Bam Aquino to investigate slow rollout of P67-B classroom construction fund in return as Basic Ed chairperson

Returning as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Senator Bam Aquino outlined key reforms he intends to pursue to help address the country's education crisis, including the 166,000-classroom backlog.

At the same time, Aquino called on the government to fast-track the release of funds for the repair of classrooms in areas devastated by the Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

“Ayon sa DepEd, mahigit 1,000 classrooms ang nasira ng lindol sa Mindanao. Dapat bilisan ang paglalabas ng pondo upang maisaayos ang mga ito sa lalong madaling panahon,” he said.

Aquino said one of his top priorities is scrutinizing the slow rollout of the P67-billion allocation that he helped secure in the 2026 national budget for the construction of 25,000 classrooms.

Despite the substantial allocation under the historic P1.34-trillion education budget, the Senator noted that classroom construction has yet to begin even as the rainy season approaches, raising concerns about possible delays in project implementation.

“Tututukan natin iyong krisis sa edukasyon. Unang-una, iimbestigahan natin ang P67 billion na nakalaan para sa classrooms,” said Aquino, who regained the Basic Education chairmanship following the recent Senate leadership change under acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.

“Alam nating napakabagal ng pag-deploy nito at nais nating malaman kung paano ito papabilisan ngayon na umuulan na ulit at mas mahirap nang gumawa ng classroom,” he added.

Aquino also committed to pushing for the passage of a National Feeding Program that would institutionalize the provision of free and nutritious meals to all kindergarten to Grade 3 students.

“Pangalawa, ipapasa natin iyong reporma sa ating nutrition program kasi mahalaga po na may pagkain ang ating kabataan at dito sa repormang ito, masisigurado natin na Kinder to Grade 3 mayroong masustansiyang pagkain,” said Aquino, who is slated to sponsor the proposed measure expanding the country’s National Feeding Program in July.

The senator also identified other priority reforms, including the passage of the School Safety Act to combat bullying and the School-to-Employment Program to help ensure that K-to-12 graduates can secure jobs after completing their studies.

Aquino expressed optimism that the Senate would unite behind measures that address the country's education challenges.

“Napakarami pa pong kailangang tugunan at sana po magkaisa tayo para tugunan ang mga problemang ito, mabigyan ng tutok natin ang mga problema ng kabataan at ng kinabukasan ng ating bansa,” he said.

At the same time, Aquino reiterated his call for the passage of his Citizen Access and Disclosure of Expenditures for National Accountability (CADENA)-Blockchain the Budget Bill, which seeks to improve transparency and accountability in government spending.

“Marami pa rin pong mga issue sa korapsyon na hindi pa nareresolba at mahalaga na ma-blockchain na iyong budget para alam ng taumbayan kung saan napupunta iyong pera nila. Makakatulong din ito para masigurado na iyong pondo para sa edukasyon, na siyang pinakamataas sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, ay magagamit nang tama,” he pointed out.

Senate Bill No. 1506, which was approved on third and final reading by a 17-0 vote, mandates all government agencies to upload and maintain detailed budget-related documents—including contracts, project costs, bills of materials, and procurement records—on a Digital Budget Platform.
The system is designed to ensure that all files are publicly accessible, tamper-resistant, traceable, open-source, and verifiable, allowing citizens to better monitor how public funds are spent.

Meanwhile, Aquino called on the government to fast-track the release of funds for the repair of classrooms in areas devastated by the Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao, particularly in SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City) and Davao Region.

“Ayon sa DepEd, mahigit 1,000 classrooms ang nasira ng lindol sa Mindanao. Dapat bilisan ang paglalabas ng pondo upang maisaayos ang mga ito sa lalong madaling panahon,” he said.

AYDA Awards 2026 goes global, offering next-gen designers a chance to win the Harvard Prize

Architecture and Interior Design students worldwide are being invited to rethink the future of spaces, communities, and culture as the AYDA Awards officially starts its new season.

