Summer’s here: are you prepared for a termite attack?

Summer is the best time to prepare your home defense against termite attacks. There’s still a lot of time before the termites start swarming. It’s better to prepare for any termite attack now than to regret it later. For maximum protection against termite infestation, it’s best to use Solignum Wood Preservative from the leading and trusted wood preservatives for more than 100 years.

The Solignum wood preservative is effective against termites, wood-boring insects, and fungi—three known pests that may cause irreversible and costly damage to our homes if they aren’t stopped in time.

Another breakthrough is the introduction of Solignum Interior.  Solignum Interior is the same tried, tested, and trusted Solignum but now in a reduced odor formula making it very convenient to use inside the house.

Together with Solignum wood preservative, there is Soilguard odorless soil termiticide that creates a barrier to prevent termites from entering the structure. Subterranean termites may live under the soil around your house and they are able to build passageways called “mud tubes” from their colony underground to your house. Treating the soil around your house with Soilguard will prevent subterranean termites from attacking your home. Soilguard creates a barrier in the soil that will kill any termites that come into contact with it. It is formulated to be less hazardous to humans, animals, and the environment.

There’s also another type of termite, called the drywood termite, which lives inside and feeds on the wooden parts of your home. Using a combination of Solignum wood preservative and Soilguard will prevent an infestation of both termite types protecting your home inside and out.

Since summer generally has good, dry weather, it is also a good time to have the house inspected for a possible termite infestation, or to take steps to prevent such infestation. During the summer you may do the following:

Watch for termite warning signs. These include: wood damage; shed wings from a termite swarm; a termite swarm (just before the rainy season); termite mounds (punso); piles of termite droppings; or mud tubes that termites use as passageways from their colony to the wood that they are eating. You may not be able to recognize all signs of termite infestation so it’s best to call for a pest control professional to inspect your house.

Prevent moisture from getting in the wooden parts of your home. There are several ways to do this. Get rid of any stagnant water sources around your house. Make sure that gutters and drains spouts are clean and unblocked, and also ensure that the water flowing from them does not touch wooden parts of your house. Make necessary modifications in your house so that moisture does not accumulate in its interiors and exteriors.

Keep wooden parts of your house from touching the soil. Wooden structures, including posts and fences, must be at least six inches above the ground.

Get rid of potential termite food sources. Termites eat cellulose, which is the organic material from plants and trees. So if you have firewood or piles of discarded paper materials, or junk wood or wooden furniture lying around the house, get rid of them or make sure they are about 20 feet away from your home. Keeping them in your home may attract termites. Get rid of trees stumps or dead trees that are near your house.  Also, if you have plants or trees, trim their leaves or branches so these are not touching the wooden parts of your house.

These are just some of the things you can do to prevent a termite infestation of your home. For more information, you may call Jardine Distribution at 02-8436011 or visit its facebook page or website www.jardinedistribution.com.

Thousands of Youth Gather for Habitat Youth Build 2014 “Tagbo. Tukod. Tana!”

This year’s Youth Build is expected to be one of the biggest youth gatherings in the country. Over 5,000 youth will converge at Habitat Youth Build 2014 “Tagbo. Tukod. Tana!”

Tagbo. Tukod. Tana!” as this year’s Habitat for Humanity “Youth Build”, happening simultaneously on May 3, 2014 in five key provinces in the country, to make a commitment to help rebuild homes across calamity-stricken areas in the Philippines.

Beginning May 3, young volunteers will sweat it out as they get their gloves, hard hats, and shovels ready to begin the construction of Habitat houses in earthquake-hit areas in Bohol, and Yolanda-affected communities in Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Naga. After Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) destroyed parts of the country in November last year, Habitat launched its “Re-Build PH” campaign with a target to rebuild 30,000 houses. This year’s Youth Build aims to rally the youth to do their share to meet this target.

“Rebuilding the Philippines is everyone’s responsibility. This time, we want to gather our youth and tap into their passion and energy to help get the job done while at the same time serving as role models to the younger generation,” shares Charlie Ayco, Habitat for Humanity Philippine’s CEO and Managing Director.

Tagbo. Tukod. Tana!”

