectural lines of a structure to tell a story, create an impression, and bring any structure to life.

The public viewing of the lighting and video mapping show begins on June 11 and will be on a special limited run until June 15. The shows are scheduled to take place every 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9:30 PM. In between the video mapping show, guests can also view the permanent lighting with sounds of the historical structure.

“The lighting and video mapping show of the Aguinaldo Shrine is the first time that it will be displayed on a national heritage site in our country. A state-of-the-art, avant-garde show of our history, it will tell the story of who we are as a people in a single, fluid, audio-visual narrative,” DOT Region IV-A Director Rebecca V. Labit.

On June 15, a formal ceremony will be held as the final public viewing and last day of this Independence Day feature, and will be attended by government officials, tourism stakeholders, members of the academe, members of the diplomatic corps, historians and heritage experts, media representatives, and influential personalities.

More than a hundred years ago, the Aguinaldo Shrine was a witness to one of the most crucial junctures in Philippine history—the declaration of a free Filipino nation. Being an important edifice of our national identity, it is a living reminder of the freedom that our ancestors have fought and longed for, and the monument of the successes that our country has achieved since then. It is our honor to lead this Independence Day celebration using a new technology such as video mapping to relive and re-imagine the beginning of our country’s independence,” DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. said.

The 14,000-square foot heritage mansion was the ancestral residence of the Aguinaldos and the birthplace of Emilio, who later became General and the first Philippine President. The residence was declared a National Heritage Shrine shortly after the death of Emilio Aguinaldo in 1964.

Constructed in 1845 from wood and thatch materials, the Aguinaldo Shrine has seen various reconstructions in 1849 and during the early 1920s. Its most historic spot, known as the “Independence Balcony,” saw the end of the three hundred-year Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines and the birth of the First Philippine Republic.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the country’s heritage structures and destinations, with more tourists including historical churches, ancestral houses, shrines, and monuments in their travel itineraries. Through this Independence Day initiative, the DOT aims to further enhance the touristic experience and make the country’s heritage destinations more fun for both foreign and domestic tourists.

“Through this project, our foreign and domestic tourists will have a deeper understanding for the many heritage destinations around the country. It is our hope to encourage the private sector and other stakeholders to work together in conserving both our tangible and intangible cultural heritage for the next generation of Filipinos to see and appreciate. Our achievements today are rooted and founded on our past. And our history and national heritage are integral to the continuity of our national identity,” Secretary Jimenez added.

The lighting and video mapping of the Aguinaldo Shrine is a project of the DOT through the initiative of the LGU of Kawit, Cavite and implemented by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and OptimumShow Philippines, Inc. The project is also supported by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Google honors the Philippine Flag on Independence Day

Philippine's Independence Day, the national holiday commemorating the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule.

This year 2015, as commemorate the Philippines’ 117th year of independence, Google joins the country in celebrating this national holiday with a special doodle on the Google.com.ph homepage.

This year’s Independence Day doodle depicts the Philippine Flag, with the sun and three stars standing for one “O” of the company’s logo. The letters also make use of the colors of the flag.

Google.com.ph homepage has featured the Independence Day Doodle for the six years. The inspiration came from the pride and honor Filipinos have over their national identity and history, often symbolized by the flag.

Clicking on the doodle will lead visitors to more information about the history of Philippine independence.

A “doodle” is the name used for the decorative changes made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, scientists, and leaders. Doodles make search even more fun and we learn new things with each new design.

Doodles have long been a part of Google's history. The first one was created when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin asked Google’s chief doodler (then intern) Dennis Hwang to design a logo for the 4th of July in 2000. Today’s doodle is one of the thousands of illustrations made for Google homepages around the world.

Globe Business, Ph Eagle Foundation is setting free Pamana on Independence Day- ‪#‎FlyFreePamana‬

Help save our national bird. Because of hunting and deforestation, there are only 1000 Philippine Eagles‬ left and is now listed as critically endangered.

On June 12 - ‪Independence Day‬, The Philippine Eagle Foundation together with Globe Business, is setting free a rescued Eagle named Pamana. After 3 years of rehabilitation, she is now ready to fly free, back to her natural habitat in Mt. Hamiguitan, Davao.

Help us spread the word and awareness by sharing this photo and using the hashtag ‪#‎FlyFreePamana‬

We're raising funds via GCash and Globe Rewards to help ensure the safety of Pamana, more about it by following @Globe_Business on Twitter or PEF.

Globe Business continues to manifest its commitment to the sustainability and conservation of our country’s biodiversity as its partnership with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) come to fruition with the release of a highly-endangered national symbol to its natural habitat on June 12, 2015.

Heightening the spirit of national pride and environmental consciousness on Independence Day, the enterprise ICT arm of Globe Telecom and the PEF will reintroduce Pamana, a rehabilitated Philippine eagle, at the Mt. Hamiguitan Range in Davao Oriental. The event will be a celebration of a successful tie-up between a business entity and a non-government organization working together for the protection and conservation of the country’s natural resources.
“As an ecologically-responsible company, we take pride in finding opportunities to show our genuine care for the Philippine environment as well as the creatures which thrive within them, such as our collaboration with the PEF. As Pamana takes flight on the most important day of our nationhood, we also hope to fire up the spirit of pride and environmental consciousness among Filipinos as individuals, as well as being the sentinels of Mother Nature within the industries they work for,” said Globe Senior Vice President for the Enterprise Group Nikko Acosta.
“We are very glad to have partnered with Globe Business in protecting the environment this side of the country. Taking care of Pamana as well as our environs in Mindanao together for three years is proof to everyone that it is possible to have a synergy between the private sector and groups such as the PEF for the higher good of our environment,”  PEF Director Dennis Salvador shared.
According to the PEF, the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “critically endangered,” or facing severe habitat loss, an extreme fluctuating population, and the possibility of future generations not seeing them in the wild. With a conservative estimate of only about 1,000 individual eagles remaining, the Philippine Eagle faces continued threats of shooting, hunting, trapping, and deforestation that further threaten its dwindling population.

In 2012, Pamana was retrieved in Iligan City and turned over to the PEF after suffering two gunshot wounds: one on its left breast and another on its left wing. It was immediately brought to the Phil. Eagle Center in Davao City where it was treated until full recovery three years after. The eagle was deemed to have been a target for possible poaching, as its severed talons may fetch up to US$200 a pair. Its other parts, including the feathers, wings and head, are also valuable items sold in the black market, where a whole body of the raptor may sell for US$1,000, according to various websites.
“For an endangered species like the Philippine eagle, every individual counts. Thus, the ultimate goal of our rescue and rehabilitation is to eventually release them back in the wild where they belong. These released raptors will help augment wild populations by replacing old and dying individuals. Pamana’s reintroduction to the area will hopefully contribute to increasing and improving its population once it finds its mate and breeds,” Salvador pointed out.
Meanwhile, Acosta confirmed that this year, Globe Business will continue its support PEF through an additional P500,000 grant in the aforementioned areas of work to ensure that more Philippine eagles like Pamana can be cared for and eventually set free in the wild. In their three-year partnership, total funding by Globe Business to PEF has reached about P1.2 million. The Head of Globe Business also noted that engaging Philippine corporations to similar causes for the environment can create a greater scale and impact for conservation programs.

Donations may be coursed through Globe Rewards points of 40, 20, 10 and 5 by texting DONATE PAMANA and send to 4438, while GCash account holders may follow the steps after dialing *143# and choosing “GCash” in the menu.
