ILO urges immediate passing of Nograles’ green jobs act

“All the laws that aim to protect the greater good… are urgently needed. The Green Jobs Act, couldn’t come at a better time than now, given the interest from the public and private sector on addressing the urgent climate change and environmental sustainability issues,” said Georginia Pascual, ILO’s project officer for Greener Business Asia.

A greener economy will not only reduce environmental hazards but will also pave the way towards more sustainable development, says an officer of the International Labour Organizaton (ILO).

ILO supports the passing of Nograles' Green Jobs Act, says it is needed more than ever.

As a complement to the existing Climate Change Act, Congressman Karlo Nograles of the first district of Davao City has filed House Bill No. 4969 or the Philippine Green Jobs Act of 2014, which aims to expand employment opportunities by utilizing green technologies or innovations that conserve natural resources or reduce environmental risks. Congressman Nograles is chairman of the Committee on Labor and Employment at the House of Representatives.

First District of Davao City Representative Karlo Nograles pushes for the passage of Philippine Green Jobs Act to create green jobs that will help curb the ill-effects of climate change.

Recognizing the urgent need for climate-smart industries and services, Pascual emphasized that environmental sustainability is a challenge that is interlinked with social and economic issues.

"There are two criteria to be applied when creating green jobs—environmentally sustainable activities, products, and services and conditions for decency of work," Pascual said.

She lamented that people fail to acknowledge the extreme effects climate change and environmental degradation have on work and business conditions that lead to health risks for workers and damaged facilities for businesses.

“An ordinary worker would have to deal with potential occupational safety and health risks and hazards when he goes to work during extreme weather conditions,” Pascual said. “Business facilities can be damaged. Eventually the losses and damages incurred by businesses could lead to closure and loss of jobs.”

But if the bill is passed and utilized well, it will open new ventures for businesses and expand employment opportunities while offering positive benefits to the environment.

“This will create space for new businesses and practitioners to come in. And, in turn, create new opportunities for employment and demand for production resource,” Pascual said.

Nograles, on the other hand, hopes that the bill will help prepare the local labor force and enable them with the correct skills and techniques to cope with the innovations that are expected as greener, newer and more environment-friendly technologies and industries are introduced globally and, more importantly, in the ASEAN region.

Pascual agreed by saying, "The major adjustments and investments would have to be done in the area of human resources and skills development. In terms of government contribution, this would mean rationalizing portions of the national budget towards programs that can support this objective, as well as sponsoring a process that can facilitate it efficiently."

Pascual further said that any change like this one will require adjustments in the private sector but businesses should see it as a long-term investment and their contribution to environmental preservation.

“Any measure that would try to institutionalize a particular change will initially have its costs and maybe entail some sacrifices. This will only be detrimental to businesses’ financial aspect if they will not treat this as investment and as a contribution to a common effort to ensure their business’ sustainability,” Pascual said.

As an incentive to businesses, the proposed bill entitles participants to special deduction from gross income amounting to 200 percent of the total grants over and above the allowable ordinary and necessary business deductions under the National Internal Revenue Code, to be administered by the Department of Finance.

The United Nations Climate Summit was held recently in New York City where nations have vowed to take bolder measures to halt the perils of climate change, while agreeing that measures should be undertaken hand in hand with efforts to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development.

Nograles has also filed House Bill No. 5011 or the "Green Buildings Act" which promotes environment-friendly construction innovations to reduce negative building impacts on environment and human health. This measure is co-authored by Pampanga Representative Juan Pablo Bondoc.

Both the Green Jobs Act and the Green Buildings Act are expected to revolutionize the country’s labor force to prepare them for a greener and more environment-conscious market.

100% of Mayon-affected schools resume classes

Ensuring continued delivery of basic education services to all learners in the province, the Department of Education (DepEd) resumed classes in all 78 schools affected by the declaration of Alert Level 3 for Mt. Mayon, September 30.

DepEd schools continue to implement interventions to address the temporary displacement of classes due to temporary evacuation in 40 schools (as of September 29) functioning as evacuation centers. Interventions include provisions of temporary learning spaces (TLS), merging of classes, and other measures that have been proven effective in addressing education during emergencies. DepEd field offices are finalizing arrangements for procurement and distribution of 15,000 chairs and 300 TLS for the schools serving as evacuation centers.

DepEd has issued a call for donations for additional tents, tarps, chairs, and learner’s kits for the affected learners in Albay. As of September 30, education partners have pledged around 12,000 learner’s kits and 190 TLS to DepEd. The Department will arrange its transport and deployment, if needed.

Furthermore, the Department continues to work closely together with local government officials and education cluster partners in monitoring and supervising both the operation of evacuation centers and the delivery of education services to around 55,000 affected learners in Albay.