Now on its 18th year, the competition formerly known as the Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA) returns with the theme “Converge: Embracing Hyperlocal.” The 2026 theme reflects a growing global shift in design thinking, where the world becomes increasingly interconnected. “Converge” highlights the intersection of cultures, technologies, and ideas, while “Embracing Hyperlocal” underscores the importance of grounding innovation in the unique identity of specific communities.

(L-R): IDr. Brigid Sarmiento, Vice President for Internal Affairs, Council of Interior Design Educators (CIDE); IDr. Ivy Almario, Public Relations Director, Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID) and Interior Design Category Judge; IDr. Mikee Yusay, Head Judge, Interior Design Category; Mr. Chen Lee Siong, General Manager, Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines, Inc.; Ar. Cathy SaldaƱa, Head Judge, Architectural Category; Ar. Jonathan Manalad, National President, United Architects of the Philippines (UAP); and Ar. Jean Cornejo, National President, Philippine Architecture Schools Association (PhilASA).

In rapidly urbanizing contexts such as the Philippines, hyperlocal design takes on heightened relevance. It encourages architects and interior designers to draw from indigenous materials, traditional construction techniques, and cultural narratives that are often overshadowed by modern development. From adaptive reuse of heritage structures in historic Manila districts to community-centered housing solutions in disaster-prone areas, hyperlocal design offers a framework for creating spaces that are both functional and deeply rooted in place.

Rather than treating globalization as a force that standardizes design, AYDA 2026 positions it as an opportunity for convergence — where global ideas are reinterpreted through local lenses. This approach empowers emerging designers to respond more meaningfully to pressing challenges such as climate resilience, urban density, and cultural preservation.

AYDA continues expanding its global design community.

Organized by Nippon Paint, the international design competition encourages Architecture and Interior design students to develop solutions rooted in local identity, cultural heritage, and community-driven innovation — while addressing the evolving needs of a rapidly connected world.

At a time when ideas move globally in seconds, and design trends increasingly overlap across borders, AYDA 2026 is encouraging young creatives to rediscover the value of local wisdom, traditions, and materials.

Participants are challenged to design spaces and experiences that strengthen communities, celebrate heritage, and reimagine how local culture can shape future-ready environments. Since launching in 2008, AYDA has grown into one of Asia’s most recognized design platforms, attracting more than 50,000 entries from over 1,300 tertiary institutions across 20 geographical locations worldwide.

Beyond the competition itself, AYDA has become a major talent development platform for emerging designers through mentorships, workshops, networking sessions, and cross-learning opportunities with leading industry professionals.

The program has also built a strong alumni network of socially conscious designers focused on combining creativity with real-world impact.

For Filipino architecture and design students, the theme resonates strongly with ongoing conversations in the local industry about sustainable urban development and culturally responsive design. With the Philippines facing increasing pressure from rapid city expansion and climate-related risks, the call for hyperlocal innovation highlights the role of young designers in shaping spaces that are not only globally competitive but also deeply responsive to Filipino communities and environments.

“Design today is no longer just about creating beautiful spaces. Young designers are being challenged to solve real problems, strengthen communities, and create environments that people can genuinely connect with,” said Chen Lee Siong, General Manager of Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines, Inc.

“With AYDA 2026, we want to encourage students to embrace local identity and culture while thinking boldly about the future. Some of the most powerful design ideas come from understanding the communities around us,” he added.

Harvard Prize for international winners

One of the biggest highlights of AYDA Awards 2026 is the highly coveted “Harvard Prize,” awarded to the International Gold Winners named as the AYDA Designer of the Year for both the Architecture and Interior Design categories.

The prize includes a fully sponsored three-week Design Discovery Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in the United States. Valued at up to USD 10,000, the immersive learning experience covers tuition fees, airfare, accommodation, and visa support, giving winners direct exposure to one of the world’s leading design institutions.

The Harvard Prize serves as AYDA’s flagship international opportunity, allowing young designers to deepen their design thinking, collaborate with global peers, and gain first-hand insights into advanced spatial design practices.

Cash awards, internships, and global exposure

Apart from the Harvard Prize, AYDA Awards 2026 will also recognize outstanding student work through multiple awards and opportunities.

Gold and Silver awardees will receive cash prizes and internship opportunities, while Honorary Mention winners and special category recipients will also receive monetary rewards.

