Jolly Mushroom makes daily “ulam” mush-delicious

Mushrooms - one of our favorite ingredients in some of our cooked-meals. Why? They are nutritious, delicious and when using our go-to method, they are simple to cook! Whether they're the star of the dish or just an ingredient, these mushroom recipes will liven up your table.

The country’s leading mushroom brand, Jolly Mushroom, brings new life to moms’ favorite recipes, transforming them into ‘mush-delicious’ home-cooked meals.

For the average Filipino home-cook, mushrooms are generally used for a limited number of dishes reserved only for special occasions. With Jolly Mushroom, moms can now incorporate mushrooms in their everyday cooking – a kitchen hack that can come in handy for meal preparation daily.

Moms can now ease into making more mushroom-based dishes and discover how mushrooms can shake up their culinary repertoire. By simply adding a 1 can (400g) of Jolly Whole Mushroom, moms can make any dish extra special and “mush-masarap” – making them “mush-madiskarte” in the kitchen.

Marilou Acuña, Fly Ace Corporation group product manager for Jolly Food Line, talks about this interesting kitchen discovery that can elevate any dish. “Jolly Mushroom can add depth and flavor to one’s cooking. It can be a hearty addition to your favorite ‘ulam,’ giving it an exciting twist for the whole family to enjoy.”

Jolly Mushroom is also making the transition easier by sharing new takes on recipes for Filipino classics like pork adobo, chicken afritada, and burger steak. More recipes that integrate mushrooms, such as pork giniling and chicken teriyaki, will be added to the brand’s YouTube channel in the coming months.

Jolly Mushroom cans (whole mushrooms, and pieces and stems) are available in leading supermarkets nationwide. For more information about the brand, visit Jolly Eats on Facebook and YouTube, and get access to tips and ideas on how to use Jolly Mushroom in your everyday cooking.

SM Share Movement goes to Nasugbu, Batangas The SM Store spreads holiday cheer with new school building, toys

Smiles as bright as Christmas lights, and laughter that invigorated like Christmas carols—these filled the grounds of the Looc Elementary School in Nasugbu, Batangas as The SM Store gave the students there an early Christmas present that is #SoMagical. Staying true to its commitment of bringing joy to communities where it is present, SM recently turned over its 100th school building donation, and The SM Store distributed toys to children.

It was only October 16, but it felt like Christmas morning. The students and teachers of Looc Elementary School could not contain their excitement as they took part in a morning of fun and games, a day before the official unveiling of the two-story, four-classroom new school building.

Christmas came early

Situated in front of the school’s sprawling grounds that offer the students an unobstructed view of nearby mountains is a covered court. On that day, employee volunteers from The SM Store Batangas, The SM Store Lipa and Savemore Nasugbu worked like Santa’s helpers to transform it into a festive spot, complete with balloons and party tables and chairs.

SM employee volunteers happily welcome the kids to the Share A Toy activity.

Christmas comes early for the students of LoocElementary School as an employee volunteer from The SM Store hands out gifts to them.

Students from Kinder to Grade 2 eagerly lined up, thrilled to witness a lively program and party with their friends and their newfound ates and kuyas. They were treated to fun performances from a magician, clowns, a balloon-twisting artist and a bubble artist. They also had their faces painted with flowers, butterflies, and superheroes. At the end of the program, they were given cuddly plush toys from The SM Store’s Toy Department, clothes from its Children’s Wear section and grocery items from Savemore. Christmas came early for these kids. It was a new and unforgettable experience for the children of Looc, whose families are engaged in farming or are working at nearby resorts.

Mikko, one of the students of Looc Elementary School, shared how he loved the gift and enjoyed the festivities, which was a rare treat in their school.

“Masaya po ako sa natanggap ko na regalo. Masaya at magandadin ang program kanina, nagpafacepaint pa nga po ako. Minsanlang po kasi may ganito dito sa amin. (I am happy with the gift that I received. I really enjoyed the program. I even had my face painted. It’s not often that we get to enjoy celebrations like this),” Mikko said.

Dr. Luciana Tulagan, Principal of Looc Elementary, said that this event didn’t just bring joy to the kids but also taught them the value of sharing.

Employee volunteers of The SM Store prepare the plush toys for the gift-giving activity.

The kids cheerfully cuddle their new plush toys.

“Malaki pong kaligayahan ang naibigay ng SM dito sa mgamag-aaral ng Looc Elementary School. Dahil sa Share A Toy ngThe SM Store, maimumulat namin sa mga bata na dapat hindilang tuwing Pasko ang pagbibigayan, kungdi lagi. (The SM Store brought great happiness to the students of LoocElementary School. Because of Share a Toy, we can educate the children that sharing happens not only during Christmas, but there are everyday opportunities to do it.)

