Naga City Pilots Expanded Waste Management Operations Training with Coca-Cola, TESDA

NAGA City, Philippines– Coca-Cola Philippines, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the City Government of Naga, and the Camarines Sur Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CASIFMAS) have formalized a partnership to deliver the Solid Waste Management Operations (SWMO) Level III Training Program in Naga City. This marks the first official rollout of the program under the expanded Trash Free Pilipinas Program (TFPP) framework.

Lead representatives Maria Christine Ponce-Garcia, Senior Director for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Coca-Cola Philippines; Hon. Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, Mayor of Naga City; TESDA Secretary Kiko Benitez and other officials from TESDA, Coca-Cola Philippines and City Government of Naga pose after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Solid Waste Management Operations (SWMO) Level III Training Program.

The Memorandum of Agreement signing and Training Induction Program (TIP) were held on June 17, 2026, at Sitio Pasto, Barangay Cararayan, Naga City. bringing together national and local government agencies, academic partners, community representatives, and private sector stakeholders to launch a training initiative aimed at strengthening local capacities in ecological solid waste management.

The event was attended by TESDA Secretary Kiko Benitez, Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo, and Coca-Cola Philippines Senior Director for Public Affairs, Sustainability & Communications Christine Ponce-Garcia.

Helping build local capacity for waste management

As local governments work to meet the requirements of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, many Local Government Units (LGUs) and barangays continue to face capacity gaps, particularly in technical planning, waste segregation practices, and community-level implementation. The SWMO Level III Training Program is designed to help address these challenges.

The training program equips barangay officials, LGU personnel, and environmental workers with practical skills in waste management planning, materials recovery operations, waste segregation systems, information and education campaigns, enterprise development, and local policy formulation. Participants complete a combination of classroom learning, fieldwork and applied outputs, including the development of barangay solid waste management plans.

The event formally welcomes the first batch of participants to the SWMO Level III Training Program, bringing together trainees and partners committed to strengthening local waste management systems in Naga City.

“Solid waste management should be recognized and supported like any other essential profession. Programs like this help strengthen technical capability at the barangay level while opening opportunities to skills recognition and employment.” said Ponce-Garcia.

Naga City was selected as the first rollout site under the expanded TFPP framework based on its existing and active solid waste management programs and high levels of community participation. The site will serve as a learning reference and a demonstration model for other LGUs across the country, considering similar training approaches.

"Naga City has long been committed to responsible waste management, but we know there is always more we can do. This program strengthens the people doing the work on ground, our barangay officials, and frontline workers." said Robredo. “It supports a more consistent and effective approach to waste management across our communities.”

Clear roles for implementation

TESDA serves as the lead technical institution for the SWMO Level III Training Program, overseeing curriculum development, training delivery standards and requirements, accreditation and national program institutionalization.

Meanwhile, CASIFMAS is responsible for local training implementation in Naga City. The City Government of Naga provides the training site and supports participant coordination, monitoring, and community engagement. Coca-Cola Philippines supports the program through framework development and support for test training runs, working alongside government and academic partners.

“This is another proof of how tech-voc builds the nation, as the SWMO Level III program allows us to equip LGUs and barangays with skills that will make real environmental impact,” said Benitez. “TESDA is proud to help upgrade our solid waste management systems, which will ultimately benefit the Filipino people,” said Benitez.

The first batch of participants includes barangay officers and solid waste management personnel from across Naga City.

From pilot training to a national training program

The Trash Free Pilipinas Program traces its roots to consultations by Coca-Cola Philippines conducted in 2021 in Pavia, Iloilo, and Bacolod City, where barangay officials identified and highlighted persistent challenges in implementing RA 9003.

In response, Coca-Cola Philippines and TESDA co-developed a grassroots training program model, first piloted in Angono, Rizal in 2022 under the National Solid Waste Management Training Program.

The Angono pilot ran for approximately 22 days and combined classroom instruction, fieldwork, and community consultations. Of the 36 initial enrollees, 29 completed the program and produced barangay solid waste management plans, information education campaign materials (IEC), enterprise concepts, and draft ordinances.

