foodpanda, Blas Ople Center partner for expansion of BuyAnihan Palengke livelihood program

foodpanda and Blas Ople Center officially launch the "BuyAnihan Palengke" at the
special one-day food bazaar held at Emerald Avenue in Ortigas
.

(L-R: Daniel Marogy, Managing Director of foodpanda Philippines, Toots Ople of Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute, Hans Leo Cacdac Administrator of OWWA and Leopoldo De Castro Jr, foodpanda Philippines finance director)

Leading quick commerce platform provider foodpanda has partnered with the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute for the expansion of the BuyAnihan Palengke CSR initiative aimed at helping enterprising Filipinos become resellers of fresh produce sourced directly from local farmers.

The project transforms its beneficiaries to community resellers of fresh produce sourced directly from the farms and thereafter transported to BuyAnihan Palengke distribution hubs in Metro Manila. This results to livelihood opportunities for the beneficiaries, better prices to the farmers for the sale of their produce, and fresh quality products for consumer.

Dubbed as a Fruits and Veggies Street Fest, the outdoor food bazaar exhibit featured fresh vegetables & fruits and food & refreshments sold by the program’s beneficiaries.

“This project started as a local program “Salubong ng Carrots Atbp.” of the Caloocan City Government through its Caloocan Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CADAO) with the Diocese of Caloocan City to provide a sustainable livelihood to several of the city’s reformed drug dependents and displaced workers become vegetable resellers. It inspired us from the private sector partners - the Philippine Seven Corporation and foodpanda Philippines to participate and scale the program to reach other cities and people. It was the embodiment of the Filipino Bayanihan Spirit that this country is known for.” said Daniel Marogy, Managing Director of foodpanda Philippines.

Marogy explained that the special one-day food bazaar at Emerald Avenue in Ortigas marked a new phase of the project.

“And so we soft launch today the BuyAnihan Palengke Group Buy App that will help the program reach a wider market and make affordable fresh produce even more accessible to consumers. As we move forward with this project, BuyAnihan Palengke will be known not just as a CSR initiative but as a revolutionary social enterprise powered by a technology platform.” declared Marogy.

On top of the event’s food offerings, a tent was dedicated for the recruitment of potential new resellers of the project where interested visitors of the event may sign-up and be shown how the app works.

Expanding the project’s beneficiaries

Staying true to its objective of providing the underserved sector with a source of income, BuyAnihan Palengke’s resellers now include repatriated Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), local farmers, out-of-school youths, and solo parents, among others. It is also opening its doors to interested resellers as well as foodpanda’s own partner delivery riders.

The outdoor food bazaar was the first collaboration between foodpanda and Ople Center, a labor non-profit organization (NGO) and a known advocate of initiatives that aid struggling Filipinos looking for livelihood.
Susan Ople, President of Blas F. Ople Center

“Unemployment and the lack of alternative sources of livelihood are two of the most serious economic dilemmas we are facing today. This project is a timely solution to this problem as we are able to onboard multiple sectors in just one program and provide them with a viable income stream,” tells Susan Ople, President of Blas F. Ople Center.

The CSR project includes training both OFWs and riders with basic skills and information necessary to prepare them for their new journey as resellers.

“With the expansion of the BuyAnihan Palengke livelihood program, we strive to innovate and look for more ways to help our stakeholders. We are happy and excited to see even more Filipinos get these livelihood opportunities,” says Leopoldo De Castro Jr, foodpanda Philippines finance director.

As foodpanda gives its full support to the launch event, its cute and adorable mascot, Pau-Pau also made his first public appearance as one of the event’s main attractions, visiting the bazaar’s various tents of food and vegetable offerings and greeting the bazaar visitors.

The BuyAnihan Palengke CSR Project aims to launch more projects and partnerships in the future directed at creating more livelihood opportunities for their beneficiaries, better prices to the farmers for the sale of their produce, and fresh quality products for consumers.

“Watch out for us as our increasing tribe of beneficiaries and resellers tour the Capital in the coming months to bring BuyAnihan Palengke closer to our homes.”said Ople.

In an effort to alleviate the plight of locally stranded individuals (LSIs), CHERRY, through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, the MSN Foundation—launches the CHERRY Swab Test Aide Project.

