NO LIES ABOUT LYING : Deception may be a human trait we all try to hide

In the time of widespread “fake news,” it’s easy to think of lying as bad and damaging. After all, parents and schools teach children honesty as part of moral upbringing. Acts of fraud, misdirection, and manipulation by politicians and corporations are also called out on the news under the banner of justice. One example is financier Bernard Madoff who ran a Ponzi scheme for years in the United States that stole almost $65 billion from thousands of investors.

History nevertheless offers examples of deception used for reasons beyond evil. One is the fictitious illness “Syndrome K,” invented by the Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Rome to shelter Jews during Nazi persecution.

Of course there are less serious examples of harmless deceit. Just think of stand-up comedians coming up with a bogus story for the sake of humor. Screenwriter David Misch recalls a talk where a critic quotes Louis C.K. to make a point on the authenticity of comedy: “I went to a bar the other night. Where isn’t important, because I’m lying.”

If deception isn’t necessarily malicious, what is it?

The Ubiquity of Lying

Dr. Timothy R. Levine, Professor and Chair of Communication Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, says in a National Geographic article by author Yudhijit Bhattacharjee, “We all lie, but not all lies are the same. People lie and tell the truth to achieve a goal: ‘We lie if honesty won’t work’.”

Like the three instances above, people lie with different intentions. Bhattacharjee’s article summarizes these based on findings by researchers: self-promotion to take advantage, improve image, or make others laugh; self-protection to cover up a mistake or escape responsibility; impact to help others, uphold social rules, or cause harm; and no apparent reason, as in the case of pathological liars and people with unknown motives, even to oneself.

More surprising is the frequency of lying. According to a survey conducted in the United Kingdom by Richard Wiseman, Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, most adults tell two important lies every day and that one-third of their conversations have some form of dishonesty. People also fail to detect four in five of these lies. The results further show that more than 80 percent have lied to gain employment, while over 60 percent have cheated on their partner at least once. Only eight percent claim never to have lied.

Ingrained in Humanity

Whether it’s a harmless fib or a full-blown fraud, deception takes a certain level of complex thinking. Naomi Stewart in an essay for online magazine I, Science suggests that lying comes naturally to organisms with higher brain functions, such as human beings, since it takes advanced neural processing to weave a false story and remember its details.

Psychologist Kang Lee from the University of Toronto observes this kind of cognitive complexity in children. In an experiment that asks children not to peek at a hidden toy while the experimenter is away, 30 percent of the two-year-old participants have lied, while the number increases to 50 percent among the three-year-olds and 80 percent among the eight-year-olds. Even how the kids have given themselves away shows the increasing sophistication of lying as age goes up. For instance, participants aged three and four simply say what the hidden toy is, while those who are six make an effort to invent an elaborate reason to explain why they know the answer.

The study gives insight to how lying is linked to cognitive development. This link has also led some researchers to believe that dishonesty is a product of evolution with the emergence of more sophisticated thinking and language. Unlike primitive primates that rely on strength to survive, human beings are empowered by bigger brains and language to seek other ways to get what they need, such as through trickery.

“Lying is so easy compared to other ways of gaining power,” says Sissela Bok, an ethicist at the Harvard University. “It’s much easier to lie in order to get somebody’s money or wealth than to hit them over the head or rob a bank.”

Catching a Liar

Still, some forms of deception are worth calling out, as in the case of Bernard Madoff. However, not many of us are adept at distinguishing lies from the truth, which may be the reason why fake news has gotten a strong foothold on social media.

A basic understanding of lying can help expose deceivers. In the television legal drama Bull, for instance, psychologist and trial science expert Dr. Jason Bull reveals the telltale signs of dishonesty, such as by how liars move their eyes or fiddle with their fingers when trying to cover up a secret. This way, his clients can become better prepared before they face jury trial.

Globe Telecom and Lazada Philippines partnership brings the future of retail today.

Globe Telecom, through its micro, small, and medium enterprise arm Globe myBusiness, recently entered into a partnership with leading online shopping proponent Lazada Philippines, in time for the latter’s coming 6th anniversary, to help SMEs in the country grow and succeed, particularly in the online shopping sphere.

From L-R: Lazada Philippines COO Jesus Diaz Sarabia, Globe myBusiness Director for Supply Chain – Segment Marketing Anne David, Globe myBusiness VP for Segment Marketing Debbie Obias, Globe myBusiness Senior Advisor Derrick Heng, Lazada Philippines Chief Business Officer Raymond Alimurung, and Lazada Philippines VP for Marketplace Hussein Khalid

Derrick Heng, Senior Advisor for Globe myBusiness and Raymond Alimurung, Chief Business Officer for Lazada Philippines.