Additional recognitions include:

  • Nippon Paint Colour Award
  • Best Sustainable Design
  • Best Design Impact

Each special award comes with a USD 1,000 cash prize. Mentors of winning students will also gain access to the Design Discovery Virtual (DDV) Program conducted by Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

In the Philippines, AYDA offers prestigious prizes that recognize outstanding Architecture and Interior Design students. Gold Award winners in each category receive a cash prize of ₱50,000. Beyond the monetary rewards, AYDA serves as a gateway to international exposure, mentorship, networking opportunities, and the chance to represent the Philippines at the AYDA International Awards, making it one of the most sought-after design competitions for young Filipino design students.

Silver Award winners receive ₱30,000 in cash, while eight finalists are awarded ₱10,000 each for their exceptional entries. Special recognitions such as Best Colour Choice and Best Green Innovation also come with cash prizes of ₱10,000.

Entries for the AYDA Awards Philippines will officially open in June

Nippon Paint is encouraging eligible architecture and interior design students worldwide to participate and become part of AYDA’s growing global design community.

San Marino Consulate Expands Education Efforts Through Partnerships for Filipino Youth

As education continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world, meaningful partnerships have become increasingly important in expanding learning opportunities for students beyond the classroom. Through collaborations with local organizations, schools, and community groups, the Consulate General of the Republic of San Marino in the Philippines continues to strengthen programs that help young Filipinos grow academically, culturally, and socially.

By working closely with educational institutions and community stakeholders, the Consulate has expanded initiatives that promote lifelong learning and expose students to broader cultural and global perspectives. These efforts reflect the growing understanding that education today extends beyond textbooks and traditional instruction—it also involves nurturing creativity, cultural awareness, and a deeper appreciation of the world.

According to Consul General Jean Henri Lhuillier, education must equip young people with the skills and mindset needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected future.

“Education today must prepare students not only to read and write, but also to understand the world around them, appreciate culture, and adapt to the future. Young learners need opportunities that encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong desire to learn,” said Lhuillier.

This vision has guided several educational and cultural initiatives supported by the Consulate over the years. Beyond promoting literacy, these programs seek to create enriching learning experiences that help students become globally aware while remaining grounded in their communities and cultural identity.

Among the Consulate’s longstanding collaborators is Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. (CLFI), whose partnership has further strengthened efforts to make educational and community-based programs more accessible to Filipino youth. Together, they continue to support initiatives that encourage literacy, creativity, and inclusive learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

One such initiative is the Consulate’s partnership with Bookmark, Inc. to publish Pamilyang Papel, a children’s activity and storytelling material designed to make cultural education more engaging and accessible. The publication promotes reading, creativity, and the formation of values through interactive learning experiences that introduce young readers to culture and heritage.

Building on these efforts, the Consulate, in collaboration with Cebuana Lhuillier and LINKS Philippines, has continued to strengthen the Hooked on Books Program, an initiative aimed at enhancing learning environments and fostering a stronger culture of reading among Filipino students. The latest project under the program is the development of the JHL-RSM Library, the 30th milestone Hooked on Books (HOB) library established through the initiative.

As part of the project, Leonor Petra G. ElepaƱo met with representatives of the local government and the city administration of Manila, including city administrator Atty. Eduardo Quintos, who expressed support for the initiative and its potential impact on the community.

Currently under construction at Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School, the JHL-RSM Library forms part of the Consulate’s broader commitment to creating more inclusive and supportive spaces for learning. In preparation for its opening, volunteers and partners participated in a three-day community effort that included mural painting activities, library setup, and storytelling sessions for students. These activities reflect the program’s holistic approach to literacy, combining access to books with creative learning experiences that encourage children to develop a lifelong love for reading.

The project has also received support from several private-sector partners. Boysen donated mural paints that helped transform the facility into a vibrant and engaging space for students, while TOSOT served as the project’s air-conditioning sponsor.

Meanwhile, Archispace Design Inc. contributed to the construction and design of the learning space alongside JAS Design and Build Development Corp., led by Sandy Ocampo and Alvin Lu, further highlighting the collaborative effort behind the initiative.