#SoMagical Christmas

Christmas cheer fills the air as an employee volunteer of The SM Store and the children of Looc Elementary School smile for the camera after the Share a Toy activity.

Truly, the spirit of Christmas is in sharing. This Holiday season, The SM Store continues to nurture just that through its Share A Toy campaign.

“SM values creating a positive impact in the communities where we are present. We are really grateful that SM gave us the opportunity to be a part of this meaningful event and the chance to share the spirit of Christmas through the gift of toys with the kids of Looc Elementary School. This is a memorable experience that we’ll treasure,” said Shelamie Marasigan, Assistant Branch Manager of The SM Store Lipa.

The SM Store is encouraging its generous shoppers to give back and make a kid’s Christmas #SoMagical by donating a new or pre-loved toy at the Share A Toy booth in all The SM Store branches nationwide. For every toy donated, the shopper will get a P50 discount voucher. The campaign runs from November 15, 2019 until December 31, 2019, with toys to be donated to beneficiaries of the SM Foundation.

Magicians captivate the students of LoocElementary School with their bubble show and other tricks.

These toy donations are a simple but meaningful gift for kids. More than just play items, toys are beneficial to a child’s development according to studies. Toys can help increase their learning retention, stimulate their creativity and imagination, enhance their senses, spur their emotional and social development, and help in developing their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

Share A Toy is just one of the ways The SM Store inspires a culture of sharing and purposeful giving among its shoppers. Early this year, it conducted its Share Shoes program and Donate A Book campaign. Since its launch in 2015, The SM Share Movement has already collected more than 1.3 million items which include shoes, school supplies, clothes, toys, disaster kits and hygiene kits, which have been distributed across different parts of the country.

For more updates about the Share Movement and ways you could donate, visit www.thesmstore.com and follow its social media pages @thesmstore on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

World Vision launches response to Mindanao quake

Following the recent earthquakes in southern Mindanao, child-focused development and humanitarian agency World Vision launches its relief operations for the affected people of Northern Cotabato, including the city of Kidapawan and the hard-hit towns of Makilala and Tulunan.

“We are committed to support the government-led response in Mindanao. World Vision in the Philippines is particularly concerned for the well-being of children“, says World Vision’s National Director Rommel Fuerte.

In the morning of October 16, magnitude 6.3 earthquake of tectonic origin, hit the province of North Cotabato, with the epicenter located in the town of Tulunan. Days after, another quake of greater magnitude occurred from almost the same location. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 6.6-magnitude earthquake, followed by another equally strong quake on Oct. 31 at 6.5 magnitude with a shallow depth of 2kilometers which triggered more destruction and risk in the province.

Based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC, Nov 5), the series of earthquakes affected about 188,583 persons or 37,716 families in Regions XI and XII. Over 28,070 persons are currently taking shelter in 32 evacuation camps. Meanwhile, there are 1,493 more families being served outside of the evacuation centers.

“They are in a state of shock and as per report Cotabato is going to be more susceptible to aftershocks in the coming days. We are appealing to our partners and fellow Filipinos for support so that we can respond to the immediate needs of displaced children and their families. We can do more together”, added Fuerte.

A total of 1,075 schools were damaged, including about 26 totally damaged. According to the Department of Education, more than 3 million students are affected due to suspension of classes. Today, child-friendly spaces will be set up to provide psychosocial support to help children cope from the calamity, while temporary learning spaces will also be provided in coordination with the affected schools.

Complementing the government’s massive emergency operations in the province, World Vision complements and provides non-food items such as hygiene kits (bath and laundry soaps, toothbrushes and toothpastes, sanitary packs, nail cutter, undergarments and malong or tube skirt), jerry cans, non-food items (mosquito net, mats and blanket), emergency shelter kit (tarp and rope) among others.

Cracking the Conventions of Creativity

The first step to creating art involves both the artist and their imagination. How to get to that end point, however, asks a more complex question: Does the imagination lead the artist to break new ground, or is the artist fueled to keep creating because of unbridled imagination?

While this delineation may forever be unanswered even to the artist himself, what remains clear is that it’s important to have a venue and a foundation to let imagination rise and run.

For three imaginative artists—Leeroy New, Ivan Roxas, and Ronald Ventura—they found this first seed to their blossoming art careers in that first competition win that changed the course of their journey in different ways.

A conduit for talent

Leeroy New

Fifteen years since his first win at Shell’s National Students Art Competition, Leeroy New brought and reinvented the idea of mythology and madness to transform the Philippine art scene. Taking inspiration from folk tales and sci-fi, Leeroy transforms imagination and vividly recreates them right before your eyes.