Since then, the program has expanded its trainer base, strengthened LGU partnerships, developed regional lead trainers, and established linkages to livelihood initiatives related to recyclable materials and small enterprise development, while also helping enable access to green financing for waste workers and microentrepreneurs. TESDA is now institutionalizing SWMO Level III as part of its national green skills and technical-vocational education offerings.

Shared commitment to stronger local systems

The Naga City rollout reflects what multi-sectoral collaboration can accomplish when the government, communities, academic institutions and the private sector work toward a shared goal of strengthening local solid waste management systems.

Coca-Cola Philippines, TESDA, and the City Government of Naga will continue working with partners to support skills development, implementation capacity, and community-based waste management initiatives.

EastWest Rural Bank Boosts Back-to-School Readiness through DepEd Partnerships

Expanding support for DepEd with learner protection, teacher wellness, and Brigada Eskwela initiatives

EastWest Rural Bank donated 20 smartphones to DepEd Learner Support Center to strengthen responsiveness of learner protection services nationwide, including mental health, child welfare, and anti-bullying response.

As classes open nationwide this June, EastWest Rural Bank (EWRB)—EastWest Banking Corporation’s rural banking arm—is strengthening its support for both students and educators. The Bank is rolling out a multi-faceted program focused on learner protection, teacher wellness, and community engagement initiatives in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd).

“These initiatives reflect our shared commitment with DepEd as the new school year begins,” said EWRB President Sheila Marasigan-Bajado. “We believe that supporting education means caring for both learners and teachers—by strengthening protection systems, promoting health and financial well-being, and helping create safe, ready learning environments for every Filipino child.”

Among these initiatives is the donation of 20 smartphones to DepEd Learner Support Center, aimed at strengthening communication and improving responsiveness of learner protection services nationwide, including mental health, child welfare, and anti-bullying response.  The turnover was held during the YAKAP at Kalinga Caravan across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

To support teacher readiness, EWRB continues its free Annual Physical Test (APT) for Teachers, providing health consultations and mobile check-up services. The program, which has already reached over 4,000 educators since 2024, now also integrates GuroWAIS, delivering financial literacy sessions to help teachers strengthen money management and long-term financial well-being.

Complementing these efforts, EWRB also contributed in-kind donations such as cleaning materials and supplies to selected schools, alongside employee volunteerism efforts in support of Brigada Eskwela.

“This back-to-school season reminds us that education is a shared responsibility,” said Marasigan-Bajado. “We believe in building a future where every learner and educator feel protected, valued, and supported, and we are privileged to work alongside partners like DepEd in turning this vision into reality.”

Chevron Batangas Terminal supports sea turtle hatching and population growth

Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings emerge at the Chevron Batangas Terminal.

Batangas, Philippines Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI) successfully released 146 sea turtle hatchlings into open waters recently, bringing the total number of turtles nurtured through the program to 4,261 over the years. Each release represents a meaningful step toward supporting the growth of the species in Batangas and maintaining balance within the local marine ecosystem.

This milestone is part of CPI’s sustained commitment to environmental stewardship, anchored in nearly two decades of coastal cleanup initiatives along its Batangas terminal. These efforts have helped transform sections of the shoreline into safer nesting grounds for Olive Ridley sea turtles—a species increasingly threatened by illegal trade and plastic pollution. By maintaining cleaner, more protected coastal environments, CPI continues to support conditions where marine life can thrive.

Chevron’s annual coastal cleanup program reflects its broader approach to sustainability and responsible operations. Beyond its role as an energy provider, the company remains committed to initiatives that advance environmental protection while contributing to the long-term well-being of host communities across the Philippines.

San Marino Consulate Expands Education Efforts Through Partnerships for Filipino Youth

As education continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world, meaningful partnerships have become increasingly important in expanding learning opportunities for students beyond the classroom. Through collaborations with local organizations, schools, and community groups, the Consulate General of the Republic of San Marino in the Philippines continues to strengthen programs that help young Filipinos grow academically, culturally, and socially.

By working closely with educational institutions and community stakeholders, the Consulate has expanded initiatives that promote lifelong learning and expose students to broader cultural and global perspectives. These efforts reflect the growing understanding that education today extends beyond textbooks and traditional instruction—it also involves nurturing creativity, cultural awareness, and a deeper appreciation of the world.