Globe myBusiness is the preferred digital partner of entrepreneurs in terms of coming up with significant and relevant business solutions, and is one of the enablers of e-Commerce in the Philippines. Availing Lazada through Globe myBusiness allows its customers to have premium placement ads on the Lazada homepage to promote their products and attract more buyers, with a chance to be featured in the Globe myBusiness Marketplace housed in the Lazada website. The subscription also comes with waived sales commission capped at P5,000/month.

This way, Globe myBusiness and Lazada would be able to help more SMEs expand their reach through online selling and provide a worry-free shopping experience to their customers. This also encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to look into the e-commerce space to promote their products or services using technology solutions from Globe myBusiness.

"We are very happy that Globe myBusiness has chosen to partner with Lazada in championing the success of our SMEs in this age of digital retail. We are positive that our marketplace service tools, trainings and digital solutions will revolutionize the way they do business. This marks the beginning of a bigger future for every entrepreneur," said Raymond Alimurung, Chief Business Officer for Lazada Philippines.

“We believe in strength through partnerships – and strategic partnerships with other enablers help us turn this vision into a reality. This is why we partnered with Lazada Philippines to enable online sellers to bring their products to where the market is,” said Derrick Heng, Senior Advisor for Globe myBusiness.

He added:
“As more and more people turn to their phones and gadgets to shop online, there is a great opportunity waiting to be taken advantage of. Lazada’s success is proof of this. To complement Globe myBusiness’ solutions, Lazada Philippines will enable them to reach the growing online market – creating our formula for digital success. We are only just beginning but through this partnership, we can take great strides in bringing the future of retail today.”

Likewise, Debbie Obias, vice president of segment marketing for Globe myBusiness said that many entrepreneurs have already seen the advantages of Globe myBusiness solutions and how they have changed the way SMEs run their business. This time, she said Globe myBusiness wants to show that with an online store, profits are no longer limited by the number of customers that can physically visit a brick-and-mortar location.

“Anyone can sell across towns, municipalities, cities, and even across borders, removing all geographical limitations. With this initiative, we hope to spur further interest among the entrepreneurs to try selling their quality products and services in a non-traditional way, which is through Lazada Philippines, and discover a new way of doing retail,” she said.

To showcase the partnership, Globe myBusiness and Lazada introduced the future of retail in the 21st century via the DigiMall which served as a re-imagination of the marketplace using a “digital” shopping mall. Local quality products from Lazada merchants were displayed through an interactive set-up.

Apart from the DigiMall, Globe myBusiness Academy and Lazada earlier joined hands in providing a series of workshops and business consultations entitled, “AdvantEDGE”. PLDT is undisputed leader in home broadband

MANILA, Philippines, April 2018 – Leading telecoms and digital services provider PLDT has maintained its top position in the home broadband market, showing a robust 131% growth in its total fiber-fast broadband subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to the previous year, as it accelerated the deployment of fiber-powered Internet services for Filipino families nationwide.

Total PLDT Home subscriptions grew by over 12% year-on-year as of end-2017 to reach more than 4.1 million, including Fibr, DSL, and voice customers. PLDT fiber facilities passed four million homes at the end of 2017, expanding by around 1.2 million from the previous year.

“The market response to PLDT’s aggressive deployment of fiber lines was quick and strong, adding nearly half a million new subscribers. The dramatic improvement in PLDT’s ability to deliver faster broadband speeds with the roll out of fiber and hybrid fiber, coupled with continuous innovations in digital solutions, access to content, and bundled offers, have boosted subscriptions,” PLDT SVP and Head of Consumer Business Market Development Oscar A. Reyes, Jr. said.

He added that PLDT’s fiber-powered SmartCity and SmartProvince programs enabled more Filipinos all over the country to enjoy the benefits of PLDT Home’s industry-leading products and services. Among these services are the SmartHome suite of cutting-edge devices such as the home monitoring system Fam Cam, the cyber security platform Fam Zone, and the multi-functional kiddie gadget Smart Watch.

PLDT’s SmartCity and SmartProvince programs were implemented with the cooperation of Local Government Units (LGUs). The first SmartCity was set up in Toledo City, Cebu in March 2017, followed by General Santos, Naga, South Metro Manila, East Metro Manila, and central business districts like Rockwell Makati and Bonifacio Global City. Cavite became the first SmartProvince in September last year.

Reyes noted that PLDT Home also introduced the world’s leading entertainment platform Roku through its Roku-powered TVolution, an all-in-one box which houses content from top providers like Cignal, Netflix, iflix, and Youtube.

