SM advocates for water security and conservation through sustainable initiatives

Its social good arm SM Foundation, recently established a rainwater harvesting system at the Brgy. Irawan Birthing Facility in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The initiative is one of many SM programs developed in response to the growing need to promote water conservation, water security, and the diversification of water supply in the country.

This enhanced rainwater harvesting system with an 800-liter storage capacity allows for better water conservation and management in the facility. It collects rainwater from the facility’s roof and gutter, passing it through vinyl-coated mesh filters that ensure a water quality that is safe enough to serve non-potable needs, such as watering plants, cleaning, and toilet flushing.

Following its success in Palawan, SM Foundation is expanding this feature in its upcoming health centers in Laguna, Baguio, and Cebu.

This enhanced rainwater harvesting system with an 800-liter storage capacity allows for better water conservation and management in the facility.

With an El Niño period anticipated to impact the Philippines in the coming months, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has been urging the government, the private sector, and the Filipino public to take active measures to ensure the country’s water security. SM has been recycling water since the 1990s, or an average of 946 Million gallons of water annually, and in line with the SM Green Movement, has been continuously working towards responsible consumption and water conservation through SM Supermalls.

SM Supermalls has adopted the rainwater catchment system in 25 malls in flood-prone areas, collecting rainwater and helping neighboring communities keep safe and flood-free. These basins can catch and store a total of 79,257 cubic meters of rainwater, equivalent to almost 32 Olympic-size swimming pools.

In SM City Baguio, SM goes one step further by launching the first-ever water filtration system, turning collected rainwater into potable water that is safe for drinking. This allows the mall to become a self-reliant water source, lessening its dependence on the water supply of the Baguio community.

SM recycles up to 946 Million gallons of water annually across SM malls and has recently launched the first-ever water filtration system, turning collected rainwater into potable water at SM City Baguio.

UnionDigital Bank Wins Profitability Race in PH Digital Banking

It attained a triple-digit percentage growth in its net income during the first half of 2023 compared to the second half of 2022. The Aboitiz Group-led digital bank, which recently marked its first-year milestone in July, attributed this to the robust loan portfolio growth via the UnionBank ecosystem.

The digital bank’s deposits also saw a 113% surge, amounting to PHP 20 billion, which is 32% of the market share among digital banks. Its loan portfolio has grown to PHP 13 billion, notching a 126% upswing. The company shared that it had captured a substantial 75% of the market share for loans within the digital banking industry as of May 2023.

UnionDigital’s stellar performance, backed by its strong fintech capability, support of the BSP, and deep linkages with the ecosystem of the Aboitiz Group, was recognized at The Asian Banker Excellence in Retail Financial Services and Technology Innovation Philippines Awards 2023, where the company won the "Best Digital-Only Bank" award.

TABInsights, the research arm of TAB Global and a sister company of The Asian Banker, also ranked UnionDigital Bank as number 58 in the Global Top 100 Digital-Only Bank Ranking 2023, which features only two digital banks from the Philippines. The ranking evaluates digital banks based on customer service, market coverage, profitability, asset and deposit growth, and funding.

The Entertainment Pod displayed a diorama of cinema with the Galaxy Fold5 as its movie screen. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, users can watch videos on one screen and type texts and comments using flex mode in the other half. No need to worry about bulkiness as the Galaxy Fold5 is the thinnest Fold yet thanks to the Zero Gap Hinge.

Sleep better and live healthier with the Galaxy Watch6 series

At the Wellness Den, the new features of the Galaxy Watch6 series were on full display. The Sleep Up station highlighted the innovative capabilities of the Galaxy Watch6’s Sleep Monitoring functions such as the Sleep Scores, Sleep Stages analyses, and intuitive information with Sleep Coaching.

Guests also got active with stationary bikes while wearing the Watch6 to experience its various functions. With the innovative 3-in-1 BioActive Sensor, users can enjoy an efficient way to monitor exercise efforts and check on their health as the Galaxy Watch6 series monitors both blood pressure and electrocardiographic (ECG).

The wide selection of versatile watch faces as well as new one-click band options were highlighted as well at the Straps Station. At the Creative Playground, guests explored the new features of the new Galaxy Tab S9 series with a live digital mural showcasing how the Galaxy Tab S9 series is a great device for creativity. There was also a Doodle Corner where guests got to try out the PENUP App and S Pen Handwriting features of the tablets. The Galaxy Tab S9’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X display also had its own corner full of different backgrounds showing how it can adapt to different lighting situations to ensure an epic viewing experience.

The DeX Mode corner showcased the Galaxy Tab S9’s versatility – where the tablets can be used like a laptop with a keyboard and mouse, and how users can experience the multi-window functionality and ecosystem connectivity with other Galaxy devices at the Ecosystem Integration corner. The experience was taken up a notch by submerging the devices in an aquarium at the Underwater Writing corner, showing how the IP68 rating of both the Galaxy Tab S9 series and the S Pen allows you to work or play anywhere.

Above and Beyond: Samsung celebrates 25 years in the Philippines with DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela

To celebrate 25 years of going above and beyond in inspiring generations of Filipino families, Samsung Electronics Philippines (SEPCO) recently partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) for Brigada Eskwela 2023 to help clean and repaint classrooms in Palar Integrated School in Taguig City.

Brigada Eskwela is the DepEd’s program specifically aimed at preparing public schools for the upcoming school year. More than 100 SEPCO volunteers signed up to help Palar Integrated School, attended by more than 4,000 students coming from nearby communities in Taguig City. Present during the activities were DepEd OIC – Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Ayles, Palar Integrated School Principal III Dr. Magdalena G. Centeno, and DepEd OIC for Social Mobilization Networking Desiree M. Adrigado.

