Remembering Ninoy

Malacañang has declared today, Wednesday a holiday as the nation commemorates the 30th death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. August 21 or “Ninoy Aquino Day” is a special non-working day.
This marks Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr.’s return to the Philippines and his martyrdom and sacrifice. He was a Filipino Senator and a former Governor of Tarlac. Together with Gerry Roxas and Jovito Salonga, Ninoy formed the leadership of the opposition to the government of President Ferdinand Marcos. Shortly after the imposition of Martial Law, he was arrested in 1973 along with other dissidents and incarcerated for seven years. Aquino was permitted to travel to the United States for medical treatment following a heart attack. He was assassinated at the Manila International Airport in 1983 upon returning from his self-imposed exile. His death catapulted his widow, Corazon Aquino, into the political limelight, and prompted her to run for President as member of the UNIDO party in the 1986 snap elections.

Among other public structures, Manila International Airport has since been renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honour, and the anniversary of his death is a national holiday.
The Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) is spearheading an online commemoration which will feature an interactive page with a comprehensive timeline, music of the era, infographic maps, essays, and testimonials on Ninoy and his sacrifice, on the Presidential Museum and Library.
“This campaign seeks to keep the spirit of Ninoy’s martyrdom alive as an example of the selfless sacrifice of a man who gave up his life to free a shackled country. Join the commemoration by posting on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #Ninoy or by sending an email to heritage@pcdspo.gov.ph.

The nation once again marks Ninoy’s sacrifice, and your recollections and opinions will play a vital role in enabling a new generation of Filipinos to understand the period of martial law, and the turning point that was August 21, 1983.”

LORENZO, a musical, places the first Filipino saint alongside the OFW in exile

Featuring music by Ryan Cayabyab, direction by Nonon Padilla and book and lyrics by Juan Ekis and Paul Dumol with the collaboration of Joem Antonio
Lorenzo Ruiz (Lorenz Martinez)
This September, Christopher de Leon through Green Wings Entertainment Network, Inc. presents a new musical directed by Nonon Padilla: LORENZO, which features the musical stylings of Ryan Cayabyab and libretto by award-winning writers Juan Ekis, Paul Dumol, and Joem Antonio. The musical, which tells the story of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz’s escape to Japan and subsequent martyrdom there, is framed within a play that tells the modern-day story of Laurence, an OFW whose imprisonment in a Middle Eastern country and imminent execution prompt him to reflect upon the struggles of his historical countryman and cope with the inner struggles of his own predicament. Lorenz Martinez and OJ Mariano star in these roles respectively.

LORENZO is deeply relevant to Filipinos from all walks of life as its themes span the unquenchable rage of the suffering man to the cathartic acceptance of one’s circumstances, the struggles of our ancestors to our struggles in the ever-changing contemporary world, being apart from one’s home to inspiring others with one’s sense of being a Filipino in a foreign land. And in line with the declaration of 2013 as the Year of Faith, LORENZO especially touches upon the theme of faith as a heroic virtue and how faith moves one to make the most powerful albeit difficult choices.
Lorenzo Ruiz and his wife, Rosario
The Missionaries

LORENZO will be staged at the SDA Theatre, located on the fifth floor of De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde on P. Ocampo Street, Malate. It will run on September 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14 with shows at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Tickets may be reserved through the LORENZO official website:www.lorenzorocks.com.

WD® Founds New Storage Association to Promote the Critical Role of Magnetic Storage Technologies

WD®, a Western Digital® (NASDAQ: WDC) company, announced that it has founded the Storage Products Association (SPA) with other hard drive companies to promote the merits and value of rotating magnetic storage technologies, as well as to make consumers and professionals aware of how critical hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs) are to their digital lives.

SPA members include HGST, Seagate, Toshiba and WD. The organization helps storage manufacturers and users understand and support current and future storage needs, including the key role of hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state hybrid drives, in an effective storage mix for all consumer and business environments. SPA will provide education to its customers, partners, members and users of HDDs and SSHDs. SPA will also participate in industry and user events, and will publish materials about end users’ storage needs and effective usage of a mix of storage technologies.

“Driven by continued, rapid expansion of digital content production, demand for storage is expected to grow in the mid-30s percent range annually through 2020,” said Tim Leyden, WD president. ”While, in that timeframe, a mix of technologies will be deployed to appropriately serve customers, about 75 percent of the capacity is still expected to be rotating magnetic storage devices. Every user of smart phones, tablets and personal computers today depends on the value and reliability of HDDs or SSHDs to secure their precious data, whether the storage is in their device or in the cloud. SPA will help consumers and businesses appreciate the value of their growing content storage needs and the remarkable rotating magnetic technologies that save and protect that content.”

SPA is making its debut at the Flash Memory Summit, beginning today at the Santa Clara Convention Center. At 8:30 a.m. today, SPA member companies will participate in a panel titled, “Solid State Hybrid Drives Help Meet Today’s Storage Requirements” to discuss the role of hard disk drives and solid state hybrid drives. John Rydning, IDC research vice president for hard disk drives, will moderate the panel.

For more information and SPA, go to www.storage-products-association.org