As the project continues to take shape, it reflects San Marino’s enduring commitment to supporting educational programs that expand access to knowledge, encourage cultural appreciation, and help prepare young Filipinos for the opportunities and challenges of the future. Through initiatives such as the JHL-RSM Library, the Consulate continues to demonstrate how partnerships can help create meaningful learning experiences that empower the next generation of Filipino learners.

Bam Aquino fulfills campaign promise with launching of RLE financial assistance for nursing, allied health sciences students

Another campaign promise fulfilled for Senator Bam Aquino as his Related Learning Experience (RLE) financial assistance program was formally launched on Monday by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through the AHEAD (Allied Health Experiential Assistance for Deserving Students) grant.

Aquino helped secure the P500 million allocation in the 2026 national budget to help cover the RLE expenses of nursing and allied health sciences students during his time as chairperson of the Committee on Basic Education.

In a Facebook post, Aquino said 19,000 qualified allied health science students may receive a one-time ₱25,000 RLE subsidy under the AHEAD grant.

“Malaking ginhawa ito para sa ating mga nursing at allied health students na matagal ding nag-alala kung paano mababayaran ang kanilang Related Learning Experience (RLE) at clinical internship fees habang nagsasanay para makapaglingkod sa bayan,” Aquino announced.

During the 2025 senatorial campaign, Aquino vowed during his meetings with nursing students to address their concerns over the high cost of RLE, which is similar to on-the-job training (OJT) and is required for graduation.

“Matagal nating ipinaglaban na mabigyan ng suporta ang ating mga future healthcare professionals, kaya naman napakahalagang hakbang ng paglulunsad ng AHEAD (Allied Health Experiential Assistance for Deserving Students) grant ng CHED upang mas marami pang kabataang Pilipino ang makapagpatuloy sa kanilang pag-aaral at mas mapalapit sa kanilang pangarap na maging healthcare professionals,” he stressed.

Aquino expressed gratitude to CHED, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Shirley Agrupis, for creating this program, swiftly releasing the guidelines, and developing the portal that students can use to apply for the RLE subsidy.

During the launch, 10 nursing students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina (PLMar) held a ceremonial enrollment via the online application portal for the AHEAD grant.

Vena Energy Turns Over 1,000 “Seats for Sustainability” to Talim Island Schools, Improving the Learning Environment for Students While Creating Livelihood for Locals

Vena Energy, a leading green energy solutions company in the Asia-Pacific region, has successfully turned over 1,000 handcrafted armchairs to elementary schools in the municipalities of Binangonan and Cardona on Talim Island.

The initiative, titled, “Seats for Sustainability,” was led by Vena Energy’s subsidiary, Island Wind Energy Corp. (IWEC). It marks a significant milestone in the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, delivering a dual impact: improving the learning environment for thousands of students while providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for the island’s residents.

Empowering Education in Remote Communities

The turnover ceremonies were held on 22 January 2026 at Kasile Covered Court (Binangonan) and 23 January 2026 at Lambac Covered Court (Cardona). The donation benefits multiple schools, including Kasile Elementary School, Bombong Elementary School, Kinagatan Elementary School, and Lambac Elementary School.

For remote areas like Talim Island, logistical challenges often hinder the delivery of school facilities. This donation addresses a critical infrastructure gap, ensuring that students have access to comfortable, DepEd-standard furniture that fosters a better learning environment.

From Skills to Livelihood

What sets the “Seats for Sustainability” project apart is its commitment to the local circular economy. Rather than sourcing furniture from external suppliers, Vena Energy partnered with local communities to manufacture the chairs.

Residents were trained by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in carpentry and craftsmanship. Following their training, these local community members were hired by Vena Energy to build the 1,000 chairs. This not only ensured the furniture met quality standards but also injected income directly into local households, turning a charitable donation into a driver for economic empowerment.

A Commitment to Host Communities

“Seats for Sustainability” aligns with Vena Energy’s broader CSR strategy, which prioritizes Education, Infrastructure Development, and Community Well-being. By engaging the community in the solution, the company reinforces its core value of enabling sustainable social and economic development within its host communities.

