The 33rd Manila International Book Fair - September 12-16

It's real a great time for us to enter the world of books, interesting and rare books!  Sometimes, bookstores aren’t supposed to be places where people whisper, where people laugh and gasp but book fairs where people get excited.  They are what book fairs are for. Books are the best friends one can ever have and reading habit gives us a refreshing experience and we come to learn a lot about achievers, great leaders and admirable people.

The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF), the country’s biggest and longest-running book fair, heads back to the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on Sept. 12-16, once again celebrating the power of the written word.
For 33 years now, the MIBF has certainly stood the test of time.  Weathering economic fluctuations, political scenarios, the changing Filipino lifestyle, and the advent of new technologies, the MIBF has successfully evolved from an event for the industry and the academe into an attraction that draws readers of all ages, from all walks of life. And after three decades, its objective has remained the same: to bring books closer to the Filipino people by promoting good reading habits and providing a venue for the exchange of ideas among the players in the industry.

One of the most anticipated events for students, librarians, the academe, professionals, and bookworms of all persuasions, the MIBF showcases the largest and most varied collection of literature for both leisure and academic reading -- from textbooks, education supplements, general reference, religious and inspirational titles, self-help books, management books, Filipiniana, coffee table books, popular novels, children’s books, art books, graphic novels, rare and hard-to-find titles, magazines, audio and e-books, multimedia, teaching supplies and services, publishers’ technology, and travel materials.

Teachers and school administrators flock to the book fair to scope out new acquisitions for school libraries, as the event is a good venue to compare offerings from various exhibitors and get the best prices for bulk purchases. Book buyers smile from ear to ear as they peruse endless shelves of reading materials, loading up on books to last them well into the coming months. Avid readers make their way through the booths, checking out publishers’ new offerings, and queueing up to get books signed by authors and illustrators.

Peals of laughter and delight ring through the halls as youngsters watch stories come to life in simultaneous storytelling sessions. Eyes light up at the sight of the year’s crop of new books to read, little hands get busy exploring demonstrations of the latest learning technology, and little feet dash to meet their favorite book characters.

Several co-located events are also slated at the MIBF, ensuring added attractions for a wide variety of interests:

The Best of Anime 2012
(Sept. 15 & 16, Function Room 4 & 5), a festival featuring anime exhibits, gaming, cosplay, concert and special activities that will thrill anime and manga enthusiasts;

Super Kids 2012
(Sept. 14-15 , Function Room 3), an early childhood education conference;

Facets of Wellness
(Sept. 14-15, Function Rooms 1&2), a two-day health and wellness fair.

MIBF runs from Sept. 14-18 at the SMX Convention Center, Seashell Drive, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. MIBF is organized by Primetrade Asia, Inc. in partnership with Asian Catholic Communicators, Inc., Book Development Association of the Philippines, Philippine Booksellers Association, Inc., and Publishers Representatives Organization of the Philippines.

Mar Roxas replaced Jesse Robredo as DILG Secretary

President Benigno S. Aquino III appointed Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel Roxas II as the new head of the Department of Interior and Local Government, replacing Secretary Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash off the coasts of Masbate on August 18.

Aquino expressed his full confidence on Roxas saying, "Sa kanya ako nagtiwala: Anuman ang mangyari, alam kong itutuloy ni Mar ang mga ipinaglalaban natin, at oras na hingin nating sumabak siya sa anumang giyera, hindi niya tayo bibiguin. (I trust him: Whatever happens, I know Mar will continue what we are fighting for, and when we ask him to go to war, he won't disappoint us.)"

Statement of Secretary Mar Roxas on his appointment as the Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, August 31, 2012.

More than this, I have big shoes, or big tsinelas, to fill.

I continue to serve at his pleasure. Habang tinitimon ng Pangulo ang barko ng bansa, karangalan ko po na makisagwan, sa pagtulong sa kanyang agenda.

Maraming salamat. Magandang hapon.

Bucoy’s ‘Walang Kukurap’ explores the darkest Filipino soul

After a successful run of the 110-year-old sarswela of Severino Reyes’ ‘Walang Sugat’, Tanghalang Pilipino (TP), Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) resident theater company presents a highly-controversial play ‘Walang Kukurap’, written by Ms. Layeta Bucoy, considered by many as Quentin Tarantino’s female in theaters. Ms. Layeta Bucoy’s play is set to open on September 14 at CCP’s Tanghalang Huseng Batute.

In an interview with the playwright Layeta Bucoy, she mentioned that she got inspired by a political blogger named Christopher Bonoan that brought her attention to the Article 11 Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, which states that public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must, at all times, be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency; act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.
Bucoy stressed: “The questions that lingered in my mind: But what if the public office is taken as the extension of one's private or personal interests or what if the public office is perceived as the means to further such interests? What if public trust is ignored for the public office is treated as a private trust fund?”