A family of beneficiaries for the CHERRY Swab Test Aide Project

The project was made possible in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), under their Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) program.

CHERRY is set to fund the swab test of 100 LSIs and other individuals affected financially by the COVID-19 crisis, and would like to return to their place of residence to start over.

“We are expecting a surge in recipients as Christmas draws near. A lot of our kababayan are possibly looking forward to celebrating the holidays with their families so most of them are very eager to go home,” says Agnes Conopio, PR and CSR Senior Manager, CHERRY.

The project beneficiaries are based on the recommendation of DSWD, from their list of Kalahi-CIDSS grantees and are carefully assessed by the social workers at MSN Foundation.

“We give full assistance to our beneficiaries, from referral to their scheduled departure, to ensure that they will return safely and hassle-free to their respective provinces,” shares Dezza Sacdal, program officer, MSN Foundation.

TECNO Mobile Donates Cash and Smartphones to Local Community Heroes

The brand’s first CSR campaign celebrates and honors everyday heroes from the three pillars of the community - the local government, civic groups, and the church.

Premium smartphone brand, TECNO Mobile recently completed its first CSR campaign in the Philippines, as a way to give back to the community following the successful release of several new mobile phone models in the country, including the Spark 7 Series, Pova 2 gaming phone, and most recently, the CAMON 17 Series. Through this show of support for the community, TECNO Mobile has become part of the nation’s journey in rising up from life’s challenges, and learning to see the best in every situation. At the same time, the selection of local heroes as beneficiaries for this campaign aligns perfectly with the reel- and real-life heroism of TECNO Mobile’s CAMON 17 brand ambassador, actor Chris Evans.

Three partner beneficiaries representing different pillars of the community were the recipients of donations made by TECNO Mobile for this CSR campaign - Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish, Project Malasakit, and the City of Manila through the Office of Mayor Isko Moreno. Separate handover ceremonies were held for each of the beneficiaries, the first of which was held on July 13th, at the Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish Area.

In the middle of Bgy. Payatas, an area deemed a hazardous place to live due to its proximity to an open area for solid waste disposal, you will find the Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish. This church’s leaders and volunteers provide educational and livelihood opportunities for the urban poor community living in Payatas, funded by donations from different entities. For its own CSR campaign, TECNO Mobile, represented by TECNO Mobile Limited’s Brand Marketing Director for Philippines, Jason Liang, donated Php 100,000 to the parish, along with 10 smartphones to be shared with hardworking parish volunteers, who tirelessly organize and facilitate activities such as community pantries, counseling, webinars, and online masses. The donations were received by Rev. Fr. Peter Hequillan,CM.

The second handover ceremony also took place on July 13th, at the Tikme Dine restaurant in Quezon City, this time with Project Malasakit as the beneficiary. Project Malasakit is a scholarship program whose mission is to bridge the gap between Filipinos who want to help, and Filipino children who need the assistance. Its goal is to provide these children with proper education, enabling them to change their own lives for a better future. 30 TECNO Mobile smartphones, plus Php 100,000 were given to Project Malasakit by TECNO Mobile Limited’s Brand Marketing Director for Philippines, Jason Liang, graciously received by its founder, Kara David, together with two of her scholars, Lilian Ambrocio and Mauwe Liwanag .

The final donation handover took place on August 6th at the Office of Manila City Mayor, Isko Moreno. Mayor Isko is known for his service to the local community, aided by his team of volunteer workers who man community hotlines, respond to reports, handle coordination for projects such as the recent vaccine rollout, and work at the local public school as teachers. For these community heroes, TECNO Mobile has donated 50 smartphones, and Php 200,000 through the mayor’s office. The donation was handed over by the TECNO Mobile Limited executives for the Philippines, headed by Lindsay Guan, CEO, and received by Manila City Mayor, Isko Moreno.