C-Lium Brings International Zumba Expert Loretta Bates to Manila

World-renowned Zumba instructor Loretta Bates to the Philippines to inspire Filipinos to have a healthier lifestyle is in Manila this October.

Staying true to its advocacy of healthy living, C-Lium Fibre, together with Live Love Party International, brings Loretta Bates as she lead hundreds of Zumba enthusiasts in two special Zumba sessions in Bacolod City on October 4, and at The Playground, Ronac Art Center in San Juan, Metro Manila on October 5. This campaign will teach everybody that fitness programs can be fun and exciting, too.

Zumba, which is performed primarily to the groove of lively music, is an aerobic fitness program inspired by various Latin American dance styles. It became a popular exercise amongst individuals, especially women, who found their usual gym routine monotonous and boring.

Loretta Bates is a Zumba education specialist, instructor, and ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network) member since 2007. She is also an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Personal Trainer and AFAA (Aerobic and Fitness Association of America) Certified Group Fitness Instructor, making her the right person to educate people on how to live a healthy and active lifestyle through Zumba.

While she conducts most of her training sessions in North and South Carolina, she also travels around the world to promote her mission of helping others have better, healthier lives. And, C-Lium is very happy that she’s bringing her Zumba moves here to the Philippines.

Bates shares the advocacy of C-Lium to live a healthier lifestyle by incorporating regular exercise and proper diet with a daily dose of fiber.

Nowadays, most people fail to get the body’s required 20 to 30 grams of daily fiber, which may make them more prone to diseases such as high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. Taking C-Lium Fibre everyday will help them achieve their fiber needs in a more convenient way.

C-Lium Fibre is made from 100% natural psyllium plant which is a good source of soluble and insoluble fibers. According to the National Fiber Council, the soluble fiber in psyllium absorbs water, turns into a gel, then attaches to food, sugars, cholesterol, and fats in the stomach, and helps to expel them out of the digestive system. By doing so, the risk for many life-threatening diseases, such as heart disease, certain forms of cancer, diabetes and stroke may be reduced.

C-Lium Fibre supports programs like Zumba to show its long-time commitment to promote active and healthy living for Filipinos.

C-Lium Fibre comes in husk powder and capsule variants and is available in leading drugstores and supermarkets nationwide.

EMC Announces Products To Speed New Application Innovation, Reduce Cost and Accelerate The Journey To The Hybrid Cloud

“Redefine Possible” means reducing the cost of running application workloads while accelerating innovation through new application workloads.

EMC XtremIO 3.0 adds new inline data services, expands family and delivers unmatched TCO with a new XtremIO Xpect More Program. New EMC VMAX3 redefines enterprise storage with the industry’s first open enterprise data service platform – 3X performance and a 50% reduction in TCO.

EMC Corporation today announced significant new product releases across its Flash, enterprise storage and Scale-Out NAS portfolios – collectively helping today’s IT organizations “Redefine Possible” and accelerate their journey to the hybrid cloud.

Over the last few years, organizations that have harnessed the megatrends of social, cloud, mobile and big data to build new applications have been able to transform their industries. The recipe for IT transformation is conceptually simple – invest in new applications by reducing investment in the existing application estate. However, the reality is that there is 29% annual data growth in existing application workloads, a continued 58% “drag” incurred by supporting infrastructure applications on business applications, and the ever escalating need for faster performance for specific application workloads.

Organizations that successfully reduce the cost of running their existing application estate can use these efficiencies to fund new application development – building a new generation of mobile and big data applications that will redefine their business. These architected applications need a way to bridge the management of both new and existing application workloads without creating further infrastructure silos.

Today’s releases of EMC® XtremIO™, EMC VMAX3, EMC Isilon® OneFS, and the availability of EMC ViPR® 2.0, ViPR SRM 3.5, and the EMC ECS™ Appliance address the issues and many more. These solutions help IT organization “Redefine Possible” as they accelerate their journey to the hybrid cloud.

New Product Highlights

Now available, EMC ViPR 2.0 and EMC ViPR SRM software-defined storage enable customers to build a modern storage infrastructure on commodity hardware.

Breakthrough hyperscale cloud storage infrastructure – EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) Appliance – is now available. EMC has shipped the first ECS Appliance, a single system totaling three Petabytes, to The Vatican Library.

David Goulden, CEO, EMC Information Infrastructure

“Organizations harnessing the four IT megatrends of social, cloud, mobile and big data to build new applications are redefining their industries. IT must drive cost efficiencies to fund the new applications businesses are asking for. Although these new applications will be architected differently, they cannot become another IT silo. Today’s announcements deliver IT organizations with the ability to redefine possible, by dramatically reducing the TCO of existing application estates, and accelerating new application delivery on their journey to the hybrid cloud.”