According to Consul General Jean Henri Lhuillier, education must equip young people with the skills and mindset needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected future.

“Education today must prepare students not only to read and write, but also to understand the world around them, appreciate culture, and adapt to the future. Young learners need opportunities that encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong desire to learn,” said Lhuillier.

This vision has guided several educational and cultural initiatives supported by the Consulate over the years. Beyond promoting literacy, these programs seek to create enriching learning experiences that help students become globally aware while remaining grounded in their communities and cultural identity.

Among the Consulate’s longstanding collaborators is Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. (CLFI), whose partnership has further strengthened efforts to make educational and community-based programs more accessible to Filipino youth. Together, they continue to support initiatives that encourage literacy, creativity, and inclusive learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

One such initiative is the Consulate’s partnership with Bookmark, Inc. to publish Pamilyang Papel, a children’s activity and storytelling material designed to make cultural education more engaging and accessible. The publication promotes reading, creativity, and the formation of values through interactive learning experiences that introduce young readers to culture and heritage.

Building on these efforts, the Consulate, in collaboration with Cebuana Lhuillier and LINKS Philippines, has continued to strengthen the Hooked on Books Program, an initiative aimed at enhancing learning environments and fostering a stronger culture of reading among Filipino students. The latest project under the program is the development of the JHL-RSM Library, the 30th milestone Hooked on Books (HOB) library established through the initiative.

As part of the project, Leonor Petra G. Elepaño met with representatives of the local government and the city administration of Manila, including city administrator Atty. Eduardo Quintos, who expressed support for the initiative and its potential impact on the community.

Currently under construction at Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School, the JHL-RSM Library forms part of the Consulate’s broader commitment to creating more inclusive and supportive spaces for learning. In preparation for its opening, volunteers and partners participated in a three-day community effort that included mural painting activities, library setup, and storytelling sessions for students. These activities reflect the program’s holistic approach to literacy, combining access to books with creative learning experiences that encourage children to develop a lifelong love for reading.

The project has also received support from several private-sector partners. Boysen donated mural paints that helped transform the facility into a vibrant and engaging space for students, while TOSOT served as the project’s air-conditioning sponsor.

Meanwhile, Archispace Design Inc. contributed to the construction and design of the learning space alongside JAS Design and Build Development Corp., led by Sandy Ocampo and Alvin Lu, further highlighting the collaborative effort behind the initiative.

As the project continues to take shape, it reflects San Marino’s enduring commitment to supporting educational programs that expand access to knowledge, encourage cultural appreciation, and help prepare young Filipinos for the opportunities and challenges of the future. Through initiatives such as the JHL-RSM Library, the Consulate continues to demonstrate how partnerships can help create meaningful learning experiences that empower the next generation of Filipino learners.

Bam Aquino fulfills campaign promise with launching of RLE financial assistance for nursing, allied health sciences students

Another campaign promise fulfilled for Senator Bam Aquino as his Related Learning Experience (RLE) financial assistance program was formally launched on Monday by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through the AHEAD (Allied Health Experiential Assistance for Deserving Students) grant.

Aquino helped secure the P500 million allocation in the 2026 national budget to help cover the RLE expenses of nursing and allied health sciences students during his time as chairperson of the Committee on Basic Education.

In a Facebook post, Aquino said 19,000 qualified allied health science students may receive a one-time ₱25,000 RLE subsidy under the AHEAD grant.

“Malaking ginhawa ito para sa ating mga nursing at allied health students na matagal ding nag-alala kung paano mababayaran ang kanilang Related Learning Experience (RLE) at clinical internship fees habang nagsasanay para makapaglingkod sa bayan,” Aquino announced.

During the 2025 senatorial campaign, Aquino vowed during his meetings with nursing students to address their concerns over the high cost of RLE, which is similar to on-the-job training (OJT) and is required for graduation.

“Matagal nating ipinaglaban na mabigyan ng suporta ang ating mga future healthcare professionals, kaya naman napakahalagang hakbang ng paglulunsad ng AHEAD (Allied Health Experiential Assistance for Deserving Students) grant ng CHED upang mas marami pang kabataang Pilipino ang makapagpatuloy sa kanilang pag-aaral at mas mapalapit sa kanilang pangarap na maging healthcare professionals,” he stressed.