PLDT has likewise launched the Whole Home WiFi service which utilizes signal enhancing devices that connect the entire home to a strong all-in-one broadband and smart WiFi network.

In December 2017, PLDT Home ushered in a first in the market -- bundled offers that allowed customers to sign up for two to three services, such as either a PLDT Home Fibr plan, a Smart mobile phone subscription, and/or a Cignal TV subscription, with a 10% to 15% discount off their combined bill. PLDT is uniquely positioned to offer such bundled services.

While the SmartCities were the more visible areas of PLDT’s fiber expansion, FTTH and hybrid fiber connections were also brought to other areas of the country. Hybrid fiber technology is being rolled out to provide fiber-fast speeds to about 1.2 million PLDT residential customers on copper-powered broadband using VVDSL and G. fast which are used extensively in Germany and South Korea to deliver fiber-fast speeds of up to 500-600 Mbps over copper lines.

PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said, “PLDT will double its fiber and hybrid fiber broadband capacity to over 2.2 million ports in 2018. About 650,000 of the additional ports will be for fiber while another 550,000 will be for hybrid fiber broadband. This effort will not only expand the reach of PLDT’s fiber network, but it will also upgrade its copper-based broadband service to fiber speeds.”

He pointed out that by 2019, virtually all of PLDT’s 1.2 million copper-based DSL subscribers will enjoy fiber-fast Internet as PLDT further expands its fixed broadband coverage to 5.1 million homes passed, extending its reach to more areas of the country.

“The net result is that within the next 12-18 months, world-class internet services on PLDT’s super-charged fixed and mobile networks will be available to many more Filipinos in many more parts of the country,” Pangilinan said.

Neocolours with new single "Giliw” - To hold 30th anniversary concert at the Music Museum

One of the biggest names in the OPM scene, Neocolours, makes its long-awaited comeback with the release of the single "Giliw,” 19 years after their last recorded release. The brand-new song, written by Jimmy Antiporda, exemplifies the sound that they've been famous for -- well crafted musical performance that would bring an emotional impact to their long time listeners and a growing new generation of listeners. “Giliw” is now available digitally on iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon and Spotify under Universal Records.

Neocolours' songs have been a mainstay of many Filipino listeners’ playlists. Their songs such as ‘Maybe,’ ‘Kasalanan Ko Ba,’ ‘Hold On,’ ‘Say You'll Never Go’ and ‘Tuloy Pa Rin’ have transcended generational barriers, and are repeatedly re-recorded by some of the country's top recording artists such as Erik Santos, Kyla, Noel Cabangon, and Nyoy Volante to name a few. On top of this, their hits have a combined listenership of close to 10 million streams on Spotify.

Aside from the completion of a new album in 2018, Neocolours' other music activities includes a 30th year anniversary show “Tuloy Pa Win…And Awit" at the Music Museum on April 28, as well as a national tour for the rest of the year.

JoshLia stands up against online bashing in new OPPO F7 TVC - Popular love team encourages all to embrace ‘real beauty’ to combat online negativity

MANILA, April 10, 2018 – If there’s anyone who has had more than their fair share of online hate, it would be popular celebrities who came of age in the social media generation, just like Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. “Bashers,” or individuals who seem to gain pleasure in leaving unsavory commentaries on social media, often flock to high-profile accounts like those of Barretto, Garcia, and other showbiz personalities.

Barretto, who belongs to an oft-controversial celebrity clan, is used to seeing nasty messages and comments disparaging her looks, talents, and personality online. She has had countless bashers tell her that she might have had work done on her face, that there is no talent behind her pretty face, and that she’s another vain artista. Barretto confronts these negative statements in her new commercial for the OPPO F7, where she is joined by Garcia to convey an uplifting message.

“This project with OPPO is so timely,” she said. “Standing up against online bashing is something that Joshua and I feel is relevant because the audience will be able to relate to it. I think a lot of them are curious about how celebrities deal with negativity directed at us online. I’m so glad that OPPO has allowed us to share this story with more people.”

“Nangyayari talaga ‘to sa amin,” agreed Garcia. “And the message of the commercial is really uplifting because people might say a lot of bad things about you online, but you shouldn’t feel bad about yourself because the people who know you in real life will know the real deal, the real story, and will always value you for being who you really are.”

Capture the Real You

The teen love team—who have made fans swoon over their romantic films Vince & Kath & James, Love You to the Stars and Back, and Unexpectedly Yours—are part of OPPO Philippines’ impressive roster of endorsers. Barretto and Garcia are the stars of the mobile leader’s latest campaign which highlights its upcoming flagship OPPO F7.

