Safeguard promotes handwashing through fun activities for kids

Procter & Gamble leads efforts to break the germ transfer chain

Safeguard opens Handventure Land yesterday, October 11 at Eastwood Mall as it continues to raise awareness on the importance of handwashing at 5 critical times: before eating, before handling food, after using the toilet, after touching pets and, most especially, after playtime. Safeguard Handventure Land features different activities and games for children, designed to encourage them to wash their hands after playing.

Maro Torres, Brand Manager for Safeguard, explains, “Outdoor play is an enjoyable activity for children, which simultaneously helps their physical and mental development. Unfortunately, based on a recent study, many mothers prevent their children from playing outdoors because they are worried about their children’s health and safety. Safeguard encourages children to engage in outdoor play, as long as precautions, such as proper handwashing with soap, are observed.”
Handventure Land is part of the celebration of Global Handwashing Day (GHD) on October 15.  Safeguard led the first Philippine celebration of this international day for promoting handwashing in 2008, and turned it into an annual event in line with its commitment to health and hygiene education among Filipino families.
In line with its GHD celebration, Safeguard introduces the new Safeguard Magic Foamer, designed to make handwashing a fun and memorable experience for children.  It is a device that turns Safeguard liquid soap into a form not unlike shaving cream and hair mousse.  “With the Magic Foamer, moms won’t need to beg and plead with their children to wash their hands. The soap itself becomes a source of wonder, making handwashing enjoyable for kids,” shares Maro.
Seventy-five percent of Filipino children play on the streets, and outdoors even while in school, making the spread of germs a real danger.  A high level of child-to-child interaction leads to greater and faster transfer of germs. According to a breakthrough Germ Transfer Study by Safeguard, “one child can contaminate more than 50% of his class in less than an hour of outdoor activities. When children go out, there is as much as 50% chance of them being contaminated in school.”

The simple act of handwashing with soap is proven to be an effective and affordable way to prevent potentially deadly diseases among children. Safeguard breaks the germ transfer chain, allowing children to have fun during playtime while staying protected from disease-causing germs.

Safeguard invites everyone to join its 6th GHD celebration in Handventure Land in Eastwood. Tell your family and friends about Safeguard Handventure Land and invite them to experience the activities for themselves. It is open from October 11 – 13, 11AM to 9PM. And, most importantly, don’t forget to wash your hands with soap!

Home head lice remedies may cause more harm than good

Having head lice can be an uncomfortable, embarrassing experience; no wonder those who have it want an instant solution, pronto. Some people who don’t want to bother with a trip to the drug store may choose to resort to traditional home remedies.

Home remedies for lice, to the mind of those who use them, have two advantages:
1) Easy availability because the cures are just around the house; and

2) Avoidance of embarrassment, which may occur when a person purchases head lice medication—such a person would be afraid of being thought of as being unclean or living in an dirty household.

The most commonly used home remedies include the use of gasoline, suyod (fine-toothed lice comb), and insecticide chalk. How effective and safe are these remedies?

Gasoline. Gasoline is a potentially toxic, extremely flammable liquid. In older generations, when head lice medication was either non-existent or not readily available, gasoline was applied on the hair and scalp to kill head lice. Our generation is very fortunate in that we no longer have to use gasoline as head lice treatment.

Why? First of all, gasoline can irritate the scalp and may produce a painful, burning sensation. It’s not made for safe, human skin contact. The smell is also irritating. But the most serious reason to avoid using gasoline as head lice treatment is the threat of fire. It’s not the gasoline itself but its fumes that are highly flammable. When gasoline is applied on one’s scalp and hair, the fumes will silently and invisibly mix with the surrounding air.

The slightest spark from an appliance, a light switch, or a lit stove can cause the fumes to catch fire and this fire will also ignite the gasoline on the person’s hair and scalp. Serious, even life-threatening burns may occur. Many cases of such a thing happening has already been documented through the years. If you don’t want your loved one’s hair and head to catch fire, please never ever use gasoline or any other type of liquid fuel (like kerosene) to treat head lice.