Since the build-sites are mostly around the Visayas region, this year’s theme was taken from the local Visayan dialect-- “Tagbo. Tukod. Tana!” (Let’s gather. Let’s build. Let’s do it.) It hopes to speak more urgently to the Visayan youth to rise to the challenge of helping their own neighbors, friends, and kababayans rebuild their own communities by taking part in the Youth Build.

“For us to be able to truly move forward from the horrors of the earthquake and typhoon, we need to work hand-in-hand as one community-- the progress of one is the progress of all. We encourage the Boholanos to help their kababayans, because by doing so they are helping the entire province,” Ayco adds.

Rebuilding 7,000 houses in Bohol

In October last year, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked parts of Bohol leaving houses in shambles and families homeless. The Youth Build targets to rebuild 7,000 homes in 16 municipalities across the province providing decent shelter to families still living in tents and make-shift houses.

To kick-off festivities in Bohol on May 3, a motorcade of celebrity youth supporters will take place in the morning leading all the way to the Habitat site in Loon, Bohol where Habitat’s Youth Council will begin the initial build. To cap the day, a youth concert open to the public will be staged to further urge the Boholano youth to respond to the call.

Other local festivities to kick-off the “Youth Build” will also happen in Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Naga.

The Habitat Youth Build is a movement that engages young people to raise funds for, and awareness of the poverty housing situation in the Asia-Pacific region where one in eight people live in slums, according to the United Nations.

Now on its third year, the annual campaign challenges the youth to do something concrete to help. Young people from 11 other Habitat countries across the region will also participate and build or repair homes for low-income families.

Habitat for Humanity Philippines is a global non-profit organization committed to addressing the housing backlog in the country.

Shakey’s Through The Years, Good Times, Great Memories

Walking in Shakey's Pizza Parlor in Loyola, Katipunan last Tuesday, I told myself (as always) "here, trippin' down memory lane."

For generations people have been coming to Shakey's to share good food and good times with family and friends.
I grew up on Shakey's pizza , I still love it. During my high school days, with my best friend, we would hang out at Shakeys Cubao and Shakey's Espana, Sampaloc Manila. Shakeys was the best pizza I've ever had, I absolutely love their pepperoni pizza and their mojo potatoes.

Thanks for my friend inviting me to join the Shakey's Business Roundtable, last Tuesday, April 22, 2014, held in Shakey's Katipunan Branch to share great memories, moments, developments and new offerings of Shakey's.

The best legacies come from the most passionate endeavors. Shakey’s Philippines has been a strong brand in the pizza segment of the local food service since its inception. Their continuing success was somehow already evident with the opening of the very first Shakey’s in the Philippines.

Developed by four of the food industry’s giants, Shakey’s emerged as an avenue for marketing San Miguel’s newest draft beer. The first Philippine branch opened in 1975 in the city of Makati, soon followed by stores all over the metro.

Almost four decades later, Shakey’s is now a successful nationwide franchise with over 100 restaurants. Their latest innovation exhibits a change in image and ambiance to feature the present family-oriented, wholesome, and clean atmosphere. Constantly in tune with their roots, the brand maintains the warmth and familiarity that have made their stores a sensation.

They continue to satisfy loyal customers, while gathering a new following, through their world-famous thin crust pizza and hand-tossed versions as well as a wide spectrum of ala carte items including Shakey’s awesome twosome: Chicken ‘N Mojos, and pasta.

RM awardee, Internet Hall of Famer to talk with youth

In a mountainous village in Nepal, a teenager is huddled in front of a computer screen, busy surfing the Internet. Instead of playing DotA (Defense of the Ancients) or checking Facebook, this young person is sifting through an online library. In a rural town clinic, health workers are receiving live online trainings from Model Hospital in Kathmandu. In a remote farm, a man is transacting for a buffalo with another farmer miles away via the Internet.

These scenes are repeated every day in over 170 towns all over Nepal, thanks to the efforts of one man: Mahabir Pun, educator, Internet pioneer, and 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Community Leadership.
Mahabir Pun received the 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, the board of trustees recognizes his innovative application of wireless computer technology in Nepal, bringing progress to remote mountain areas by connecting his village to the global village.

Earlier this month, Pun was also inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame. This recognizes his work in connecting rural Himalayan villages to free wireless Internet and the many benefits it is bringing to millions Nepalese rural villagers in many aspects, including health, education, and trade.