The play is highly political in nature that explores the darkest Filipino soul. ‘Walang Kukurap’ as a production will serve as a forceful reminder that if people do not take the responsibility to better this world, then there is no need to die just to experience hell.
The same team that brought Dulaang UP’s shocking adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Andronicus’ is the artistic collaboration between the director-playwright tandem of Tuxqs Rutaquio and Layeta Bucoy together with TP’s homegrown talents—the Actors Company led by Jonathan Tadioan, Marco Viaña, Regina De Vera, Nicolo Magno, Ralph Mateo, Remus Villanueva, Doray Dayao, April Joy Iñigo, and Jovanni Cadag.
It will also feature veteran and competent theater actors who have crossed over to the mainstream arts, like Suzette Ranillo, Sherry Lara, Mymy Davao, Crispin Pineda, Pewee O’Hara, Lou Veloso, Ding Navasero, Nar Cabico, and Delphine Buencamino.

With the TP Actors Company:
JONATHAN TADIOAN
MARCO VIANA
REGINA DE VERA
NICOLO MAGNO
RALPH MATEO
REMUS VILLANUEVA
DORAY DAYAO
APRIL JOY INIGO
JOVANNI CADAG

Another highlight of this second offering is the featuring of GLOC 9 on special dates of its run.

For more details of the play please visit, Tanghalang Pilipino’s official website on tanghalangpilipino.org.ph or contact TP office at (632) 832-1125 locals 1620/1621 or +639177500107 or call TicketWorld at (632) 891-999. The show will run until October 7.

Fight obesity with proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle

With just food as your medicine, the Cohen Program allows you to lose weight fast and keep it off safely and effectively.

For most of us, losing weight is a major challenge and losing weight fast and keeping it off is even more daunting.  Now, there is a safe and effective way to lose all the unwanted pounds without going through extreme procedures like liposuction or the risk of side effects from diet pills and injections.

The Cohen Program is an individually-tailored weight loss program that allows all types of people, such as housewives, busy executives, students, and even those who don’t have time to exercise, to lose an average of 8 – 10 lbs. in a month with food as medicine.  The program corrects hormonal imbalance and is developed by Dr. Rami Cohen, MD, an international specialist renowned for his research on hormones involved in obesity and weight loss.

Dr. Cohen’s research identified HGH, insulin and serotonin as responsible for obesity.  HGH preserves muscle tissue and breaks down fat; insulin which regulates blood sugar levels and therefore stops hunger pangs, and serotonin, which tells the body when it is full or satisfied.  In people who suffer from “obesity syndrome,” the HGH level is low; unnaturally high levels of insulin are released, and serotonin is not discharged correctly.  As a result, obese people constantly crave food and, despite how little or how much they eat, they still gain weight.

With the Cohen Program, Dr. Cohen personally develops an individually tailored Eating Plan.  Each person undergoes a blood test and the results are used to analyze their unique blood chemistry.  A personalized eating plan which triggers the body’s natural ability to shed off fat rapidly and safely is then developed to restore hormonal balance.

The Eating Plan consists of three meals a day taken in specific quantities from the basic food groups of protein, vegetable, fruit and carbohydrate.  No exotic or expensive food needs to be purchased.  The essential formula is the specific quantity and combination unique to each person.

Fight obesity with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle

The specialized Eating Plan is followed by a short, stabilizing Refeeding Program, to reintroduce rich foods without upsetting the balance created by the Eating Plan.  This ensures that the weight won’t be regained once a patient resumes normal eating, provided that management guidelines are faithfully followed.

“The Cohen Program is not a diet, it is a lifestyle,” says Barbara Young, CEO of Cohen’s Lifestyle Centre Philippines.

“Following the personalized program precisely will allow the body to correct the chemical imbalance naturally.  The Cohen Program is also a safer, healthier and cheaper alternative to invasive procedures,” says Barbara, herself a beneficiary of the program.

Some have tried the Cohen Program:

Others who have benefited from the Cohen Program include consultant Rescina Bhagwani, fresh graduate Karen Gayle Sison and entrepreneur Jeffrey Tan.  Prior to the Cohen Program, Rescina tipped the scales at 210 lbs.  She lived a sedentary lifestyle and loved indulging in buffet meals.  “My close friends and I would also dine at least twice a week,” says Rescina.  Karen weighed 220 lbs., a result of her “eating here and there” lifestyle.  In college, she says, “I practically lived fast food every day.”  Compounding matters was that Karen “believed that every problem can be solved by making and eating food.”  Just like Karen, Jeffrey loved to eat like it was a feast.  Making matters worse was Jeffrey’s sedentary lifestyle, making him a hefty 291 lbs.

Rescina Bhagwani- before and after taking part in the Cohen Program
Eventually, the unhealthy eating habits of Rescina, Karen and Jeffrey began to take their toll.  Rescina got tired easily and her blood pressure was always elevated at 170/110.  Karen’s menstrual period became irregular and she was soon diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).  “I suddenly was at risk not only for infertility but also diabetes and cancer,” says Karen.  For Jeffrey, being overweight made it difficult for him to achieve even the simplest of tasks.  “Picking things up from the floor or just tying my shoe lace took a lot of effort,” says Jeffrey.

