Limited Seats Added for LAUD in Manila

Fast-rising synth-pop artist and producer Lauv, who recently sold out the Manila leg of his 2019 Asia Tour, has officially announced that due to insistent public demand, a new Upper Box section with limited seats will be added to his much anticipated live concert on May 20 at the Smart Araneta ColiseuColiseum.

This will be Lauv’s third and biggest show in the Philippines to date, following a mall tour series back in 2017 and a music festival performance in 2018.

Produced by AEG Presents and Ovation Productions, general on-sale of the newly opened Upper Box section starts March 25, while few more tickets to the previously announced Cebu show on May 20 at Waterfront Hotel Cebu City are still available.

In January, Lauv surprised fans with the release of brand new single “i’m so tired” with Troye Sivan. The instant hit has now over 115 million streams on Spotify, soared up the Billboard Hot 100 Chart within a week of its release, and quickly rose to Top 13 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Lauv’s first ever Top 15 single in the United Kingdom. Other top recent Lauv collaborations include Julia Michaels for “There’s No Way,” DJ Snake for “A Different Way,” and Travis Mills for “Question.”

This past summer, Lauv performed his breakthrough hit, “I Like Me Better,” on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as the 2018 Teen Choice Awards and 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. The single reached the Top 10 of Top 40 US radio, and top 10 airplay hits around the globe including Australia, Germany, New Zealand & more. A major highlight of 2018 was the launch of his compilation album, “I met you when I was 18.” Since its release, “I Like Me Better” has gained more than 653 million Spotify streams and skyrocketed to be a certified six times platinum single globally. The song has spent a total of 13 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists Chart, and it has gone double platinum in the US, triple platinum in Australia, and platinum in other multiple markets. Lauv has now surpassed well over 2 billion cumulative streams worldwide as he continues to write and produce polished, power pop.

The 2019 Asia Tour even gets better as 4-time Juno Awards 2019 nominee and pop iconoclast bülow joins Lauv as special guest on his two major shows in the Philippines. The German-born singer just released her new track “Sweet Little Lies” via Republic Records, Wax Records, and Universal Music Canada. bülow has previously released Damaged Vol. 1 and Damaged Vol. 2 - each instantly resonated with critics and new fans alike. Damaged Vol. 1 included “Like This Guy,” “Lines,” and fan favorite “Not A Love Song,” which to date has clocked over 83 million streams.

Lauv’s 2019 Asia Tour live in Manila and Cebu is presented AEG Presents and Ovation Productions. Ticket price for the new section at the Smart Araneta Coliseum is P1,590 and will go on sale March 25, 2019 10am via www.ticketnet.com.ph and TicketNet outlets. Gift Ideas for Young Adults: 6 Things to Kickstart the Independent Life

#Adulting may be intimidating, especially for young adults. After spending so much time in the comfort of being at home with mom and dad around, it may seem daunting to be separated from them and actually having to start living alone.

The fresh grads and young adults in our lives need all the guidance and support that they can get. One of thoughtful things that parents can do for them is to gift
them with essential items that they can utilize well.

Here are six items that every yuppie needs when they start an independent life:

1. Gift certificates. A set of gift certificates is a good idea for anyone who’s starting their career and is looking to expand their wardrobe to include office-appropriate clothes. This is a better idea than just gifting clothes so one can
pick the style, color, and size he or she wants.

2. An investment account. Adulthood means investing in the future. Trusted companies grow their customers’ assets while offering other benefits like health and life insurance.

Investments can be tricky, so why not help them open an investment account and make the initial deposit for them? They can then build on it as soon as he or she starts having a regular salary.

3. Storage containers and organizers. Having one’s own place to live in means taking on bigger responsibilities like cleaning the entire home. Investing on storage containers and organizers will help one keep his or her things in order at all times. It will also help save time from having to look around the home for that thing that is needed

4. A good air conditioner. Those moving out and getting their own place will need an air conditioner to survive the Philippine heat and humidity. A good choice is the Samsung Wind-Free Air Conditioner, which maintains the preferred temperature by gently dispersing cool air without direct wind.

5. A multi-tasking oven. Another must have for the future condo-dweller is a smart oven that will make cooking more convenient. The Samsung Smart Oven’s 15 cook with ease presets makes kitchen-time easier for those on-the-go. It also works as a grill, steamer, fryer, oven, microwave, and yogurt maker so one doesn’t have to eat the same thing over and over. Despite its compact size, the Smart Oven is a multi-tasking appliance that maximizes the space in one’s condo or apartment.