Suyod. The fine-toothed head lice comb is actually effective in removing lice stuck to one’s hair. The downside to this is that there’s no guarantee that the head lice won’t come back.  This is because one never knows if the suyod was actually able to catch all the lice. Also, the eggs of the head lice are tiny enough to slip through the comb anyway, so they can always hatch into new lice and repeat the problem again. Also, the suyod poses a risk of spreading lice to other persons especially if it is not cleaned properly, and if not all the lice it removes are killed.

Insecticide chalk.  This home remedy for head lice has a doubtful effectiveness and is potentially poisonous. Some people make the mistake of ordinary chalk, which is less harmful (but still causes allergies and may trigger asthma attacks) but also not effective against head lice at all.  Others use the actual insecticide chalk (used usually to kill ants) on their hair and scalp. The biggest danger here is that the chalk contains pesticide toxins. On top of that danger, there are no scientific studies proving that insecticide chalk affects head lice.

These home remedies usually have the force of tradition behind them. Having been handed down by the elders, they become acceptable to descendants—especially in Filipino society where older people are greatly respected. However, we must do what is right for our health and avoid so-called remedies that do more harm than good. Taking care of one’s health is nothing to be embarrassed about, so buying proper lice medication should not be a cause for shame.

One guaranteed safe and proven effective treatment for head lice is LiceAliz. It removes not only head lice but their eggs (lice eggs or nits) as well.  LiceAliz is a head lice treatment shampoo made of natural ingredients with Pyrethrin as its active ingredient. It is made from extracts of Chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethrin is proven effective in removing head lice and their eggs; it is safe to use for adults and children as young as two years of age.

LiceAliz is very easy and convenient to use because it is applied just like regular shampoo. It also contains a conditioner that keeps hair soft, healthy, and manageable. For the first two weeks of use, it must be applied twice a week. After that, it is applied only once a week to keep head lice from coming back. For best results, it must be left on the hair for ten minutes before rinsing.

Consumers prefer LiceAliz because it is proven effective, safe, and reliable and yet is priced as much as 50 percent lower than other brands of head lice shampoo. LiceAliz also has a variant with menthol for a cool, refreshing feeling on the scalp. LiceAliz is available in drugstores and department stores nationwide.

"Liham at Lihim" Gloc-9's second album with Universal Records

Gloc-9 rises with “Magda” from Liham at Lihim, his second album with Universal Records.  We might say that Pinoy rap is going through a revival. What we must know is how different Gloc-9's kind of rap remains, regardless.
At the heart of Gloc-9's icon is the fact of his creativity. This is a rapper who dares writes songs from nation, trailing an eye on the things we fail to see, listening to words no one else hears.
If the first single off his new album Liham at Lihim is any indication, then Gloc-9 has again raised the bar for songwriting in general, Pinoy rap in particular.
A collaboration with rock icon Rico Blanco, “Magda” is Gloc-9's storytelling at its best. For one thing, he doesn't take on the persona of Magda; instead he speaks as Ernesto, telling the story of Magda – the little of it that he knows. For another, Magda's story doesn't unfold easily, where many things are left unsaid, and much of what is truth happens in a letter. This is also why Gloc-9 thinks “Magda” the best choice for a carrier single, given the CD's title.
But Magda's complexity, as Liham at Lihim suggests, is borne of the fact that she is trapped in what she does, andwe cannot understand why. Gloc-9 doesn't insist that we understand it, but through Ernesto we are being made to see the sadness in this situation, the nostalgia for the past, the longing for better.
Talking about the inspiration for the song, Gloc-9 says: “I was thinking of reasons why a daughter who was most precious to her father, could end up living the life of a prostitute. One line from the chorus goes “Magdalena, anong problema? / Alam naman natin na dati kang Nena / at sa ‘yong ama, ikaw ay prinsesa.”
That chorus is sung by Blanco, something that Gloc-9 is grateful for. “Rico is one of the most talented singers we have right now, and even though I wrote the song, Rico is the only one who can sing the chorus the way he does and bring to the song his own uniqueness. Sobrang galing,” he says.
“Magda” reminds us that there are many difficult stories to tell, and very few who dare tell it the way Gloc-9 and Rico Blanco do. This song reminds us that there are no judgements, as there are questions. And there is no right and wrong, as there is need and love. If not hope.
Without a doubt, Pinoy rap's going through a revival. With “Magda” and all of Liham at Lihim, Gloc-9 proves he is in a class all his own.
Liham at Lihim will be released in October 2013. This is Gloc-9's second album with Universal Records after 2012's Mga Kwento ng Makata and the critically-acclaimed hit single “Sirena.” Liham at Lihim features Gloc-9 collaborations with Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Quest, Marc Abaya, Zia Quizon, Kamikazee, Eunice of Gracenote, Denise Barbacena, and Sly Kane.