“We believe that empowering a community means giving them the necessary tools to build their own future,” said Samrinder Nehria, Head of The Philippines at Vena Energy. “This project is special because the fathers and neighbors of these students built the very chairs their children will sit on. It is a story of pride, resilience, and sustainability.”

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from IWEC, local government officials from Binangonan and Cardona, school officials, and residents of Talim Island.

Addressing the brain drain: SM group brings higher education to the region

Home to more than 84,000 students, National University’s (NU) presence in seven cities outside of Metro Manila has not only expanded access to higher quality education but also access to professional opportunities.
NU Cebu

These seven provincial areas include NU Bacolod, the university’s first campus in the Visayas, which has 96% local employees and the remaining are from other campuses who moved to Bacolod. NU Laguna has 99% local employees; NU Baliwag has 98% local employees; NU Dasmarinas has 96% with 4% transferees; NU Lipa has 98% local employees, and NU Clark has 97% local employees. NU Cebu, which opened this academic year, has 100% local hires.

NU’s presence especially in the provinces allows professors and students to access quality education and employment without leaving their hometown. The university’s standardized compensation package across its campuses attracts talent while helping address brain drain in the provinces.

“We bring talent back to the provinces. NU offers a standardized salary matrix applicable to all our employees across the country. This approach has helped NU make our recruitment more appealing to applicants in provincial regions,” NU President and CEO Dr. Renato Carlos Ermita said.

NU President and CEO Dr. Renato Carlos Ermita

Strengthening local ecosystems for work and enterprise by aligning education, labor, and development policies is necessary in combating the deepening inequality between urban and rural areas. SM’s expanding social footprint, in which most NU campuses are located, helps local communities retain their education talent, reinforcing access and contribution to the social economy. This underscores SM’s vision of responsible development of its host communities.

“NU is part of SM’s corporate social responsibility. By allowing the campus to be a part of the SM community, accessibility is achieved and affordability is maintained. Transportation hubs are also located near most of the mall-based campuses, allowing safety and convenience for the students and employees,” Dr. Ermita further shared.

Back home

In NU Cebu, one of Cebu’s returning locals is the campus’ Executive Director Johanna Minglana who shared, “We have all local hires, with three of us returnees from NU Manila where we were based when NU Cebu was not yet opened. NU Cebu gave me the opportunity to come full circle in my birthplace after decades of growing up in Manila while continuing my academic career.”

She shared how her sentiment also resonates with the faculty and employees, “they shared how working at NU Cebu has allowed them to pursue meaningful careers without having to leave their families or communities. They speak of a better sense of purpose—being able to contribute to nation-building through education while remaining rooted in the culture and values of their hometown. Our stories are not isolated—they reflect a broader impact of NU Cebu’s commitment to regional development and talent retention.”

The Cebu campus, according to Executive Director Minglana, is a testament to how NU embodies SM’s vision of being a catalyst for community development. “Having been in the NU system since 2012, I’ve seen how our goals align with SM’s broader purpose. What keeps me here is the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students and to contribute meaningfully to the development of my hometown. It’s a privilege to be part of a transformative journey that uplifts not just individuals, but entire communities.”

For Executive Director Minglana, NU Cebu’s presence in a local community like Cebu goes beyond education. “It stimulates the local economy by creating jobs—not only within the university but also in surrounding businesses such as food establishments, boarding houses, transportation services, and retail. Our students, faculty, and employees contribute to the vibrancy of the local economy through their daily needs and activities in a fun, safe, and secure place.

As the university celebrated its 125th founding anniversary, its quasquicentennial year, recently at the SM MOA Sky, thousands of NU alumni attended the event. This, as NU aims to continue providing its students, eventually graduates, with world class and life-ready education to enable them to be competitive in whatever arena they are in, provincial or otherwise.