TECNO Mobile’s CSR campaign was kicked-off with an online photo exhibit, which featured thought-provoking images that capture the beauty of life, taken by top local photographers using CAMON 17 smartphones. A selfie advocacy campaign was also launched, encouraging the online community to get involved by sharing their own selfies for a cause. Anyone can join by simply posting a selfie on Facebook, which features their advocacy. The photo must include a caption with a brief description of the advocacy, along with the hashtags #TECNOMobileCares, #CtheBestofYou, and #SelfieAdvocacy. The best photo and caption will be selected by TECNO Mobile representatives, and the winner will be awarded a CAMON 17 smartphone.

CSR and sustainability need an “exponential reset,” says business author John Elkington

The fields of corporate social responsibility and sustainability need a major overhaul in order to grow at an exponential scale and attain urgent climate-related goals, says entrepreneur and business author John Elkington.

Elkington spoke in his keynote address for the 19th annual League of Corporate Foundations CSR Expo and Conference, which was held virtually last July 6-8.

Entrepreneur and business author John Elkington delivered the keynote address during the 19th annual League of Corporate Foundations CSR Expo and Conference last July 6-8.

Elkington pointed to the climate emergency that the world is facing in this and the coming decades as the catalyst for the change needed in the global economy. He rallies around the notion of “regenerative capitalism,” a sustainable and purpose-driven kind of capitalism needed to address the threat of the climate crisis within the next generation.

He outlines the need for what he calls “green swans” that the world has to meet to help guide it into an accelerated age of sustainability to effectively deal with the threat. These are the green swans of policy, renewable energy, and talent.

The green swan of policy refers to a profound market shift caused by changing values, mindsets, and business models, delivering exponential progress in the form of economic, social, and environmental wealth creation.

The green swan of renewable energy refers to the growth rate of the adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar power and wind, which should become cheaper to operate and consume over time as opposed to traditional energy sources.

The green swan of talent is the leadership of the youth, leveraging the potential of the current generation to enact the needed change in the world.

“Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are important, and they’re incredibly useful stepping stones, but if we think that’s the endpoint of our journeys, I think that may well be a mistake,” said Elkington, challenging businesses to consider going even further in their efforts to go green.

Elkington is the co-founder of Volans Ventures, a consulting firm that helps businesses drive positive change. He is known for coining the term “Triple Bottomline Approach to CSR and Sustainability of People, Planet and Prosperity”. He has authored and co-authored 20 books, including Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism, The Green Consumer Guide, and The Breakthrough Challenge: 10 Ways to Connect Tomorrow’s Profits with Tomorrow’s Bottom Line.

The League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) is a network of operating and grant-making corporate foundations and corporations that promotes and enhances the strategic practice of Corporate Social Responsibility among its members and the larger business community, towards sustained national development.

Small steps that go a long way The SM Store Share Shoes Program brings joy to kids in Isabela

Shoes are essential in one’s journey through life, especially forstudents. With a pair of good shoes, they will not only be able to fulfill their daily tasks with ease, but it can also inspire them to work hard and take little steps to achieve their dream.

Students of Diasan Elementary School in Echague, Isabela celebrate after receiving their new pair of shoes.

For most students in the city, a school bus or a stroll down the sidewalk are their usual commute. But for students in the province, it is a different story.

Samantha, a student from the Diasan Elementary School, shared the hardships she and her classmates face to reach school.

“Malayo po ang nilalakad namin ng nakapaa. Madulas po ‘pag umuulan at mahirap, maputik ang daan. ‘Yung mga iba po na nakatira sa may bundok, naglalakad po sila ng malayo. (My classmates and I have to walk a long way to get to our school. When the rainy season comes, the slopes become slippery and dangerous which makes it harder for us. The others who live near the mountain walk even farther),” Samantha said.

Diasan Elementary School is tucked in the middle of the Barangay Diasan, a remote farming community in Isabela with over 600 residents. Students like Samantha have to walk an hour or more on rough terrain to get to and from school and are sometimes forced to skip classes if the river is swollen due to heavy rains.

Despite the challenges, one would be surprised at the great lengths they are willing to go to for their education. The simple gift of a new pair of shoes will allow them to walk to and back to school in comfort and safety.

These are the kinds of stories that inspired the SM Store’s Share Shoes program to reach to the community to continue its mission of bringing joy - through the gift of shoes that can help make the journey of the students easier and more comfortable.