Now, his newest venture aims to transform the world of artists, by providing a venue to channel the madness and creativity into a space where it can connect with the industry and the people.

Located in Poblacion, the heart of Makati’s art sector, Kondwi is Leeroy’s newest venture, a long-time passion project that has finally come to life.

“Kondwi is a combination of many different functions: a black box theater, bar and cafe, a retail space, and gallery,” says Leeroy. “It’s basically a creative space, one that’s so unpredictable, even we are not sure how it will turn out.”

Leeroy also considers it a lab where he can do projects that previously had no platform for them. Known for art that traverses thought and terrains, he recreates sinewy, scary, and surreal landscapes, which can be a nightmare or a dream depending on who views his work. Kondwi then acts almost like a conduit, not only for him and his team, but also for other creatives whose talent he wants to house in the space.

“I like collaborating with other specialists and creatives, especially those whom I admire and those who I know could lead to new work that I would not have thought of on my own,” Leeroy adds.

One inspiration for this space is the NSAC, which Leeroy describes as one of the support he was able to get so he could further his career as an art student. “It’s a major help at that point in any college art student’s career, when most are still figuring out what to do when they graduate,” muses Leeroy.

Imagination breeds imagination

Ivan Roxas

Few artists can make viewers and critics get lost in their work. Fewer still are those who manage to make people forget that they are looking at art rather than real life. In realist painter Ivan Roxas’s case, his works, some of which have ethereal beings, engage and challenge the viewer’s imagination, hoping for a glimpse of the story behind the captivating image.

As one who has never had a conventional path in the arts—taught by his brother at a young age, a full-time painter in his teens, and no one mentor as master—Ivan’s journey in the arts was fueled by one thing: his own imagination.

“The good thing about the arts is that it’s a craft where I don’t need to please anyone,” shares Ivan. “I don’t really need anyone else besides my canvas, colors, and brush.”

This conventional approach met its match when Ivan joined the NSAC in 1997. Here, he was confronted with the realities of what it meant to have criteria and standards for his creations, and what it meant for paintings to embody good values and positive messaging. There is a sense of merging of art as a medium and art as an outlet for the curious artist.

The experience taught him that being an artist means being a student for life. “I still consider myself as a student, and I think that’s for life. One lifetime is not enough for you to really know everything about the arts or your craft,” he muses.
As Ivan continues to discover just how far his imagination can take his works, the audience is kept captivated by the immortal and the usual depictions on his canvas, forever imagining the stories that can be told and retold by the strokes and colors of his art.

Breaking one’s own record

At the mention of “Grayground,” many art enthusiasts would perk up to visualize the hyperreal and surreal work that fetched Php47 million at the Sothebys Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings back in 2011.

While it has been eight years since he broke the record for the auction and almost three decades since his first prize win for the NSAC, Ronald Ventura has proven that he is far from being a one-hit wonder. If anything, the only thing he may want for is time; time to let his imagination out on the canvas, vision boards, and any available creative space possible.

Just recently, Ronald opened the Bobro’s World Tour Jakarta with a multi-sensorial experience. His exhibit was a space that deeply immerses the viewer in an environment of leisure and entertainment. His piece is an enclosed man cave, mounted within a golden dog sculpture. Inside is a sleek yellow and man cave, complete with a collection of shoes, the obligatory paintings, and a colorful graffitied karaoke booth.

A lot of the pieces have allusions to cartoons and pop culture, peppering the space in the same way that real life is bombarded with materialistic cues on end. Inspiration for his works, therefore, makes use of both imagination and the social reality that people live in. “When you are working, sometimes the concept just comes out. The creation of art is continuous, it’s unstoppable. There’s no definite process,” says Ronald.

Part of this indefinite process is finding inspiration in almost every aspect. Ronald took the 23rd NSAC prize for the oil and acrylic painting category. While he still uses oil and acrylic in a number of his works, it is undeniable that this first step he took in the competition has now broken out into a run, chasing after the many outlets that could bring life to his imagination.

The NSAC may be the first step towards achieving one’s dream in the arts. This is the reason why, even after more than 50 years, Shell continues to fuel artists’ imagination with this venue for creativity.

“The NSAC goes beyond tradition—we believe it is one way for art to continue thriving in the country,” says Cesar Romero, CEO and chairman of Pilipinas Shell. “The masters of today began as students and winners of yesteryears, and we look forward to establishing masters of tomorrow by fueling their imagination today.”

As past winners and now-masters of their own art have shown, the National Students Art Competition is a strong foundation on which one’s imagined dreams can become a reality.