Aquino expressed gratitude to CHED, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Shirley Agrupis, for creating this program, swiftly releasing the guidelines, and developing the portal that students can use to apply for the RLE subsidy.

During the launch, 10 nursing students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina (PLMar) held a ceremonial enrollment via the online application portal for the AHEAD grant.

Caritas Manila and the Onocom Group marked a historic milestone in Philippine construction and humanitarian innovation with the groundbreaking ceremony for the country’s first 3D-printed building at the Caritas Manila Headquarters in Paco, Manila last May 20, 2026.

The multi-purpose facility, donated through the collaborative efforts of Onocom Japan, Onocom Philippines, and Providere Onocom, highlights how emerging construction technologies can be utilized to support social development initiatives.

The initiative introduces large-scale 3D concrete printing technology to the Philippines. By using automated systems that build structures layer by layer, the technology offers a more efficient construction process while minimizing material waste and improving precision.

Caritas Manila, the lead social service and development ministry of the Archdiocese of Manila, was chosen as the beneficiary of the project in recognition of its long-standing commitment to serving vulnerable communities through education, disaster response, livelihood programs, and poverty alleviation efforts.

The Onocom Group is recognized for integrating Japanese engineering standards, innovation, and modern construction practices into sustainable and people-centered developments since 1934.

The donated 3D-printed structure is envisioned to serve as a venue for training programs, religious activities, social development initiatives, and disaster response operations.

For Caritas Manila, the partnership reflects its continuing mission to bring hope and opportunities to underserved communities through innovative and sustainable programs.

“We hope that this multipurpose center brings people together to appreciate both charity and innovation,” said Rev. Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, Executive Director of Caritas Manila.

As construction begins on the country’s first 3D-printed building, the project stands as proof that technology can become a powerful instrument for social good.

Sagip CPR Training Empowers Cebuanos with Life-Saving Hands-Only CPR Skill

Cebu City, Philippines — At a time when public health awareness and emergency preparedness are more important than ever, Bell-Kenz Pharma successfully conducted its Sagip CPR Training Program in Cebu, equipping participants with essential Hands-Only CPR skills to respond effectively during life-threatening situations.

Held at Southwestern University PHINMA, Sagip CPR successfully trained 1,500 new “everyday heroes”—students, community members, and frontline workers united by a shared commitment to learn life-saving Hands-Only CPR. The strong turnout underscores a growing awareness that in critical moments, the first responder is often an ordinary person ready to act.

According to Ms. Maita G. Magalong, Vice President for Student Life of SouthWestern University PHINMA, “ the significance of Sagip CPR training lies  in our shared goal of providing a safe environment - one that can only be achieved when we are equipped with the skills to respond effectively during emergencies.”

“We see Cebu as

a key area where community preparedness can truly make an impact,” shared Patrick Larraga, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Head of Bell-Kenz Pharma

Larraga further added,  “Every individual trained represents a stronger chance of survival for someone in need. In critical moments, courage and action matter more than hesitation, and that is exactly what we aim to instill in every participant. With more people trained in Hands-Only CPR, we are building a network of everyday heroes ready to respond in emergencies.”

The Cebu leg in Cebu City is part of a much larger nationwide movement. What began as a simple public service initiative has evolved into a large-scale public health nationwide movement—training thousands of Filipinos and rapidly expanding its footprint nationwide.

Since its inception in August 2025  at PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College, Bell-Kenz Pharma has rolled out Sagip CPR in key areas across the country, including Metro Manila, Northern Luzon,  and Central Luzon,  to Nabua (Camarines Sur), Polangui (Albay),  Naga, to Panay Island including Iloilo City, Roxas City (Capiz), Aklan and Antique; to General Santos City and North Cotabato in Mindanao.

Strengthening its scale and impact, Bell-Kenz Sagip CPR is backed by key partnerships with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and various local government units nationwide—enabling the program to reach transport hubs, public spaces, and grassroots communities more effectively. Through these collaborations, Sagip CPR continues to grow not just in size, but in significance—transforming everyday Filipinos into capable first responders and reinforcing a culture of preparedness across the country.