6. A reliable washer-dryer. Bringing a load of dirty clothes to the laundromat can be a tedious chore that might lead to lost or damaged clothes. Make their lives easier and ensure that they look presentable with clean clothes by gifting them with a Samsung Combo Washer & Dryer.

Anyone can slay #adulting when equipped with the proper resources. Samsung Digital Appliances are the ultimate partner in life for those about to embark on a new adventure since they are built to solve real-life challenges and deliver meaningful innovations.

Help restore our primary rainforests with your Globe Rewards points

Name your tree when you donate your points by March 31, 2019

All Globe Prepaid, Postpaid, and TM customers have a chance to help restore the Philippines’ primary rainforest cover when they donate their Rewards points to Hineleban Foundation by March 31, 2019.

Hineleban (He-ne-leu-ban) is a Sacred Binukid term literally meaning “Mother Tree of the rainforest that sustains the cycle of all life”. Hineleban Foundation is a non-stock, non-profit organisation based in Bukidnon, Mindanao. Their vision is to ensure the nation’s water, food and human security by reforesting the mountain ranges of Mindanao, home to the country’s last watersheds. These ranges are inhabited by Indigenous People (IP’s) and Bangsamoro communities. Hineleban Foundation together with Globe, have partnered in this enormous task by entering into a Sacred Customary Compact with the IP’s and a Peace and Development role with the Bangsamoro People, agreeing to join efforts by identifying steps to fulfil this dream.

“We continue our commitment to environmental sustainability and want to make it easier for our customers and stakeholders to integrate it into their lives. We encourage everyone to spread the word to their families and friends so that more aid could be provided to our country’s primary rainforests. We believe that through small, simple ways, anyone can contribute in preserving and protecting the environment including our rainforests,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

Be part of the rainforestation advocacy by easily donating your Globe Rewards points. Every 100 Rewards points donation is equivalent to one tree. To donate, just download the Globe Rewards app on your mobile device and click the “DONATE” banner. Tap “HELP100” and press “REDEEM”. Upon receiving the confirmation message, tap on the Hineleban site to name your tree. Enter your name, email, mobile number, and tree name, then wait for a confirmation prompt that you have successfully named your tree.

Globe and Hineleban Foundation’s partnership began in December 2016, whose combined efforts are currently reforesting 300 hectares of denuded primary rainforests, a fraction of the 44,000 hectares surveyed and targeted by Hineleban Foundation in Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur. The program born from the Globe-Hineleban partnership is structured into five phases over a 5-year period, lasting until December 2021.

The reforestation process begins with the planting of calliandra to quell acidic cogonal grass. This is followed by the planting of tree species that are ideal for agroforestry, including brazilian fire trees and Caribbean pine trees. Intercropping then becomes the objective, with 600 indigenous tree species per hectare planted to secure the area as a permanent watershed. Some of the species grown are almon, bagtikan, mayapis, apitong, red lauan, palosapis, white lauan, olayan, katii and nato. Hineleban Foundation’s reforestation methodology is internationally recognized, having received the Grand Prize Award for best project in the forestry sector, from the Agricultural Research Centre for International Development and the French Development Agency in 2015.

Aside from its partnership with Hineleban Foundation, Globe also pursues other environmental sustainability advocacies as part of its responsible corporate citizenship. In 2015, Globe launched its paperless billing campaign to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of Life on Land–centered on protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss. Today, Globe customers now have an option to simply receive their monthly billings via email. In 2018, it also spearheaded 2 Marine Biodiversity Conservation Workshops for Sustainable Business Practices in Boracay Island and Siargao. This is in partnership with Save Philippine Seas.

A lifetime of warm memories: creating dishes in the kitchen of Ann Puno

Behind every great cook is a lifetime of fond memories of food and the people it was shared with. Ann Puno, the dessert genius behind Ann Puno’s Kitchen, is no exception.

At 59, Mrs. Puno is a formidable woman: she’s a multi-awarded baker, a successful entrepreneur,  a loving wife, a doting mother, and a cancer survivor.

Her journey from kid in the kitchen at her mother’s elbow to a matriarch and business woman running her own enterprise is a joy to follow; a rare feel-good tale of how one woman listened to her instincts and created a path of her own, lit by moments of love with friends and family.