“ICT as a Tool for Education”

Fresh from this new international accolade, Pun will arrive in Manila on April 28. His first engagement upon arrival will be with the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF)--the organization that bestows Asia’s premier prize . About 40 guests, consisting of guests from the World Bank, GOS Ambassadors, ICT Association of the Philippines, and the media, are expected to attend the session live.

The event can also be viewed live online at http://www.rmaf.org.ph/newrmaf/main/community/ustream

#KalyePop: Boy band 1:43 puts a new twist to KPop in third album

Boy band 1:43 puts a new twist  to KPop in their third album for release this April under MCA Music.

Often mistaken for Korean pop superstars, proudly all-Filipino boy band 1:43 (one forty-three) gives the term KPop a whole new meaning in their third album #KalyePop.

The album titled #KalyePop (KPop) is composed of six strong original tracks from the foremost Filipino boy band that popularized “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo,” the monster hit song that won the 2013 PMPC Star Award for Music “Song of the Year.”

“#KalyePop or KPop is our humble contribution to the rebirth of the local music industry. We hope that our new musical direction will advance our mission of winning back the Filipino audiences to Original Pilipino Music (OPM),” says boy band spokesman Anjo Resurreccion.

Except for the novelty song “Ang Saya-Saya” penned by acclaimed composer Jonathan Ong of Sonic State Studio, the rest of the tracks of #KalyePop, including the hit song “Hayop Sa Ganda” and the earlier promotional single “Ikaw At Ako” were composed by musician and the group’s road manager Urie Tesorio. Band manager and public relations entrepreneur Chris Cahilig produced the album while Ong arranged the songs. Its neocolonial themed album cover was photographed by 1:43’s original member Kimmeth Nicolas and styled by Ryuji Shiomitsu.

The three remaining tracks of #KalyePop include the cleverly titled novelty song “Istambay Me” which tackles about the rampancy of unemployment among Filipino youth and the ballads “Langit” and “Pwede Bang Malaman” which carry the 1:43’s signature romantic melody and lyrics.

1:43 is composed of four talented, charming, and stylish men namely, Resurreccion, a University of Santo Tomas (UST) Psychology graduate and a MYX VJ Search finalist; Argee Golding, an international taekwondo medalist from UST; Gold Aquino, an entrepreneur and a Business Administration graduate from the Centro Escolar University (CEU); and Yuki Sakamoto, a Hotel and Restaurant Management student from CEU-Makati and the main vocalist of the group.

According to Cahilig, the idea of producing a #KalyePop for 1:43 has been in his mind since he formed the boy band in 2010 as a reaction to the young Filipino audience’s fancy for KPop music and star.

“#KalyePop is inspired by the musical aesthetics of the everyday Juan dela Cruz on the street. We wanted a selection of songs that can be easily played with a guitar while having a drinking session or danced by the masses young and old, rich or poor in public gatherings,” explains Cahilig.

One of the tracks of #KalyePop is now a certified radio hit. The song “Hayop Sa Ganda” has so far received over 330,000 views on Youtube and is considered the fastest moving OPM song on the social media site. It brought back 1:43, the original hit makers of the song “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo,” to the limelight.

The release of #KalyePop is supported by McJim Classic Leather and Belle Vita. Interested parties may book 1:43 by sending an inquiry at chriscahilig@gmail.com or visiting the 1:43 Fan Page on Facebook.

Luistro to new DepEd officials: "Be shepherds who smell like your sheep"

“Kung ano ang ating tinatanim, ‘yun din ang bunga. Marami kayong mga desisyon na gagawin bilang Assistant Superintendent at Superintendent. At lahat ng mga desisyon na iyan ay desisyon para sa kagawaran at para sa mga kabataang pinagsisilbihan natin.”

This was how Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC challenged the newly-appointed executives of the Department of Education (DepEd) during their oath-taking, April 22. Schools Division Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents are third-level officials whose appointments are signed by the President and who need to swear an oath before the head of the agency.

Luistro reminded the officials of the trials and challenges that may distract them from their responsibilities. He hoped that though those challenges would come, they would still remember how their decisions would affect future generations.