Sagip CPR of Bell-Kenz Pharma  also supports ongoing efforts by both public and private sectors to enhance safety standards in a region known for its economic activity, educational institutions, and tourism-driven environment.

As Cebu continues to grow as one of the country’s leading urban centers, initiatives like Sagip CPR underscore the importance of not just development—but resilience. By equipping communities with life-saving knowledge today, Bell-Kenz Pharma helps ensure a safer, more responsive Cebu for the future.

Marking its 10th year, the I RESPECT Awards recognize children who practice kindness, empathy, and responsibility in school and community life

During graduation ceremonies nationwide, 83 elementary students received the EastWest Rural Bank I RESPECT Awards and cash incentives in recognition of values-driven leadership

Respect learned early creates a force for good that lasts a lifetime. Guided by this belief, EastWest Rural Bank (EWRB), EastWest Banking Corporation’s rural banking arm, continues its annual I RESPECT Awards campaign—honoring young Filipino students who demonstrate respect for people, the environment, and social, cultural, and spiritual beliefs.

This year, 83 elementary students from regions across the country were recognized during their graduation ceremonies. Each awardee received a cash incentive as part of the recognition.

Now in its 10th year, the I RESPECT Awards celebrate children whose everyday actions reflect empathy, kindness, and responsibility—values observed and affirmed by their teachers. Awardees are recognized not only for academic performance, but also for how they treat others, care for their surroundings, and practice good citizenship in simple, meaningful ways.

Through the campaign, EWRB reinforces its core value of RESPECT and underscores that values-based leadership can begin early. By spotlighting children who choose compassion, inclusion, and integrity, the Bank aims to inspire more young Filipinos to be positive influences in their schools and communities.

The I RESPECT Awards campaign is part of EWRB’s broader advocacy for community development, reinforcing the belief that nation-building starts with character—and that when values are nurtured early, their impact can span generations.

GEMs for Tomorrow: Nurturing Young Minds with Discovery Samal

Discovery Samal has long recognized its people as “Samal GEMs,” a name drawn from the values of being genuine, enthusiastic, and memorable. These GEMs are known for shaping the guest experience, extending their role beyond the resort through community initiatives and engagement programs. With GEMs for Tomorrow, Discovery Samal brings that same spirit into a focused effort that supports young learners and strengthens ties with surrounding communities.

Discovery Samal launched its 2026 GEMs for Tomorrow program on February 28, 2026, through an outreach in Barangay New Carmen, Tugbok District, where the team connected with local children by distributing school supplies, serving meals prepared by its chefs, and initiating a longer-term education-focused effort.

GEMs for Tomorrow forms part of Discovery Samal’s broader CSR direction, centered on building meaningful relationships within grassroots communities through education. The program focuses on underserved sectors, with children as primary beneficiaries, marking a more active step toward sustained engagement with the community.

Reaching the Grassroots

GEMs for Tomorrow is designed as an ongoing campaign that builds on previous outreach initiatives, maintaining a consistent focus on young beneficiaries. The selection of Barangay New Carmen in Tugbok District reflects an intent to work within communities where educational support can be reinforced through both material assistance and structured engagement. The program emphasizes not only resource distribution but the creation of opportunities for learning, making education the central thread across its activities.

The February 28 activity functioned as an initial introduction between the Discovery Samal team and the children. School supplies were distributed during the visit, accompanied by meals prepared by the resort’s chefs, creating an environment that allowed for informal interaction, focusing on establishing familiarity and trust.

Laying the Groundwork for Learning

Future visits under GEMs for Tomorrow will include structured learning sessions facilitated by Discovery Samal team members in coordination with local teachers. These sessions aim to support classroom instruction and contribute to the children’s development over time. The initial outreach serves as a preparatory step, setting the tone for a longer-term engagement that fosters collaboration with the school community.

Beyond the Initiative

GEMs for Tomorrow reflects Discovery Samal’s continuing effort to align its CSR initiatives with education and community-building. The program signals a move toward sustained involvement, in which impact is measured by ongoing presence and deeper community ties. Barangay New Carmen marks the starting point of this engagement, with plans to further develop the initiative in the months ahead.