Ronnie Latinazo, Managing Director, EMC Corporation Philippines

“Customers are dealing with the reality and challenges of managing a variety of workloads – while supporting new demands to build new applications, both on-premise and in the public cloud. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Today’s new innovations from EMC deliver customers the foundation needed to manage existing and new application estates and accelerate their journey to the hybrid cloud,” Ronnie Latinazo, EMC Managing Director, said.

EMC Corporation is a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service. Fundamental to this transformation is cloud computing. Through innovative products and services, EMC accelerates the journey to cloud computing, helping IT departments to store, manage, protect and analyze their most valuable asset — information — in a more agile, trusted and cost-efficient way. Don Moen returns to Manila on October 17 - “God Will Make A Way! Philippine Tour 2014”

“God Will Make A Way! Philippine Tour 2014” will treat concert-goers to an inspiring musical and spiritual experience featuring the musical talent and skill of the 64-year-old artist who has captivated millions with his marvelous voice and style that gave the world songs like “God Will Make A Way,” “Thank You, Lord,” “God Is Good All The Time” and “Give Thanks”.

Don Moen, the singer-songwriter-producer who gained worldwide recognition for his hit praise-and-worship songs that interpret closely the words of the Bible, is scheduled to return to Manila for an evening of contemporary Christian music on Friday, Oct. 17, at the new CCF Center, Frontera Verde Ortigas Ave., Pasig City (beside Tiendesitas).

The popular American singer will take center stage during the one-night musical presentation from Ovation Productions almost one year after his last local tour that took him to the cities of Davao, Dumaguete, General Santos and Dipolog in Mindanao and which followed his 2012 concert series that covered Metro Manila, Tagbilaran City and Butuan City.

Other Christian songs he has popularized include “Lord, I Offer My Life To You”, “Crown Him”, “I Want To Be Where You Are”, “Blessed Be The Name Of The Lord”, “Celebrate, Jesus, Celebrate”, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”, “All We Like Sheep”, “Your Steadfast Love”, and many more.

Aside from his excellent vocal quality and style, Don’s music stands out for its straightforward simplicity that bares men’s souls before God, and which contributes in making worship music sound so effortless, animated by his smooth tenor over catchy, string-laden adult contemporary tunes.

While many worship leaders can reach only certain demographics, Don can extend to and touch a cross-section of worshippers and believers from diverse social classes and religious beliefs, with many seniors and youngsters enjoying his songs.

A frequent visitor to the Philippines during the past several years, Don has established a solid base of Pinoy fans of different classes and ages and who are expected to turn out in impressive numbers during his coming performance.

Associated with some of the best-known contemporary Christian music for more than three decades, Don developed his musical talent while attending Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma until he became a Living Sound musician for Terry Law Ministries before joining Integrity Incorporated, authors of the “Hosanna! Music” praise and worship series.

As worship leader, he produced a total of 11 volumes in the series, including the first album, “Hosanna! Music: Give Thanks” which sold hundreds of thousands of copies and became the label’s bestseller. He followed this up with a number of successful albums of his own. His music has total global sales of over five million copies.

After working for 20 years in such positions as creative director of Integrity Media, president of Integrity Label Group and executive producer of Integrity Music albums, Don left Integrity Media in 2008 to start a new venture, the Don Moen Company, which eventually acquired MediaComplete, the church software company that created MediaShout.

Don received a Dove Award for his work on the musical, “God With Us” and Dove Award nominations for ”God Will Make A Way” and eight other songs two years earlier. A greatest hits compilation featuring 19 top hits and aptly titled, “God Will Make A Way: The Best of Don Moen” was released by Integrity in 2003.

A prolific songwriter, Don has worked with Claire Cloninger, Paul Overstreet, Martin J. Nystrom, Randy Rothwell, Ron Kenoly, Bob Fitts, Debbye Graafsma, Paul Baloche, Tom Brooks, among many others. He has also worked with talented musicians like Justo Almario, Abraham Laboriel, Alex Acuna, Paul Jackson, Jr., Lenny LeBlanc and Carl Albrecht.

Don’s album, “Hiding Place,” became his first studio, followed by “I Believe There Is More” in the fall of (2008), “Uncharted Territory” (2012), and “Christmas: A Season of Home,” (2012). Don released an album titled, “Hymnbook” as a celebration of his reaching over one million likes on his Facebook page.

