Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Champions: Pioneering Solutions for Local Challenges

 After an extensive nationwide search and over 200 entries submitted, three teams emerged as champions for the first ever Solve for Tomorrow competition in the Philippines, a global program that aims to empower young innovators with opportunities to come up with ideas to solve societal challenges and be the drivers of positive change in their local communities.

Chosen from a group of 10 finalists, the winners emerged after mentorship sessions and presentations to a distinguished panel of judges. In the end, two teams from Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus and the team from Bansud NHS - Regional Science High School in Oriental Mindoro Bansud NHS - Regional Science High School in Oriental Mindoro came out on top with innovative solutions to solve problems they’ve observed in their communities.

Conserving Energy with Intellimeter

This year’s Grand Prize winner hailed from Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus, with members Ethan Marc L. Bautista, Resha Amora I. Gaspar, Zion Mhar Kaezer P. Corpuz, Enzo Miguel E. Abad and adviser, Bryle C. Eusebio.

The inspiration behind their proposal came from an issue quite prevalent among many Filipino households – the high-power energy consumption and costs in our homes and the news of houses burning down due to forgotten plugged appliances.

“So that’s why we wanted to create this solution, to help the community in saving money from their power consumption while also lessening the risks of fire hazards,” shared Enzo Miguel E. Abad.

Their entry “Intellimeter - Smart Electric Management System with App Interface” focused on the energy problem, and proposed a smart electric management system operated via an app. The solution aims to improve energy efficiency, help the sector manage energy deficits, and help to mitigate climate change.

“Intellimeter is a smart electronic management system with a built-in app. So how does it work? We can implement Intellimeter into any distribution panel in any building. When it’s connected to the grid, there’s an AI that can give suggestions on how to save electricity,” explained Ethan Marc L. Bautista.

While the competition was challenging as the team quickly put together a prototype for the judges, Enzo shared how much fun they also had in making the project and thanked Samsung and the judges for the experience. “Thank you to Samsung Philippines for hosting this once in a lifetime opportunity encouraging students like us to find innovative ways to help our country move to a better tomorrow,” he said.

As Grand Champions, the team received Php 650,00 worth of tablets and a TV for the school, Php 100,000 for the team members, Php 20,000 for the teacher, and Samsung phones and tablets for team members and their teacher.

Sea-ing a Bluer Future with Project Oasis

The second prize winners were from Bansud NHS - Regional Science High School in Oriental Mindoro, with members Ezekiel M. Agarap. Carmelo Gian B. Domingon, Zayra Bhea L. Caguioa. and their adviser, Karen Clyde M. Obo, and their adviser, Karen Clyde M. Obo.

Their solution stemmed from problems observed with plastic pollution, especially with Oriental Mindoro being an  island whose economic agriculture rests upon the land and the sea.

“In the ocean alone, our shores are more than often affected by plastic pollution. Not only that, we are also one of the many provinces affected when there is an oil spill along the Verde island seas,” shared Resha. “Not only do these problems affect the nature where we live, it adversely creates more problems for locals. Not only for fisherfolks but also for Mindoreños,” the team shared.

Their entry “Project O.A.S.I.S.: Oil and solid waste Agricultural absorption System with Integrated Solar-power via Filtration Bin Technology” focused on creating a filtration system to remove oil and microplastics from the ocean, thus, helping to communities “sea” a bluer future.

“Mindoro being home to hectares of farmland of banana and corn, we've utilized them in a water vehicle that collects both plastic and oil along the ocean surface. While this project may still be small, it can, and it will provide a great aid of mitigation for the shores of Mindoro,” they explained.

Solve for Tomorrow was a truly powerful experience for the students. “Standing up in front of the judges, sharing our project, and feeling their excitement was such a rush—it made us believe in the power of what we were doing given that it was our first research competition.… it was an experience to be done all over again,” they said.

As second place winners, the team received Php 350,000 worth of Samsung devices for the school, Php 75,000 for team members, Php 15,000 for the teacher, and Samsung phones and tablets for team members and their teacher.

From Trash to Treasure with Tompost

The third prize winners were also from Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus, with members Aliyah Kaye P. Alejandro, Princess Alyssa D. Cudal Tyrone B. Liquigan Cedrick Alexis M. Rivera and their adviser, Jerickson S. Chua.

Having an interest in the overall concept of agricultural wastes, which was relatively common in their province, Nueva Vizcaya, was the starting point for their project's development.

“We did an additional study on the subject and found that the most evident problem at the time was the overabundance of tomatoes. We realized that these tomatoes may be repurposed for something better rather than being wasted,” they said.

Their entry “TomPost: Agricultural Waste Compost Processor” focused on the serious problem of waste in the agricultural sector, helping them to manage waste by repurposing tomatoes and other agricultural waste into compost and other products. This not only provides a sustainable solution to waste but also helps farmers to minimize their losses and increase their profit.