Jericho's "Alagwa" (Breakaway) in Mainstream Cinemas

Jericho Rosales’ award-winning indie film Alagwa (Breakaway) will finally have a Philippine mainstream theatrical release under Star Cinema, in line with its 20th anniversary. The production received an 'A' grade from the cinema evaluation board.

Jericho's first local indie movie, "Alagwa" is an advocacy film about human trafficking and inspired by a popular urban legend about a child's disappearance in Chinatown Manila. The film uncovers the dark facets of the underground business of human trafficking in the Philippines.

"Alagwa" has been showcased as an official selection in various international film festivals last year around the world. As having won numerous awards, most recent of which is its victory globally at the 2013 Newport Beach Film Festival where Jericho won Outstanding Achievement in Film Acting and locally at the 2013 36th Gawad Urian and Gawad Tanglaw where he won best actor trophies for his superb portrayal in this intense and chilling advocacy film that centers on the loving relationship of a father and a son and how it is shattered by human trafficking.
Prior to the Newport Beach Film Festival, Alagwa was first showcased at the Busan International Film festival in Korea where it was called one of the Best of the Fest and profusely praised by The Hollywood Reporter, which described Alagwa as a low-budget standout:

“This sophomore effort from young Filipino director, Ian Loreños, is not only a powerful film about human trafficking; it is also a small gem portraying a father-son relationship with nothing fake or sentimental about it.”
The Reporter also commended the topnotch performance of Jericho and child actor Bugoy Cariño: “The film owes a great deal to the natural chemistry between singer-actor Rosales and Cariño, the child star of the TV series E-Boy, whose playful, mischievous nature contrasts with Rosales’s nervous hen approach to child-rearing. The spontaneity is a welcome change from the usual parent-child sentimentality on screen.”
Jericho’s performance was moreover described as such “Nagging, brusque and critical, Rosales expertly conveys the over-compensation of the single-parent in the tough love Robert (Rosales’s character) shows his son.”
Alagwa since then toured Malaysia (Asean International Film Festival), participated in three festivals in India, in Cambodia, as well as in Palm Beach International Film Festival where it sold out on both nights that it was shown.

The movie had several special screenings in Manila, particularly in 2012’s Cinema One Originals festival, and it also had two special private screenings at the residence of USA Ambassador Harry Thomas. In the last week of September, it was given the distinction of having been chosen as the Best Indie Narrative Feature in the World by the Third World Indie Festival in Milpitas, California among 700 entries from 30 countries.
U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas, Jr. and
"Alagwa" (Breakaway) director Ian Lorenos.
The US government, through Thomas, is in full support of Alagwa as the film aggressively exposes human trafficking and the plight of the people who are victimized by it.

With the upcoming mainstream theatrical release of Alagwa here in the country, Jericho (who is also co-producer of the film) and director Ian Loreños (who won best indie director and best screenplay writer in the 2013 PMPC Star Awards for Movies) are united not only in entertaining Pinoy moviegoers, but also in educating them about the horrors of human trafficking.

“Anybody can be victimized by human trafficking as it doesn’t choose any gender and social class. This is a serious issue that needs our serious attention,” explains Jericho.

Alagwa also stars Leo Martinez, Smokey Manaloto, Nanette Inventor, John Manalo, Jeremiah Rosales, Iñaki Ting, Garry Lim, Jamieson Lee, EJ Caro and in a very special cameo role, the beautiful Malaysian star, Carmen Soo. Awit Awardee Gabriel Valenciano produced and arranged the musical score of the movie.

The film aims to donate a portion of the proceeds of the film to several organizations championing the cause of human trafficking such as Visayan Forum and Called To Rescue.
Bugoy Cariño
The film is supported by ABS-CBN, Smart, Manila Genesis Entertainment and Management in cooperation with ASAP 18, CenturyPacific (555 Sardines), Kaseki, Collezione, Mesa Grille and the Philippine Star.