“For me, the F7 ang pinaka-magandang model ng OPPO to date,” Garcia shared. “All the features we want in a smartphone, they brought together in one unit.”

The features that Barretto and Garcia love the most in the OPPO F7 are the best-in-class 25MP front camera for the most flattering and natural selfies, the advanced AI Beauty 2.0 Technology, and the Super Full Screen for a truly immersive mobile experience.

Apart from the impressive features of this new flagship smartphone, OPPO got Julia and Joshua on board with the line “Capture the Real you”—a message that the two young celebrities related to.

Barretto said: “This is the first time that I had a project that tackled this reality, and it’s one that empowered us to voice out how we really feel about online bashing.”

OPPO Public Relations Maanger, Eason de Guzman is also happy to have the love team as the faces of its newest campaign. “Julia and Joshua are among the hottest stars in the country, but that popularity comes with a price. We’re glad to have them in the OPPO family and to have them speak their mind against online bashing and promote our philosophy of capturing the real you to a wider audience.”

‘They should stop’

To their credit, the love team does not reciprocate the hate they receive from bashers.

“I feel like the bashers should stop. Their lives will be more positive if they follow the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Focus on yourself, improve, and figure out how you can be a better person. For those suffering from online bashing, it’s a waste of energy to dwell on the negativity. Shrug it off. You know who you are and don’t let other people tell you otherwise,” Barretto advised.

“We can’t really stop the bashers from doing what they want,” Garcia thoughtfully replied to his on-screen partner’s statement. “But I suggest that bashers think of their victims. You should get to know them, what they go through, before typing something mean. Madali mamintas than finding good things to say to a person. For the online bashing victims, the people who matter most will always love you for who you really are. Sabi nga ng OPPO, capture the real you.”

The new OPPO F7 is priced at PhP 17,990.00 and will be available for pre-order in all OPPO stores and authorized reseller starting April 12 to April 20, 2018.

Capture the real you with OPPO and let the world know that you stand with Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia against online bashing by liking OPPO Philippines’ official Facebook page and following @OPPOPhilippines on Twitter and Instagram. Customers are also encouraged to check out the OPPO Philippines official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OPPOPH/ for special promos and upcoming roadshow schedules about the new OPPO F7.

Samurai Drum Rock: Drum Tao returns to Manila

“DRUM TAO – SAMURAI DRUM ROCK”, the return of the Japanese troupe with a spectacular show will be on April 19th – 22nd, 2018 at the Kia Theatre, Quezon City.

The world-renowned Japan martial arts and drum-playing extraordinaires, Drum Tao, have an exciting stage show for 2018 with costumes created by fashion designer Junko Koshino.

The Samurai Drum Rock show with Drum Tao is mainly involving drums but also uses other traditional Japanese instruments. One of the most exciting parts that viewers are looking forward to is the glorious blending of martial art routines with the performance.

Watching the show, you will be amazed at how dynamic and lively the performers are on the stage. The stage show usually starts with peaceful, traditional Japanese music, the kind you will usually hear in Japanese restaurants. This, however, provides little clue to the energetic show that is to come.

Watching the show, you will be amazed at how dynamic and lively the performers are on the stage.ard to is the glorious blending of martial art routines with the performance.

The whole performance lasts two hours and presents an innovative world-class Japanese production that has impressed a lot of people around the world. It is great how it is able to present a traditional Japanese art that was mainly only used for festivals in a way that is appealing to contemporary viewers.

Drum Tao has been performing as an ensemble since 1993. While the performances are mainly reflective of Japanese culture, Drum Tao’s work also makes use of Indonesian, Maori and Korean influences.

Globe to spearhead long-term sustainability program for Boracay Cancels LaBoracay participation

Globe Telecom is set to spearhead a long-term sustainability program to help improve Boracay’s environmental conditions in support of the government’s overall rehabilitation strategy for the island.

With the government’s decision to close the country’s favorite tourist destination for six months beginning April 26, Globe is now focusing on its sustainability efforts instead of participating in LaBoracay, an annual festivity held during the Labor Day weekend.

“We continue our commitment to the sustainability principle of care for environment. Globe is one with the government in its commitment for environmental protection and preservation of prime tourism destinations, such as Boracay, for a more sustainable economic growth and development,” said Yoly Crisanto, Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Globe is looking at how it can contribute to sustainable tourism awareness and marine life conservation in coordination with various stakeholders such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the local government units, and non-government organizations.

“Though our LaBoracay participation is a long-awaited summer event, we understand the need for sensitivity to the island’s biodiversity problems. In lieu of the usual parties and celebrations, we are moving towards a more purposeful program aimed to improve Boracay’s environmental situation,” added Issa Cabreira, Senior Vice President for Consumer Mobile Marketing.