“Ngayon ay ang unang araw na ang lahat ng inyong mga magiging desisyon ay magkakaroon ng bunga na ipapamana natin sa susunod na henerasyon. Ang bawat desisyon ay isang magandang pagkakataon hindi lamang para sa sarili, kung hindi para din sa madla,” Luistro said.

DepEd Undersecretary Rizalino Rivera told the officials that with being a DepEd executive comes the responsibility to, not only take care of their personnel and the students, but to also be an example of what a real worker should be.

“Kaya lagi natin isipin na lahat ng ating gagawin ay tinitignan sa loob at labas ng DepEd. Kaya dapat maging karapat-dapat tayo sa tungkulin natin,” Rivera said.
Regions IV-A, IV-B, V and CAR DepEd executives taking their oath with DepEd Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC and DepEd Undersecretaries Rizalino Rivera, Mario Deriquito, Alberto Muyot and Francis Varela.

The 18 newly-appointed officials vowed to give their best in doing their tasks and responsibilities and to uphold and protect the Philippine Constitution. Among these officials are Fatima R. Boado, Zenia G. Mostoles, Lorna G. Bugayong, Joann A. Corpuz, Leilani S. Cunanan, Norma P. Esteban, Imelda P. Macaspac, Jose L. Doncillo, Loida N. Nidea, Sally B. Ullalim, Maria Magdalena M. Lim, William E. Gando and Crestito M. Morcilla from Luzon; Allan B. Yap, Dexter Y. Aguilar and Roseller N. Gelig from Visayas; and Mindanao officials, Omar A. Obas and Arsenio T. Cornites Jr.

In closing, Luistro quoted Pope John Paul II and challenged the officials to be officials ‘who smell like their sheep.’ He hopes that all officials would grow familiar and truly be more knowledgeable with the youth whom they will serve this coming June.

Nicki Minaj joins the cast of funny and endearing story on friendship movie “The Other Woman”

Music industry’s most versatile talent, Nicki Minaj marking her live action film debut as she joins stars alongside Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the upcoming estrogen-filled comedy “The Other Woman.”

In this funny and endearing story on (female) friendship, Minaj’s role channels a very vocal and fashion-forward assistant named Lydia who works for the stunning and tough New York lawyer Carly, played by Diaz whose boyfriend Mark (Waldau) turns out to be a married guy cheating on his wife, Kate (Mann).

The two women don’t appear to have much in common, other than the philandering womanizer who has been tricking both of them. They become great pals, much to Lydia’s initial dismay, and decide to teach the lying Mark a few lessons to prove that cheating will not work. Everything becomes more complicated when Carly and Kate find out that the charming cheat has been engaging in yet another affair, with the beautiful Amber (Kate Upton) who is half his age. The three of them join forces and conjure up ingenious strategies to give Mark what he deserves, at the same time the bond between them grows stronger.

As Nicki Minaj’s unexpected casting coup added something to the movie that producer Julie Yorn hadn’t counted on: “We all have a sense of Nicki’s persona and larger than life personality, but she came in with the most humble approach and attitude. She was dying to sit at the feet of these other women and learn.” We always wanted for the character of Lydia to be sassy,” Yorn continues. “But what was disarming about Nicki was her likability, which actually changed the scripted character. Lydia became a really important ally to Carly. That’s the chemistry part of it that you don’t expect. Cameron and Nicki bonded from day one and so you just get a whole different dynamic than anticipated.”

Minaj was a welcome surprise for director Nick Cassavetes, as well: “Lydia says things to Carly that are couched as truths, and that are really preposterous, but they have this unexpected truth that suggests sometimes the correct thing is to do the incorrect thing.”

Minaj said Lydia is very opinionated. “She has her own outlook on life and relationships, and you can’t change her mind about anything. She develops a real friendship with Carly. And Lydia really wants Carly to settle down and meet the right man. So she gets involved a little bit in bringing Mark down and getting Carly to fall in love with someone who’s a good person.”

Lydia is an important person in Carly’s life, because, says Minaj, “Lydia’s the friend that is going to give you tough love. I happen to be that kind of friend. I don’t like when my best friends are sad about a guy. I think all women need a friend who’s going to let us cry and mope, but we also need the friend that’s going to say, ‘Okay, pick it back up. Let’s go. You know, we’re not going to be walking around the office moping.’”