How it all began

Like many Filipino children, Ann remembers watching her mother and grandmother prepare their meals, busily tending to several pots and pans on top of their trusty La Germania gas range in a well-lit kitchen. “I lived in the province where there were no bakeshops,” Ann says, “but I remember that every birthday, my mother would make us birthday cakes from scratch. Sometimes, she would even make donuts from scratch.”

Later, as a newlywed armed with the same La Germania oven she had watched her mother make her birthday cakes with, she kept baking. She created flavors that won over the Filipino palate, and her cakes grew in popularity. The rest, as they say, is history.

A language of love

Through the years, Ann has constantly improved upon her craft. With her trusty La Germania oven ever by her side, she has founded her business and created a complete system to keep her family well-fed and feeling well-loved.

As her children grew up, they learned to recognize the signs of her love. “They know that [making their favorite dishes] is a way that I offer them lambing, and comfort,” she says. Like her mom, she made birthday cakes for each of her children’s birthdays. When the kids came home, there were always snacks ready for them (and often, their friends). Even when they had grown up and their schedules became less predictable, they knew that their mom always had something waiting for them. “They know that when they come home, there is something good to eat. This is my act of service, this is how I show love,” she says.

Protecting her legacy

As her family grows and changes, her business expands, and her personal journey continues to take her in more directions, Mrs. Puno is dedicated to preserving all the memories that they shared through the years. She keeps records of the dishes she created in several notebooks filled with handwritten notes, some photos, and even mementoes. There’s a collection of books and scrapbooks filled to the brim and that she’s constantly adding to. This will be her legacy to her grandchildren, and for the people her family chooses to bring into their fold.

That, and maybe one of her ovens. She has one heavy duty La Germania oven that she only uses during peak seasons. On the off seasons, it gets thoroughly cleaned, packed up, and carefully stored in a shed behind the house. Knowing how sturdy these ovens are—Ann’s mother’s original oven is still in service after all these years—there’s a good chance her grandkids will still be able to bake in one of hers.

She has always told her children about the value of money and advises them that when you buy something, it should always be of value. Her La Germania oven is a great example. Being one of the most trusted brands in the market, these ovens are made for heavy-duty use, and with the proper care, can go for years without having to be maintained or repaired. That’s great value for money!

It’s the only brand Ann has ever used in her kitchen, and with good reason. Each oven has taken the demands of a growing family and a thriving bakery business in stride. So far, none of them have needed to be replaced, only repaired or added to. To date, she keeps two in her kitchen, another in their vacation home, and another in storage to be brought out when the demand for her baked goods exceeds the capacity of her two active La Germania ovens.

It has not been an easy life. But it is a rich, full one. “Sometimes, my husband and I like to think back on all we have gone through. Just talking about it, and being thankful, because even if we have had difficulties, we have always overcome them as a family. Looking at where we are now, we can truly say that we have made a home.”

ALL ABOUT THE HUSTLE: MEET YELLOW CAB’S SO WORTH IT SQUAD

MANILA, Philippines - Today’s generation of hustlers get a lot of flak by virtue of their age, but if Yellow Cab’s So Worth It Squad is anything to go by, it is that they embody the hunger, grit, and courage needed to make big things happen.

After securing indie folk-pop band Ben&Ben, Yellow Cab has welcomed eight more personalities to its list of brand ambassadors: filmmaker, columnist, musician, and production studio head Quark Henares; dynamic streetwear duo Emil and Vince Javier of Don’t Blame the Kids (DBTK); visual artist and muralist Anina Rubio; collegiate basketball stand-outs UP Fighting Maroons; writer, editor, and mental health advocate Pam Pastor; social entrepreneur Anya Lim; stand-up comic Red Ollero; and writer, performer, filmmaker, host, and dance teacher Mika Fabella.

From launching a local streetwear brand, championing Filipinos today through storytelling, growing one of the country’s first social and cultural enterprises, raising awareness of mental health, to exceeding expectations of collegiate basketball fans, the So Worth It Squad has taken the unconventional path, showing how important it is to have that ever-present fuel to be more, do more, and give more.

“The So Worth It Squad is comprised of individuals who we feel best represent the values that we also stand for as a brand—resilience, ingenuity, and grit,” said Charlene Sapina, Marketing Operations Head of Yellow Cab Pizza Co. “They are those who have never been shy about taking risks and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, leveraging on skills, love for their craft, and hunger for what they believe is so worth it.”