Fully-committed to transform their lives for the better, Rescina, Karen and Jeffrey enrolled in the Cohen Program.  In 10 months, Rescina shed 86 lbs, while Karen and Jeffrey lost 90 lbs. and 120 lbs, respectively within 8 months. Needless to say, they are thrilled with the results.

“I.m out of medication for hypertension, I can play an hour of badminton or do yoga and not feel tired and I’m now ready to take physical activities for sustained health,” says Rescina.

“My life became better.  I started getting my monthly periods, I feel happier and livelier than I ever did before,” says Karen.

Jeffrey says, “I feel light, agile, everything feels easy to do.  I even do 120 push ups each morning to complement my daily morning exercise.”

Jeffrey Tan- before and after taking part in the Cohen Program
The life-changing benefits that Karen, Jeffrey and thousands of other satisfied Cohen graduates continue to inspire Barbara and her colleagues Regina Chuavon and Dr. Angel Rodriguez-Bandola.

“The Cohen Program is very simple to follow.  Food is the only thing you take.  There are no injections, exercise, diet pills, meal replacements or special foods, simply the food already in your kitchen.  Best of all, you don’t have to starve yourself on the program, as it is a balanced eating plan,” says Regina.

Fight obesity with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle

For Dr. Bandola, the growing rate of obesity-related diseases like diabetes and hypertension is a major concern.  “As with any disease, prevention is always the best form of medicine and the Cohen Program therefore makes for a sound health investment,” says Dr. Bandola.

The positive results enjoyed by countless of other Cohen graduates spur them to continue to save and transform the lives of those affected by obesity.  “We see our work at the Cohen’s Lifestyle Centre Philippines as an advocacy.  Our mission is to transform lives and help Filipinos adopt a healthy lifestyle.  With 1 out of every 4 adult Filipinos overweight, we know that the Cohen Program will be able to help a lot of people.  The Cohen Program is about spreading the message of hope and encouragement to those looking for a proven, safe and sustainable solution to obesity,” adds Barbara.

To know more about the Cohen Program, visit the Cohen’s Lifestyle Centre at Suite 1006, 10th Floor Medical Plaza Makati Building, Amorsolo cor. de la Rosa Streets, Legaspi Village, Makati City.  You may also log on to www.cohenlifestyle.com.ph, email info@cohenlifestyle.com.ph or call 502-1090, 501-5237.

‘Zero Defect Campaign’ Launched On RCD Land Inc.’s 25th Anniversary event

RCD Land Inc., a real estate & property development company dedicated to providing affordable yet quality housing projects celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Bellevue Hotel in Filinvest Corporate City last August 16, 2012.

More than 600 guests, including tri-media and bloggers attended the event. Most of the attendees were employees and executives from the company, special guests and its partners for success.

Roland C. Delantar, founder and president of RCD Land Inc. also unveiled during the event its ‘Zero Defect Campaign’ program for its housing projects. Together with RCD Development, its construction arm, the program strengthens the company’s campaign for the flawless construction of each housing unit, and to see to it that the supplies, from roof sheets to nails are in great condition before and during construction.  “RCD Development has built its own warehouse, where materials are brought in and checked for quality assurance. Each supplier should meet the specifications we strictly require from them. We want to give our buyers their money’s worth. That is good business for us,” Delantar explained.

Reaching 25 years is a big milestone for any company. “It’s really about commitment to the continuous success of the business endeavor,” says Delantar when asked about what he attributes their success to. With the company’s long experience and stability, they are confident that they will remain a key player in the real estate industry in the coming years.
Their town projects are aimed at providing Filipinos with world-class but affordable homes. They also intend to help the government in its fight against homelessness, poverty and to reduce the housing backlog. Flagship projects of RCD Land are the following: RCD Royale Homes in Silang, Cavite; Winter Breeze Homes in General Trias, Cavite; RCD Homes East in Tanay, Rizal; RCD BF Executive Townhomes in Paranaque; RCD Pasay Townhomes; RCD Villas De Imus, RCD Villas De Mambog, and RCD Villas Silverhomes.

RCD Land Inc. is the project development arm of the RCD Group of Companies. Delantar said RCD is also into property sales & real estate marketing thru the RCD Realty Marketing Corporation. The company's mission is to help every Filipino realize his dream of having his own home that is affordable but comparable to world class standards.
Aside from it being Delantar’s initials, RCD also stands for the company’s core business roles; R for real estate marketing, C for Contractor, and D for Developer. Delantar first established the RCD Realty Corporation in August 16, 1987 to market affordable housing projects and eventually ventured into the construction of individual housing units and small pocket developments. The anniversary celebration incidentally coincides with its founder’s birthday on the 15th of August.