“We started this since agriculture is very beneficial in our society, and we, the people who benefit from it, must preserve, protect, and take care of it,” they added.

On being named one of the winners of the competition, they shared that, “Winning this year's Solve for Tomorrow competition is an unforgettable achievement … It proves that even at a young age, we can make a difference in our community using the skills and knowledge we have acquired. It has further encouraged us to continue innovating solutions for a better tomorrow.”

As the third place winners, they received Php 150,000 worth of Samsung devices for the school, Php 50,000 for team members, Php 8,000 for the teacher, and Samsung phones and tablets for team members and their teacher.

The 9-piece Filipino indie folk-pop band Ben&Ben is composed of twin brothers Miguel Benjamin and Paolo Benjamin on acoustic guitars and vocals, Poch Barretto on electric guitar, Keifer Cabugao on violin, Andrew De Pano and Toni Munoz on percussion, Pat Lasaten on keyboards, Agnes Reoma on bass, and Jam Villanueva on drums. Experts underscore strategies and new discoveries in protecting our children

In the face of the lethal threat that Dengue poses, especially for children, the nation must take collective action and utilize new innovations against the potentially fatal disease. That was the core lesson the country’s foremost public health authorities emphasized at a recent discussion entitled “A Dengue Dialogue: Protecting our Children from the Epidemic” hosted by the Vaccine Solidarity Movement (VSM).

“My oldest daughter had it 2 times! It was very scary, and I would not want to go through any of that again — but the reality is we are all at risk. Wala pong pinipili ang dengue, bata o matanda, mayaman o mahirap. [dengue can hit anyone, old or young, rich or poor] Ang nakakatakot sa dengue pag akala mo gumaling ang lagnat okay na [what’s scary is, you think it’s better because the fever breaks] BUT that is when it can get fatal. Wag hintayin mawala ang lagnat [don’t wait till the fever breaks], seek medical attention & manage right away.” the event's moderator, broadcaster Niña Corpuz-Rodriguez, shared her personal experience. Like Rodriguez, numerous parents are anxiously seeking more effective solutions to safeguard their children against this debilitating disease.

Signs of the times

In 2023 a record year for dengue globally, unusually dryly “slow” year for the Philippines for dengue, we ranked third among countries with the highest dengue cases.[1] Looking back at previous years' data, it was discovered that in 2019, which was considered a record year for the Philippines, there were 371,717 recorded dengue cases, resulting in 1,407 deaths.[2] Approximately half of these dengue-related deaths occurred in children between the ages 5 and 9.[3] If the Philippines not been spared from the record year 2023 due to an unusually dry rainy season, which spared the country from a more severe outbreak, it is estimated that over 1,000 children could have lost their lives to dengue in the same year.

According to Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary of Health for Public Health Services and Chief Information Officer Eric Tayag, there is a possibility of an earlier rise in cases due to El Niño. However, the severity of the dengue outbreaks this year will depend on the behavior of communities and the effectiveness of control measures implemented.

So, now there is an urgent need to utilize all available weapons in the existing anti-dengue arsenal in our war against dengue. Failure to do so could result in a devastating outcome, with well over 1,000 children losing their lives when dengue inevitably hits us hard again.

A whole-of-nation approach for our children

The experts on the panel emphasized the importance of collective involvement in combating this disease VSM Co-Founder Amor Maclang, speaking at the event, urged the entire nation to actively engage in the fight against Dengue, “Public health issues can only be taken on if the private sector, the government, the whole of society takes on the issue.”

Dr. Benny Atienza, Vice President of the Philippine Federation of all Professional Associations and Immediate Past President of the Philippine Medical Association, cited an example of a collaborative effort involving children and the adults in their lives. He mentioned the development of catchy songs designed to creatively educate children about the disease, enabling them to recognize and effectively communicate symptoms to guardians and medical professionals.

During the event, Dr. Vicente Belizario Jr., a respected Professor and Former Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of the Philippines Manila, as well as the President of the Philippine Academic Consortium for Public Health, emphasized the crucial role of media and journalists in raising dengue awareness among parents, guardians, and even teachers. He highlighted the significance of education in empowering individuals with knowledge about the disease, its symptoms, prevention methods, and the importance of early detection. Dr. Belizario recognized the media's power to reach a wide audience through television, radio, newspapers, and online platforms, enabling the dissemination of accurate and up-to-date information about dengue.. “Media, we appeal to you to raise awareness sapagkat may kanya-kanya po tayong role para maka-iwas sa dengue [because we each have our own role to fulfill in Dengue prevention]”, said Dr. Belizario Jr., called out.