SEPCO President Min Su Chu led the volunteers and expressed gratitude to DepEd and Palar Integrated School for allowing SEPCO to celebrate its 25th anniversary through Brigada Eskwela. “When we planned SEPCO’s 25th year in the Philippines, we were certain that we wanted to give back to the community that we have been part of all these years. Palar Integrated School is home to more than 4,000 students, 90 teachers and hundreds of non-teaching staff, and it is very meaningful for us to help them in this way. ” He adds, “Thank you to DepEd and Palar Integrated School for the opportunity to be of service to the children and teachers of Taguig City.“

DepEd OIC – Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Ayles also expressed her appreciation to SEPCO and the employee volunteers. “We are grateful to SEPCO and their employee volunteers for going above and beyond for our students, teachers, and staff. Strong partnerships between the public and private sector can truly have a big impact on our mission to educate the Filipino youth, and we hope that more institutions give their time and resources for Brigada Eskwela.”

2023 National Trade Fair to showcase sustainable and green products

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion (BDTP) is set to host the 2023 Hybrid National Trade Fair on August 23 to 27 at the Megatrade Halls at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City. The event will showcase sustainable, green, and eco-friendly materials and products, as well as digital innovations for MSMEs.

“The 2023 Hybrid NTF is aimed at accelerating the development and production of products based on the principles of eco-friendly manufacturing and sustainable consumerism,” said BDTP Director Marievic Bonoan. “We believe that this event will be a great opportunity for MSMEs to showcase their sustainable products and services, and to connect with potential customers and partners.”

Organized in partnership with the DTI Regional and Provincial Offices, the five-day event will feature over 250 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from the country’s 16 regions. The exhibitors will showcase and sell a rich selection of non-food products such as furniture and furnishings, woodcrafts, metalcrafts and leathercrafts, home décor, houseware, apparel made of indigenous textiles, modern and traditional formal wear, fashion accessories and wearables made of eco-friendly materials, gift collections, souvenir items, holiday décor, personal care, and health and wellness products.

The diverse expertise and perspectives of the jury ensured a fair and rigorous evaluation of the proposals.

Winners of the 2023 OPPO Inspiration Challenge stand to receive a US$50,000 grant, further incubation support from OPPO and its partners, empowering them to bring their innovations and ideas to life, and partnership opportunities such as production and commercialisation of the winning proposal, an incubation fund totalling US$190,000 (tax included), strategic partnership and investment opportunities, a chance to participate in global technology events, and to receive cloud service and technical support from Amazon Web Services.

ERTIGO is a mobile application solution for myofascial pain syndrome and chronic pain, offering ergonomic interactive self-care animations, muscle and posture check-up with AI, gamification, and connection to physiotherapy clinics for personalised self-care plans.

●       EZSpeech, by Mila4AI Inc., from Uzbekistan

A software that helps people with speech disorders improve their speech without the physical presence of a therapist during treatment.

●       Impulse - Non-Surgical Hearing Aid, by Backyard Creators Private Limited, from India.

An externally wearable ear-device that helps those with congenital hearing loss regain the ability to hear without surgery.

●       Precision Psychiatry at Scale, by Mobio Interactive, from Singapore

AmDTx is an AI-powered digital therapeutic platform that provides objective data on mental wellness, which physicians use to prescribe clinically validated interventions and improve health equity, without requiring wearables or constant connectivity.

●       Flint Paper Battery, by Flint, from Singapore.

Flint's paper batteries offer a sustainable and safe energy storage solution to the lithium-ion battery industry, with the benefit of being compostable, versatile, and thus addressing critical issues within the industry.

The Flint Paper Battery and Impulse - Non-Surgical Hearing Aid proposals were also selected as the Media Choice Award.

With the recent conclusions of both Red Bull Dance Your Style’s Manila and Cebu Qualifiers, the competition is only starting to heat up! The two qualifiers showcased the incredible talent and diversity of dancers in the country. With the next performances being more electrifying than the last, the participants from various backgrounds brought their A-game and battled it out to earn a coveted spot to the National Finals.

Red Bull Dance Your Style in Cebu Qualifiers

The Cebu Qualifiers took place last July 15. Having taken place at Trademark Cebu, Red Bull Dance Your Style found its first four finalists to compete in the highly-anticipated National Finals. Along with Baby Titan, the eventual winner of the Regional Qualifiers, the other three spots were given to Nemesis, Taw, and JPY.

The following week, the Manila Qualifiers at URBN QC proved to be an epic battle of dance talent, and JXYB – Dhztine Bernardino emerged as the victor, rising above the fierce competition to secure his spot in the National Finals of Red Bull Dance Your Style. The final three remaining slots for National Finals were given to contestants Darktruth, Luigi and Keycee.

With the Top 8 from the two regional qualifiers complete, only the remaining half is left for the National Finals, set to take place on September 2 2023 at 5th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The other half of the Top 16 will be Wildcard picks.

To be able to represent the country is something all finalists consider a big honor, since it showcases not just Filipino talent but also the Philippines as a place filled with unique culture, traditions, styles, and technique. According to dance consultant Lema Diaz: “Filipinos are very expressive, and that translates very well into our dancing culture. Whoever gets the chance to be the country’s representative to the World Finals, they have a very big torch to carry. They carry not just their personal aspirations but also the collective dreams and aspirations of their fellow Filipinos. Our dancing culture is deeply rooted in our history, culture, and values, and it serves as a powerful means of storytelling and connection.”

As Red Bull Dance Your Style's National Finals is fast approaching, the stakes are higher than ever for the finalists to give it their all and earn the coveted title of being the Philippines' representative on the global stage.