PHINMA Education partnered with Lenovo to consolidate all its devices across its institutions into a unified ecosystem

Only one out of every four Filipino students who enter first grade will complete a tertiary degree — a harsh reality for many youths who lack the financial means to pursue higher education. PHINMA Education, a private educational organization, is working to change this by offering educational courses from college to university level at subsidized rates through its twelve educational institutions in the Philippines and Indonesia. To date, PHINMA Education has helped over 144,000 students and offers more than 110 programs across its network of schools. Many students enrolled in these institutions are the first in their families to achieve a tertiary education, whether that be a degree or a diploma.

Aiming to streamline its IT infrastructure, PHINMA Education partnered with Lenovo to consolidate all its devices across its institutions into a unified ecosystem. This collaboration equips staff with advanced devices and software, creating engaging and effective learning environments through personalized learning and access to digital content.

Simplifying Management

A key challenge PHINMA Education faced was the use of multiple technology brands for its endpoint computing devices. This made IT management complicated, resulting in inconsistent and incompatible support across campuses. To streamline operations, PHINMA Education sought to consolidate its technology with a single partner to facilitate quicker decision-making, reduce operational costs, and simplify data migration to the cloud.

Laying the Bedrock for Educational Initiatives

Focused on equipping graduates with essential skills to thrive in the workforce, PHINMA Education implemented the Lenovo EdVision program. With this program, teachers can effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices and create curricula that leverage digital tools for enhanced learning. Together with Lenovo’s Device as a Service (DaaS) offering, it supports PHINMA Education in optimizing resource allocation and minimizing downtime.

With Lenovo managing its IT infrastructure, PHINMA Education can focus on enhancing its educational delivery, providing top-notch education to its students using the latest technologies and advanced teaching methods.

Bringing This Partnership Further

In just two years, PHINMA Education acquired about 2,000 devices, with plans for an additional 1,000 by 2025. Future developments include integrating Lenovo’s TruScale Device as a Service and Managed Services for a consistent, reliable supply of quality devices and always-on IT support to better support PHINMA’s education mission.

With support from Lenovo, PHINMA Education will continue empowering youths from low-income families to break the cycle of poverty as it expands its reach throughout Southeast Asia.

DepEd and Chalkboard Launch the ARAL Program: A New Initiative to Boost Literacy and Numeracy in Public Schools

In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has entered into a formal partnership with Chalkboard, a leading provider of tutoring services, to launch the Academic Remediation, Acceleration, and Livelihood (ARAL) Program. This program seeks to address the pressing challenges in literacy and numeracy faced by Filipino students, particularly in public schools.

The Department of Education taps Chalkboard’s community-based ARAL Program to help enhance literacy and numeracy skills among public school children. At the MOA signing ceremony were (L-R): Georgina Yang, DepEd Assistant Secretary; Sharon Santiago, Chalkboard Marketing Director; Leandro AƱonuevo, Chalkboard Director of Business Development and Partnerships; Sonny Angara, DepEd Secretary; Kristine Brown, Chalkboard Chief Executive Officer; and Albert Tablan, Chalkboard Chief Operating Officer.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on October 14 at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and Chalkboard CEO Kristine E. Brown. This partnership brings together the strengths of both the public and private sectors to promote improved educational outcomes for K-10 learners.

A Collaborative Effort for Quality Education

The ARAL Program embodies a synergistic collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard, leveraging their combined expertise to ensure accessible, high-quality education for all Filipino learners. This partnership aligns with the government’s mandate to provide accessible, quality education as outlined in Republic Act 8525, otherwise known as the “Adopt-A-School Act of 1998,” which encourages private sector involvement in improving public education.

During the signing ceremony, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving the department’s goals. “DepEd is committed to ensuring that quality education is accessible to all Filipino learners, and this partnership with Chalkboard is a significant step toward that goal. By working together with the private sector, we can improve the academic performance and overall well-being of our students,” he noted.

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Curriculum Powered by Advanced Technology

At the heart of the ARAL Program lies Chalkboard’s evidence-based curriculum, meticulously designed to ensure effective learning outcomes. This curriculum is grounded in the latest educational research and best practices, ensuring that each component is proven to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. A key feature of this curriculum is its integration of advanced technology to process data and inform the progress of each student.