Since 2012, Globe has been contributing to various environmental initiatives and programs including marine life protection, offshore clean-up training, and raising environmental awareness among the youth and local residents. Last year, the company spearheaded volunteer beach clean-up, coral planting, and reef rehabilitation activities during the LaBoracay celebration.

“Transport Watch” - a vigilant/watchful eye on transport and mobility issues in the Philippines

“Transport Watch,” an initiative that gives citizens a platform to air their messages to relevant stakeholders. A multi-sectoral transport consortium “Transport Watch,” was launched last April 4 to create a vigilant and watchful eye on transport and mobility issues and improve the state of transportation in the Philippines.

Transport Watch advocates are committed to push for policy and legislation that promotes better transport alternatives, road safety and education, as well as raise awareness of the Philippines’ transport issues to the media and their communities.

The group will not just focus on transport and mobility issues in Metro Manila, it will also tackle issues in the provinces, such as Cebu, Davao, and other key cities in the country. Several speakers shared their insights during Transport Watch’s launch, including Transport Watch convenor Noemi Dado, transport advocate and co-convenor of Two Wheels, One Nation George Royeca and lawyer and former Ateneo Law School dean Tony La Viña. Department of Transportation (DOTr) Asec. Elvira Medina was on hand to speak on issues related to the local transport sector.

An advocate and blogger, Noemi Dado said, Transport Watch gives citizens a platform to air their messages regarding the country’s transport woes to relevant stakeholders. “Transport Watch advocates are committed to push for policy and legislation that promotes better transport alternatives, road safety and education, as well as raise awareness of the Philippines’ transport issues to the media and their communities,” Dado reveals.

Dado stressed that as the Philippine transport sector continues to be besieged with major challenges, including capacity problems and frequent breakdowns of the metro rail transit, underground transport operators, more commonly known as habal-habal, have been growing in number, even swarming to one of the leading social networking sites: Facebook.

As its first order of business, Transport Watch called out Facebook as the newest “Transport Network Company” since underground habal-habal operators have been offering their services through this social network. Habal-habal operators post specific time schedules and the routes they travel and also indicate their mobile numbers on the social networking site–all under the government radar.

Based on research done by Transport Watch, bookings for underground habal-habals are booming on Facebook.

#TransportWatchPH launch with Ms. Noemi Lardizabal Dado, @momblogger , Convenor of #TransportWatch , George Royeca - Transport Advocate ASEC. Elvira Media of Office of Commuter Affairs, DOTr , Dean Antonio Gabriel La Viña, Dean, of Ateneo School of Government and Transport Advocate, Ms. Amor Maclang of Geisermaclang Company.

“The underground transport service operators offer no insurance, no protection, nor proper training and accountability. Because of this, passengers’ lives are placed at risk. Yet because public transportation inadequacy and reliability that have long been under question from the general public remain unaddressed, unregulated transport services like habal-habals that can traverse roads not passable by four-wheeled motor vehicles have gained ground,” Dean Tony La Viňa reveals.

The largest Facebook group used by habal-habal operators has a membership of around 200,000. But how do these underground operators actually work? A passenger will post their pick-up and drop-off location, what time they need the ride and how much they want to pay. Drivers will then PM the passenger to agree on a time and compensation. Once an agreement has been set, the driver then proceeds to the pick-up location.

There are documented cases where passengers are duped or even robbed but tracking them down has become nearly impossible due to the fact that many operators do not give their true identities. And although there have been many documented complaints about the underground habal-habal drivers, the Facebook page administrators suppress such complaints by deleting them immediately, leaving the complaints unresolved and passengers unheard.

“The problem is that the government cannot regulate Facebook. The government cannot tell Facebook to ban these underground habal-habal services nor to prevent them from posting on their Facebook accounts,” Dado notes.

“So what is the government doing while our poor commuters are forced to ride underground habal-habals while risking their lives and property in the process? The answer seems to be in the regulation of habal-habals, which will make the operators toe the line, professionalize, and make their service legitimate and efficient,” she suggests.

Because of this, Transport Watch is raising the alarm about unregulated operations of motorcycles-for-hire, particularly illegal habal-habal operations that have proliferated on social media platforms like Facebook.

Dado says, “The launch of Transport Watch is a good thing for the country’s transportation situation. It signifies that concerned individuals have realized that vigilance and cooperation can possibly solve problems and lessen dangers to the commuting public. This is just the beginning. Transport Watch will continue to be the commuters’ voice.”