Sharing the gift of new shoes

Most students in Diasan have not set foot in a mall before, let alone a shop selling shoes, so as a treat for the kids, employee volunteers from The SM Store, Savemore and SM Foundationtransformed one of the classrooms into a shoe store. They assisted the kids in choosing and fitting their very own shoes from the display of clogs, sneakers, sandals, flats and slip-ons donated by The SM Store MLC Shoes and Bags, and SM’s retail affiliates Crocs and Simply Shoes.

A volunteer washes the feet of one of the kids to teach him the value of proper hygiene.

Replicating the shopping experience, an employee volunteer from The SM Store Cauayan assists a kid in fitting her new footwear.

The employee and community volunteers also set up a “Feet Washing Corner” before the shoe fitting to impart the importance of taking care of one’s feet. The kids could not hide their joy as they selected and tried on their new footwear.

Apart from receiving new shoes, the kids were treated to fun games and groceries from Savemore. The kids even gamely participated in a Zumba dance number led by The SM Store Cauayan employee volunteers. Wearing their new pairs of shoes, the kids enjoyed the activities knowing their feet were comfortable and secure.

Taking steps to a brighter future

Samantha said that having a pair of shoes is important to protect their feet from injuries.

“Masaya po ako nu’ng nakita ko ‘yung mga kaibigan ko na suot na nila ‘yung sapatos kasi ‘di na sila mahihirapan maglakad ng isang oras papunta ng iskul (I was so happy to see my friends wearing their shoes because now, they won’t have a hard time walking an hour to school),” Samantha said.

An employee volunteer from The SM Store Cauayan assists a kid in choosing his new pair of shoes.

Teacher in charge Domenador Mayuyo Jr. shared that for some of the kids, it was their first time to own a pair of shoes, with many of them walking to school wearing slippers or barefoot.

“It’s the first time for some of our students to receive a pair of shoes. Having a new pair of shoes is like a dream come true for them. It is a blessing for them to receive new pair of shoes that they can use to go to school,” Mayuyo said.

Through the gift of new shoes, The SM Store hopes to inspire these kids to take those important steps toward achieving their goals.

Promoting the culture of sharing and purposeful giving

The shoe donation was also accompanied by a medical mission through the partnership of The SM Store with the SM Foundation, Caritas Philippines and the Diocesan Social Action Center of Ilagan. Residents of the community were able to avail of medical and dental consultations, laboratory works, and had X-ray and ECG examinations, and medicines courtesy of the SM Foundation’s Mobile Clinic, all for free.

An employee volunteer and student beneficiaries bond after the program.

The activity was a part of the SM Share Movement, a program promoting a culture of sharing and purposeful giving among SM shoppers all year long. Since 2015, the SM Share Movement has collected over 1.3 million donations composed of shoes, clothing, books, school kits, disaster kits and toys.

The SM Store’s Share Shoes program encourages its shoppers to donate brand new and pre-loved footwear not just to help kidswalk safely and reach their desired destinations, but to also inspire them to take important steps toward achieving their goals.

“We would like to thank all the shoppers and our partners who donated and participated in The SM Store’s Share Shoes Movement. This wouldn’t be possible without you. Given the rough terrain and the challenges that these students of Diasan face just to get to their school, the new pair of shoes is a great help to them,” said Cielito Velasquez, Assistant Branch Manager of The SM Store Cauayan.

One of the classrooms is transformed by SM employee volunteers into a shoe store to give the kids a shopping experience.

Through the #SMShareMovement Project, the SM Store remains committed to its promise to give back to communities and to be a partner in their development. Through the simple but valuable gift of shoes, they can continue to be a part of Barangay Diasan’s journey as the children take steps toward a brighter future.

Oplan Pamamalakaya is primarily intended to offer profitable and sustainable livelihood opportunities for members of MAGSASAKA Inc., a legitimate non-governmental organization (NGO) whose main purpose is to contribute to the country’s overall agricultural progress and development not only in terms of livestock farming but crop productions and fisheries as well.

"Oplan Pamamalakaya shall serve as a model for both national and local government to replicate it on a nationwide scale if only to ensure enough supply of cheaper fish and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for many of the country’s fishermen," said Lt. Col. Nioda.