ARAL Program Structure and Implementation

The ARAL Program employs a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to address learning deficits exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by Chalkboard, the program offers up to 25 days of targeted tutoring over six weeks, delivered through both in-person and digital platforms. This high-frequency, intensive approach is supported by research demonstrating substantial improvements in literacy and numeracy skills.

The program includes several key components:
• Personalized Learning: The tutoring sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that every learner receives the appropriate support.

• Nutritional Support: Recognizing the connection between nutrition and learning, the ARAL Program will provide nutritious snacks or meals during each tutoring session to support students’ well-being.

• Community Upskilling and Engagement: The program involves local community members as paid tutors, creating economic opportunities while fostering a supportive educational environment.

• Holistic Development: In addition to academic support, the ARAL Program aims to develop students’ socio-emotional skills, preparing them for success both in and outside of the classroom.
Chalkboard has designed the program to be scalable and sustainable, ensuring it can be replicated in different regions and communities across the Philippines. “We believe that education is the key to unlocking the full potential of every child,” said Kristine E. Brown, CEO of Chalkboard. “The ARAL Program is our contribution to improving the educational landscape of the Philippines, particularly in addressing the learning gaps that have been exacerbated by recent challenges such as the pandemic.”

Target Beneficiaries and Community Impact

The primary beneficiaries of the ARAL Program are K-10 students in public schools, particularly those struggling with literacy and numeracy. The program’s implementation will begin with pilot schools, and its success will be measured through Chalkboard’s assessment system, supplemented by DepEd’s assessment tools.

The program not only benefits students but also the wider community. Local community members will be engaged as paid tutors or food vendors, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities while contributing to the educational success of the students.

DepEd will coordinate closely with Chalkboard to select target areas and ensure smooth program implementation. Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted throughout the program’s two-year duration to ensure that it delivers tangible and verifiable results.

A Model for Future Educational Partnerships

The ARAL Program will be funded through partnerships with private sponsors, local government units, and other supporting entities. With the support of these stakeholders, the program aims to create a lasting positive impact on the academic performance and socio-emotional development of Filipino students.

This collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard is seen as a model for future public-private partnerships in education. Both parties are optimistic that the ARAL Program will not only help bridge current learning gaps but also lay the foundation for long-term educational improvements in the country.

Chevron Renews Partnership with Edukasyon.ph to Offer Training and Employment Support for Scholars in Cloud Computing through AWS re/Start program

Chevron Philippines Inc (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuel and lubricants, has signed a partnership once again with Edukasyon.ph to offer cloud computing training and employment support for disadvantaged individuals through the AWS re/Start program.

The collaboration between Chevron and Edukasyon.ph underscored their shared commitment to the educational development of underserved individuals.

Forty-eight scholars graduated from the last batch of Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start program in the high-growth field of cloud computing. These scholars completed the program with distinction and acquired valuable technical skills in designing, managing, and optimizing cloud infrastructures, which are increasingly in demand. For the second batch, Edukasyon.ph aims to enroll 50 students in the program supported by Chevron Philippines.

Cloud computing has become a vital component for businesses of all sizes, leading to increased demand in the tech industry. Enhancing the skills of professionals in this field is essential to ensure that Filipinos, both in the Philippines and around the world, develop the specialized knowledge and expertise required.

AWS re/Start is a cohort-based workforce development training program designed to prepare individuals for careers in the cloud and connect them with potential employers. No prior technology experience is required to apply. The program is free for participants and specifically aims to assist unemployed or underemployed individuals in launching new careers

With guidance from professional mentors and accredited instructors, participants gain a strong foundation in cloud computing that prepares them for entry-level cloud jobs. The training covers essential programming, networking, security, and relational database skills through real-world scenarios, hands-on labs, and coursework. Graduates from collaborating organization possess not only technical skills but also professional competencies, and they have earned an AWS Certification, a recognized credential that validates their cloud computing expertise.

“We are very grateful to Chevron Philippines for their continued support. Programs like this are quite costly, and their external support allows us to develop additional cohorts, enabling more students to participate and benefit from upskilling opportunities. We are also thrilled to have the opportunity to renew our partnership with Chevron,” said Sophia Fontanilla, Board member of Edukasyon.ph