Patricia Field helms the movie’s costume design department and styling Nicki Minaj was another highlight for the designers. “It was really fun to get the chance to dress Nicki for this role,” says Field’s longtime collaborator and protégé Paolo Nieddu. “She’s the secretary, and the sexy secretary is an image everybody can imagine, so we went with almost a cartoon sexy secretary, with exaggerated colors and prints and lots of different accessories. Every day is a new Lydia. So you never know what you’re going to get with her.”

Lydia’s looks include high fashion, sexy, and body-conscious pieces that would fill the closet of a girl with a sugar daddy footing the bill. Some of her designer looks are by Gucci, Roland Mouret, Versace, Herve Leger, Proenza Schoeler, and McQueen – all paired with the most extreme, expensive designer shoes that only a diva could stand wearing to the office. Nicki Minaj, a noted fashion icon in her own right, was also thrilled to learn Field would be joining the team: “When I heard that Patricia Field was a part of this movie, I was very excited because I knew everybody would be eating their hearts out when they saw all the clothes we wear in this movie, and I knew it was going to be fresh and fun.”

“The Other Woman” opens May 7 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

The seven days before Easter Sunday is referred to as Holy Week, or the Passover season. These days are set aside to commemorate the brief life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

"Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Thankful and we think about the new life that we have in Jesus.

Easter Bible verses help us to meditate on the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

These verses help us to focus on the risen Christ and bring us hope for our eternal home in Heaven.

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe in this?" John 11:25-26

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Co 1:18

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 1 Peter 1:3

"Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." Romans 6:8-11

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Co 15:55-57

"Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." Isa 53:4-5

"Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died---more than that, who was raised to life-- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us." Romans 8:34

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and become obedient to death --- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Php 2: 5-11

Alex James and Matt Stone heads west of Australia to take a journey of discovery around the Margaret River region in the six-part series, RECIPES THAT ROCK. Together, they will discover unique produce, meet the people behind them, soak in the stunning surf and scenery and draw inspiration from what they find for some uniquely Australian recipes.

With pristine beaches, lush vineyards and a mosaic of natural wonders, Margaret River is one of Australia’s most picturesque and charming regions perfect for taking a family vacation or romantic getaway. So why would two rock ‘n’ roll loving men want to visit Margaret River? One thing Alex James, former bassist of rock band Blur, and Matt Stone, one of Australia’s youngest, most notable chefs, have in common is their love of food and that’s exactly where Margaret River delivers. In each half hour episode of RECIPES THAT ROCK, the duo will take a look at the culinary delights and freshly picked produce across Margaret River – from Yallingup (aboriginal for ‘Place of Love’) to the beachside town of Prevelly – that make it Australia’s premium gourmet region.

Once a chilled out surfing town, Margaret River has long been a nirvana for wine fans. But more recently, artisan cheese, chocolate and olive oil producers have made it their home alongside outstanding microbreweries. Inspired by the high quality Asian dishes and Pacific Rim cuisine, Alex and Matt cook up feasts like sticky Vietnamese pork, Mexican spiced abalone with avocado and mango salad, barbecued marron with grilled asparagus and beach herbs, and delicious desserts like a liquid-centered chocolate cake and sheep milk ice-cream with fruits, pistachios and rose petal syrup.

From beachside barbecues to underground (literally!) didgeridoo concerts, Alex and Matt also explore the sights, sounds and smells of the region to gain an immersive experience. Not only do the boys cook up a storm in the kitchen, they’re game enough to get down and dirty hive-hunting for gooey golden honey, scouring the aqua-blue beaches to hand pick abalone and even play catch with some piglets stuck on an island off the mainland of a free-range pig farm.

The boys continue ticking off their food lover’s must-do list: hunting for black truffles, touring the local wineries, catching their own dinner and meeting with experts who share special tricks of the trade while rubbing shoulders with renowned chefs from around the globe – Alex Atala, Alvin Leung, Heston Blumenthal, Rene Redzepi and Tetsuya Wakuda to name a few – as the gourmet world descends on the region for Margaret River’s Gourmet Escape.

Experience the amazing produce, cook the recipes, hear the music and see the stunning surf and scenery that make Margaret River so incredibly unique in RECIPES THAT ROCK.