A game-changing new weapon

Dr. Nina Gloriani, former Head of the Vaccine Expert Panel of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), encourages the public to “move with the times” and take advantage of new discoveries such as next-generation vaccines. One of the next-generation vaccines available on the market today is TAK-003, the only next-generation vaccine that has been licensed for use in more than 30 countries: the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, Argentina and Countries with dengue epidemiological situations similar to the Philippines such as Indonesia, Brazil and more recently Thailand.

The TAK-003 is safe to use for everyone, even those who have not previously had Dengue. The vaccine was engineered on a Dengue backbone, unlike the first dengue vaccine in the market. TAK-003 can create immune responses at different levels to all four strains of dengue virus[4] helping to prevent disease and reduce the likelihood of hospitalization in people with dengue fever. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization recommends a well-designed communication strategy and community engagement along with the vaccine.[5]

Gloriani's words resonated with a powerful sense of hope and optimism as she discussed the implementation of vaccines “Hopefully maidagdag natin yung [we can add] vaccination. Meron nang mga pagbabago. [There are new developments.] Nakita nyo kung paano natin nagamit ang mga bagong technology [You’ve seen how new technologies were utilized] for COVID and we have a lot of lessons learned from that”, she said. Her message left no room for doubt, a strategic use of vaccines can pave the way for a better future in our fight against dengue – especially in protecting our children.

Undersecretary Tayag while emphasizing the importance of a meticulous evaluation process, expressed a willingness to consider the introduction of a new vaccine. His statement reflects a balanced approach, acknowledging the need for thorough assessment to ensure the safety and efficacy of any potential vaccine. He said, “So ninilaw lang po namin na nananatiling bukas ang Department of Health. Subalit, katulad ng ginawa namin sa COVID, ito ay may mga pag-aaral na dapat gawin at ito ay aming tinitingnang mabuti sapagkat may responsibilidad kami na kung ito man ay irere-introduce natin, ang aming prinsipyo po ay “first do no harm”. [We want to make it clear that the Department of Health remains open. But just like what we did in the COVID-19 situation, this requires a careful study, and we are looking closely into it because if we will re-introduce it, we have a responsibility to follow our ‘first do no harm’ principle.”

With an extraordinary triumph over COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, the Philippines has emerged as a global frontrunner, ranking fourth in single-day vaccine uptake and administering a staggering 2.7 million vaccinations in a single day. Dr. Atienza shared this remarkable achievement at the roundtable panel discussion, underscoring the nation's unwavering commitment to public health. Buoyed by this success, the Vaccine Solidarity Movement (VSM) is now spearheading efforts to combat dengue and other vaccine-preventable diseases, further solidifying their dedication to safeguarding the well-being of the public especially for the children.

"We have to turn up the same fervor that we turned on during the COVID pandemic and we have to right now rally behind the objective of the DOH. 95% coverage," echoed Maclang.

Social media influencers take on challenge to be Creators #ForEveryChild to protect children from online abuse and exploitation

As the country wraps up this year’s Safer Internet Month, UNICEF Philippines awarded the first-ever annual badge of recognition to digital influencers who accepted the challenge to be Creators #ForEveryChild. They have lent their unique creative platforms and reach to fight for the rights of every child in the country, especially the most vulnerable to online abuse and exploitation.

The Creators #ForEveryChild -  AJ Bacar, Anina Rubio, Buji Babiera, Cat Triviño, Ginger Arboleda, Inka Magnaye, Jing Ruiz, Karl Bautista, Raco Ruiz, Reb Atadero, Riyan Portuguez - received the badge and certificates of appreciation during the Safer Internet Convention on Digital Responsibility held by UNICEF today. These influencers’ have contributed to ending online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, including abusive and exploitative materials. This is very timely, as most Philippine children and young people look up – some of them exclusively - to social media influencers for informative content.

This year’s theme calls on everyone to prevent this scrouge and work with Government to step up implementation of Republic Act 11930, otherwise known as the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material Act, that strengthens the country’s response and protection of children to online predators. According to a UNICEF-ECPAT-Interpol Disrupting Harm study, 20 per cent of children, 12 to 17, reported being victims of this abuse in 2021. Unfortunately, due to stigma, disclosure is disproportionately low - despite various reporting channels. Only 0-4 per cent of victims ever reported, and only 0-3 per cent know how to report to the police or to helplines.   

The convention was attended by close to 100 children and youth who co-developed a Digital Responsibility Programme which aims to increase the capacity and protective behavior of learners and teachers in navigating online and digital platforms. It was organized by the Positive Youth Development Network, the Department of Education and the local government units of Valenzuela City and Angeles City with UNICEF support. 

UNICEF Philippines underscores the importance of adults and children in growing their understanding of their digital responsibility. Safer internet Month is helping build youth, parent and caregiver’s digital literacy or the skills they need to live, learn, and work in a society where information is increasingly channeled through digital technology and social media. Ultimately, the collective effort will maximize the positive experience that children and young people can get from the internet, while preventing all forms of online abuse and exploitation.