He is visiting the Philippines fresh from a historic Holy Land tour on Sept. 9-14, where he worshipped in Israel together with his wife Luisa and other worship leaders like Lenny LeBlanc, Paul Wilbur and Bible teacher and author Stephen Mansfield. Three months earlier, He embarked on a tour of Africa that was highlighted by a three-day concert in Kampala, capital city of Uganda.

Join us in a night of praise and worship with Don Moen at CCF Center, Frontera Verde Ortigas Ave., Pasig City on 17th October.

Pilipinas Tadj unveiled two sedans -- The Tata Indigo Diesel sedan and the Tata Manza Aura Diesel sedan at its Tata Motors Big 7 launch.

Midea’s new wave of cooking redefines culinary adventures

Midea, known as one of the world’s largest producer of consumer appliances, its latest kitchen appliance line answers food preparation woes with all-new kitchen range.

Charles Zhang - Deputy General Manager Phillip Trapaga - General Manager Guest Chef Rob Pengson Joeben Gamatero II - Marketing Director and Jerry Zhao

A New Wave of Cooking aims to solve the food-preparation woes of Filipino households, to change the way you do things around the kitchen.

With the lifestyles of modern homemakers changing at a fast pace, lengthy and tedious meal preparations have become quite a challenge for champions of the household. In the kitchen, it is no longer just about how food is prepared—more importantly, it is about how fast and easy the task can be done.
Phillip Trapaga General Manager of Concepcion Midea Inc Philippines speaks at the launch of their New Wave of Cooking kichen appliance line.

During the product launch event, Phillip Trapaga, General Manager of Midea Philippines shared that
“while meal preparation appears to be such a mundane part of our daily tasks, it actually has considerable weight in our way of life because it affects how we manage our time and, more importantly, our health and well being.”

According to Trapaga, there are three essential factors that are considered when cooking: meal preparation, nutritional value, and cost. “Midea’s new kitchen range presents solutions for each of these,” he added.

A special guest during the event, Celebrity Chef Rob Pengson shared some insights about his ideal kitchen. He said, “A handy kitchen is composed of appliances that provide the best-tasting meals without compromising energy efficiency and affordability.”

Guest Chef Rob Pengson performs a live kitchen demonstration using Midea's latest line of kitchen appliances titled A New Wave of Cooking which aims.

“Most of the time, nutrition and affordability are sacrificed in favor of easier food preparation. But cooking is really more of an art. Once you’ve found the right tools, you can pretty much create whatever masterpiece you want without sacrificing quality. It is all about investing in the right kitchen partners,” he said.

Included in Midea’s newest kitchen line are the microwave oven, induction cooker, multi-cooker, rice cooker, and kettles.

Microwave meals for us low as P1

Leading Midea’s kitchen range is its all-new microwave ovens, which let people cook basic meals for as low as P1. These appliances save on electrical consumption, as it is twice as fast as a regular stove—making it friendlier to electricity bills.

“People often have misconceptions about microwave ovens—claiming that they blow-up electricity bills. But it is all about the quality and efficiency of your appliances,” Chef Rob Pengson said.

“Actually, you can cook using the microwave. In fact, microwaves can prepare meals that are just as nutritious (or even more) as the ones we prepare the traditional way,” he attested.

Midea’s microwave ovens are perfect for quick and easy-to-cook recipes that do not compromise nutritional value. Trapaga described, “Using our microwaves, you can get 10 percent less fat on your meals compared to frying. At the same time, they can prepare basic meals in as quick as 90 seconds.”

Midea microwaves also come with sleek silver-mirror finishes that can smarten the aesthetics of any kitchen.

Faster cooking time, lesser cost

The Midea induction cooker prepares food twice as fast compared to regular electrical stoves. In fact, it is equipped with double-coil technology that saves 37 percent on electrical consumption.

“With rising energy prices, electrical efficiency is a top priority of our kitchen line,” explained Trapaga.

Efficient brewing

Coffee and tea are breakfast staples for the Filipino. For this, Midea has a line of kettles, which save-up to 33 percent on power consumption, while heating twice as fast as regular kettles.

The smart way to cook rice

Another innovative product from the brand is its rice cooker. This product is equipped with smart sensors that automatically measure the ideal cooking time you need to get the perfect rice, no matter how much water you put.

“As you know, Filipinos have an unbreakable affinity with rice. What makes our rice cooker special is that it makes the grains bigger—making your rice more delicious,” Trapaga remarked.

Multiple-modes for cooking flexibility

One of Midea’s most promising appliances is the multi-cooker, which has 19 functions, 12 cooking modes, and 7 auxiliary functions that give modern homemakers the flexibility they need to prepare meals.

“As the manager of a household, you should never compromise when it comes to cooking. Whether it be your schedule, health, or budget, you can get the best by having the right kitchen appliances to help you,” Trapaga finished.