They may come from different backgrounds, but for Ben&Ben lead singer Miguel Guico, the So Worth It Squad have a great thing in common—a healthy appetite for possibilities. “For Ben&Ben, friendship, hunger, and love for music have driven us as a group,” said Guico. “We just had to pursue it, even when we were not earning as much or playing to small crowds, even if logic would tell us otherwise. We enjoyed the feeling of playing together and playing for our audience.”

Filmmaker Quark Henares shares that another trait that the So Worth It Squad share is a thirst for their craft. “Choosing the creative, unconventional path means that you never stop learning and growing. I think that’s the kind of hunger that we all share,” said Henares. “I’m proud to be part of a group that embodies a desire for learning and excelling.”

The So Worth It Squad is not just notable for being mavericks in their respective fields. Visual artist and muralist Anina Rubio shares that at the root of all their stories is a deeper hunger, one for meaningful work that will touch the lives of a lot of Filipinos. “My desire to break out from my previous career came from wanting work that brings me happiness and meaning,” shared Rubio.

“We all have this sense that the work we do has a higher purpose, whether it’s inspiring people to pursue a life in the arts, providing sustainable livelihood, or helping people improve their health. That’s the hunger that keeps us going and makes the hustle so worth it.”

As a brand, Yellow Cab understands what it means to be the challenger and the kind of hustle it takes to realize what Filipinos believe is so worth it. It hopes that in sharing their stories, the So Worth It Squad would inspire more Filipinos to stay hungry, to keep hustling, and to power through until they make it.

Galileo and Add-Venture Learning presents “Awesome Singapore Math Add-Ventures”

Why Is Math so important for kids and all to learn?

It is next to impossible to live an independent life without basic math skills. Children begin to learn about money in the early elementary grades. Math skills taught in early childhood education are designed to provide the foundation children need to succeed in elementary school and beyond.

We must encourage everyone, kids and all to excel in this area to increase functioning and opportunities in life and career as a result.

Why is Singapore Math popular among schools around the world?

The roots of this homegrown approach to Math started from a country with a population that struggled with Mathematics. Like most developing countries, they depended on textbooks and curriculum from foreign publishers. Recognizing the important role of Math education in shaping the citizens’ global proficiency, the Ministers of Education decided to take charge of the country's learning roadmap and developed an approach never before used in the world.

Enter Singapore Math, a teaching method that places emphasis on mathematical fluency through problem-solving without the need for rote learning and memorization. Fewer topics are introduced per level but discussed in greater detail, allowing deeper understanding and creating a strong foundation for higher math learning.

This change in direction proved effective as the country reaped its benefits. Since 1995, Singapore has consistently ranked first (or in the top three) in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The tables suddenly turned and Singapore Math became the resource and standard of effective approaches to learning Math. Now, over 25 countries including USA, Canada, France, Saudi Arabia, and Israel (including the Philippines) have incorporated Singapore Math into their textbooks

As one of the pioneers in advancement in learning, Galileo Enrichment Learning Program was the first to introduce Singapore Math as an after-school program and the first to hold Singapore Math Festivals in the Philippines. The Galileo Singapore Math Program aims to enhance the Math skills of students aged 6-12 through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach. This learning strategy allows the student to represent math concepts first through actual and concrete objects, then reinforced with a visual method called bar modeling, before finally progressing to mental solving techniques.

To strengthen its Singapore Math Program, Galileo has partnered with Add-Venture Learning, publishing and training company headquartered in Singapore. Add-Venture Learning specializes in making Singapore Math an enjoyable experience for students through their game packages, apps, magazines, and training. Behind their products are prominent figures in the world of Singapore Math and are recognized for their contribution in shaping and training Singapore teachers of the Ministry of Education.

The two educational think tanks have shared teaching and learning philosophies which complement their approach to making learning fun and meaningful through play. Both Galileo and Add-Venture believe that a child learns best by enjoying what is taught. Both companies employ game-play elements and a variety of activities to bring amusement, wonder, and knowledge in every engagement of any child.

To introduce the partnership, Galileo and Add-Venture Learning held a special event entitled “Awesome Singapore Math Add-Ventures.”

The event discussed the hows and whys of Singapore Math by demonstrating how to unlock sample Math problems. The discussion was handled by Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, one of the leading minds in Math and an advocate of Singapore Math. She was joined by Scott L. Chua, who shared his experiences of transitioning into a Singapore Math program and how it helped shape his Math skills.
